The reliable way to limit an AI agent is to enforce narrow permissions outside the model. Give it only the tools, records, resources and operations needed for the current task; check the agent identity, target, arguments and policy at execution time; require a person to approve consequential actions; and monitor, expire or revoke access as the task and role change. A prompt telling an agent to be careful does not remove capabilities granted by connected services.
This approach follows guidance from OpenAI, Microsoft and OWASP. It also assumes that prompt-injection defenses are imperfect, so limiting blast radius is more dependable than expecting a model to recognize every malicious instruction.

Why a prompt cannot enforce least privilege
An agent’s practical authority comes from the tools it can invoke and the permissions those tools enforce. The system prompt can describe a policy, but it is not an authorization boundary. If an integration lets the agent read every customer record or send mail from a broad account, a sentence such as “never disclose confidential data” does not technically prevent the call.

OWASP puts the boundary plainly: “This classification does not grant permission to run a tool; the execution component must still check the actor’s authorization and any required approval for the exact action.” Read the full AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Microsoft describes the broader principle as “Apply least agency, not just least privilege” in its June 30, 2026 Security Blog article: reduce what the agent is able to do, not merely what a human account could theoretically do.
- Model instructions explain desired behavior but can be misread, overridden by hostile content or bypassed by a tool implementation.
- Service authorization decides whether a requested operation is allowed for a particular identity, resource and set of arguments.
- Approval controls add a human decision for actions whose impact is significant or difficult to reverse.
- Monitoring and revocation detect misuse and end access when a task, session or role ends.
Design the latter three layers first, then use prompts as guidance rather than as the sole safeguard.
Start with one task and define its minimum authority
Before connecting an agent, write down the exact outcome it must produce. A useful access request names the operation, the data, the destination and the time window. “Summarize this quarter’s support tickets” is narrower than “manage the support system.” The first may require read access to a specified ticket set; the second could imply searching, editing, deleting, exporting or changing permissions.
1. List the required operations
Describe the one or two actions the agent must perform, using verbs that can be checked by software:
- Read a named set of records.
- Transform or summarize those records in an isolated workspace.
- Create a draft for a specified recipient, without sending it.
- Update a defined field on records that match an approved query.
Avoid vague grants such as “full access,” “administrator,” or a wildcard over every resource. If the task changes, create a new authorization decision instead of silently expanding the old one.
2. Map each operation to a resource
For every operation, identify the service, environment, tenant, project, folder, table, record class or account involved. Separate production from test systems and confidential data from ordinary data. The resulting map should let an executor answer, “Which identity is acting on which resource, and what exact operation is being requested?”
3. Remove everything unrelated
Disconnect unused tools and plugins, remove administrative roles, and eliminate broad search or network access when a fixed collection is sufficient. Fewer available tools also reduces the number of ways hostile content can steer the agent. Microsoft warns that every agent-to-tool, agent-to-service and agent-to-agent interaction expands the attack surface and can enable indirect prompt injection, unintended actions or data exfiltration. Separate reading from acting
Read-only access is an effective default for research, classification and summarization. Writing, sending, purchasing, deleting, changing permissions and deploying should use a distinct authorization path. A workflow can therefore let an agent inspect information and prepare a proposed change without allowing it to commit that change.
| Agent activity | Safer default | Additional control |
|---|---|---|
| Search or summarize approved records | Read-only scope limited to the required records or collections | Log queries and restrict export destinations |
| Create a draft message or change | Write to a draft or staging area, not the live destination | Show the exact content, recipients and fields before approval |
| Send information externally | No direct send permission during analysis | Action-specific human approval naming data and destination |
| Spend money or place an order | Quote or cart creation only | Require approval of amount, vendor, items and account |
| Delete data | Report affected objects or move them to a recoverable hold | Explicit approval, scope check and recovery window |
| Change permissions or deploy | Generate a proposed change in a test or review environment | Separate approver and audited release step |
Do not treat a model-generated statement that an action is safe as authorization. The executor should evaluate the requested operation independently, even when the agent claims that a user approved it.
Enforce authorization at the tool boundary
Put policy enforcement in a trusted tool executor, API gateway or service authorization layer. The model may request a function call, but a separate component should decide whether that call can run.
Checks every invocation should make
- Agent identity: identify the agent, session, tenant and, where applicable, the human or workflow that initiated it.
- Resource: resolve the exact account, project, record set, file, mailbox or environment targeted by the call.
- Action: distinguish read, create, update, send, purchase, delete, permission change and deployment operations rather than grouping them under a generic “write.”
- Arguments: validate recipients, quantities, fields, query scope, file paths, network destinations and other parameters against policy.
- Approval: verify that any required human decision covers this exact action, data and destination and has not expired or been reused outside its scope.
- Policy result: allow, deny or pause for review. Fail closed when identity, scope or approval information is missing.
A useful implementation pattern is a policy decision before the service call:
request = { agent, session, resource, action, arguments, approval_id }
decision = authorize(request)
if decision == 'allow': execute(request)
elif decision == 'approval_required': pause_and_notify(request)
else: deny_and_log(request)
The field names above are illustrative. Your platform may implement the same checks through an API gateway, service account policy, proxy or workflow engine; the important property is that the model cannot bypass the decision point.
Use narrow identities and credentials
Connect the agent with a scoped identity rather than a person’s broad account whenever the service supports it. Assign only the roles and resources needed for the task, and use separate identities for analysis, staging and production actions. Keep credentials out of prompts and agent-visible content when the integration can authenticate on the agent’s behalf.
Identity design is platform-dependent: the cited guidance supports scoped identities and access controls but does not prescribe one universal credential-vault setup. Confirm how your service issues, rotates, constrains and revokes tokens before deployment.

