Use the game to check whether a word is playable
A word’s appearance in a dictionary does not prove that Words With Friends accepts it. Zynga’s support page says Words With Friends Instant Games draws on British and American dictionaries for English words and definitions, and reports more than 173,000 acceptable English words. The page’s displayed update age was 1,697 days when accessed, so treat that count as a figure Zynga has documented—not a current, live inventory. Zynga Player Support explains the game’s dictionary sources.

The game’s word information can help explain an accepted play, but a learner’s dictionary is better suited to understanding how a word is used. Oxford says its Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, tenth edition, provides clear definitions, example sentences, pronunciation audio, vocabulary lists, and self-testing through My Word Lists. Those are features of Oxford’s language-learning resource, not proof that a word is accepted in Words With Friends. See Oxford’s description of the Advanced Learner’s Dictionary.
#1 Best Overall
- Words with Friends Classic Game by Hasbro
- The popular mobile game comes to life!
- Ultimate play pack!
- Great for family game night!
For each unfamiliar word, read the definition and at least one example. An example can show how the word fits into a sentence, which is often more useful for remembering it than a short definition alone. Listen to the pronunciation if you want to learn how to say it, too.
Build a short review routine after each game
- Choose a few words. After a game, note words you could not define or would not feel confident using. A small list is easier to revisit than a long dump of playable words.
- Check the game’s entry. If the game provides a definition, use it as the game-specific reference for that word.
- Look up its meaning and use. Find the word in a learner’s dictionary, read an example sentence, and listen to its pronunciation if that helps you.
- Write a note in your own words. Add a concise meaning and, if useful, a related word or form. Keep the note brief enough to review quickly.
- Test recall later. Cover the definition, try to remember it, and then check the meaning and example again. Oxford describes personal word lists and self-testing; this routine is a practical way to use those features, not a measured guarantee of learning gains.
The Scrabble Association’s word-of-the-day page also suggests recalling related words as a way to reinforce vocabulary. That can be a useful prompt for review, but it does not determine Words With Friends playability.

Why Scrabble resources are not substitutes
Scrabble tools can help with Scrabble, but their verdicts and word lists should not be treated as the rules for Words With Friends.
| Resource | What it is for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Zynga Player Support | Describes the dictionary sources for Words With Friends Instant Games and reports the game’s documented English word count. | The old displayed update age means the reported count should not be presented as a verified current total. |
| Merriam-Webster Scrabble Word Finder | Checks playable Scrabble words, searches letter combinations, accepts up to two wildcard characters, and provides Scrabble study lists. | Whether a word is accepted in Words With Friends. |
| Collins Official SCRABBLE Words, seventh edition | A Scrabble word list endorsed for tournament and club play from January 1, 2025. Collins reports more than 280,000 permissible words, including inflected forms, for this list. | Definitions or the accepted vocabulary of Words With Friends. |
| Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary | Definitions, examples, audio, vocabulary lists, and self-testing for learners. | A game-specific ruling on whether a word can be played. |
The counts in this table describe separate products, not competing measurements of one shared word list. Collins’s figure is for its Scrabble list, not Words With Friends. Its seventh edition carries a 2024 copyright; the endorsement date refers to tournament and club Scrabble play.

What the app’s feature history can—and cannot—tell you
A 2014 TIME article described a searchable dictionary, definitions, rarity information, pronunciation, and a Word of the Day feature in the then-new app. That is historical reporting, not confirmation that every current version includes those tools. Check the instructions or menus in your installed version for what is available. Read TIME’s October 9, 2014, report on the app update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep vocabulary learning separate from word-game strategy
A playable word and a useful everyday word are not the same thing. Game word lists set boundaries for permitted plays; learner dictionaries explain meanings and show words in context. Use each resource for its purpose: the game for acceptance, and a learner’s dictionary for understanding and review.

That is Oxford’s usage-history figure, not evidence that playing Words With Friends improves vocabulary. The sources cited here do not establish a measured vocabulary gain from playing the game alone.
