These controls change recommendation signals rather than create a guaranteed politics-free feed. Their labels and availability can differ by device, account state and YouTube interface version, so use the menu shown on your own screen.

What YouTube can—and cannot—do
YouTube’s official help pages describe recommendation feedback and history controls, not a broad “politics off” setting. You can tell YouTube that a particular recommendation is unwanted, reduce suggestions from a particular channel, and remove or pause activity that is influencing future suggestions. None of those actions is documented as a universal block for political topics across Home, Watch Next, search, subscriptions, notifications or every other YouTube surface.
The distinction matters. A recommendation control is a signal used by YouTube’s systems; it is not a topic-level content filter. A political clip may still appear because it comes from another channel, is found through search, is shared directly, appears in a subscription feed or is surfaced on a device where a different account is signed in.

YouTube says recommendations use several kinds of activity. Watch history is the primary signal for Home, while search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, feedback and satisfaction surveys can also affect what is suggested. Google Account activity may influence recommendations and related suggestions as well. YouTube explains these signals in How YouTube recommendations work.
Give feedback on unwanted videos
The fastest way to change a feed is to respond to the exact items you do not want. The official procedure applies to eligible recommendations on Home or Watch Next.
- Open YouTube while signed in to the account whose recommendations you want to change.
- Find the political video in Home or Watch Next.
- Open the video’s More menu (usually the three-dot menu beside the title).
- Select Not interested.
- If YouTube presents a reason or follow-up choice, select the explanation that best describes why the recommendation is unwanted.
YouTube says this feedback may be used to tune later recommendations. It does not promise that every video with political words, images or commentary will disappear, and it does not publish a guaranteed adjustment time. Continue using the control when new unwanted items appear instead of assuming one selection creates a permanent topic exclusion.

When to use “Not interested”
Choose Not interested when the problem is an individual video or a one-off recommendation. It is useful for clips from different channels that share a theme, because the signal is attached to the recommendation you rejected rather than only to one publisher. The option may not be shown for every item or surface.
When to use “Don’t recommend channel”
If the same channel repeatedly supplies political videos, open the recommendation’s More menu and choose Don’t recommend channel when that option is available. This is a channel-level recommendation signal. It is not a universal block: a video from that channel could still be encountered through search, a direct link, a subscription, a playlist or another YouTube surface.
Use the channel command selectively. If you watch nonpolitical material from the same channel, removing its recommendations may also reduce those videos. If that trade-off is acceptable, channel-level feedback is more efficient than marking each new upload separately.
Choose the control that matches the problem

The table separates three different decisions: reject a recommendation, reduce a source, or change the activity data that YouTube can use. Start with feedback if you want to preserve most personalization. Consider history changes only after understanding their effect on the rest of Home.
Review the watch history that is shaping Home
Political recommendations can be reinforced by earlier viewing, even when the videos were watched out of curiosity or because someone else used your account. YouTube’s help page says watch history is the primary Home recommendation signal. Removing relevant entries prevents those deleted items from being used as the basis for future video recommendations.

Remove specific videos
- Open YouTube’s history controls or Google My Activity for the signed-in account.
- Find political videos, related clips or accidental plays that you do not want influencing recommendations.
- Delete only the entries you are comfortable removing.
- Return to Home and use Not interested on any remaining unwanted recommendations.
Targeted deletion preserves more of your useful viewing history than clearing everything. It is the appropriate first step when a short burst of political viewing appears to have changed the feed.
Pause watch history
You can also turn watch history off. Before doing so, consider that future viewing will not be saved while the setting is paused, so recommendations lose that source of personalization. YouTube states: “If you don’t want video recommendations on Home, you can delete and turn off your watch history.” The wording refers specifically to Home recommendations; search and navigation remain available.
With watch history off and no significant prior watch history, YouTube says Home recommendations can disappear. That is a substantial side effect, not a hidden benefit: pausing history may reduce political suggestions, but it may also leave you with little or no personalized Home feed.

Do not overlook search history and account activity
Deleting watch history alone may not address a feed influenced by repeated searches. YouTube lists search history among the signals that can affect recommendations. Searches for election coverage, politicians, policy debates or commentary can therefore keep related suggestions prominent even if you remove some watched videos.
Review and delete searches that were accidental, temporary or made by another person using the account. You can manage this from YouTube’s history controls or Google My Activity. Deleting a search removes that recorded activity; it does not prevent you from searching again later.
YouTube’s recommendation explanation also notes that Google Account activity may influence recommendations and related suggestions. If several people share one Google account, or if the account is used across phones, televisions and browsers, activity from those contexts can be mixed. A separate signed-in profile for each regular viewer gives the recommendation system cleaner signals than repeatedly deleting other people’s activity.
Likes, dislikes, subscriptions and prior feedback are additional signals identified by YouTube. Unsubscribe from political channels only if you no longer want their uploads in your subscription feed; unsubscribing is not the same as blocking their videos everywhere. A dislike or recommendation feedback signal can express a preference without removing a subscription you still value.

