You can reduce the number and relevance of suspicious ads on TikTok by changing ad-topic preferences, limiting advertiser and off-TikTok data use, muting advertisers when that control is available, and sending feedback on individual ads. These settings do not remove every advertisement and are not a guarantee that scam ads will stop appearing.
Start with TikTok’s ad-topic control, then review personalization and data settings. Give changes time to take effect, and treat every ad as untrusted until you independently verify the business, offer, and payment destination.

What TikTok’s settings can—and cannot—do
TikTok separates advertising controls by the thing they change. Ad-topic preferences influence which subjects are used to shape your feed. Personalization and targeted-ad controls affect how TikTok uses information to select ads. Advertiser controls can reduce exposure to a particular advertiser or disconnect that advertiser where the option is offered. Off-TikTok activity controls address information shared by other apps and websites. An ad-feedback control lets you respond to a suspicious promotion.

1. Reduce unwanted subjects with Manage ad topics
The clearest documented route for changing ad subjects is in TikTok’s app. Labels can differ by language, country, account, or app version, so use the closest matching label if your screen is worded differently.
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Ads.
- Tap Manage ad topics.
- For a subject you would rather see less often, choose See less.
TikTok says an ad-topic change may take up to 48 hours to show on your account. During that period, you may continue to see ads related to the previous selection. The control changes topic relevance; it does not promise that every ad in that category will disappear, nor does it identify an advertiser as legitimate or fraudulent.
2. Review ad-personalization and targeted-ad controls
TikTok’s help center lists separate resources for ad personalization and targeted ads. Open the app’s Settings and privacy area, enter Ads, and review every personalization or targeted-ad switch that your account displays. Turn off a setting only after reading the label: a control may change whether ads are personalized, while leaving the normal advertising inventory in place.
Disabling personalization generally means TikTok has fewer of your on-platform signals to use for ad selection. It does not turn the ad space into an empty area. You can still receive ads, and an ad can still be deceptive even when it was selected with less personal data.
If a menu item is missing, update the app through your device’s normal app store, reopen TikTok, and check the Ads section again. Availability can vary by region, language, account, and app version; do not assume that a missing switch is hidden under an unrelated privacy menu.

3. Mute or disconnect advertisers when the option appears
TikTok provides advertiser-specific controls in its advertising resources. Depending on the account and region, you may be able to mute an advertiser or disconnect advertisers. These options are useful when the same promotion keeps returning or when you no longer want a particular company’s ads associated with your account.
Use the control from the ad itself or from the advertiser-management area shown in your current app. Read the confirmation carefully before saving it. Muting or disconnecting one advertiser is narrower than blocking a whole scam pattern: other accounts can promote the same false offer, and a new advertiser can use similar creative.
Because the exact labels and placement are not uniform across TikTok versions, do not rely on an old screenshot. If you cannot find an advertiser control, record the advertiser name and use the current ad-feedback or report entry on the ad instead.
4. Review and clear off-TikTok activity
TikTok also documents controls for off-TikTok activity—the information that participating apps and websites may share for advertising-related purposes. In the Ads or privacy area, look for the control that lets you review, disconnect, or clear that activity. The wording may vary by language and region.
Clearing this activity is not an instant erase from every system. TikTok says the clearing process may take up to 30 days. The company also notes that the control’s availability depends on regional and account settings. A completed request therefore should not be judged by whether the next ad immediately looks different.

After clearing, review the same page periodically. Disconnecting future sharing and clearing previously associated activity are separate ideas: if TikTok presents both choices, read each description and apply the one that matches your goal.

TikTok provides an About this ad entry for ads. Open it from the ad’s options menu when it is available and read the information TikTok presents. This can help you understand the context in which the promotion was delivered.
The existence of this screen does not establish that it displays every fact needed to authenticate a business. Its available information can vary, and the control should not be treated as a certification of the advertiser. Do not infer that an ad is safe merely because the screen opens or because the advertiser has a formal-looking profile.
6. Send feedback on a suspicious advertisement
TikTok’s English help-center index includes a resource called Share feedback on ads. Use the current feedback or report option shown on the suspicious advertisement and follow the instructions that TikTok displays at that moment.
The precise reporting sequence and the availability of a scam-specific reason can differ by region or app version. TikTok’s published resource does not establish that every account will see a category named “scam,” so do not wait for that exact word. If the available form offers a description field, state the concrete behavior that concerns you—for example, a request for payment outside a known checkout, a promise of guaranteed returns, or a link that impersonates another company.

