Facebook’s setting is called Political Content and sits in Content Preferences. Instagram’s equivalent is designed mainly to reduce political recommendations in places such as Explore, Reels and in-feed suggestions. Posts from accounts you follow, groups, pages and other surfaces can still appear.

What the controls actually change
These settings adjust ranking and recommendations. They do not delete political posts, unfollow accounts, leave groups or block political advertising. A post can remain permitted on the service while being excluded from recommendations, so reducing recommendations is different from making content impossible to encounter.
The two platforms also describe different scopes:
| Platform | Where the control is found | Primary effect described by Meta | What may still appear | Freshness of documented route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Settings & privacy → Settings → Content Preferences → Political Content | Turning off the default option lets you see less political content. | Political posts from followed accounts, pages, groups and other surfaces may still be shown; Meta says changing the default can affect followed-account content as well as recommendations. | Location and effect confirmed in Meta’s May 28, 2025 update. | |
| Settings and privacy → Content preferences → Political content (labels can vary) | Reduces political recommendations, including Explore, Reels, in-feed recommendations and suggested users. | Posts from accounts you chose to follow are not covered in the same way; followed political accounts can continue appearing. | Recommendation scope comes from Meta’s February 9, 2024 announcement; a practical menu route was documented by the Associated Press on March 23, 2024 and should be checked against your current app. |
Meta changed its overall policy direction in January 2025. It said civic content—posts about elections, politics or social issues—would be brought back more broadly through a personalized approach, alongside expanded controls. Consequently, instructions written before 2025 may describe a stricter or different default than the one currently displayed.

How to see fewer political posts on Facebook
Use the Political Content preference
- Open Facebook.
- Open the main menu and select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Open Content Preferences.
- Choose Political Content.
- Turn off the default option that allows more political content, or select the available choice to see less political content.
Meta’s May 28, 2025 update says this preference can be changed at any time. The exact wording of the switch may vary by app version, language, account and region. If you do not see it, use Facebook’s settings search for Political Content and install any pending app update before concluding that your account lacks the feature.
What happens after you change it
Facebook describes the result as seeing less political content, not seeing none. The company specifically warns that moving away from the default may change political content shown by accounts you follow as well as recommendations from accounts you do not follow. That makes Facebook’s documented scope broader than Instagram’s 2024 description.
The setting does not automatically unfollow a candidate, commentator, news page or activist account. It also does not remove political discussions from a group you joined or from a page you deliberately visit. Those are separate relationship or membership decisions.

First check whether the item came from a followed account, group or page rather than a recommendation. Then open the post’s available feedback menu and choose the option that indicates you are not interested or want less of this type of content, when offered. Ranking systems learn from repeated feedback rather than from one guaranteed block, so apply the control consistently to recommendations that are clearly unwanted.
For a particular account, unfollowing, snoozing or blocking is a separate action with a stronger effect on that account’s posts. Do not use those actions if you only want to reduce recommendations while continuing to follow the account.
How to limit political recommendations on Instagram
Find the current setting
Instagram’s interface has changed since the original announcement, and Meta’s 2024 post did not provide a permanent, current menu path. In the present app, start here:
- Open your Instagram profile.
- Open the profile menu.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Open Content preferences.
- Look for Political content and choose the option that limits or reduces political recommendations.
Some accounts may see slightly different capitalization or wording. If Political content is not visible, use the settings search for that phrase, update Instagram, and check again later. Meta has not established in the cited material that every account, language or region receives the control simultaneously.
The older route documented by the Associated Press
For reference, the Associated Press walkthrough published March 23, 2024 described this sequence: profile menu → Settings and privacy → Content preferences → Political content → choose the option not to limit. Treat those labels as dated guidance rather than a guarantee that every current build uses the same wording. The important destination is the political-content control inside Content preferences.