- Give a reporting agent read access to the reporting dataset, not the administrator role for the whole analytics account.
- Use a staging identity to create a draft or test deployment, then a separately controlled identity for release.
- Do not reuse a human session token across unrelated agents or tasks.
- Record which agent identity made each call so an incident can be tied to a policy and owner.
Make access temporary and revocable
OpenAI recommends limiting an agent’s access to only the data it needs to complete a task in Understanding prompt injections. The strongest form is task-scoped access that ends automatically when the task completes. If a service cannot provide that, set a short expiration and maintain a tested revocation path.

- Issue: create the narrow identity, resource scope and action scope for the current task.
- Use: enforce the same scope on every call and record the expiration time.
- Review: inspect activity for unexpected tools, resources, destinations or volume.
- Expire: remove the grant when the task, session or role ends; do not rely on an operator remembering later.
- Revoke: provide an immediate kill switch for suspected misuse, compromised integrations or a changed business requirement.
Apply the same discipline to memory and retained data. Decide what the agent may keep between turns, where summaries are stored, who can retrieve them and when they are deleted. A read permission that lasts for months, combined with long-lived memory, can create a broader exposure than the original task requires.
Design human approval for consequential actions
Human review is most useful when it is specific. An approval should identify the action, affected data, destination, amount or other material parameters. “Approve all actions for this agent” is an open-ended delegation and defeats the purpose of the gate.
Actions that normally deserve a gate
- Sending confidential or regulated information outside the organization.
- Spending money, placing orders or changing billing arrangements.
- Deleting records, files, accounts or backups.
- Changing permissions, identity settings or security controls.
- Deploying code or configuration to a live environment.
- Publishing content under a person’s or organization’s identity.
Show the reviewer the proposed operation in a form that can be checked: the exact recipients, records, fields, files, environment, amount and destination. Bind the resulting approval to those values and to a short validity period. If any material parameter changes, require a new decision.
Microsoft’s security guidance and OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance both emphasize approval for high-impact actions. Approval does not replace authorization; the executor still checks that the agent identity and requested operation are permitted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Understand prompt injection and reduce its blast radius
A prompt injection is hostile or unintended instruction content placed where an agent can read it, such as a web page, document, email, ticket or tool response. The content may tell the agent to ignore its original task, reveal data, call another tool or send information to an attacker. Because the agent processes both trusted instructions and untrusted content through language, defenses are not perfect.
OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance recommends limiting access to only the data needed for the task. OWASP likewise advises constraining authority and isolating execution. Treat external content as data to analyze, not as a new authority source.

Contain an injection if one succeeds
- Expose only the tools required for the current workflow.
- Keep sensitive sources in separate scopes so a compromised task cannot search everything.
- Block unnecessary network egress and restrict destinations for uploads or messages.
- Run risky transformations or code in an isolated environment without production credentials.
- Require approval before an instruction found in external content can trigger a consequential action.
- Log the source content, tool request and policy decision so investigators can reconstruct the path.
Do not claim that a prompt, classifier or confirmation dialog can prevent every injection. The objective is to ensure that a mistaken or manipulated agent has limited opportunity to cause harm.

