If the task depends on tabs already open in your normal Chrome profile—including its cookies, signed-in sessions or extensions—the documented route is the Codex Chrome extension, when it is available and permitted. If you do not need your personal Chrome state, use the browser built into the ChatGPT desktop app. That browser is isolated from your regular Chrome profile, but it can open and use several tabs during one task.
Choose the browser that matches your task
The phrase “access my Chrome tabs” can describe two different needs. You may want ChatGPT to inspect the tabs currently open in your everyday Chrome window, or you may simply want ChatGPT to browse several pages while it works. Those are not the same workflow.

Availability can vary by plan, device, rollout and workspace settings. If the work requires a site where you are already signed in, start with the Codex Chrome extension rather than assuming the desktop app or cloud browser can inherit your session.

Use the ChatGPT desktop app’s isolated browser
This is the simplest route when the pages are public or you are willing to sign in inside the app’s browser. It does not expose the tabs, history, saved passwords or cookies from your ordinary Chrome installation.

- Open a chat in Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Open the browser from the toolbar. On macOS, you can also press Command (⌘)+Shift+B; on Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+B.
- Navigate to the page you want ChatGPT to use, or ask ChatGPT to open the relevant page.
- Ask ChatGPT to use the current page and describe the specific action you want, such as extracting figures, checking a setting or comparing information across the tabs.
- When a permission prompt appears, inspect the website and the active account shown in the browser, then approve access only if the page is the one you intended.
During one task, ChatGPT can open and move between several tabs in this browser. It may also start a download; depending on the action, it can ask before saving a file. Keep the request narrow enough that you can tell which page and account are being used at each step.
Use your existing Chrome tabs, profile or sign-in
When the task depends on the tabs already open in your normal Chrome window, use the Codex Chrome extension. OpenAI distinguishes this extension workflow from the desktop app’s built-in browser: the extension operates alongside your existing Chrome profile, while the desktop browser uses its own state.
This is the appropriate route when ChatGPT needs context that exists only in your Chrome session, including:
- Pages that are already open in Chrome and would be inconvenient to reopen.
- Cookies or a signed-in session that the website uses to identify you.
- Chrome extensions that affect the page or provide part of the workflow.
- Profile-specific context that is not available in a fresh browser window.
The available documentation does not specify a separate installation sequence, an extension-store address or a universal tab-sharing switch. Do not rely on instructions that tell you to paste an unverified store link or enable a setting that is not present in your version. If the extension is missing, unavailable for your account or blocked by a workspace administrator, use the isolated browser for pages that do not require your personal session, or ask your administrator about the permitted Browser Use configuration.

After the extension is available, follow its own permission prompts and confirm the target tab before allowing access. The exact controls can differ with the extension’s rollout and your workspace policy, so the important check is not a particular button name: it is that the request identifies the Chrome page and account you intend to expose.
Why the cloud browser cannot see your Chrome tabs
The cloud browser runs on a separate computer. It does not attach to your laptop’s Chrome process and therefore cannot see your personal open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, extensions or existing sign-ins. A request such as “use the tab I have open in Chrome” will not provide that context to a cloud session.
You can still use the cloud browser for a task that starts from public pages or from information you deliberately provide in the task. For a private account, first determine whether the work can be completed in the desktop app’s browser with a fresh sign-in, or whether it truly depends on the existing Chrome profile. If it depends on the latter, the Codex Chrome extension is the documented option.

Understand the desktop browser’s site-tool limitation
Site tools are currently documented for supported pages in the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser, not for ordinary Chrome tabs. ChatGPT can work across tabs in the built-in browser, but a particular site tool is available only on the webpage that provides it. A tool available on one site does not automatically carry over to another tab or website.

For example, if a supported page exposes a site-specific action, perform that action while the browser is on that page. Moving to a different website may leave ChatGPT able to read the page but without that site’s tool. Treat a missing tool as a scope limitation rather than proof that the tab failed to load.
Fix the common “ChatGPT can’t see my tabs” problems
You opened the wrong browser
Check whether the task is running in the ChatGPT desktop app, your normal Chrome window or a cloud session. The desktop app’s browser and the cloud browser are separate from personal Chrome. If the requirement is an already open tab or an existing sign-in, switch to the Codex Chrome extension workflow when your account and workspace allow it.
The page is open, but the account is wrong
A page can load successfully while showing a signed-out state or a different account. Inspect the account indicator in the browser before approving access. If it is not the intended account, stop, close the page or sign out through the site’s normal controls, and reopen the correct account in the browser you selected.

