To reduce a smart appliance’s internet traffic, first disable optional connected features in the appliance’s app, then use your router’s device controls to monitor, schedule, warn, or limit that appliance. The exact controls depend on the appliance model, app, router firmware, and internet service. A complete Wi-Fi disconnection stops online communication but also removes remote control and other cloud features.
There is no reliable universal figure for how many megabytes a refrigerator, washer, oven, or other smart appliance uses. Manufacturers describe different data categories and connection behaviors, so measure your own device before imposing a hard limit.

What “limiting data use” actually means
People use “data use” to mean two different things:
Recommended Free Tools
- Network traffic: the amount of data moving between the appliance, your router, cloud services, and mobile devices. This is what a router usage meter, monthly allowance, or disconnection rule can affect.
- Data collection: information a manufacturer or app records about appliance status, usage, commands, diagnostics, or account activity. Reducing traffic does not necessarily change the manufacturer’s privacy practices.
For example, Maytag’s Connected Appliance Privacy Notice describes collecting appliance status and usage data, app usage, and instructions sent through apps. That notice does not quantify the number of megabytes transmitted. A router setting can reduce or stop the connection, but it cannot rewrite the manufacturer’s privacy policy.

Whirlpool states that “Smart Features require you to have a wireless Internet connection and data connectivity for your Smart Appliance and mobile device.” That means turning off networking can disable functions that are designed to depend on the internet, rather than merely reducing background traffic.
Before changing anything: identify the appliance and measure it
Find the exact model and companion app
Record the appliance’s model number, the name of its mobile app, and the account used to register it. Model families often share a marketing name while having different menus, radios, firmware, and cloud requirements. The appliance manual or support page is the authoritative place to check whether a feature can operate locally.
UK Government guidance on using smart devices safely in the home directs owners to manufacturer documentation for device-specific setup and management. Use that documentation to look for sections labelled Connectivity, Smart Features, Remote Control, Network, Privacy, Communications, Usage Data, or Reset Network Settings.
Establish a baseline
Before blocking or limiting the device, note its current behavior for several days or a billing cycle if your connection is metered. Use your router’s connected-device list and usage history when available. Record the appliance’s hostname, MAC address, IP address, and the time period shown by the router. A device may appear under a generic name, so confirm it by temporarily switching the appliance’s Wi-Fi off and watching which entry disappears.
Do not convert a short observation into a universal estimate. The available manufacturer and government material does not establish a typical daily or monthly data figure for smart appliances.
Reduce traffic in the appliance app
App controls are usually the least disruptive option because they can preserve the functions you still need.

Disable optional remote features
- Open the appliance’s companion app and select the exact appliance.
- Open Settings, Smart Features, Remote Access, or the equivalent model-specific menu.
- Turn off features you do not use, such as remote start, remote monitoring, status notifications, voice-assistant integration, location-based automations, or cloud recipe and content services.
- Save the change, then check whether the app reports the appliance as offline or whether only that feature is disabled.
Some features may be bundled. A remote-start switch could also control push notifications or energy reports, and a firmware-update setting may not be optional. The manual should identify dependencies and whether safety functions remain local.

If the app offers diagnostic sharing, product-improvement reporting, advertising personalization, or optional usage analytics, decide which categories you want to permit. These choices address collection and may not stop essential service traffic. Read the manufacturer’s privacy notice for the appliance and app rather than assuming that one toggle blocks every connection.
Turn off Wi-Fi without deleting the appliance
When a model provides a separate connectivity switch, use it if you may want to reconnect later. Take a screenshot of the network name and account details first. Re-enabling Wi-Fi can require a pairing process, a temporary Bluetooth connection, or a reset of the appliance’s network profile.
Use the router to monitor the appliance
Locate the correct device
- Open the router’s mobile app or administration page.
- Go to Connected Devices, Clients, Network Map, or the equivalent list.
- Match the appliance by hostname, manufacturer identifier, MAC address, signal information, or the time it joined the network.
- Rename the entry to a clear label such as “Kitchen oven” and record whether the router is showing Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a mesh-node connection.
Router interfaces differ substantially. A device can have separate entries for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios, use a randomized hardware address, or reconnect with a new address after a reset. Verify the identity before applying a block or quota.
Check whether a control is per-device or network-wide
A router may show traffic for each client while offering limits only for the entire internet connection. A monthly allowance displayed on the broadband or cellular uplink is not automatically a quota for one appliance. Read the setting’s description and test it on a nonessential device if the behavior is unclear.

