Use viewer input, not viewer access: let people vote, chat, or submit a tightly defined request, then keep the decision and the mouse and keyboard with you. In OBS, show the poll or its result with a Browser Source overlay. Viewers participate in the broadcast, while your computer, scenes, files, and stream controls remain private.
Define “interaction” before you choose a tool
A livestream can feel collaborative without exposing the machine that runs it. The safe boundary is simple: viewers send information, and the broadcaster (or a narrowly limited automation) decides whether and how to act on it.

- Viewer input: a vote, chat message, emoji response, or request from a short approved list.
- Host execution: you read the input, choose the result, and make the change on your computer.
- On-screen feedback: a poll, response list, or result appears in the broadcast through a platform widget or OBS Browser Source.
This is different from sharing a desktop through a remote-control session. Remote access can let a guest move the pointer or type on the host computer; it is not required for ordinary audience participation.

Start with the decision you want viewers to influence. The less authority the interaction needs, the easier it is to moderate and disable.

Compare options on five questions: what can viewers submit, who executes the action, whether a platform or organization account is required, what information appears publicly, and how quickly you can hide or disable the interaction.
Option 1: Run a native Twitch poll
Twitch’s poll feature lets viewers vote on choices created by the streamer. Twitch documents an optional poll overlay that can put the active poll on your channel’s stream. Its help page states: “The Poll overlay allows you to display the currently active Poll on your channel onto your stream.” See Twitch’s current poll instructions for the labels and availability shown in your account.
Twitch says polls are available through the Creator Dashboard to monetized streamers. Eligibility and interface labels can change, so check the current dashboard rather than assuming every account has the feature.

- Open your Twitch Creator Dashboard and locate the poll feature in the dashboard’s stream-management or quick-action area.
- Write a question with choices that are mutually understandable. Keep the options narrow enough that the result gives you a usable next step.
- Set the voting duration and any available voting rules shown by Twitch.
- Start the poll, then tell viewers what the result will control and what you will do if the vote is tied, unclear, or abused.
- If you want the poll itself visible in the video, add Twitch’s poll overlay as a browser-based source in your broadcast scene, following the overlay instructions in Twitch’s help page.
- End the poll when the decision is made. Make the screen change yourself and narrate the result so viewers can distinguish a vote from direct control.
When a poll is the wrong fit
Do not force an open-ended question into a two-choice vote. Use chat when you need explanations, examples, or follow-up questions. A poll records a bounded preference; it does not authorize viewers to operate OBS, open applications, or edit files.

Option 2: Use chat as a feedback channel
Chat is the most flexible input because viewers can ask questions or suggest actions in their own words. It is also the least structured. Set expectations before the stream: explain which messages you will consider, whether repeated messages are ignored, and whether a moderator will filter them.
A practical chat workflow
- Announce a format such as “Type
AorBfor the next choice” or “Ask questions beginning with?.” - Read messages through the platform chat panel or a moderation tool that does not have permission to control your broadcast.
- Group similar suggestions instead of treating every repeated message as a new vote.
- Choose the action yourself, then perform it on the host machine.
- Show the decision or a short summary in the scene so viewers know their input was received.
Chat messages should not be treated as commands. A message that says “open this file,” “run this program,” or “give me control” is still only a suggestion. Do not turn chat text into shell commands, keyboard macros, or unrestricted URLs.
Show the interaction in OBS with a Browser Source
OBS describes Browser Source as a webpage embedded in a scene. That makes it useful for displaying a poll, alert, queue, or result without exposing your desktop. Read the OBS Browser Source documentation for the current source settings.