Save the ad’s visible details before it disappears: advertiser name, account handle, landing-page address, offer wording, and the date and time you saw it. Do not click through again merely to collect evidence. If the app provides a confirmation or case reference, keep it with your notes.
7. A practical order for changing the settings
Working in a consistent order makes it easier to tell which change affected your feed and prevents you from overlooking a separate data control.
- Start with topics: set relevant subjects to See less under Manage ad topics.
- Review personalization: inspect ad-personalization and targeted-ad switches in Settings and privacy > Ads.
- Handle repeat advertisers: mute or disconnect a specific advertiser if TikTok offers that action.
- Check off-TikTok data: review sharing, disconnect future activity where available, and clear stored activity if that is your objective.
- Document and report: use About this ad for context, then submit feedback through the current ad-reporting interface.
- Wait before judging: allow up to 48 hours for topic changes and up to 30 days for off-TikTok activity clearing.

Why scam ads may still appear after you change settings
Topic controls are not advertiser verification
A scam can be packaged under an ordinary topic such as finance, shopping, employment, or software. Choosing See less changes topic weighting; it does not prove that every remaining advertiser in that topic is trustworthy.
Fraudsters can use different advertiser accounts
Muting one account cannot cover every account promoting a similar claim. If the creative, destination, or payment request changes, treat it as a new ad and report it separately.

Topic changes can take up to 48 hours, while off-TikTok activity clearing can take up to 30 days. Seeing a similar promotion during those windows is not evidence that the request failed.
Regional menus are not identical
TikTok’s help content and in-app labels can differ by language, country, account type, and app version. Follow the label currently shown on your device rather than a third-party screenshot.
How to evaluate an ad before interacting with it
- Check the destination without submitting data: look for a misspelled domain, unexpected redirect, or address unrelated to the claimed organization.
- Reject urgency: countdowns, threats of account closure, and “act now” payment demands are reasons to pause, not reasons to hurry.
- Verify independently: type the organization’s known web address yourself or use a trusted contact method; do not rely on the phone number, link, or QR code in the ad.
- Protect payment and identity details: never provide passwords, one-time codes, complete card details, or identity documents solely because an ad requests them.
- Be skeptical of guaranteed outcomes: guaranteed investment returns, instant loans, effortless jobs, and prizes that require an upfront fee are common warning signs.
- Keep evidence safely: capture the ad and landing page only if doing so does not require another click or a download.
What to do if you already clicked or paid
- Close the page and stop communicating with the advertiser. Do not install software or browser extensions it recommends.
- If you entered a password, change it from the genuine service’s official site and enable multi-factor authentication.
- Contact your bank or card issuer through the number on your card or statement, explain the suspected fraud, and ask what payment-dispute or card-replacement steps apply.
- If you downloaded a file, disconnect the device from sensitive accounts while you run its built-in security checks, then remove the file if it is confirmed unsafe.
- Use TikTok’s current ad-feedback/report option and include the advertiser, destination, and transaction details that can help reviewers.
Troubleshooting the settings
The Ads menu does not show Manage ad topics
Confirm that you are in Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Ads, update TikTok, and check the language and region associated with the account. The feature may not be offered to every account. Do not substitute an unrelated privacy switch and assume it controls ad topics.
The same ad appears after selecting See less
Allow the full 48-hour period TikTok describes. If the ad remains after that period, inspect whether it is from a different advertiser or uses a different topic, then use advertiser controls or ad feedback as appropriate.

Clearing off-TikTok activity seems ineffective
Clearing may take up to 30 days, and TikTok identifies regional and settings-based availability limits. Review whether you also need to disconnect future activity, and avoid judging success from one ad impression.
There is no scam category in the report form
Use the closest accurate reason and describe the specific deception in the available text field. Do not select an unrelated category merely to force a submission, and do not claim that TikTok has confirmed fraud unless it has provided that confirmation.
A maintenance checklist
- Review Manage ad topics when your interests or the type of ads you see changes.
- Recheck personalization and targeted-ad switches after a major app update.
- Mute or disconnect repeat advertisers instead of repeatedly opening their ads.
- Review off-TikTok activity controls and note the possible 30-day clearing period.
- Use About this ad for context, never as proof of legitimacy.
- Report suspicious promotions through the current in-app feedback path.
- Keep TikTok and your device’s operating system updated so current privacy labels and security fixes are available.
The limits of an ad-settings strategy
Ad settings address delivery and data signals, not the truthfulness of an offer. A reduced-personalization feed can still contain a malicious promotion, and a highly personalized feed can contain a legitimate one. The safest approach combines the controls above with independent verification and a refusal to share sensitive information under pressure.
If a setting is unavailable, use the controls that are present rather than installing an unverified “ad blocker” or giving a third-party service access to your TikTok account. TikTok’s own menus are the appropriate place to manage these account-level preferences.