Which Instagram surfaces are affected
Meta’s February 9, 2024 announcement said the control applies to recommendation surfaces such as:
- Explore
- Reels recommendations
- In-feed recommendations
- Suggested users and similar account suggestions
That announcement also said the change would not alter how posts from accounts a person chose to follow are shown. In practical terms, the control is intended to stop Instagram from introducing as many political accounts or posts you did not request; it is not an instruction to hide every political post published by someone already in your following list.
Why Instagram and Facebook do not behave identically
It is tempting to expect one Meta toggle to have the same result everywhere, but the documented effects differ. Instagram’s description separates followed-account posts from recommendation surfaces. Facebook’s May 2025 update says changing its default can affect both recommendations and political content from followed accounts.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The difference reflects each service’s feed architecture and the way Meta defines recommendations. Instagram may insert unfamiliar accounts into Explore, Reels and the home feed, while Facebook mixes followed accounts, pages, groups and suggested material in a broader feed. A control named similarly on both services therefore does not imply identical coverage.
What “less political content” does not promise
It is not a complete removal switch
Neither platform promises a feed with zero political material. A post can be allowed on the service but ineligible for recommendation. Meta’s Recommendation Guidelines explain this distinction: recommendation eligibility is a separate layer from whether content may remain available to people who follow, search for or otherwise access it.
It does not erase followed accounts
On Instagram, Meta explicitly said people who follow political accounts would still receive those accounts’ posts. On Facebook, Meta says the preference may alter followed-account content, but it does not say that every political post from those accounts disappears. If you need a stronger result for one account, use the account-level options rather than relying only on the political-content preference.
It does not cover every political discussion
Politics can be embedded in a post that is not labeled or classified as political, such as a local policy debate, a discussion of public services or a news video. Classification and ranking are imperfect, so some material may not be recognized as political by the control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is separate from political-ad controls
Organic posts, recommendation ranking and paid ads are different systems. Historical Facebook guidance mentioned a separate political-ads control alongside tools such as Favorites and Snooze. That older material, originally published in February 2021 and updated through April 2023, should not be treated as proof of today’s menu path. If your concern is advertising, look for the ad’s own controls and advertising preferences; changing the political-content recommendation setting is not a guarantee that political ads will vanish.

How to reduce unwanted items after changing the setting
Identify the source of the post
- Recommended post: It usually says that it is suggested or recommended and comes from an account you do not follow. Use the post-level feedback option to request less of this material.
- Followed account: The account appears in your following or friends relationship. Unfollow, mute or block only if you want to change that relationship.
- Group or page: Membership or page-following can continue to produce political discussions even when recommendations are limited. Adjust membership or notification settings separately.
- Advertisement: Use the ad’s controls and advertising-preference tools; the political-content setting is not an ad-removal promise.
Give consistent feedback
Use the available “not interested,” “show less” or comparable feedback choice on recommendation items that are clearly unwanted. The exact label can differ by surface and app version. Feedback is most useful when it is applied to the actual recommendation rather than to an unrelated followed-account post.
Review your following list
Recommendation controls cannot substitute for an intentional following audit. If a particular political account is the main source of unwanted posts, decide whether to unfollow, mute or block it. Those actions are more targeted than changing a global preference and can be reversed later, depending on the option used.
Use a simple decision process
When a political item appears, identify its source before changing more settings. A recommendation from an unfamiliar account is the case these controls address most directly. A post from an account you intentionally follow calls for an account-level decision, such as unfollowing or muting. A group thread requires a membership or notification change, while a sponsored item requires the ad’s own feedback and advertising controls. Treating every item as a recommendation can lead you to change a global preference without addressing the real source.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make one change at a time and then check several feed surfaces. Instagram’s control is specifically described for Explore, Reels, in-feed recommendations and suggested users, so a result in Explore should not be used to promise the same result in direct visits to a followed profile. Facebook’s broader feed can combine recommendations with followed accounts, pages and groups, so inspect the label or relationship attached to a post before judging the setting.
What the January 2025 policy change means for users
Meta’s January 7, 2025 announcement did not say that every user would see the same volume of civic content. It described a more personalized approach based on individual signals and said user controls would be expanded. “Civic content” in that announcement includes posts about elections, politics and social issues. This is why an older article that promises a permanent platform-wide reduction may no longer match the product.
The practical implication is to date any advice you share. Facebook’s setting location and “see less” effect were confirmed in Meta’s May 28, 2025 update, while Instagram’s detailed recommendation description comes from February 2024. Instagram users should therefore verify the live menu, and everyone should expect labels or defaults to change as Meta adjusts the product.
Troubleshooting when you cannot find the option
The menu name is different
Look under Content preferences, not only under notification settings or privacy. Search the settings screen for Political or Content. Meta has changed labels over time, and translations may use different wording.
The feature is missing
Update the app, close and reopen it, and check the settings search again. Feature availability can depend on account, region, language and rollout status. The cited Meta announcements do not establish that every user receives the same control at the same time.
The setting changed but the feed did not
Ranking changes are not necessarily immediate or absolute. Confirm that the item is a recommendation rather than a post from a followed account, group or page. Continue using item-level feedback on recommendations and allow time for the feed to adjust. Do not interpret one remaining political post as proof that the setting is inactive.

