Use two separate controls: your browser’s tracking protections to limit what websites and embedded content can collect, and your signed-in account’s activity controls to limit what a service stores about you. Review both. A stricter browser setting can interfere with sign-ins, video playback or embedded widgets, while an account setting does not block trackers on unrelated websites. Neither layer makes you anonymous or guarantees that every site will stop tracking.
Browser privacy and account privacy solve different problems
A browser setting acts mainly on traffic and storage handled in that browser. It can block or partition some third-party cookies and known trackers before they follow you across sites. An account setting acts on information a service saves when you are signed in, such as searches, browsing-related activity or advertising preferences.

| Control layer | What it changes | What it does not change | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser tracking protection | Blocks or partitions some third-party trackers, cookies and related technologies in the browser. | It does not erase activity already saved to a signed-in account, and it cannot force every website to honor a privacy signal. | Stronger blocking can break sign-ins, embedded content, social widgets or media playback. |
| Account activity controls | Controls whether a service saves activity to your account and whether it uses that data for personalization. | It does not stop unrelated websites from loading trackers or prevent all browser-side collection. | Turning off saving can reduce history-based recommendations and removes some convenience features. |
| Local history and cookie clearing | Removes selected data stored on the device or in the browser profile. | It does not automatically delete copies already stored in an online account. | You may be signed out of sites and lose locally stored preferences. |
The practical answer to “How do I stop websites from tracking me?” is therefore a sequence: enable the strongest browser protection you can tolerate, use exceptions only when a necessary feature fails, then review activity and ad settings in each account you use.

Chrome: treat Do Not Track as a request, not a blocker
Chrome’s optional control is a preference signal. On desktop, open Settings, choose Privacy and security, open Third-party cookies, and turn on the option to send a “Do Not Track” request with your browsing traffic. The exact wording and placement can vary by platform and Chrome version, so use the current Privacy and security section if the label differs.

This setting asks a website not to track you; it does not technically prevent tracking. Google Chrome Help states: “Most websites and web services, including Google’s, don’t change their behavior when they receive a Do Not Track request.” Read the current explanation at Google Chrome Help. Do not describe the switch as equivalent to blocking third-party cookies or as a guarantee that a site will comply.
Chrome’s third-party-cookie controls are a separate decision. If you block third-party cookies, some embedded services or cross-site sign-in flows may stop working. Start with the strictest setting that still supports the sites you need, and add a narrowly scoped exception only after identifying the broken function.
Edge: choose among Basic, Balanced and Strict
Microsoft Edge exposes three tracking-prevention levels. Go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Tracking prevention. Microsoft recommends Balanced for most people because it blocks many known trackers while preserving compatibility. The available choices are:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Level | Protection approach | Compatibility expectation | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Blocks only known malicious trackers. | Least likely to interfere with ordinary sites. | Use when a work portal, media site or sign-in fails under stronger settings. |
| Balanced | Blocks trackers from sites you have not visited and some harmful trackers. | Microsoft’s recommended balance between privacy and site functionality. | Best starting point for a normal daily profile. |
| Strict | Blocks the most trackers, including more cross-site tracking resources. | More likely to affect video playback, sign-in and other site behavior. | Use when reducing tracking matters more than seamless compatibility. |
Edge documents the levels and their compatibility effects in Microsoft’s tracking-prevention guide. If one site breaks, test Balanced before disabling all protection. A site-specific exception is preferable to weakening every website.
Firefox: use Enhanced Tracking Protection and site exceptions carefully
Mozilla says Firefox protects against known third-party trackers, social-media trackers, cryptominers, cookies and fingerprinting technologies. Its privacy notice describes the protections at Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice.
MDN’s current cross-browser comparison explains that Firefox enables Total Cookie Protection when Enhanced Tracking Protection is enabled. It partitions third-party cookies by the site that created them, so a cookie set while you visit one site is not automatically available to the same embedded service on another site. This reduces cross-site correlation without requiring every cookie to be deleted.
Firefox’s labels and menu paths can differ by desktop, Android and iOS release. Open the current Privacy or Enhanced Tracking Protection panel for your platform, select the stronger protection level available, and watch for the site-shield indicator when a page behaves differently. Keep an exception limited to the affected domain rather than turning protection off globally.

