Tell viewers whenever AI has created or materially changed content that could be mistaken for authentic footage, a real person’s words or actions, or a real event. Use the disclosure control supplied by the publishing platform, and make the notice clear and visible when people first encounter the content.

The exact threshold depends on the platform and jurisdiction. This guide explains YouTube’s current workflow and the European Union’s AI Act Article 50 obligations, which apply from 2 August 2026. Other platforms and countries may use different definitions, controls and deadlines.

Start with the authenticity test

Before publishing, ask a simple question: could a reasonable viewer mistake the AI-generated or AI-altered material for something that really happened, something a real person really said or did, or footage of a real place or event? If the answer is yes, treat disclosure as required unless the platform’s current policy clearly says otherwise.

This test is about the audience’s likely understanding, not about which software produced the file. A video can require a notice even when only one scene, voice track or person was synthetically changed. Conversely, using an AI tool somewhere in the production process does not automatically mean the finished work needs a synthetic-content label.

Realistic depictions are the clearest case

Disclose realistic fabricated events, realistic additions to an actual location, a person appearing to give advice they never gave, or a public figure appearing to take an action that did not happen. YouTube’s examples also include realistic scenes involving professional athletes and AI-generated music. The platform says its examples are illustrative, not an exhaustive list.

Material changes matter even when the source is real

Editing real footage can cross the disclosure line when AI changes the meaning of what happened. Adding a realistic crowd to an empty street, replacing a speaker’s words, or making a person appear to be in a different place can mislead viewers even though the original file was genuine.

Routine assistance is not automatically synthetic footage

YouTube distinguishes substantive, realistic changes from ordinary production help. Its examples that generally do not require the same disclosure include generating an outline or script, brainstorming ideas, creating captions, applying routine beauty or lighting filters, changing color, and repairing damaged audio. A minor edit that does not mislead viewers about what happened is treated differently from a photorealistic fabrication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those examples do not create a universal exemption. A filter that merely smooths skin is different from one that changes a person’s identity; audio cleanup is different from generating a new statement in someone’s voice. When the result could alter a viewer’s understanding, use the platform’s disclosure process and explain the change.

A decision framework before you publish

Question If the answer is yes If the answer is no
Does the output look or sound photorealistic? Check the platform’s AI-disclosure control and applicable law. Continue assessing whether the work could still mislead.
Could viewers think a real person said or did something they did not? Disclose the synthetic or altered material prominently. Assess the remaining scenes, narration and metadata.
Did AI materially change a real place, event, statement or action? Use a label even if much of the source footage is authentic. Routine assistance may fall outside the platform’s disclosure examples.
Is the publication aimed at people in the European Union? Check the provider/deployer duties in Article 50 and its exceptions. Follow the platform’s policy and the law where the audience is located.
Will an automatic label or metadata marker be added? Preview the viewer-facing result; automatic labeling does not replace your own review. Place an intelligible notice yourself at first exposure.

Keep the scope explicit in your publishing notes: identify the platform, the audience or jurisdiction, the type of AI change and where the notice will appear. There is no single label that satisfies every platform and country.

How to disclose AI content on YouTube

YouTube’s Help guidance requires creators to disclose AI used to meaningfully alter or generate photorealistic content. The control is part of the upload workflow in YouTube Studio.

Step 1: classify the finished work

Review the final cut, not just the individual assets. Look for realistic faces, voices, locations, events, music or actions that were generated or changed. Decide whether a viewer could reasonably believe those elements are authentic. Script help, captions, ordinary color work, beauty filters and audio repair are listed by YouTube as examples that generally do not require the same disclosure, provided they do not mislead.

Step 2: answer the AI-use question during upload

  1. Open YouTube Studio and start the video upload.
  2. Complete the normal title, description, audience and other details.
  3. Open the Attributes section and find the AI-use disclosure control.
  4. Select Yes when the video contains realistic, meaningfully altered or generated content covered by YouTube’s policy.
  5. Finish the upload and wait for processing before checking the public view.

Answering yes generates a viewer-facing label. The control is not a substitute for an intelligible explanation in the description when context would help viewers understand what was changed.

Step 3: verify where the label appears

YouTube’s 27 May 2026 update says labels for photorealistic and meaningfully AI-altered or generated long-form videos are moving to a more prominent position below the player. For Shorts, the label appears as an on-video overlay. Content that is unrealistic, animated or only slightly altered may continue to show a notice in the expanded description instead.

Check the video while signed out or in a separate viewing session, on both desktop and mobile when possible. A label visible only in Studio is not enough; confirm what an ordinary viewer encounters.

Step 4: review automatic labels

YouTube may add labels automatically to content made with its own AI tools, files carrying C2PA metadata, or material its systems identify as AI-generated or altered. The platform is also rolling out automatic detection for significant photorealistic AI use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In most cases, creators can correct an incorrect disclosure in Studio. YouTube identifies exceptions, including labels based on its own AI tools, C2PA metadata and some manual-review decisions. If the platform adds a label you cannot change, retain the project records and explain the context in the description rather than attempting to hide the notice.

