Google does not currently offer a general “health” or “medicine” switch in My Ad Center. You can limit the sensitive topics Google lists—Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy and parenting, and Weight loss—or turn personalized ads off more broadly. Neither setting guarantees that every advertisement related to a condition, treatment, pharmacy or medicine will disappear.
To change the available controls, sign in to the Google Account whose ads you want to manage, open My Ad Center, choose Customize Ads, and select Sensitive. Turn on a limit for any listed topic; Google says the preference saves automatically. For the broadest reduction in ad personalization, use the My Ad Center control for personalized ads and switch it off.

What Google’s controls can—and cannot—do
My Ad Center separates two different choices: limiting selected sensitive topics and turning personalized advertising off. They have different scope and should not be treated as ad blockers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Control | Where to find it | What it changes | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensitive-topic limit | My Ad Center → Customize Ads → Sensitive | Reduces personalization for the sensitive topics that Google lists and that you choose to limit. | It does not cover a general health or medicine category, and it does not block every related advertisement. |
| Personalized ads off | My Ad Center’s personalized-ads control | Stops Google from using personalization for ads in the broader way described by its settings. | Ads can still be selected from the page, app, location, language, search, or other contextual information. It is not a universal ad blocker. |
As of Google’s documentation checked on October 13, 2026, the Sensitive list contains five topics: Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy and parenting, and Weight loss. There is no separate switch labelled Health, Medical, Medicines, Conditions or Treatments. That absence is important: selecting a listed topic cannot be used as a substitute for a general health-ad control.

Limit the sensitive topics Google actually lists
This is the narrower option. Use it when one of the listed topics is the concern and you want to reduce related personalization without changing every personalized-ad setting.
- Sign in to the correct Google Account. The setting belongs to the account you are using. If a browser, phone or shared computer has multiple accounts open, check the profile before changing anything.
- Open My Ad Center. You can reach it from Google services where ads appear, including Search, YouTube and Maps.
- Choose Customize Ads. This is the area for adjusting the subjects and types of ads Google uses for personalization.
- Select the Sensitive tab. Review the topics shown there rather than assuming that health or medicines are included.
- Turn on the limit for each listed topic you want to restrict. For example, you can limit Pregnancy and parenting or Weight loss if those subjects are the source of unwanted personalization.
- Leave the page after checking the saved state. Google says the preference saves automatically; there is no separate save button to press.
The sensitive-topic controls are documented as affecting ads on Google Search, YouTube and Discover while you are signed in. Google’s broader My Ad Center availability also includes services such as Maps, but the sensitive-topic documentation specifically names Search, YouTube and Discover. Do not assume that every Google surface has identical controls or identical ad selection.
Why this is not a health-ad switch
A health condition, a prescription, an over-the-counter medicine and a treatment service can be discussed in ads without matching any one of the five listed sensitive topics. A weight-loss advertisement, for instance, may fall under the listed Weight loss topic, while an advertisement for a condition unrelated to that topic may not. Google does not publish a user-facing health-and-medicine category in this control.
Turn personalized ads off for broader control
If your aim is to reduce personalization about health, medicines and other subjects at the same time, the broader setting is the more relevant choice. In My Ad Center, locate the control for personalized ads and switch it off. Read the confirmation or explanatory text shown in your account before leaving the page.

This choice is broader than limiting one sensitive topic because it changes the general personalization setting rather than only a selected entry in the Sensitive list. It still does not prevent advertisements from appearing. Google can show ads based on the content of the page or video, your approximate location, language, device context and other non-personalized signals. Turning personalization off therefore changes how ads are selected; it does not remove the advertising space itself.
Google’s Ads Settings help also describes opting out of personalized ads across the Google Display Network. If you use Google services in more than one account, repeat the change for each account that matters. The setting applies while you are signed in, so a signed-out session, a different account or another person’s profile will not inherit your preference.
Why health or medicine ads can continue to appear
Seeing a related advertisement after changing a setting does not necessarily mean that the setting failed. Google identifies several reasons an ad can still be shown.
Context from the page, video or search
Some ads are contextual. The system can use what a page, video or search is about without treating the subject as a personal interest category. If you search for a symptom, a drug name or a treatment, ads related to that subject may appear because the current query provides context.

