The fastest dependable progression in Phasmophobia is not a single exploit or “best map.” It is a repeatable contract loop: identify the ghost correctly, finish quick optional objectives, collect the bone, record new Chronicle media, and leave alive. Because the game ties experience to money—Kinetic Games states that earning $100 also earns 100 XP—every profitable investigation advances your level at the same time. Raise the difficulty multiplier only when your accuracy and survival rate are high enough to finish contracts consistently.
How Phasmophobia progression works
Phasmophobia pays you through several parts of an investigation rather than one end-of-contract bonus. Correct ghost identification, completed objectives, the bone, and Chronicle media all contribute to your payout. The game’s progression preview says reward values for objectives and tasks were increased, while level requirements become much steeper as you approach level 100.

The most important rule is the link between cash and XP: Kinetic Games wrote in Moving Forwards | Development Preview #12 on July 26, 2023, “Experience and money values are now tied, if you earn $100, you’ll also be earning 100xp.” There is therefore no separate XP-only farming method to master. Improve your money per successful contract and you improve your XP per contract by the same amount.
- Ghost identification: Correctly naming the ghost is a direct reward source.
- Optional objectives: Each completed objective adds to the investigation payout.
- Bone: Finding and collecting the bone gives an additional reward. The 2023 progression notes moved the bone reward outside the contract reward multiplier.
- Chronicle media: Photos, videos and sounds can add money and XP. New subjects are marked Unique; repeated captures are Duplicates and pay less.
- Survival: You keep the value of a completed contract only if you leave alive. A death, incorrect guess or long failed reset can erase the advantage of a high multiplier.
Think in terms of reward per minute of successful play, not the largest number shown beside a difficulty. A higher multiplier is useful only when it does not create enough deaths, wrong guesses or abandoned runs to slow your overall progress.

The fastest repeatable contract loop
Use this sequence on every investigation, adapting it to your equipment, map knowledge and sanity situation.
- Prepare a compact loadout. Bring the evidence tools you can use confidently, a Photo Camera, a Video Camera and—once unlocked—a Sound Recorder. Add a survival or sanity-management item when the difficulty and ghost behavior justify it.
- Locate the investigation area efficiently. Use audio, temperature changes, interactions and your preferred starting tools rather than wandering through every room. The objective is to identify the ghost area quickly so the rest of the contract happens there.
- Confirm the ghost. Prioritize evidence and recognizable behavior. A correct identification is worth more than gambling on an uncertain guess to save a few minutes.
- Complete low-risk objectives while you work. Choose objectives that fit the equipment already in the room or can be done quickly. Do not spend an extended period waiting for a dangerous event when a clean contract completion would produce better progress per hour.
- Collect the bone. Make a deliberate sweep for it before leaving. Its reward is valuable and, according to the 2023 progression notes, is not reduced by the contract reward multiplier.
- Capture new Chronicle entries. Take media of subjects that are not already recorded as Unique in your journal. Avoid filling limited slots with repeats unless a duplicate is the only safe capture available.
- Reassess risk before the final objective. If sanity is low, a hunt is likely, or the remaining objective is slow and dangerous, bank the rewards you already earned by leaving alive.
- Exit and review the journal. Check which media types remain Unique so the next contract can target them instead of producing low-value duplicates.
This loop works at every level because it combines the game’s direct reward sources and avoids treating a risky, high-multiplier attempt as automatically superior.
Chronicle media: the extra payout many players miss
Chronicle changed the value of carrying recording equipment. During one investigation you can record up to five photos, five videos and three sounds. The first capture of a particular subject or media type is Unique. Capturing the same piece of media again gives it a Duplicate mark and pays less money and experience, as described by Kinetic Games in Chronicle – Phasmophobia v0.13 on June 24, 2025.
Use the right devices
- Carry the Photo Camera for still images.
- Carry the Video Camera for video entries.
- Carry the Sound Recorder after it is unlocked so you can fill the sound category as well.
Chronicle also adds a per-item equipment bonus: a Tier 2 camera or recorder adds $1 for that media item, while a Tier 3 device adds $2. These are bonuses per captured item, not a blanket payout for owning upgraded equipment. Use the higher tier when it is practical, but do not delay a safe contract merely to force a device upgrade.
Plan for Unique entries, not random snapshots
Before entering, check the media pages in your journal. Choose subjects you have not already captured, then take the shot, recording or sound when the opportunity is safe. A room full of repeated interactions can consume slots while producing lower rewards. The best Chronicle run combines a few deliberate Unique entries with the bone, objectives and correct identification.
Perfect investigations
Kinetic Games’ 2024 development preview says that filling the media pages with all Unique items is part of the new perfect-investigation requirement, alongside the usual requirements. If you are pursuing a perfect result, treat media planning as a contract objective from the beginning rather than an optional photo stop at the end. For ordinary leveling, however, do not risk a death just to complete a difficult media page; a surviving, accurate contract is the better long-term investment.
Choosing difficulty for money per hour

