How to Leave the ColorOS Beta and Return to a Stable OnePlus Build

Do not start a ColorOS beta rollback until you have a verified backup and an official rollback package for your exact OnePlus model, sales region, and installed build. OnePlus rollback packages are not universal, and the process normally erases the phone. The current OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 announcement is India-only, excludes carrier-locked variants such as T-Mobile and Verizon models, and lists no published rollback file. If the matching file has not been published, stop rather than trying a package from another phone or region.

What you need to confirm before rolling back

Leaving a ColorOS beta is a device-specific recovery operation, not a single download that works across the OnePlus range. Before touching the system software, write down the details below. They determine whether an official rollback path exists and which file and installation method OnePlus authorizes.

Check Record Why it matters
Phone model Exact model number and commercial name A OnePlus 13 package is not evidence of compatibility with a OnePlus 15R, Nord model, or any other device.
Sales region India, Europe, global, North America, or the region shown for your handset OnePlus publishes different files and procedures for different regions.
Installed software ColorOS version, build number, and whether the phone is in an open beta or closed beta The rollback target and eligibility are tied to the branch you installed.
Target stable branch The stable version named in the model-specific announcement The official package may return you to a particular public release rather than any version you choose.
Carrier status Unlocked or carrier-locked, including the carrier name The OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 India beta notice says carrier-locked T-Mobile and Verizon variants are not compatible with those beta builds.

Find these values in Settings > About device. The exact wording can vary by software version, so use the labels shown on your phone and the labels in the official announcement for your model.

Understand the wipe and prepare a backup

OnePlus explicitly warns that its ColorOS 17 rollback procedures erase the contents of the device. The OnePlus 13 announcement states: “This process will erase all data and contents from your device. You must back up all important data before proceeding.” The OnePlus 15R beta notice carries the same practical warning.

A backup is useful only if you can actually retrieve what you need. Before proceeding:

  • Copy photos, videos, documents, downloads, recordings, and other files you cannot replace to a computer or another storage location.
  • Check that the copied files open from the second location. If you use a USB-C flash drive, verify that your phone supports the drive and that the files are present before starting; it is an optional extra copy, not a substitute for checking the backup.
  • Confirm that contacts, calendars, messages, and app data have completed their normal cloud or computer backup process.
  • Export data from authenticator, banking, password-manager, messaging, or other apps that require a separate transfer. A system wipe can remove local keys even when the app itself can be reinstalled.
  • Make sure you know the Google account, screen-lock credential, and app sign-ins needed after setup.
  • Charge the phone adequately and keep it connected to reliable power during the installation. Do not interrupt an upgrade that is still processing.

Do not treat a screenshot of a backup setting as proof that the files are safe. Open the destination and check the important folders before you approve the rollback.

Make the backup easy to audit

Use a short checklist rather than relying on memory. Note the date of the latest photo and document copies, confirm that your contacts are visible from the account or computer where they were saved, and make sure any two-factor authentication transfer has been completed. Keep the backup location available until the phone has finished setup and you have tested the stable build. The rollback is a full reset, so a file that remains only in internal storage will not survive it.

Find the official package for your exact phone

Start with the OnePlus Community announcement for the beta you installed. The post should identify the model, region, beta branch, rollback target, ZIP file, and installation instructions. Compare every one of those items with your phone before downloading anything.

Read the compatibility lines, not just the download heading

Check the eligibility paragraph, the regional label, and the target build as well as the file name. A post can discuss several variants while publishing a package for only one of them. Confirm that your phone was eligible for that beta in the first place, that your installed build is the one named in the notice, and that the target stable branch is the release you intend to install. Save the announcement link and the package name with your backup notes so you can identify the file later if support asks what was used.

OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 India open beta

The current announcement describes an India-only ColorOS 17 open beta for OnePlus 13. It says the rollback returns the phone to the most recent stable public OxygenOS 16 version. At the time covered by that notice, the rollback package entry states that no file has been published, so there is no published file to link or safely substitute. Recheck the official model-specific post for a package that OnePlus has actually released.

OnePlus 15R India closed beta

The OnePlus 15R notice applies to selected India closed-beta participants. It names a designated ZIP for the beta-to-public rollback and gives a Local Install sequence. Its eligibility and package are limited to that model and program; do not use its file or instructions on a OnePlus 13 or another regional variant.

Why a package from another phone is unsafe

File names can look similar while containing different device partitions, regional settings, or target builds. A package for a different model or branch can fail validation, leave the phone unable to boot, or put you outside the supported recovery procedure. The documented evidence does not establish a universal ColorOS rollback ZIP, so “close enough” is not a valid compatibility test.