Google states: “Your ads are affected by your search activity, even if you’ve chosen to limit ads about a sensitive topic.” This explains why a sensitive-topic limit is not a guarantee that a search for a medical subject will be followed by unrelated advertising.
The topic is not on the Sensitive list
Only the topics displayed under Sensitive can be limited there. Because Google does not list a general health or medicine category, a medical advertisement may not be covered by any sensitive-topic toggle. Turning on a limit for Pregnancy and parenting or Weight loss should not be described as blocking all medical advertising.
The advertisement is about something else
Google explains that a limited topic can still appear in an advertisement about another subject. An ad may mention a health-related feature, ingredient or service while its main classification is different. The topic limit is not a keyword blacklist and does not inspect every phrase in every creative.

Topic preferences are not the same as sensitive-topic limits
My Ad Center also lets you ask to see fewer ads about ordinary topics or brands. That preference changes ad selection but does not block the topic or brand. A later search or browsing activity can still affect the ads you see and the way those preferences are interpreted.
This distinction matters when trying to reduce medicine-related advertising. Asking for fewer ads about a regular topic is not a medical privacy filter, and it is not equivalent to turning personalized ads off. Use the Sensitive tab for one of Google’s five listed sensitive subjects; use the broader personalized-ads control when you want to reduce personalization across subjects.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right setting
Choose a sensitive-topic limit when:
- Your concern matches one of the five displayed topics.
- You want to keep other personalized-ad features enabled.
- You understand that the limit affects personalization rather than every ad containing related words.
Choose personalized ads off when:
- You want the broadest account-level reduction in personalization.
- Your concern is a health or medicine subject that is not represented in the Sensitive list.
- You are willing to accept less relevant ads across many categories, not just medical subjects.
Use both when:
- You want the broad personalized-ads setting changed and also want the listed sensitive-topic preferences recorded in the account.
- You manage several accounts and need to verify the same choices in each one.
Neither path should be presented as a guaranteed way to stop all health, medicine or treatment advertising. The practical difference is breadth: a sensitive-topic limit is selective, while personalized ads off is the wider personalization choice.

Use this checklist after changing the setting or when an ad still appears:
Best Value
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Reopen My Ad Center and verify the toggle’s current position.
- Check Customize Ads → Sensitive to see which of the five topics are limited.
- Determine whether the ad appeared on Search, YouTube, Discover, Maps or another site in the Display Network.
- Ask whether the current page, video or search query explains the ad contextually.
- Check whether the advertisement is actually about a different product or service that merely mentions a health subject.
- If you changed the setting on one account, repeat the check for any other account currently active on the device.
These checks separate an account-setting issue from normal contextual advertising. They also prevent a common mistake: expecting a topic preference to behave like a blocking rule.
What Google’s advertiser policy means for health data
Google treats personal physical or mental health conditions, including chronic conditions, and products or services used to treat or manage chronic conditions as sensitive-interest categories in its advertiser policy. That policy restricts advertisers in those categories from using advertiser-curated audiences such as Customer Match and their own data segments. Google still permits specified predefined Google audiences under the policy.
Those are advertiser-side targeting rules, not an additional end-user switch. They limit certain ways advertisers can build or use audiences; they do not add a Health button to My Ad Center and do not guarantee that a person will never see an ad about a medical subject.

The immediate result should be a changed preference in your signed-in account, not an empty ad space. With a sensitive-topic limit, Google should use that preference when selecting personalized ads for the affected listed topic. With personalized ads off, the account should receive less ad personalization overall, while contextual and other non-personalized selection can continue.
Google does not publish a quantified percentage reduction for either control in the cited help documentation. Treat claims that a setting will reduce medical ads by a specific percentage as unsupported unless Google provides a measurement for your particular account and context.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for a missing Health category. The current Sensitive list does not include one.
- Assuming “limit” means “block.” Google explicitly cautions that limited topics can still appear in some circumstances.
- Testing only with a medical search. Search activity itself can produce contextual ads related to the query.
- Changing a preference while signed out. The documented controls apply while signed in.
- Confusing advertiser policy with account controls. Restrictions on Customer Match or data segments do not create a personal ad-blocking switch.
- Expecting identical behavior everywhere. The sensitive-topic documentation names Search, YouTube and Discover, while My Ad Center is available on additional Google services such as Maps.
Privacy expectations and the realistic outcome
If you want to reduce the chance that Google’s ad personalization connects your account with sensitive subjects, start with personalized ads off. If you only need to reduce one of Google’s listed topics, use its Sensitive-tab limit. In both cases, keep the expectation precise: these settings influence personalized ad selection while you are signed in; they do not erase medical terms from pages, stop contextual advertising, or guarantee that no health-related creative will be shown.
The most reliable way to interpret a continued ad is to identify its selection context—your account setting, the current search or content, the service where it appeared and the ad’s actual subject—rather than treating one impression as proof that the preference was ignored.