A permission prompt was denied
Website access requires an approval decision. If you denied the prompt, ask ChatGPT to retry only after confirming the URL, page and account. Do not approve a broad request merely to make the task proceed; grant access to the page and action you actually need.

The extension or browser option is not present
Availability may depend on your plan, device, rollout or workspace policy. The absence of a control is not evidence that a hidden Chrome setting will fix it. Check whether you are using the supported desktop app, whether your organization restricts Browser Use, and whether the Codex workflow has been enabled for your account.
A site tool disappears after changing tabs
Site tools are page-specific. Return to the supported page and request the action there. If you need information from another website as well, have ChatGPT gather that information separately and keep the site-specific operation on the page that exposes the tool.
The cloud session starts without your saved context
This is expected behavior, not a synchronization failure. Cloud sessions do not inherit local history, cookies, passwords, extensions or sign-ins. Supply non-sensitive information needed for the task, or move the task to the extension or desktop browser that can legitimately provide the required context.

Website content should be treated as untrusted, even when it appears in a familiar tab. Review every access prompt, confirm the site and active account, and stop if ChatGPT opens the wrong page or account. Workspace administrators may restrict Browser Use, website access, file transfers, history access or saved approvals; those restrictions can prevent an otherwise correct workflow.
- Use the browser’s secure sign-in flow. OpenAI’s safety guidance is explicit:
Enter credentials only in the browser, never in the chat.
- Never paste passwords or security codes into the conversation. Type them into the site’s sign-in form in the browser instead.
- Inspect consequential actions. Before approving a purchase, message, upload, deletion or account change, verify the destination, account, data and final button.
- Keep the request specific. “Read the pricing table on this page” gives you a clearer approval boundary than “manage everything in my account.”
- Stop on unexpected navigation. If a page redirects to an unfamiliar domain, requests unrelated permissions or shows another person’s account, do not continue.
For sensitive work, you can use a separate browser profile or a session created specifically for the task, provided that doing so still satisfies the website’s security requirements. The key distinction is that a browser session should be deliberately shared through the supported workflow, not assumed to be visible simply because it is open on your computer.
Practical decisions for common requests
“Summarize the articles in my open tabs”
If those tabs are in your ordinary Chrome profile, the Codex Chrome extension is the relevant route. If the articles are public, an alternative is to open them in the desktop app’s browser and ask ChatGPT to work across those tabs.
“Use the account I am already signed in to”
That requirement points to the existing Chrome profile, so use the extension when available and permitted. The desktop app and cloud browser do not automatically inherit the sign-in. If you instead sign in inside the desktop app’s browser, enter the credentials there and verify the account before proceeding.
“Check a public page and download a report”
The desktop app’s built-in browser is generally suitable when no personal Chrome state is needed. Approve the website access prompt after checking the page, and expect ChatGPT to ask before saving a download in situations where confirmation is required.
“Run a site-specific action across two websites”
Keep each site’s operation on the page that supports it. ChatGPT can move between tabs in the built-in browser, but a site tool is not portable from one website to another.
A quick preflight checklist
- Identify whether you need existing Chrome tabs, cookies, a signed-in session or extensions.
- Choose the Codex Chrome extension for that existing-profile requirement; choose the desktop app browser when isolated state is acceptable.
- Do not expect a cloud browser to expose local Chrome data.
- Confirm your plan, device and workspace permit the browser workflow you selected.
- Inspect the page, domain and active account before granting website access.
- Enter passwords, security codes and payment details only in the browser.
- Review downloads and other consequential actions before approving them.
What to expect when the connection is working
In the extension workflow, ChatGPT can use the Chrome context that you intentionally make available through the supported integration. In the desktop app, the browser remains a separate environment, but ChatGPT can navigate several tabs there during the same task. In the cloud browser, the task remains isolated on a remote computer and starts without your local browser data.
Those boundaries explain most apparent failures. “The tab is open on my computer” is not by itself a permission grant or a browser connection. The correct result depends on selecting the environment that contains the required state, accepting only the relevant website prompt and checking the account before any sensitive action.
