To keep an AI agent on an OPPO phone from accessing more than it needs, change two sets of controls: revoke or narrow sensitive permissions in Permission manager, then separately disable auto-launch and restrict background activity. Turning off one does not automatically change the other.
Start by checking Settings > About phone for your ColorOS version. Menu names and locations differ between ColorOS 14 and newer, ColorOS 11–13, and older releases. OPPO also says AI features and controls vary by model, region, software build, cloud capability, account requirements and rollout, so use the labels shown on your specific device.

Why permission control and background control are separate
An AI agent can use a microphone, camera, location, photos, files or contacts only when the operating system grants the corresponding permission. Those grants are managed in Permission manager. Separately, ColorOS can allow an app to start itself, remain active when you are not using it, keep a service running for notifications or place an overlay over another app. Those behaviors are controlled by auto-launch, battery and special-access settings.

- Give the agent only the permissions required for the task, using Allow only while using, Ask every time or Don’t allow where those choices are offered.
- Turn off auto-launch and choose a restrictive background-power policy unless you specifically need continuous operation or proactive notifications.
An agent that can no longer use the microphone may still start in the background if auto-launch is enabled. Conversely, an app prevented from starting automatically may retain access to files or location the next time you open it. Treat these as two independent decisions.
1. Check your ColorOS version before changing anything
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (or About device on some builds).
- Record the displayed ColorOS version and, if shown, the software build number.
OPPO support documentation uses different paths for ColorOS 14 and newer, ColorOS 11–13 and older editions. A carrier or regional build may rename a menu, move it under a different heading or omit a control. If a path below is not present, use Settings search for Permission manager, Auto launch, Special app access or Display over other apps rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
2. Remove or narrow the agent’s sensitive permissions
ColorOS 14 and newer
- Open Settings > Security and Privacy.
- Tap Privacy (on some releases this is labelled Privacy Control).
- Open Permission manager.
- Choose a permission category, such as Microphone, Camera, Location, Photos and videos or Files.
- Select the AI agent and set the least access that still supports your intended feature.
ColorOS 11–13
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Permission or Permission manager.
- Choose a category, select the agent and change its access level.
Review the categories individually. An agent that summarizes a document may need a file or photo picker but not contacts, SMS or phone access. A voice command feature may need microphone access while it is in use, but not camera or location. Check contacts, phone, SMS, calendar, nearby devices and notification-related access as well as the obvious microphone, camera, location and storage categories.

Choose an access level deliberately

When ColorOS offers an “only this time” or similar one-use choice, prefer it for a single task. Denying a required permission is not a security error; it simply means that feature cannot run until you grant access. Revisit the setting after the task instead of leaving a broad grant permanently enabled.

A practical permission map

The table describes a decision method, not a guarantee that every ColorOS build exposes the same granular choices. The agent’s own feature description should explain why it requests access. If the requested permission does not match the task, choose Don’t allow and test whether the feature can work without it.
3. Stop automatic starts and restrict background activity
Turn off auto-launch in Settings
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap Auto launch (the label may be Auto-launch).
- Find the AI agent and switch auto-launch off.
With auto-launch disabled, the agent should not start itself after boot or in response to routine background triggers. You may stop receiving proactive notifications, scheduled actions or other functions that depend on an always-running process. Leave it enabled only when that continuous behavior is a conscious requirement.
Use Phone Manager when your release provides it
Some ColorOS versions place equivalent controls in Phone Manager > Privacy Permissions > Startup Manager or Auto-launch. The same area may show Blocking Records, which can help identify blocked startup attempts. OPPO notes that this Phone Manager option is not present on every release. If it is missing, use the Settings path or search for the app’s startup controls.
Restrict battery and background power use
- Open the agent’s entry under Settings > Apps.
- Open its Battery, Power consumption or similarly named control.
- Select the restrictive background option when continuous operation is unnecessary. Exact labels vary by release; choose the setting that limits background activity rather than unrestricted use.
Battery restriction can delay notifications, stop a long-running task when the screen is off or require you to reopen the app before it responds. If reliable alerts matter more than background limits, use a less restrictive option but keep unnecessary permissions revoked. This lets you preserve notification delivery without granting camera, microphone or file access the agent does not need.