OnePlus 13: ColorOS 17 India open-beta rollback

Use these steps only when the official OnePlus 13 India announcement has published the designated rollback ZIP and your phone matches its model, region, and beta build. The menu names below reproduce the procedure in that announcement; a later software version may display slightly different labels.

  1. Obtain the designated ZIP from the official post. Do not begin while the post still lacks a published rollback file, and do not use a third-party mirror or a file intended for another variant.
  2. Copy the ZIP to internal storage. Place it where the phone’s Local Install picker can browse it. Do not unzip or rename it unless the official instructions specifically say to do so.
  3. Enable Developer Mode. Open Settings > About device > Version. Tap Build number seven times, then enter the lock-screen password when prompted.
  4. Open the local updater. Return to Settings > About device > Up to date. Open the top-right menu and choose Local install.
  5. Select the matching rollback ZIP. Check the displayed file against the model and region named in the announcement, then confirm only if it is the designated package.
  6. Let extraction and the system upgrade finish. Allow the progress to reach 100 percent. Do not remove power, delete the ZIP, press buttons to force a restart, or attempt another update while this process is running.
  7. Restart when prompted. Choose Restart after the installer completes. The first boot after a system change can take longer than usual; wait for the phone to finish before deciding that it has failed.

The rollback performs a full data erase. After the restart, complete the initial setup and restore only after you have confirmed that the phone has reached the stable branch named in the announcement.

What the seven-tap step does

Developer Mode is required here so the Local Install entry can be used. Tapping Build number seven times is the documented trigger; it is not a signal to unlock the bootloader or to use a custom recovery. Stay within the menus and actions listed by OnePlus. Do not add bootloader-unlock, root, or third-party flashing steps to this procedure.

OnePlus 15R: what the closed-beta notice documents

The OnePlus 15R India announcement documents the same broad Local Install pattern for selected closed-beta participants, but its package and eligibility remain model-specific. If you are an eligible participant and the post supplies your designated ZIP, follow its sequence:

  1. Copy the designated rollback ZIP to the phone’s storage.
  2. Open the device-information screen and tap Build number seven times to enable Developer Mode, entering the lock-screen password if requested.
  3. Go to About device > Up to date, open the top-right menu, and select Local Install.
  4. Choose the package named for the OnePlus 15R beta-to-public rollback.
  5. Allow the upgrade to complete, then restart the phone.

Back up first: the notice says the rollback erases all data. Nothing in this announcement grants permission to transplant the package to another OnePlus model, region, or beta program.

Region can change the installation method

OnePlus’s separate OxygenOS 16 stable-rollout rollback post demonstrates why the region field in your notes matters. That post gives one Local Install procedure for IN, EU, and GLO variants, while its North American procedure uses a helper APK. It also warns of a full data wipe.

Example in OnePlus documentation Procedure described How to interpret it
OxygenOS 16, IN/EU/GLO variants Local Install procedure Shows that OnePlus can group some regions under one method.
OxygenOS 16, North America Procedure involving a helper APK Shows that North American instructions can differ from other regions.
ColorOS beta rollback on an unspecified model Not established Do not infer a method or package from the OxygenOS 16 example.

This regional example is contextual evidence, not a ColorOS file or a universal recipe. A North American owner should not install an IN/EU/GLO rollback ZIP, and an IN/EU/GLO owner should not assume the North American helper-APK path applies.

Region is more than the language selected on the phone. Use the market or variant identified by OnePlus for the handset and the announcement. If the phone was imported, compare its model and regional designation with the post instead of assuming that your current location determines compatibility.

If the package is missing, incompatible, or Local Install is unavailable

The official post has no published file

Stop. For the current OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 announcement, no published file means the rollback file has not been published in that notice. Keep the beta installed, maintain your backup, and check the official model-specific announcement for a later package. The available instructions do not establish a safe workaround for an absent file.

You found a ZIP on a forum or download site

Do not flash it merely because the filename contains your product family. Verify the exact model number, region, beta build, and rollback target against the official post. If any field differs or cannot be verified, discard the file and contact OnePlus through the support or community instructions for your device.

Local Install does not appear

First confirm that you are following the procedure for your model and region and that Developer Mode was enabled through the stated Build number path. If the option is still absent, do not substitute another updater, helper APK, or recovery file based on a different regional guide. The documented material does not provide a universal fix; use the official model-specific support instructions instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone rejects the package

A rejection is a reason to stop, not to force the installation. Recheck the model number, region, current build, target branch, and whether the ZIP is the designated file. A package rejection can indicate a mismatch that needs an official replacement, not a renamed file.

