How to Let Visitors Download Specific Files From Your Server

The reliable pattern is simple: give each approved file a stable URL, map that URL to a known file, and return download-oriented HTTP headers. For example, /downloads/report.pdf can resolve to one file in a dedicated download directory. Use Content-Disposition: attachment when the browser should save the file instead of displaying it, set an accurate Content-Type, and add X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff.

For public files, a static Apache or NGINX location is fastest and easiest. For private or per-user files, keep the files outside the public document tree and send them through an authenticated application route that selects files from an allowlist. Never turn an unchecked query-string filename into a filesystem path.

How a browser decides whether to open or download a file

A visitor clicks an HTML link, but the browser’s behavior is determined primarily by the HTTP response. The server returns a status, a media type, and optional disposition metadata. A typical forced-download response looks like this:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: application/pdf
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="report.pdf"
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff

Content-Disposition: attachment tells the browser to treat the response as a file to save rather than content to render in the page. The filename parameter suggests the name shown in the save dialog. Quote names containing spaces or punctuation. The server’s filename parameter can take precedence over an HTML link’s download value.

If you omit Content-Disposition, browsers commonly display PDFs, images, text, and some audio or video types inline. That can be desirable for a public document, but it is not the same as guaranteeing a download. For user-supplied HTML, SVG, or other active content, attachment disposition reduces the chance that a browser executes or renders the file in an unintended context.

The HTML link

Link to the exact public URL rather than to a directory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<a href="/downloads/report.pdf">Download the report (PDF)</a>

The HTML download attribute can influence same-origin links:

<a href="/downloads/report.pdf" download="report.pdf">Download the report</a>

It is only a hint. Cross-origin restrictions, browser rules, and the response’s Content-Disposition header can override it. Set the header on the server when the behavior matters.

Choose the right serving model

Approach Setup Access control Filename and MIME control Large-file efficiency Auditability Main exposure
Static public directory Lowest; place files below the document root and link to them Public to anyone who knows the URL Mostly determined by server configuration and file extension Excellent; the web server serves the file directly Web-server logs only Accidental publication or predictable URLs
Static directory with download headers Low; add a location or directory rule Still public unless another access layer is added Strong control over disposition and default media type Excellent Web-server logs only Header mistakes can cause rendering or incorrect file types
Application download route Moderate; write a route that authorizes and streams a file Per-account, purchase, expiry, or per-file decisions Explicitly selected by the application Good when streamed; avoid loading the whole file into memory Can record user, file, time, and result Path traversal, authorization, and inefficient streaming bugs
Web-server protection on a location Low to moderate; protect a whole site or path Shared credentials or server-level rules Server-controlled Excellent Authentication and web-server logs Too broad for per-user permissions

Use a static location for brochures, release archives, and other genuinely public assets. Use an application route when access depends on who is signed in, what they purchased, an expiration time, or ownership of a particular file. NGINX Basic Authentication can protect an entire site or selected locations and can be combined with IP or geographic restrictions, but application authorization is the better fit for individual account permissions.

Public downloads with a dedicated directory

1. Create a narrow public area

Put only files intended for unrestricted publication in a directory such as /srv/www/public/downloads/. Do not place configuration files, backups, source code, upload staging areas, or private customer documents there. Give files stable, descriptive names such as report.pdf or release-2.4.1.zip.

On a typical site whose document root is /srv/www/public, the URL /downloads/report.pdf maps to /srv/www/public/downloads/report.pdf. Apache maps URL paths beneath its DocumentRoot in this way. NGINX uses a root or alias directive to define the filesystem mapping.

2. Add the link

<p><a href="/downloads/report.pdf">Download the report</a></p>

Use an absolute path from the site root when the same link appears on multiple pages. Test the exact URL with an unauthenticated browser session if the file is meant to be public.

3. Verify the response

Inspect the response in browser developer tools or with a command-line request:

curl -I https://example.com/downloads/report.pdf

Expect 200 OK, an appropriate media type such as application/pdf, and, when forced saving is required, Content-Disposition: attachment. A missing file should return 404 Not Found, not a directory listing or a different page.

NGINX configuration

Map a download URL and return 404 for missing files

NGINX’s root directive appends the request URI to the configured filesystem root. Its try_files directive checks whether a file exists before continuing; ending the check with =404 prevents a missing download from falling through to an application homepage.

server {
    root /srv/www/public;

    location /downloads/ {
        try_files $uri =404;
    }
}

Reload NGINX using the service procedure for your operating system after validating the configuration. Keep the download directory free of executable server-side scripts; a public file area should contain data, not application code.