You are following political accounts
Instagram’s documented behavior makes this the clearest explanation: followed-account posts are outside the main recommendation reduction described by Meta. On Facebook, the preference may affect followed-account content, but Meta still does not promise complete removal. Use account-level controls if one source is the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing the right action for your goal
| Your goal | Best first action | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| See fewer unfamiliar political accounts in Instagram Explore or Reels | Enable the political-content limit under Instagram’s Content preferences. | Followed accounts can still appear. |
| Reduce political recommendations throughout Facebook | Turn off the default Political Content option in Facebook Content Preferences. | Meta says the change may also affect followed-account content, but it does not guarantee zero political posts. |
| Stop seeing one commentator’s posts | Unfollow, mute or block that account. | This changes your relationship with the account, not only recommendations. |

| Reduce political advertising | Use the advertisement’s feedback and advertising-preference controls. | Ad controls are separate from organic-content recommendations. |
Policy changes that make older instructions unreliable
On January 7, 2025, Meta announced a more personalized approach to political content and said it would recommend more political content based on personalized signals while expanding user controls. Its statement included: “We are also going to recommend more political content based on these personalized signals and are expanding the options people have to control how much of this content they see.”
Recommended Free Tools
This policy shift matters when evaluating older tutorials. A guide that says Meta permanently suppresses political recommendations, or that a single switch removes posts from followed accounts, may describe an earlier policy or a different surface. Check the current in-app setting and distinguish recommendations from content you deliberately follow.
Cost, privacy and reversibility
There is no device, subscription, paid service or accessory required. These are built-in account preferences. Meta says the Facebook preference can be changed at any time, and Instagram’s control is likewise an in-app recommendation choice rather than a permanent account change. Turning a preference off does not erase your following list or remove your account from the platform.
Because the controls change ranking, not access rights, they should not be treated as a privacy barrier or parental filter. Someone who searches for a political account, opens a shared link or visits a group can still encounter political material that remains available. For stronger separation from a specific source, use unfollow, mute, block or group controls deliberately.
Bottom line for each platform
On Facebook: open Settings & privacy → Settings → Content Preferences → Political Content and turn off the default option to see less. Expect a reduction, not an empty political-content feed; Meta says the change can affect followed accounts as well as recommendations.
On Instagram: open your profile menu and look under Settings and privacy → Content preferences → Political content. The control is aimed at recommendations in Explore, Reels, in-feed suggestions and suggested users. Posts from political accounts you already follow can continue to appear.
In both apps, use post-level feedback and account-level controls for anything that remains unwanted. Recheck the setting after major app updates because Meta’s labels, defaults and policy can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I limit political content on Instagram?
Open your profile menu, choose Settings and privacy, then Content preferences and Political content. Select the option that limits political recommendations. Menu labels can vary, so search settings for Political content if necessary.
How do I see fewer political posts on Facebook?
Go to Settings & privacy, Settings, Content Preferences and Political Content. Turn off the default option to see less political content. Meta says the preference can affect recommendations and some content from followed accounts, but it does not guarantee a politics-free feed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Instagram’s setting hide posts from people I follow?
Not in the same way as recommendations. Meta’s Instagram description says the control covers Explore, Reels, in-feed recommendations and suggested users, while posts from accounts you chose to follow can continue appearing.
Why am I still seeing political posts after changing the setting?
The item may come from a followed account, page, group or a surface outside the recommendation control. Political topics may also be classified imperfectly. Use the item’s not-interested or show-less feedback and apply account, page or group controls when appropriate.
Is limiting political content the same as blocking political ads?
No. Organic posts, recommendations and paid advertising use separate controls. Use the advertisement’s own feedback and advertising-preference tools if ads are the concern.
Why can’t I find Political Content in settings?
Search the settings screen for Political or Content, update the app and reopen it. Availability and labels can vary by app version, language, account and region, and Meta has not established simultaneous availability for every user.
Can I undo the setting later?
Yes. Facebook says its preference can be adjusted at any time. Instagram’s control is also an account preference, so you can revisit Content preferences and change the available choice.
Will these controls remove political content from groups?
No guaranteed removal is described. Group membership and group notifications are separate from recommendation preferences, so adjust those settings or leave the group if that is the source of the unwanted discussions.
The Bottom Line
Use Facebook’s Content Preferences → Political Content setting to see less, and Instagram’s Content preferences → Political content control to reduce recommendations. Neither removes every political post. Identify whether an item is recommended, followed, group-based or paid, then use the matching feedback or account control.