| Control | What it does | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usage reporting | Shows traffic by client, connection, or billing period when supported. | Finding whether the appliance is a meaningful contributor. | A report may aggregate traffic or identify the wrong client. |
| Alert threshold | Notifies you when a configured amount or percentage is reached. | Awareness while keeping online features available. | Alerts may be delayed, and the threshold may apply to the whole connection. |
| Schedule | Pauses or blocks internet access during selected hours. | Stopping overnight or unneeded background communication. | Remote commands, notifications, and cloud automations will not work during the block. |
| Hard allowance | Disconnects internet access after a configured amount is consumed. | A metered connection where exceeding the allowance has a direct cost. | The appliance may go offline unexpectedly when the limit is reached. |
| Pause or block | Immediately prevents the selected client from reaching the internet. | Short-term troubleshooting or an emergency stop. | It can interrupt updates, diagnostics, and remote safety-related workflows. |
What the documented Deco example shows
TP-Link’s support article “How to configure Data Settings on 4G/5G Deco router,” updated 1 February 2025, documents real-time monitoring and monthly or total allowances in the Deco app for the Deco X80-5G, X50-4G, and X20-4G. The article says the configured allowance can trigger alerts and that the Deco disconnects from the internet once the allowance is exceeded. It also warns that product availability varies by region.

This is a cellular Deco feature example, not evidence that every router supports the same controls. The documentation does not establish that the allowance can target one appliance rather than the entire Deco internet connection. Confirm the scope shown in your own app before relying on it.
Set a warning before a hard cutoff
If your objective is to learn how much the appliance uses, start with reporting or an alert. A warning preserves connectivity and gives you a chance to inspect the appliance before a cutoff. If you later configure a hard allowance, write down the reset date, the unit used by the router, and what the router will disconnect when the threshold is reached.
Use a schedule for predictable downtime
A schedule is often more practical than a quota when you only want to prevent unnecessary overnight communication. Choose hours when nobody needs remote control or notifications. Check whether the router’s schedule follows local time, daylight-saving changes, and the correct time zone. If the appliance performs cloud-based updates, avoid blocking the manufacturer’s stated maintenance window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDisconnect the appliance completely when necessary
If the app has no suitable controls and the router cannot isolate the device, remove the appliance from Wi-Fi. The precise menu differs by model, but common paths are Settings → Network → Forget Network, Settings → Wi-Fi → Reset, or a physical network-reset button.
Whirlpool says a user can check that a Smart Appliance is not transmitting data to Whirlpool by disconnecting it from the router, for example by resetting network settings or having the appliance forget the home network. This is a Whirlpool-specific statement; consult the documentation for your own appliance before using a reset procedure.
What you lose when Wi-Fi is removed
- Remote start, remote monitoring, and app commands.
- Push notifications and cloud-based alerts.
- Voice-assistant control and automations that depend on the manufacturer’s service.
- Cloud recipes, downloadable content, or usage dashboards.
- Automatic online diagnostics and firmware delivery, unless the model supports a local or USB update method.
Core local operation may continue, but do not assume that every function remains available. A manual, timer, or physical control can be required for tasks that previously used the app.