Add a web overlay
- Open the scene in OBS where the interaction should appear.
- In the Sources panel, choose Browser or Browser Source, then create a new source.
- Enter the overlay URL supplied by the platform or overlay service. StreamElements documents the general process of creating an overlay and copying its URL into an OBS Browser Source in its overlays and alerts guide.
- Set the source dimensions to the part of the canvas where the widget should appear. Position it above or below your game, application, or camera source as appropriate.
- Save the scene and preview it locally. Hide or show the source with the eye control when the interaction is not active.
- Keep the overlay URL private if it contains an unguessable token or identifies your account. Do not paste it into public chat.
Overlay providers differ. Some only render alerts; others render a live poll or queue. Confirm that the page actually displays the interaction you selected before treating it as a voting system.
Review OBS page permissions before connecting anything
The OBS browser component has permission settings that can allow a page to read OBS status and, at more powerful levels, access controls. The obs-browser documentation describes these capabilities. A page that only needs to display a result should not receive control authority.
Use least privilege
- Prefer a page with no OBS control access when it only needs to render HTML, images, or a poll result.
- If status is required, grant only the read-only or status permission exposed by your current OBS version.
- Do not give an audience-facing widget permission to switch scenes, start or stop streaming, change sources, or alter settings unless you have a specific, tightly controlled reason.
- Keep control-capable pages in a separate, private scene or profile. Do not reuse an administrative page as a public overlay.
- Remove or revoke permissions when the experiment ends, and regenerate overlay credentials if a private URL was exposed.
Permission names and available levels can change between OBS builds. Open the current Browser Source or browser-plugin permission settings and verify what each level permits before enabling it.
Keep execution with the broadcaster
The safest participation loop is “input, decision, action, confirmation.” Viewers submit a bounded input; you decide; you change the screen; the stream shows the result.

- Describe the decision: say exactly what the vote or request will affect.
- Collect input: use a poll, chat convention, or approved request form.
- Close or sample the input: stop accepting entries at a stated time so the target can be decided.
- Validate it: ignore spam, unsafe requests, and anything outside the announced choices.
- Act locally: use your own mouse and keyboard, or a local shortcut you control.
- Confirm on stream: explain which option won and show the resulting screen state.
If you automate any part of this loop, make the automation narrow and preapproved. For example, an automation may toggle one known scene or display one fixed message, but it should not accept arbitrary viewer text as a command, open arbitrary programs, or expose an API key in a browser page.

View-only streaming can still support interaction. Google Meet’s documented livestream mode says that viewers who join through the livestream link can view and send chat messages but cannot control streaming and recording. That feature is limited to eligible organizational Meet accounts and is not a universal rule for every livestream platform. See Google Meet’s host instructions for current eligibility and controls.
Remote collaboration tools use a different access model. Drovio warns that guests can type on the shared machine and advises revoking remote control when guests only need to watch. Its session access and control documentation explains the distinction.

For a public audience, a poll or moderated chat provides participation without exposing your desktop, open documents, browser sessions, or stream controls.
Test the boundary before going live
Run the complete workflow offline, in a private stream, or with a test account. The goal is not merely to see whether the widget appears; it is to prove what viewers can and cannot do.
- Input test: submit a valid vote, an invalid value, a duplicate message, and a long or hostile message.
- Display test: confirm that the intended poll, result, or queue appears in the correct scene and does not cover private windows.
- Control test: verify that a viewer cannot move your pointer, type into an application, switch scenes, stop the stream, or trigger an unapproved action.
- Moderation test: check how you hide, clear, slow, or close the interaction.
- Failure test: disable the overlay page or disconnect the input service and confirm that your stream can continue without it.
- Privacy test: inspect the video preview for browser tabs, account names, tokens, notifications, and other information outside the intended scene.
Keep a visible local control for emergency shutdown: hide the Browser Source, switch to a clean scene, stop the automation, or end the poll. Do not depend on the same public page that may be malfunctioning to disable itself.
Troubleshoot common failures
The poll or overlay is not visible
- Confirm the Browser Source is enabled in the active scene rather than a different scene collection.
- Check the source order; another full-screen source may be covering it.
- Reload the Browser Source and verify that its URL is current.
- Check whether the platform requires an eligible account before it creates or displays the poll.
- Use the platform’s own preview or dashboard to determine whether the problem is the poll itself or only its on-screen rendering.
Viewers can submit input, but nothing changes
That is expected for a host-executed workflow. A poll or chat message supplies a suggestion; it does not operate your computer. Read the result, make the change locally, and communicate the decision.

The overlay appears to have too much access
Remove the source, revoke its permissions, and review the page in a private OBS profile. Re-add it with the minimum status or display access needed. If a private overlay URL or credential was exposed, replace it through the service that issued it.
Chat becomes unmanageable
Replace open-ended prompts with a small set of allowed choices, appoint moderation, slow the interaction, or close submissions after a fixed period. A bounded poll is often easier to audit than trying to count free-form messages in real time.

Recommended default for most broadcasters
For a public stream, begin with a native poll when the decision is discrete, or moderated chat when it is not. Add a Browser Source only to display the interaction or its result. Leave OBS and the computer under your control, and grant a webpage no more permission than its display job requires. This arrangement gives viewers a visible role without turning audience participation into remote access.