Safari: third-party-cookie protection is on by default, but verify the current path
MDN’s cross-browser summary reports that Safari’s tracking-prevention policy provides third-party-cookie protections by default. The exact controls and labels depend on the macOS, iOS or iPadOS version. Because those menus change, consult Apple’s current instructions for your specific device before following a printed step list. Do not assume a control shown in a Mac guide exists in the same place on an iPhone or iPad.
The important distinction remains the same: Safari’s browser protections limit some cross-site storage and tracking, but they do not delete activity that a signed-in service has already saved to its account.
Global Privacy Control: a preference signal available in the United States
Edge can send a Global Privacy Control preference indicating that data should not be sold or shared for targeted advertising. Microsoft says the setting is currently available in the United States and cautions that websites may or may not honor it. It is therefore a legal or policy preference signal, not a universal tracker blocker. See Microsoft’s Global Privacy Control documentation for the current switch and availability.
Understand the third-party-cookie trade-off
Third-party cookies are created by a domain different from the site in your address bar, often through advertising, analytics, video, comments or social widgets. Blocking them can reduce cross-site tracking, but MDN notes that websites and embedded components may behave unexpectedly when those cookies are unavailable. Browsers may use exceptions or compatibility heuristics to preserve a sign-in or another essential flow.
Use this troubleshooting sequence rather than immediately abandoning protection:
- Reproduce the problem in a private window or a fresh tab and note the exact feature that fails.
- Temporarily relax protection for that site only, if your browser offers a site exception.
- Reload the page and complete the sign-in or embedded action.
- Leave protection enabled for other sites and remove the exception if the feature later works without it.
If a site still fails, the cause may be an expired session, an extension, a blocked pop-up or a service outage rather than tracking protection. Do not treat a working page as proof that all trackers are now allowed; check the browser’s privacy indicator and keep the narrowest exception possible. MDN’s explanation of third-party-cookie behavior is at MDN Web Docs.

Google Web & App Activity

To review the account-level setting, sign in and open My Activity or the account’s Data & privacy area, then locate Web & App Activity. Google’s instructions are in Find & control your Web & App Activity. Use this sequence:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the Web & App Activity control and review whether saving is on.
- Turn the control off if you do not want new activity saved to the account.
- When prompted, choose whether to delete past activity. Turning saving off and deleting older records are separate choices.
- Inspect the option that can include Chrome history. Google says Chrome history can be included when the relevant checkbox is selected and Chrome history sync is enabled.
- Use the activity page’s date and product filters to remove only selected searches or visits if you want to keep other account history.
These controls affect what Google saves to the signed-in account; they do not erase the local browser profile automatically. If you use more than one Google account, check which account is active before changing or deleting activity.
Personalized ads and Privacy Checkup
Ad personalization is another account-level control. Google’s privacy guidance says signed-in users can review or turn off personalized ads in Ad Settings, and can use Privacy Checkup and activity tools to review saved data. Open the current account Data & privacy page, launch Privacy Checkup, and inspect the advertising and activity cards shown for your account.
Turning off personalized ads changes how Google uses account information to tailor advertising. It does not block trackers loaded by unrelated websites, remove browser cookies or prevent every ad from appearing. Pair it with the browser settings above when your goal is to reduce both account-based personalization and cross-site tracking. Google’s privacy overview is at How Google protects your privacy & keeps you in control.
Expect different labels and managed-account limits
Google says Search privacy settings are being updated and rolled out gradually. Two people may therefore see different labels or a different order of cards. Follow the account’s current Data & privacy or Privacy Checkup interface instead of relying on an old screenshot or a single universal path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEmployer- and school-managed accounts can restrict which activity controls are available. If a switch is missing, read the account notice or contact the administrator; changing local browser settings cannot override a policy imposed on a managed account.
A practical setup for common privacy goals
If you want fewer cross-site trackers
- Choose Balanced tracking prevention in Edge, enable Enhanced Tracking Protection in Firefox, or use the strongest compatible third-party-cookie protection in your browser.
- In Chrome, understand that Do Not Track is only a request; do not count it as enforcement.
- Test the sites you rely on, especially payment, work, school, video and identity-provider pages.
- When a required feature fails, create a domain-specific exception and document why you created it.
- Review the browser after major updates because protection levels and compatibility behavior can change.
If you want a service to stop retaining searches or browsing-related activity
- Open that service’s signed-in account privacy page rather than only clearing browser history.
- Turn off the relevant activity-saving control.
- Delete past activity separately if you want old records removed.
- Check whether a browser-history checkbox, synchronization setting or linked product is still sending data.
- Review advertising personalization independently; it is not the same control as activity retention.
If you share a computer
Use separate browser profiles or private browsing for temporary sessions, then clear local history and cookies when appropriate. Remember that private browsing changes what is retained locally; it does not make you invisible to a website or automatically change a signed-in account’s retention settings.