How to decide between targeted and broad changes
Use the narrowest control that solves the problem. If one headline or clip is irrelevant, Not interested changes the recommendation signal with little disruption to the rest of your account. If one publisher repeatedly appears and you do not need its other programming, Don’t recommend channel saves you from rejecting each upload. If an accidental viewing session or shared-account activity is the source, deleting selected history addresses the cause rather than every symptom.
Broadly clearing history is a different choice. It removes the viewing record YouTube can use as the basis for future recommendations, and pausing history prevents new viewing from being saved. That can reduce personalization for sports, music, news, hobbies and other subjects you do want. If Home becomes sparse or empty afterward, that is consistent with YouTube’s documented behavior when there is no significant prior watch history; it is not evidence that the account is broken.
Feedback is also more reversible than deletion. YouTube provides ways to manage or clear recommendation feedback where available, while deleted watch history is not restored simply by turning history back on. Make a note of what you change if you are troubleshooting a shared account, so you can reverse a channel-level choice or resume history deliberately.
Device and account differences
YouTube documents different interactions for computers, mobile devices, televisions, streaming devices and consoles. A menu may be beside the title on one screen and behind a remote-control options button on another. Some controls are available only when you are signed in.
- Computer: On Home or Watch Next, use the More menu beside the recommendation and select the available feedback option.
- Phone or tablet: Open the recommendation’s overflow menu and look for Not interested or Don’t recommend channel. The menu may require scrolling.
- Smart TV or streaming device: Highlight the recommendation, open the device’s options or three-dot menu, and choose the feedback item that appears. Remote-control labels can differ from the web wording.
- Game console: Use the options menu attached to the recommendation. If a command is missing, manage feedback and history from the same account on a computer or mobile device.
Do not assume that changing one account changes another account on the same television. Check the profile avatar before editing history, and verify that the device is signed in to the account whose Home feed you are trying to improve.
A practical reset plan
Use this sequence when political recommendations have become a recurring annoyance:
- Confirm the account. Check the profile currently active on each device where the problem occurs.
- Mark current examples. On Home and Watch Next, apply Not interested to each unwanted recommendation you encounter.
- Remove persistent sources. Apply Don’t recommend channel to channels that repeatedly appear and are not worth keeping in your recommendation mix.
- Inspect recent watch history. Delete political videos, autoplayed clips or viewing made by another person when those entries are not useful to your future recommendations.
- Inspect search history. Remove temporary political searches that no longer represent what you want suggested.
- Check subscriptions and likes. Keep them when they reflect an ongoing interest; change them only when your current preferences have changed.
- Decide whether to pause history. Use this only when you accept less personalization and the possibility that Home recommendations may disappear if little prior history remains.
- Repeat feedback as needed. Treat new recommendations as additional signals to correct, not as proof that the controls failed.
This sequence starts with the least disruptive action and reserves broad history changes for cases where the viewing record itself is the main cause.
If political videos continue to appear
The videos come from many different channels
Mark each unwanted item as Not interested. A channel-level command cannot cover unrelated publishers, while individual feedback can tell YouTube that the pattern—not just one source—is unwanted.

The same channel returns after you marked it
Check whether the video is being found through search, a subscription, a shared link, a playlist or another surface rather than a Home recommendation. Don’t recommend channel addresses recommendations; it is not documented as a site-wide block.
The feed changed after one political viewing session
Inspect watch and search history for that session. Delete entries that should not influence future recommendations, then use feedback on the resulting Home items. If another household member used the account, create or use the correct profile before making more changes.
Home becomes empty after history changes
This is an expected consequence when watch history is off and there is no significant prior history. Search and navigation still work. Turn watch history back on if you want new viewing to supply personalization again, understanding that future activity can influence recommendations.

Availability varies by surface, device and sign-in state. Confirm that you are looking at a recommendation on Home or Watch Next, open the item’s complete options menu and verify the active account. If the control still is not offered, manage history or recommendation feedback from another signed-in device rather than assuming the account has a universal block setting.

- Assuming one click is permanent: A single rejection is feedback on a recommendation, not a promise that every related topic will be excluded.
- Deleting everything first: A full history deletion can remove the information used to personalize all of Home, not just political suggestions.
- Confusing recommendations with subscriptions: A channel recommendation control does not erase a subscription or prevent a video you intentionally open from playing.
- Editing the wrong profile: A television may have several signed-in accounts. Check the avatar before changing history.
- Expecting a published deadline: YouTube does not state that a feed will change within a particular number of hours or days.
What results you should expect
YouTube’s official guidance does not promise a specific number of hours or days for a feed to adapt. It also does not promise complete removal of political content. A reduction in recommendations is a reasonable goal; a guarantee that no political video will ever appear is not supported by the documented controls.
Keep the distinction between recommendations and access in mind. These settings affect what YouTube suggests, not what exists on the service or what can be reached intentionally. Someone can still search for political material, open a shared URL, watch a subscribed channel or encounter a result outside Home and Watch Next.
