To limit the frame rate OBS sends to YouTube, open Settings > Video and choose the desired rate under Common FPS Value. That setting controls OBS’s overall video output; it is not a separate frame-rate cap for an individual prerecorded Media Source.
Set OBS’s output frame rate
- In OBS, open Settings, then select Video.
- Find Common FPS Value and choose the output rate you want, such as 30 or 60 fps. OBS describes this as the desired output FPS. See OBS’s Video settings overview.
- Apply the setting and check the stream. If 60 fps is not working reliably, try 30 fps. OBS’s performance guide explains that fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work and advises: “If 60 fps is not working for you, try dropping it to 30.” OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting (published June 12, 2021).
What the FPS setting changes for a Media Source
For a local prerecorded video, add the file as an OBS Media Source. Media Source handles playback properties such as looping, restarting, decoding, and playback speed; the cited guide does not document an independent FPS cap for the source. The output rate you choose under Settings > Video governs the OBS stream, not the original file’s frame rate. OBS Media Sources guide describes supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.

Choose between 30 and 60 fps
| Output choice | When it may fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | When you want to reduce rendering and encoding work, or 60 fps is not working reliably. | Fewer output frames than 60 fps; the best choice depends on the material and desired viewing result. |
| 60 fps | When the motion in the video and the available system capacity make this output rate appropriate. | OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30-fps streaming. |
These are OBS output choices, not claims about YouTube’s current accepted or preferred frame rates. The OBS materials cited here do not establish current YouTube encoder requirements; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for current platform specifications.
If lowering FPS is not enough
OBS also identifies reducing output resolution as a way to reduce GPU resources. Treat that as a separate performance adjustment: FPS controls how many frames OBS outputs, while resolution controls the dimensions of those frames. Change resolution only if it suits your intended stream and performance needs. OBS’s performance guide discusses both adjustments.
