How to Limit Personalized Ads on YouTube

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

To make YouTube ads less personalized, open My Ad Center, switch Personalized ads off, and confirm. For a signed-in Google account, this setting applies to Google services, including YouTube, on devices where that account is signed in. It reduces the use of saved account activity and other signals for ad personalization, but it does not remove ads.

If you watch while signed out, use YouTube’s ad settings for the current browser or device. On an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, Apple’s Ask App Not to Track choice is an additional, narrower control over linking YouTube activity with non-Google apps and websites; it does not replace the Google account setting.

What turning off personalized ads changes

Personalized ads are selected using information associated with your activity and settings. Turning the account-level option off tells Google not to use saved account information and activity to personalize ads shown on Google services, including YouTube. The setting follows your signed-in account across devices where you use that account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You will still see advertising. YouTube and Google can show non-personalized ads using contextual signals such as the topic of the video, the time of day, or your location. Turning personalization off therefore changes how ads are selected, not whether ad slots exist. YouTube lists paid memberships as an option for viewers seeking an ad-free experience; that is a separate service choice rather than a privacy setting. See YouTube’s explanation of ads.

Turn off personalized ads for a signed-in account

This is the broadest Google control and the one to use if you are signed in to YouTube.

  1. Open My Ad Center from Google’s ad settings.
  2. Find Personalized ads.
  3. Switch the control off.
  4. Read the confirmation message and confirm your choice.

The setting covers Google services, including YouTube, when you are signed in with the account whose setting you changed. If several people use the same device, check the account avatar before changing anything; a different signed-in account has its own ad choice.

Reduce the data used for ad personalization without changing everything

You can leave the main setting available while removing particular activity categories from ad personalization. In My Ad Center, open Manage Privacy. The controls described by Google include YouTube History and Activity on sites and apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop YouTube History from informing ads

  1. Open My Ad Center and choose Manage Privacy.
  2. Locate the YouTube History setting under activity used to personalize ads.
  3. Turn off the option that allows YouTube History to inform ads, then confirm if prompted.

This is an advertising-use control, not necessarily a history-deletion control. Google says turning it off does not necessarily stop YouTube History from being saved to your Google Account, and it may still be used for recommendations. If your goal is to remove saved viewing records, use YouTube or Google Account history controls separately; do not assume the ad setting erases them. Details are in Google’s guide to data used for ads.

Stop activity on sites and apps from informing ads

  1. In My Ad Center, open Manage Privacy.
  2. Find Activity on sites and apps.
  3. Turn off its use for ads and confirm.

This narrows the activity Google may use for ad personalization. It is separate from the YouTube History control, so decide whether you want to change one category or both.

Limit ads while signed out

When you are not signed in, the choice is stored for the browser or device being used. It is not an account-wide preference and does not automatically transfer to a phone, tablet, computer, or another browser.

  1. Open Google’s ad settings while signed out.
  2. Select the YouTube option for personalized ads.
  3. Switch personalized ads off and confirm.

If you clear browser data, use a different browser profile, or move to another device, check the setting again. A signed-out choice also does not control advertising delivered by non-Google platforms.

Use the YouTube app on Android

The Android app provides a signed-out route. If you are signed in, YouTube directs you to the account-level My Ad Center controls instead.

When you are signed out

  1. Open the YouTube app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or the app’s settings entry.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Choose History & Privacy.
  5. Switch off Allow personalized ads.

This affects personalization for the Android device and app session while signed out. It does not change the Google account preference used when you later sign in.

When you are signed in

Use My Ad Center’s Personalized ads switch. The Android help instructions describe the signed-in and signed-out choices as different controls; changing one does not silently change the other. The platform-specific explanation is available at Google’s Android ad-settings help.

Use Apple’s tracking choice on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

The YouTube app may ask for Apple’s permission to track activity across apps and websites. Choosing Ask App Not to Track prevents YouTube app activity from being linked with activity from non-Google apps and websites for personalized ads and measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. When the Apple prompt appears, choose Ask App Not to Track.
  2. To review or change it later, open the Apple device’s privacy settings.
  3. Find the YouTube app in the tracking controls and change its permission.

This is narrower than Google’s account-level choice. It concerns cross-app linking with non-Google apps and websites on that Apple device. It does not decide whether your Google account has personalized ads enabled, and it does not control activity collected by other Google apps and websites. For the app-specific behavior, see YouTube’s Apple-device ad-settings help and Google’s iOS explanation of personalized ads.

Adjust topics and brands instead of switching personalization off

My Ad Center lets you influence the kinds of ads you see by adjusting topics and brands. This can be useful when you want fewer ads related to a sensitive interest but do not want to disable all personalization.

  1. Open My Ad Center.
  2. Browse the topic or brand controls.
  3. Choose the topics or brands you want to see less or more often.
  4. Save or confirm the changes shown by the interface.

These controls change the mix, not the volume. Asking for fewer ads about a topic does not block every ad about it, and it does not reduce the overall number of ads. You may still encounter an ad related to a limited topic, especially after searching for that subject. The ad menu may also offer controls to block or report an individual ad when that option is available. Google documents these limits in My Ad Center’s overview.

Decide which combination fits your goal

There is no need to change every control if one setting addresses your concern. Use the broad account switch when you want the simplest account-wide change. Use the activity controls when you want to keep some personalization but exclude viewing history or activity on sites and apps. Use the signed-out control when you deliberately avoid signing in. On Apple devices, add the tracking choice when your concern is cross-app linking with non-Google services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These choices can be combined. For example, a signed-in viewer can turn off Personalized ads, turn off YouTube History and Activity on sites and apps under Manage Privacy, and choose Ask App Not to Track on an iPhone. Each action addresses a different data path. Conversely, changing only the topic list does not stop account activity from being used, and changing only Apple’s permission does not change Google’s account setting.

