On iPhone, you can control App Store cellular access and review separate download, update, and in-app-content settings, but Apple does not describe each as a Wi-Fi-only switch. These settings cover app-store activity—not necessarily files a game downloads after you open it.
What these settings control
Game installs, automatic app updates, operating-system updates, and extra files downloaded from inside a game are separate kinds of traffic. The steps below address App Store and Google Play activity. A game may still download maps, textures, voice packs, or other content through its own connection; check that game’s settings for download controls.

Operating-system updates use separate settings and are not governed by the app-store controls here. Apple Screen Time can restrict installing or deleting apps and apply age ratings, but it controls access rather than whether a transfer uses Wi-Fi.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then go to Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps.
- Select Update over Wi-Fi only to keep routine automatic app updates from using mobile data. Google Play lists this as one of its automatic-update choices. Google Play Help
Control automatic updates for one game
In Google Play, go to Manage apps & device > Manage, open the game’s details page, tap More, and review Enable auto update. This lets you control whether that game is automatically updated.

Initial installs and limited-data updates
For a new game or a download you start yourself, look for App download preference in Play Store settings if it is available on your device. Google’s cited instructions do not establish one current path that applies to every Android version, so the location and options may differ.
Google Play also offers Update with limited amount of mobile data to a limited group of users. It tries Wi-Fi first and then uses a budget; it is not a strict Wi-Fi-only option or a fixed data quota. Google Play Help

Limit App Store cellular use on iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > App Store.
- Review Cellular Data, App Downloads, App Updates, and, if relevant, In-App Content.
- To block App Store activity from using cellular data broadly, turn off Cellular Data. You can also review the individual automatic-download settings.

Check these exceptions before relying on Wi-Fi-only behavior
Game downloads after installation
App-store settings do not establish how every game handles extra content after installation. Check the game’s own settings for options such as downloading content only on Wi-Fi. If your phone offers cellular controls for an individual game, use them when you need to block that game’s cellular access.

Android security updates and managed devices
Google says critical updates for security vulnerabilities may happen regardless of app or device update settings. Google Play Help: update apps
On a managed Android device, an administrator’s Google Play policy may override your preferences. Managed Google Play’s default update conditions typically include Wi-Fi, charging, idle state, and the app not being in the foreground; policies can relax some conditions, and the network condition is relaxed for some system packages. iPhone Wi-Fi fallback
Apple’s Connectivity Assist can use cellular when Wi-Fi is slow or unusable. Check Settings > Wi-Fi and turn it off if you need to avoid that fallback; Apple also describes disabling it for a particular network. It can use more cellular data. Apple Support: About Wi-Fi Assist

If a game still uses mobile data
- Check whether the data is an app update, a new install, or content downloaded from inside the game.
- On Android, confirm Auto-update apps is set to Update over Wi-Fi only, and inspect the game’s Enable auto update option.
- On iPhone, review App Store cellular settings and Connectivity Assist if Wi-Fi is weak.
- Look in the game’s own settings for its content-download policy; store settings cannot guarantee that every in-game download stays on Wi-Fi.
- If the phone is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether an update policy is in force.