There is no official permanent “fastest farm” map or custom configuration. The best setting is the highest one at which you can still finish accurate investigations with a strong survival rate. For one player that may be Professional; for another it may be Intermediate while learning a new ghost set or map.

When to move up from Amateur or Intermediate
Increase the multiplier when you can identify common ghosts without repeatedly exhausting every clue, complete at least one or two low-risk objectives, and leave before avoidable hunts. A difficulty increase that adds several minutes of searching or causes frequent deaths is a downgrade in practical progress, even if the displayed contract reward is larger.
When custom settings make sense
No-evidence and extreme custom farms are advanced options, not requirements for normal progression. They can produce a large multiplier for a skilled player who knows behavioral tells, but they also magnify the cost of a wrong guess. Start with modest changes, keep a survival item available, and change only one variable at a time so you know which setting caused a failure.
Early-level route: build skill and unlock tools
At early levels, use Amateur or Intermediate while learning evidence, room-finding and ghost behavior. Your priority is a clean, repeatable contract rather than a spectacular payout.
Early contract priorities
- Identify the ghost correctly before chasing optional rewards.
- Complete objectives that use equipment already in the room or require little extra travel.
- Collect the bone during your exit sweep.
- Take safe Unique photos, videos or sounds when the journal shows an available subject.
- Leave as soon as the remaining reward is not worth the hunt or sanity risk.
The game’s progression is built around unlocking equipment, maps and difficulties as your level rises. A short, accurate contract teaches the skills needed for later multipliers and provides dependable money for loadout expansion. Waiting through a difficult event objective is usually poor time management if the same minutes could be spent completing another safe contract.
Mid-game route: combine multiplier and completeness
Once Professional difficulty and stronger equipment are available, combine correct identification with the bone and several Unique media captures. Select a small or familiar location when that genuinely shortens navigation for you; official sources do not identify one universally fastest map.
A practical mid-game checklist
- Enter with your core evidence tools and recording devices.
- Find the ghost area before transporting the entire loadout.
- Use the same trip to gather evidence, complete compatible objectives and capture media.
- Search likely bone locations before the final exit.
- Keep a survival item available when the selected difficulty makes hunts likely.
- Stop when another objective would take longer than the expected value of starting a fresh contract.
The key decision is not “Can I technically complete this objective?” but “Will completing it produce more progress than leaving and starting the next contract?” That calculation changes with map size, sanity, hunt risk, equipment cost and how quickly you can reset.
Late-game and custom farming
Experienced players can raise the multiplier through harder difficulties or custom settings, but there is no certified universal configuration. The sustainable choice depends on how reliably you can identify ghosts with fewer clues and survive the resulting hunts.