Signals worth reviewing
- Calls to tools outside the task plan or a newly added integration.
- Attempts to access a different tenant, project, mailbox, folder or data class.
- Repeated denials, approval requests or unusual query breadth.
- Unexpected exports, network destinations, message recipients or data volume.
- Changes in tool descriptions, plugins, models, dependencies or service permissions.
Test prompt-injection handling and unsafe tool use before production, after material model or integration changes, and when the task scope changes. Tests should verify both the expected result and the denial path: an agent that can summarize approved records should be unable to send those records, alter permissions or reach an unrelated system.
Govern tools, plugins, models and data sources
Maintain an inventory of every integration an agent can reach, the identity it uses, the data it can access, the operations it can perform and the owner responsible for review. Tool descriptions and dependencies can affect behavior; an update can add a new parameter, broaden a query or introduce a new destination.
- Assign an owner and business purpose to each integration.
- Review requested scopes and dangerous operations before enabling an update.
- Pin or otherwise control versions where your platform permits it, and retest after changes.
- Remove unused tools promptly instead of leaving dormant permissions available.
- Document the approval policy, logging location, expiration rule and emergency revocation procedure.
Microsoft’s guidance on least privilege for AI agents with Microsoft Entra Agent ID provides a useful identity-and-governance framing, while OWASP’s cheat sheet covers agent-specific authorization and execution concerns.
A practical rollout sequence
- Choose a bounded use case. Write the expected input, output, services and maximum impact.
- Inventory dependencies. List every tool, data source, plugin, model and identity in the proposed workflow.
- Create the minimum scope. Start with read-only access and named resources; remove wildcard and administrative permissions.
- Place an enforcement point. Route every tool call through a component that checks identity, resource, action, arguments and policy.
- Add approval gates. Pause sends, purchases, deletions, permission changes and deployments for specific review.
- Set expiration and revocation. Make grants end with the task where possible and test the emergency disable path.
- Instrument and test. Log calls, exercise injection and denial scenarios, and verify that external content cannot expand authority.
- Review after launch. Examine actual activity, remove unused access and reassess every integration update.
How to evaluate an agent platform or architecture
Feature names differ between vendors, so compare the control itself rather than a marketing label. The following questions expose whether a platform can enforce least agency in practice.

| External authorization | Is every call checked outside the model at execution time, including arguments and approval status? |
| Read-only and separate identities | Can analysis use a read-only scope and can staging, production and human workflows use distinct identities? |
| Approval controls | Can a reviewer approve one action with its exact data, destination, amount and expiration rather than granting open-ended authority? |
| Audit and monitoring | Are identity, tool, resource, arguments, decision, approval and outcome recorded and searchable? |
| Revocation and duration | Can task-scoped or time-limited access expire automatically and be disabled immediately? |
| Isolation and egress | Can execution be separated from production systems and can outbound destinations be restricted? |
| Integration governance | Are tool, plugin, model and data-source changes inventoried, reviewed and retested? |
Do not infer that a platform has these controls merely because it supports tool calling or an agent identity. Verify the enforcement behavior, logs and failure modes in the configuration you will operate.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The system prompt says never to delete anything.”
Problem: the connected API still grants delete permission. Fix: remove the operation from the identity or require an executor-level approval that names the objects to be deleted.
“We gave the agent one broad service account for convenience.”
Problem: a prompt injection or coding mistake can reach unrelated data and actions. Fix: split identities by task and environment, then grant only named resources and operations.
“A human approved the workflow once.”
Problem: later calls may target different records, recipients or amounts. Fix: bind approval to the exact action and arguments, with an expiration; request a new approval when they change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“We log the final answer but not tool calls.”
Problem: you cannot determine what data the agent accessed or which action caused an incident. Fix: record identity, resource, operation, arguments, policy result, approval and outcome at the execution boundary.
“The agent needs permanent access because the task recurs.”
Problem: a long-lived grant accumulates risk as requirements and integrations change. Fix: use short-lived task grants or scheduled reauthorization, and maintain a tested revocation path.
“The plugin was trusted when it was installed.”
Problem: descriptions, dependencies and capabilities can change. Fix: inventory updates, review new scopes and retest prompt-injection and authorization behavior before re-enabling production access.
What good looks like
A well-bounded agent can explain a request, but it cannot turn that explanation into permission. It receives a narrow identity and temporary scope, reads only the records required, prepares non-destructive output, pauses before consequential actions, and sends every call through an executor that checks the exact request. Operators can see what happened, detect unusual behavior and revoke access without waiting for the model or a user prompt to cooperate.