The phone does not boot normally after restart

Do not immediately repeat the process with another ZIP. Keep the phone connected to power, allow the first startup to finish, and then use OnePlus’s official recovery or support guidance for the exact model and region. The evidence available here does not establish an additional emergency sequence.

You cannot confirm the current build

Do not guess from the beta name alone. Return to the About device screen, record the complete build information, and compare it with the eligibility and rollback lines in the official announcement. If the phone’s screen or software state prevents that comparison, contact OnePlus support rather than selecting a package by product family.

What stable-build return means in OnePlus policy

OnePlus’s ColorOS 17 policy notice says eligible existing devices may voluntarily update after official release and that a user who moves to ColorOS can roll back to OxygenOS. It also qualifies the available rollback version as subject to future official announcements. That policy is not a package list: it does not identify a file for an unspecified phone, region, or build.

For practical purposes, “return to stable” means returning to the stable branch named by the applicable announcement, not choosing any older OxygenOS release. The OnePlus 13 notice identifies the most recent stable public OxygenOS 16 version as its target. A different model or later announcement may name a different target, so read that target literally before accepting the wipe.

The beta channel and the stable channel are separate decisions. Leaving a beta does not promise that every setting, feature, or version number will match the software that was on the phone before enrollment. The official target is the controlling reference; do not downgrade again simply because the resulting build is not the version you expected.

Post-rollback checks

After setup completes, verify the result before restoring everything:

  • Open Settings > About device and record the displayed operating-system version and build number.
  • Confirm that the version matches the stable target in the official rollback announcement.
  • Test mobile network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, calls, messages, and any work or security profiles you rely on.
  • Sign in to your accounts and restore data from the backup you checked before the wipe.
  • Install updates only through the normal system updater unless OnePlus publishes a new model-specific instruction.

If the device shows a different branch, an error, or missing hardware functions, stop adding data and contact OnePlus support with the exact model, region, previous beta build, rollback package name, and message shown on screen.

Keep the package name and the announcement link with your support notes. Those details let a support agent distinguish a model mismatch from a normal first-boot delay and help prevent a second, unnecessary wipe.

Decision checklist

  • Have you recorded the exact model number, sales region, current ColorOS build, and target stable branch?
  • Does an official OnePlus announcement name a rollback package for that exact combination?
  • Is the file published rather than absent, and did you obtain it from the official source?
  • Have you opened the backup destination and confirmed that irreplaceable files are readable?
  • Are you prepared for a complete data wipe and fresh setup?
  • Does the documented installation method match your region instead of another variant?

If any answer is no, do not begin the rollback. The safest action is to remain on the beta until OnePlus publishes the matching instructions or to use the official support path for your exact device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will leaving the ColorOS beta keep my data?

No. The OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 and OnePlus 15R rollback notices warn that the process erases all data and contents. Make and verify a backup before starting.

Can I use a OnePlus 13 rollback ZIP on a OnePlus 15R?

No. Packages are model-, region-, and build-specific. Use only the designated file in the official announcement for your exact phone and beta branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the OnePlus 13 rollback file is not published?

Do not start and do not use a mirror or another model’s file. Keep the beta installed, maintain your backup, and wait for OnePlus to publish the matching package or provide model-specific support instructions.

Does the rollback target any OxygenOS version I choose?

No. The announcement names the target branch. For the OnePlus 13 India notice, the target is the most recent stable public OxygenOS 16 version; another model or later notice may specify something else.

Why is Local Install missing from my phone?

Confirm that your model, region, beta build, and Developer Mode steps match the official notice. If Local Install remains unavailable, do not borrow a helper APK or recovery method from another region; contact OnePlus through the exact model’s support guidance.

Are North American and India rollback instructions interchangeable?

No. OnePlus documentation shows regional differences: an OxygenOS 16 example uses Local Install for IN/EU/GLO and a helper APK for North America. That example does not authorize using either method for an unspecified ColorOS beta.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I prove my backup is usable?

Open the backup destination before the wipe and test important photos, documents, and other irreplaceable files. Also confirm cloud or computer transfers for contacts, messages, and app-specific data.

What if the phone takes a long time to boot after the rollback?

Keep it connected to reliable power and allow the first startup to finish. Do not immediately flash another ZIP. If it still fails, use OnePlus recovery or support instructions for the exact model and region.

The Bottom Line

Back up and verify first, then use only the official rollback package and procedure for your exact OnePlus model, region, and beta build. If the package is not published, Local Install is missing, or any compatibility detail is uncertain, stop and wait for OnePlus’s model-specific guidance instead of forcing a different file.