Use a risk budget
Before a contract, decide what you are willing to risk. A high-multiplier run may justify one additional objective if you have strong evidence and a safe route out. It does not justify repeatedly entering a hunt with no escape plan. If a failed run costs equipment, consumables and the time spent rebuilding, its headline multiplier is misleading.
Keep custom farms patch-aware
Custom farms are sensitive to balance changes and ghost behavior updates. Treat community configurations as skill-dependent examples, not permanent facts. Re-evaluate them whenever a patch changes evidence, hunt rules, objective rewards or equipment behavior.
Objectives, bone and media: how to prioritize rewards
When several rewards are available, use a simple priority order.
- Secure identification. An incorrect guess can invalidate the central reward of the contract.
- Take the bone. It is a separate reward and should be part of your standard exit sweep.
- Capture safe Unique media. Unique entries pay more than Duplicates and help toward perfect-investigation requirements.
- Finish quick, compatible objectives. Favor tasks that require little travel or waiting.
- Attempt slow or dangerous objectives only when the risk is justified.
This order is not a published reward table; it is a practical way to protect the high-confidence value of a contract before spending time on uncertain extras.
Common ways players slow their progression
Chasing the displayed multiplier
A high multiplier does not compensate for repeated deaths or wrong guesses. Compare completed contracts per hour, not the reward shown for an ideal run.

Duplicates still count as media, but they reward less money and XP. Check the journal first and reserve slots for subjects marked Unique whenever possible.
Ignoring the bone
The bone is easy to overlook when the ghost has already been identified. Add a deliberate bone search to your exit routine.

Waiting too long for one objective
An event that requires repeated setup or a dangerous interaction can be less profitable than leaving and starting another contract. Protect your time and survival chance.
Choosing a large map without a reason
Large locations can add travel and search time. Choose a smaller or familiar location when it suits your skill, but do not assume an official fastest map exists.

Extreme settings are less forgiving and can become obsolete after updates. Learn the ghost behavior and survival route before raising the multiplier.

Prestige is optional when you reach level 100. It resets your money, level and equipment, while retaining map and difficulty unlocks. It grants a new badge and title, and reaching Prestige 10 provides additional loadout slots.

Prestige is a long-term cosmetic and loadout decision, not a faster-money shortcut. Make the choice after considering your current bankroll, equipment needs and interest in the badge system.
A contract decision framework
Use these questions before committing to another objective or a harder difficulty:
- Do I have enough evidence or behavioral information to make a confident ghost call?
- Can I complete the next objective without a long wait or a dangerous hunt?
- Is the bone still uncollected?
- Which Chronicle subjects are Unique, and can I capture one safely now?
- Will the expected reward exceed the value of leaving alive and starting another contract?
- Do I have the equipment and escape plan required by this difficulty?
If the final two answers are unfavorable, leave. A dependable chain of accurate contracts is the core of fast leveling.

These figures describe the reward framework. They do not prove that one map, one ghost or one custom setting is permanently the fastest farm.
Recommended routine by player type
New player
Stay on Amateur or Intermediate, learn evidence and ghost behavior, complete the identification, take the bone and leave alive. Add Chronicle captures only when they are safe and clearly Unique.
Confident standard-difficulty player
Move to Professional when your correct-guess and survival rates remain strong. Combine objectives, bone and several Unique media entries in one trip, then stop before a risky final objective consumes the contract’s value.

Test higher multipliers or custom settings gradually. Track your actual successful-contract rate and time per run, and abandon a configuration that produces frequent deaths or wrong guesses.
Completionist
Plan Chronicle pages in advance and pursue Unique entries toward a perfect investigation. Treat the media journal as a checklist, while still protecting the survival and identification rewards that make each contract profitable.
Bottom line
For most players, the best money-and-XP method is a fast, accurate, survivable investigation: identify the ghost, take the bone, complete quick objectives, capture Unique Chronicle media with the best practical device tier, and leave. Increase the multiplier only when your real completion rate supports it. Prestige at level 100 only when its badge, title and eventual extra loadout slots matter more to you than keeping your current money and equipment.