Questions readers commonly ask
How do I stop websites from tracking me?
There is no single switch that stops every form of tracking. Turn on the strongest compatible browser protection, limit third-party cookies, and use a narrow exception only when an important feature fails. Then review the activity controls for every signed-in service you use. Those account controls reduce what the service retains, while the browser controls act on collection in the browser.
How do I block third-party cookies?
Open your browser’s privacy settings and look for third-party-cookie controls. In Edge, Tracking prevention provides Basic, Balanced and Strict choices; in Firefox, Enhanced Tracking Protection enables Total Cookie Protection; Safari provides third-party-cookie protections by default according to MDN. Chrome’s Do Not Track switch is not cookie blocking, so use Chrome’s separate third-party-cookie setting. Expect some embedded media, widgets or sign-in flows to need an exception.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I turn off tracking without breaking every site?
Start with a balanced or recommended level, test payment, work, school, video and identity-provider sites, and increase protection gradually. If one function fails, relax protection for that domain only. A global shutdown sacrifices privacy on every site to fix one compatibility problem.
How do I stop Google from saving my searches?
In the signed-in Google Account, open My Activity or Data & privacy, review Web & App Activity, and turn saving off. Choose separately whether to delete previous activity. Check the Chrome-history inclusion option and synchronization status, because Google says Chrome history can be included when both relevant conditions are met. Clearing Chrome history alone only changes local browser data.
Does Do Not Track guarantee that a site will stop?
No. It sends a request that a site can ignore. Google Chrome Help says most websites and web services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior when they receive the request.
Does Global Privacy Control block trackers?
No. Edge can send a preference that data not be sold or shared for targeted advertising. Microsoft says it is currently available in the United States and warns that sites may or may not honor it. Treat it as a preference signal, not enforcement.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can’t I find the setting described in a guide?
Browser menus vary by platform and version, and Google account interfaces can roll out gradually. Look in the current Privacy and security or Data & privacy area, and use the device-specific Apple instructions for Safari. Work and school administrators may also hide or control account switches.
Best Value
Do I need to buy software or hardware?
The controls covered here are built into mainstream browsers and account dashboards. A privacy screen, security key or VPN device addresses a different privacy or security problem and is not required for these tracking and activity-setting steps.
What each control cannot promise
- A Do Not Track request can be ignored; Google says most websites and web services do not change behavior when they receive it.
- Strict tracker prevention can interfere with legitimate features, so “strongest” is not universally best.
- Deleting local history does not delete account activity, and turning off account saving does not remove local cookies.
- Turning off personalized ads does not block trackers across unrelated sites.
- Browser protections and account controls do not make a person anonymous or prevent every form of tracking.
- Browser behavior, menu labels and account interfaces can change by device, version and gradual rollout.
Maintenance checklist
Privacy settings are not a one-time installation. Recheck them after a browser update, when you add a new device, or when you sign into a new account.
- Confirm the browser’s tracking-prevention level and review any site exceptions.
- Check whether third-party cookies are blocked, limited or allowed for a specific site.
- Open each important signed-in account’s activity page and verify retention choices.
- Review ad-personalization settings separately from activity history.
- Delete old activity when your goal includes removing records already stored online.
- Inspect managed-account notices if a work or school profile behaves differently.
- Test essential sites after tightening protection, then narrow exceptions instead of disabling privacy controls globally.
The most reliable arrangement is layered: browser protections reduce what sites can collect in the browser, while account controls reduce what signed-in services retain and use. Choose the strictness that your essential sites can support, and revisit both layers when the software or account interface changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can browser privacy settings make me anonymous?
No. They limit some browser-side tracking, but they do not guarantee anonymity or stop every site from collecting information.
Is Balanced Edge tracking prevention enough?
Balanced is Microsoft’s recommended compromise for most people. Strict blocks more trackers but is more likely to affect sign-ins, video playback and other site behavior.
What is the difference between deleting browser history and deleting Google activity?
Browser-history deletion removes selected data from the device or browser profile. Google Web & App Activity controls data saved to the signed-in account; you may need to do both.
Why did a site stop working after I blocked cookies?
The site or an embedded component may depend on third-party cookies. Try a domain-specific exception, and remove it later if the feature works without one.
Does turning off personalized ads stop ads?
No. It changes account-based ad personalization. It does not block unrelated-site trackers, remove cookies or prevent ads from appearing.
Will my work or school account show the same privacy controls?
Not necessarily. Administrators can restrict activity settings, and Google may show different labels during gradual interface rollouts.
The Bottom Line
Use both layers: stronger compatible browser protection to limit cross-site collection, and account activity controls to limit what signed-in services retain. Treat Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control as signals, not guarantees, and use narrow site exceptions when stricter blocking breaks an essential feature.