Force every response in a location to download

If a location contains only files that should be treated as generic downloads, NGINX documents default_type application/octet-stream for that purpose:

location /downloads/ {
    try_files $uri =404;
    default_type application/octet-stream;
    add_header Content-Disposition 'attachment';
    add_header X-Content-Type-Options 'nosniff';
}

This broad rule deliberately uses a generic binary type. It is suitable when the directory is a download-only area, but it removes useful type information for clients that need it. For a mixed directory, define accurate MIME mappings and apply attachment behavior only to the files or location that require it. If the server must suggest a different filename for each file, an application route or a carefully generated header is more appropriate than a single static header.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use alias when the URL and filesystem layout differ

With alias, the location prefix is replaced by the specified directory rather than appended to a root. The trailing slashes must be deliberate:

location /downloads/ {
    alias /srv/private/public-downloads/;
    try_files $uri =404;
}

Test an alias carefully; an incorrect prefix can expose the wrong directory or make every request fail. Keep private files outside any location that is reachable without an authorization check.

Apache configuration

Use a download directory below the document root

Apache serves files below its DocumentRoot directly. A directory-level rule can add attachment behavior to selected extensions when the headers module is enabled:

<FilesMatch ".(pdf|zip)$">
    ForceType application/octet-stream
    Header set Content-Disposition "attachment"
    Header set X-Content-Type-Options "nosniff"
</FilesMatch>

ForceType application/octet-stream treats matching files as generic binary data. If clients need the precise type, use accurate MIME mappings instead and keep the attachment header. The exact directive location depends on whether you control the virtual-host configuration or only an .htaccess file; ask the server administrator if mod_headers or override permissions are unavailable.

Avoid exposing home directories and unrelated paths

Do not solve downloads by enabling broad direct access to a user’s home directory. Create a specific document-root directory or an application endpoint that exposes only the intended files. This keeps deployment files, shell history, logs, and private data out of the URL space.

Secure downloads through PHP

An application endpoint is useful when a visitor must be authenticated, when each file has an owner, or when links expire. The endpoint should receive an opaque file ID, look up a server-side record, authorize the current user, and then stream a path chosen by the server.

Safe endpoint sequence

  1. Authenticate. Establish the signed-in user before opening any file.
  2. Authorize. Check that the user can download this record, including purchase, organization membership, expiration, or other business rules.
  3. Resolve an ID. Convert an ID such as 8421 into a database record containing a server-controlled relative path. Do not accept an arbitrary filename as the authority.
  4. Canonicalize and constrain the path. Resolve the base directory and candidate with realpath(), then reject a candidate that is outside the permitted directory. This blocks traversal sequences and symlink escapes.
  5. Check the file. Verify that it exists, is a regular file, and is readable. Return a generic 404 or 403 according to your disclosure policy without revealing unrelated filenames.
  6. Send headers and stream. Set the type, attachment name, length when known, and nosniff, then call readfile() or your framework’s streamed-response API.

Illustrative PHP endpoint

<?php
// Authentication and authorization checks happen before this point.
$records = [
    '8421' => [
        'path' => '/srv/app/private-files/report.pdf',
        'name' => 'report.pdf',
        'type' => 'application/pdf',
    ],
];

$id = $_GET['id'] ?? '';
if (!isset($records[$id])) {
    http_response_code(404);
    exit;
}

$base = realpath('/srv/app/private-files');
$file = realpath($records[$id]['path']);
if ($base === false || $file === false || !is_file($file)) {
    http_response_code(404);
    exit;
}

$prefix = rtrim($base, DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR) . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR;
if (strncmp($file, $prefix, strlen($prefix)) !== 0) {
    http_response_code(404);
    exit;
}

$name = basename($records[$id]['name']);
header('Content-Type: ' . $records[$id]['type']);
header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="' . addcslashes($name, "\"") . '"');
header('X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff');
header('Content-Length: ' . filesize($file));
readfile($file);
exit;

The example uses a fixed in-memory map to make the trust boundary visible. In production, the map would normally come from a database, but the stored path and download name must still be server-controlled. Validate the name used in the header; use a conservative ASCII fallback or the standards-compliant filename encoding supported by your framework for non-ASCII names. Do not allow carriage returns or line feeds in a filename, because those characters can create response-header injection.

PHP’s documented pattern sets Content-Type, sets Content-Disposition: attachment, and calls readfile(). For large files, disable accidental output before the headers, avoid building the entire file in a string, and prefer the web server or a framework streaming response where possible.