Separate traffic limits from privacy decisions
A device can send a small amount of traffic while the manufacturer still retains appliance status, usage, app, or command records. Conversely, a large software update can create a temporary traffic spike without changing the categories of information collected.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Read the manufacturer’s privacy notice for answers about retention, account association, sharing, and deletion. A router can observe or block packets on your network, but it generally cannot tell a cloud provider to erase information already associated with your account. If privacy is the priority, use the account’s privacy controls and the manufacturer’s request or deletion process in addition to network controls.
Keep the appliance and router secure while reducing traffic
Security settings should not be sacrificed for a lower data bill. The Federal Trade Commission advises changing default settings, enabling encryption, and checking for updates on internet-connected devices. Apply those recommendations to both the router and the appliance when supported.
- Change the router’s default administrator password and use a unique password for the appliance account.
- Enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption when compatible; do not run the home network open.
- Install router firmware and appliance updates from the manufacturer’s official process.
- Disable remote administration of the router unless you have a specific, protected need.
- Use a guest or IoT network when it provides isolation without breaking the appliance’s required local communication.
- Review connected clients periodically and remove devices you no longer own.
NIST’s Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products (NISTIR 8425A, published 10 September 2024) addresses router cybersecurity in networks that include smart-home IoT devices. Blocking traffic is not a substitute for patched firmware, encryption, and strong account controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a router for appliance data controls
If you are comparing routers, evaluate the exact model and firmware rather than the product family’s marketing description.
| Question | Why it matters | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Does it report usage by individual device? | You need client-level measurement to identify one appliance’s traffic. | Some routers show client reports; capabilities vary. |
| Can it set a device-specific allowance? | A whole-connection cap will not necessarily limit one appliance. | The cited Deco guidance does not establish a per-appliance cap. |
| Are alerts available? | Alerts let you investigate before losing connectivity. | The cited Deco models support alerts with their documented data settings. |
| Can access be scheduled? | Schedules reduce traffic at known times without tracking a quota. | Availability and menu names vary by router. |
| What happens at the limit? | A cutoff can disable remote functions unexpectedly. | TP-Link says the referenced Deco disconnects from the internet at the configured allowance. |
| Does it work with your service and region? | Cellular, fiber, cable, and fixed-wireless systems expose different controls. | TP-Link notes regional product availability; compatibility must be checked locally. |
Do not buy a router solely because its dashboard displays a data number. Confirm whether the number is for the entire WAN connection, an individual client, or a selected profile, and whether the router enforces the limit or only reports it.

Troubleshooting common problems
The appliance still appears online after you disabled it
Check whether you disabled remote features rather than Wi-Fi itself. Confirm the device’s current MAC address and look for a second client entry. If the appliance has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, disconnect both paths. Cached status in the app can remain visible after the network session ends, so verify from the router and from a fresh app login.
The router cannot identify the appliance
Rename the appliance in its app if possible, then reconnect it and watch the router’s client list. Compare the MAC address shown by the appliance with the router entry. Mesh systems can display a node name instead of the appliance name, and privacy-related randomized addresses can change how a client is labelled.
A quota disconnected more devices than expected
Stop using the setting until you determine its scope. Some allowances apply to the complete internet connection or a profile containing several clients. Restore service, inspect the setting’s description, and test with a clearly identified, nonessential client before applying it again.
Remote control stopped after a schedule or block
Remove the schedule or pause rule, reconnect the appliance, and allow time for the cloud service to re-establish its session. If the appliance was removed from Wi-Fi, use its documented network-join procedure. Recheck app permissions and account pairing only after the router shows the appliance online.
The appliance will not reconnect after a network reset
Confirm the correct Wi-Fi band, password, and security mode. Move the appliance within reliable range during pairing, disable a temporary VPN or captive portal, and follow the model’s reset sequence exactly. A factory reset can erase more than network settings, so do not use it unless the manual distinguishes it from a network reset.
A practical decision path
- Need only less background traffic? Turn off optional cloud features and notifications in the appliance app.
- Need evidence before making a change? Identify the appliance in the router and record usage over a representative period.
- Need predictable offline hours? Use a device schedule if the router supports one and remote functions are unnecessary then.
- Need protection against a metered-connection overrun? Use a documented hard allowance, but verify whether it covers the whole connection or one client and what disconnects at the threshold.
- Need no appliance-to-cloud traffic? Have the appliance forget the Wi-Fi network or remove its network access, accepting the loss of online features.
- Need less information retained by the manufacturer? Adjust the account and privacy settings separately; network limits alone do not accomplish that.
Maintenance checklist
- Recheck the appliance’s connected-feature settings after firmware or app updates.
- Review the router’s client list for unknown or duplicate appliance entries.
- Confirm that alerts and schedules still use the intended time zone and reset period.
- Install security updates for the router and appliance.
- Reassess whether a hard cutoff is worth the loss of remote functions before each billing cycle.
- Keep the appliance manual and network-reset instructions available in case reconnection is needed.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Official material confirms that smart-appliance features can require internet connectivity, that at least one manufacturer describes network disconnection as a way to stop transmission to its service, and that a documented 4G/5G Deco implementation can monitor allowances, issue alerts, and disconnect when a limit is reached. It does not establish a universal smart-appliance data rate, a universal per-appliance quota, or identical menus across router brands and regions.
Use the narrowest control that meets your goal: app settings for optional functions, router reporting for measurement, schedules or warnings for controlled reduction, and complete disconnection only when losing cloud features is acceptable.