Why ads can remain after you switch personalization off

Contextual selection

Non-personalized ads can be selected from the context of the current viewing session, including the video’s subject, the time of day, and location. Seeing an ad that relates to the video you are watching is therefore not proof that account activity is still being used for personalization.

Different scopes

A signed-out browser setting, a signed-in Google account setting, an Apple tracking permission, and an individual topic preference operate at different scopes. If you changed only one, another scope may still have its own setting. For example, turning off Apple tracking does not turn off personalized ads for your Google account, while turning off account personalization does not change advertising choices made by another platform.

Recommendations are not the same as ad personalization

Turning off YouTube History for ads does not necessarily stop YouTube from saving history or using it for recommendations. Ad controls and recommendation controls should be treated as separate decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the setting after changing it

Start by checking the account avatar in YouTube and in My Ad Center. If you use multiple Google accounts, repeat the review for each account whose ads you want to change. Then check every device where you watch: a signed-in phone and a signed-in television app should use the account-level choice, while a signed-out browser or app has its own local choice.

On a shared computer, browser profiles can make the result look inconsistent. One profile may be signed in and another may be signed out. Private browsing, cleared cookies, or deleted app data can also remove a signed-out preference, so revisit the ad setting if the browser or app has been reset. These checks do not make ads disappear; they simply confirm that you changed the intended scope.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting an ad blocker: Personalized ads off changes selection, not the existence of ad placements.
  • Confusing history with deletion: The YouTube History ad control does not necessarily erase saved viewing history or stop recommendations.
  • Assuming one device covers all devices: Signed-out preferences are local to a browser or device.
  • Treating Apple’s prompt as a Google switch: Apple’s tracking choice covers cross-app linking with non-Google apps and websites, not the Google account’s ad setting.
  • Expecting topic controls to block subjects: “See less” changes frequency and mix; it is not a complete block.
  • Changing the wrong account: A shared device may have several signed-in Google accounts, each with separate settings.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Signed in on most devices: Turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center.
  • Want a narrower change: In Manage Privacy, turn off YouTube History for ads and, if appropriate, Activity on sites and apps.
  • Usually signed out: Change the YouTube ad setting separately in each browser or device you use.
  • Using Apple devices: Choose Ask App Not to Track if you do not want YouTube app activity linked with non-Google apps and websites.
  • Want different ad subjects: Adjust topics and brands, understanding that this does not block topics or reduce total ads.
  • Want no YouTube ads: Consider YouTube’s paid-membership options rather than expecting a personalization switch to remove advertising.

Check that the change matches your goal

If you still see ads that seem relevant

Relevant-looking ads can be contextual. Check that you changed the control for the correct signed-in account, then distinguish the account-level setting from a signed-out browser choice and Apple’s tracking permission. None of these controls promises an ad-free YouTube session.

If another device still shows personalized-looking ads

Confirm whether that device is signed in. A signed-in account setting is designed to follow the account across signed-in devices, while a signed-out choice is limited to its particular browser or device. Also check whether the ad is being delivered by a non-Google platform, which Google’s account setting cannot govern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you expected your viewing history to disappear

Review history-management settings separately. Turning off YouTube History’s use for ads limits one advertising signal; it does not necessarily delete the history stored in your account or disable recommendation use.

What each option can and cannot accomplish

The most complete reduction in Google’s use of account activity for YouTube ad personalization comes from turning off Personalized ads in My Ad Center. The narrower controls are useful when you want to remove particular activity categories, limit cross-app linking on Apple devices, or influence the subjects of ads. None of them is a universal ad blocker, and none controls advertising systems outside its stated scope.

For Google’s general explanation of personalized advertising, see YouTube’s “Turn off personalized ads” help page. For broader privacy explanations in YouTube apps, consult YouTube’s privacy basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off personalized ads remove YouTube ads entirely?

No. YouTube can still show non-personalized ads selected from contextual information such as the video topic, time of day, or location. YouTube identifies paid memberships as an ad-free option, which is separate from the personalization setting.

Does the My Ad Center switch apply to every device?

It applies across Google services, including YouTube, on devices where you are signed in to the same Google account. A signed-out browser or device has a separate local choice.

What is the difference between turning off Personalized ads and turning off YouTube History for ads?

Turning off Personalized ads is the broad account-level choice. Turning off YouTube History for ads is narrower: it stops that history from informing ads but does not necessarily delete saved history or stop YouTube from using it for recommendations.

Why do I still see an ad about a topic I limited?

Topic and brand controls change the mix of ads; they do not block every ad about a topic or reduce the total number of ads. A search or the current video context can still result in a related ad.

Does Apple’s Ask App Not to Track setting replace Google’s ad setting?

No. It prevents YouTube app activity from being linked with activity from non-Google apps and websites on that Apple device for personalized ads and measurement. It does not change your Google account’s Personalized ads choice or other Google apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to a signed-out ad choice if I use another browser?

The choice is tied to the current browser or device. Another browser, browser profile, or device may require its own setting, and clearing browser data can require you to set it again.

Can I turn off only Activity on sites and apps?

Yes. In My Ad Center, open Manage Privacy and turn off its use for ads. It is a separate control from YouTube History, so you can change one category or both.

Does this control ads served by non-Google platforms?

No. Google and YouTube account settings govern the stated Google advertising scope. They do not control advertising systems operated by other platforms.

The Bottom Line

For a signed-in YouTube account, turn off Personalized ads in My Ad Center and confirm. Use Manage Privacy for narrower YouTube History or Activity on sites and apps changes, and use the signed-out or Apple controls when those are the scopes you actually use. Ads can still appear because contextual advertising remains; only a separate paid YouTube membership option is presented as an ad-free route.