Protecting files that are not public

Keep private files outside the document tree

The strongest default is to store private files somewhere the web server cannot serve directly. The application becomes the only route that can open them. If a private file remains under a public tree, a guessed URL may bypass your application unless the server location is explicitly denied.

Choose the access layer

  • Whole location protection: server-level authentication is suitable for a small team or a shared protected archive.
  • Per-user authorization: use an application route when access depends on account ownership, role, purchase, organization, or expiry.
  • Short-lived links: sign a file ID and expiration time, then verify the signature before serving. Do not treat an obscure filename as authorization.
  • Network restrictions: IP or geographic rules can add a layer, but they do not replace user authorization where individual permissions matter.

Return the same generic not-found response for an unknown ID and a file the caller is not allowed to discover when revealing existence would create a privacy problem. Log authorization failures separately from successful transfers, but do not put passwords, access tokens, or sensitive paths in logs.

Security checklist before publishing a download

  • Use a dedicated directory containing only intended public files, or keep protected files outside the public document tree.
  • Allowlist file IDs and extensions. Never concatenate an unchecked query parameter into a filesystem path.
  • Canonicalize paths and verify that the result remains inside the permitted directory.
  • Set an accurate Content-Type. Use application/octet-stream for unknown or intentionally generic binary content.
  • Set Content-Disposition: attachment for user-provided HTML, SVG, and other content that should not execute or render inline.
  • Send X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, especially for user-provided files.
  • Sanitize the suggested filename and prevent header injection.
  • Disable directory listings unless they are an intentional feature.
  • Return 404 for missing files and 403 for an authenticated request that is recognized but not permitted; avoid leaking unrelated private filenames.
  • Confirm that upload permissions cannot write executable scripts into a directory served by the web server.
  • Test with names containing spaces, Unicode characters, quotes, and long extensions.
  • Check whether antivirus scanning, quotas, retention rules, and privacy requirements apply to uploaded or user-generated files.

Large files, caching, and interrupted transfers

For a large public archive, let NGINX or Apache serve the static file rather than routing every byte through application code. For a protected route, stream the response instead of reading the complete file into memory. Framework and server support for byte ranges, resumable downloads, cache validators, and throttling varies, so document the behavior of the stack you deploy.

Decide whether a file may be cached. Public, immutable releases can use long-lived caching when their URL changes whenever the content changes. Private responses should use an appropriate cache policy so a shared intermediary does not retain one user’s file for another user. If a file is replaced while a transfer is in progress, use atomic deployment: write the new file under a temporary name, verify it, then rename it into place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting common failures

The browser opens a PDF instead of saving it

Inspect the response and confirm that Content-Disposition is exactly attachment. Check for a reverse proxy or application middleware that removes or overwrites the header. The HTML download attribute alone is not a guarantee.

The link returns the homepage or a framework route

On NGINX, add try_files $uri =404 to the download location so a missing file does not fall through to a front-controller rewrite. On Apache, check rewrite exclusions and confirm that the file is below the active DocumentRoot.

The response downloads with the wrong type

Correct the MIME mapping or set the route’s Content-Type explicitly. Use application/octet-stream only when a generic binary type is intentional. Keep nosniff enabled so browsers do not reinterpret an ambiguous response.

Every request returns 403

Check filesystem ownership and directory traversal permissions for the web-server account, then inspect the server error log. For an application route, verify that authorization runs before the file check and that the canonical-path comparison includes the directory separator; a prefix-only comparison can incorrectly accept a sibling directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A protected file is still reachable by URL

Move it outside the public tree or deny the entire private location at the web-server layer. Test in a new browser session without application cookies and try both the expected URL and plausible alternate paths.

A practical deployment sequence

  1. Classify each file as public, shared-protected, or per-user private.
  2. Create a dedicated directory for public downloads and keep all other storage elsewhere.
  3. Choose stable URL names or opaque IDs; do not expose database paths.
  4. Configure Apache or NGINX to map the URL, return 404 for missing files, and set the required type and disposition headers.
  5. Add an exact anchor on the page and test it as a normal visitor.
  6. For protected files, implement authentication, authorization, canonical-path checks, safe filenames, and streaming before releasing the route.
  7. Use response inspection to verify status, type, disposition, cache policy, and nosniff.
  8. Test unauthorized IDs, traversal strings, missing files, unusual filenames, concurrent downloads, and interrupted large transfers.
  9. Review logs and storage permissions after deployment.

This sequence keeps the public case lightweight while ensuring that a download URL is never mistaken for an authorization mechanism.
