I turned on the setting on launch day, but waited until the next afternoon before connecting an agent: I wanted time to consider the security implications of giving software access to an active browser.
What Safari MCP lets an agent do
WebKit announced Safari’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server on July 1, 2026. It connects an MCP-compatible agent to a Safari window so the agent can inspect how a site behaves in the browser—not just read source code. WebKit’s announcement describes access to rendered page content, screenshots, network requests, and console output.

WebKit lists 16 tools for working with tabs and pages, including navigation, page-state inspection, JavaScript evaluation, DOM interaction, console and network review, screenshots, viewport sizing, emulated media, and browser dialogs. That gives an agent ways to reproduce and investigate browser-specific issues; it does not make its diagnosis automatically correct.
Examples of browser-debugging work
- Inspect a layout or rendering problem that appears in Safari.
- Compare browser compatibility and examine navigation or resource timing.
- Check common accessibility issues or verify a page or form’s state.
These are supported use cases, not guarantees that an agent will spot every defect or interpret what it sees accurately. Treat its findings as a debugging aid and verify important conclusions in Safari yourself.

Set up Safari 27 with Codex
The following steps and setting labels match WebKit’s July 1, 2026 announcement for Safari 27. If your Safari version or interface differs, check the current release notes rather than assuming the labels or executable path are unchanged.
- Install Safari 27.
- Enable web developer features: In Safari, open Settings > Advanced and turn on Show features for web developers.
- Allow agent access: Open Settings > Developer and turn on Allow remote automation and external agents.
- Register Safari MCP with Codex: In Terminal, run
codex mcp add safari-mcp -- "/usr/bin/safaridriver" --mcp.
After registration, the MCP-compatible client can use the Safari server when connected. The setting gives external agents browser access; it is not just a general developer-tools preference.

Using Claude Code or another MCP client
For Claude Code, WebKit gives the corresponding command as claude mcp add safari-mcp -- "/usr/bin/safaridriver" --mcp. Other MCP-compatible clients can use the same executable and argument in their MCP configuration: command /usr/bin/safaridriver, argument --mcp.

What happens to page data—and what does not
WebKit says the Safari MCP server runs entirely on the local machine and makes no network calls of its own. It also says the server does not access personal Safari information such as AutoFill or other browser activity. When it captures page content, screenshots, or console logs, that information goes to the connected agent, not Apple. WebKit’s announcement notes that what happens to the data after that depends on the agent and model.
That distinction matters: the server making no network calls does not establish that the connected agent or model makes none. WebKit advises using only agents you trust. Before connecting one, consider which page you will open and what information it displays, and review the agent provider’s data-handling practices.

Why I waited a day—and what changed my mind
I enabled the setting on launch day, then waited until the next afternoon before connecting an agent. The reason was a same-week Plugin4Shell report affecting four AI coding agents. That was my motivation for pausing, not a claim that Safari MCP was implicated: I did not independently establish the incident’s technical cause, affected products, or remediation status. My account of the delay describes the decision as personal caution rather than a verified finding about this Safari feature.

After trying the workflow, I noticed another risk: I could accept an agent’s interpretation of a rendering bug too quickly and skip inspecting the page myself. That is one person’s experience, not a measured result, but it is a useful habit to guard against. Let the agent gather evidence and suggest causes; check the rendered page, console, and relevant requests before deciding that its explanation is right.

How to revoke the access
Turning off Allow remote automation and external agents in Safari > Settings > Developer disables the feature, according to my account. Re-enable it only when you want an external agent to work with Safari again.