What ColorOS 17 changes—and what it does not
OPPO says the ColorOS 17 Laminar Flow Engine can keep over 25% more apps running in the background during multitasking than ColorOS 16. OPPO identifies this as a laboratory result and says actual experience varies; it is not a universal battery-life or privacy measurement. More aggressive memory management does not remove your ability to restrict one app. Auto-launch and the agent’s battery policy still determine whether that particular app can keep working in the background.
4. Audit special app access
Disable overlays unless the agent truly needs one
- Open Settings > Apps > Special app access.
- Tap Display over other apps.
- Select the AI agent and switch the permission off unless an overlay is an intentional part of the feature.
An overlay can place controls or content on top of another app. That can be useful for an assistant bubble, but it also expands what the agent can present while you are viewing a different screen. Do not treat an overlay grant as equivalent to a normal notification permission.
Inspect every other special-access entry shown
The list differs by ColorOS version, but may include Accessibility, Notification access, Usage access, Unrestricted battery use and Install unknown apps. Open each relevant entry and ask whether the agent needs it for a named task. Accessibility and notification access can expose information from other apps; unrestricted battery use can defeat the background limits you just set; install-unknown-apps access can permit package installation. Turn off any entry that lacks a clear, current purpose.

On ColorOS 12, Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard provides an overview of recent permission use. Review the timeline after testing the agent to see whether it accessed the microphone, camera or location when you did not expect it.

ColorOS 12 also provides microphone and camera switches in the control center. Turning either switch off disables that sensor for apps until you turn it back on. This is a fast emergency measure or a useful way to test whether an agent really requires a sensor. It does not replace the per-app permission setting: restore the sensor switch only when you are ready to use an app that needs it.

ColorOS 17 Agent Mode
OPPO’s ColorOS 17 announcement describes AI Mind Pilot Agent Mode as able to work directly with photos and files stored on the device, search across multiple sources, use tools and coordinate multiple steps from one request. Those capabilities make least-privilege settings especially important: a broad file grant or overlay permission can affect more than a single chat response.
Read the Transparency Report
ColorOS 17 introduces a Transparency Report that shows which AI services were used, when they were accessed and what operations were performed. After trying an agent, open that report and compare the recorded activity with the task you asked for. If it shows an unexpected service, time or operation, stop the workflow, revoke the related permission and disable the relevant special access before testing again. Availability of the report depends on the device, region and software rollout.

Understand the security claims in context
OPPO’s Mobile Agent Security Technology White Paper (2025) says its behavior grading covers “200+” sensitive operations. It describes automatic extraction and display of “permission request–behavior intent” privacy labels, visualized permission purposes, agent API-call tracing and warnings for risky behavior. These are descriptions of OPPO’s security framework, not a promise that every shipping phone exposes every control or warning. Continue to verify permissions and activity yourself.
7. Choose settings by the result you need

8. Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The agent no longer completes a task
Return to Permission manager and identify the first resource the task uses. Grant only that category with Allow only while using or Ask every time, retry, and stop when the task succeeds. Do not restore every permission at once; that hides which access was actually necessary.
Notifications arrive late or not at all
Check whether auto-launch is off or the battery policy is restrictive. If timely alerts are essential, relax the background setting for this app only, then keep its unrelated permissions and special access disabled. A less restrictive battery policy does not require granting camera, microphone or file access.
The app still appears after auto-launch is disabled
Auto-launch controls automatic starts, not a session you opened yourself, a notification you tapped or an overlay already authorized. Check Display over other apps and the other special-access entries, then close the active session and test again after a restart. If the app continues to start unexpectedly, review Phone Manager’s Startup Manager or Blocking Records when those menus exist.

Confirm the ColorOS version and search Settings for the function name. A regional build may put permissions under Security and Privacy while an older build uses Privacy. Phone Manager’s startup controls are explicitly not available on every release, and AI features can be limited by model, law or rollout.
A software update changes the choices
Recheck the agent after a major ColorOS update. OPPO can rename a permission category, add a new special-access entry or change whether an AI feature requires an account or internet connection. Reapply the least-privilege policy rather than assuming the previous settings carried over unchanged.
9. A repeatable review checklist
- Record the ColorOS version in Settings > About phone.
- Write down the exact agent task you want to perform.
- In Permission manager, remove categories unrelated to that task.
- Use Allow only while using or Ask every time before considering an always-on grant.
- Turn off auto-launch unless proactive operation is necessary.
- Choose a restrictive battery policy and test whether required notifications still arrive.
- Disable Display over other apps unless an overlay is essential.
- Inspect accessibility, notification access, usage access, unrestricted battery use and install-unknown-apps entries shown on your phone.
- Use the Privacy Dashboard or control-center sensor switches when available.
- After a test, compare the agent’s activity with the requested task and review ColorOS 17’s Transparency Report when your device provides it.
- Repeat the review after a software update, device migration or installation of a new agent capability.
The safest practical configuration is not “deny everything forever”; it is to grant the smallest permission set for a defined task, prevent unneeded background starts, and verify what happened before leaving any access enabled.