Step 5: understand policy consequences

YouTube says disclosure by itself does not affect recommendations or monetization eligibility. Repeated failure to disclose can lead to a label being applied manually or to other enforcement, including removal of content or suspension from the YouTube Partner Programme. Treat the disclosure as a normal publishing step, not as an optional warning that can be omitted to protect reach.

YouTube examples: when to disclose and when ordinary assistance is different

Production choice Likely YouTube treatment Why the distinction matters
AI-generated realistic footage of a fabricated event Disclose Viewers could believe the event occurred.
AI-added realistic footage of an actual place Disclose The location is real, but the depicted activity is not.
A real person made to give advice they never gave Disclose The synthetic statement changes the person’s apparent words.
A public figure shown realistically doing something fictional Disclose The depiction could be mistaken for authentic conduct.
AI-generated music used as part of the video Disclose under YouTube’s listed examples The audio itself is generated content, even if the images are genuine.
AI-assisted outline, script or idea list Generally no disclosure under the stated examples The assistance does not itself create a realistic depiction.
Automatically generated captions Generally no disclosure under the stated examples Captions improve access without changing the event shown.
Routine beauty, color or lighting adjustment Generally no disclosure when it does not mislead Minor aesthetic treatment is different from fabricating an event or identity.
Audio repair that restores intelligibility Generally no disclosure when it does not create new meaning Repair is not the same as synthesizing a new statement.

When a project combines categories, disclose based on the most misleading element. For example, an authentic interview with AI-generated answers from the interviewee requires a notice even if the captions and color grade are routine.

What the EU AI Act Article 50 requires

For publications covered by the European Union’s AI Act, Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The rules separate duties for providers of AI systems from duties for deployers—the people or organizations using the output in a service, publication or campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provider duty: machine-readable marking

Providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, images, video or text must mark covered outputs in a machine-readable format that can be detected as artificially generated or manipulated. The legal text calls for technical solutions that are effective, interoperable, robust and reliable as far as technically feasible.

This is primarily a technical and supply-chain obligation. A provider may embed provenance or other detectable information in the output; a publisher should preserve that information instead of stripping metadata during export or transcoding.

Deployer duty: tell people about deepfakes

Deployers must disclose AI-generated or manipulated image, audio or video that constitutes a deepfake. The notice must be clear, distinguishable and accessible no later than the first interaction or exposure.

For evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional or analogous work, the disclosure is limited to identifying that generated or manipulated content exists, in a way that does not hamper the work’s display or enjoyment. The exception changes how the notice is presented; it does not turn the synthetic material into undisclosed authentic footage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Special rule for public-interest text

Article 50 also covers AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest. Disclosure is not required where the text has undergone human review or editorial control and a natural or legal person holds editorial responsibility, subject to the legal text’s scope and conditions.

That exception should not be treated as a blanket exemption for every article, post or press release assisted by AI. Document who reviewed the material, what editorial control was exercised and who accepts responsibility. If those facts are unclear, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice before publication.

Provider and deployer duties compared

Role Main obligation Practical action for a publisher
Provider of a generative AI system Mark covered synthetic outputs in a detectable, machine-readable way. Use supported provenance or marking features and preserve them through export.
Deployer publishing a deepfake Disclose the generated or manipulated image, audio or video. Place a clear notice at or before the first viewer exposure.
Deployer publishing public-interest AI text Disclose unless the applicable human-review and editorial-responsibility exception applies. Record the human review and responsible editor, or disclose the AI involvement.
Creator of artistic, satirical or fictional work Identify the existence of generated or manipulated content without undermining the work. Use a brief, visible statement appropriate to the format.

What the European Commission’s Code of Practice does—and does not do

The European Commission published its Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content on 10 June 2026. The Commission describes the code as voluntary guidance for implementing the transparency requirements. The underlying Article 50 duties are legal obligations; following the voluntary code is not a replacement for reading the regulation, its exceptions and applicable national guidance.

How to write a useful disclosure

A label should answer the viewer’s immediate question: what part of this work was generated or changed? “AI used” may be technically true but too vague when a person’s face, voice or statement has been fabricated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use specific, plain language

  • “This video includes AI-generated footage depicting a fictional event.”
  • “The speaker’s voice in this segment was synthetically generated; the speaker did not record these words.”
  • “AI was used to create the background location; the people and interview are real.”
  • “This fictional satire contains AI-manipulated images.”

These are editorial examples, not universal legal wording. Adapt the statement to the platform’s required control and the facts of the work. Do not imply that a real person endorsed a statement merely because the voice or likeness sounds authentic.

Put the notice where viewers encounter the claim

For video, place the notice in the platform’s disclosure field and, when useful, in on-screen text or the opening description. For an image, put it beside the image rather than several clicks away. For audio, identify the synthetic segment in the player description or spoken introduction when that is the first practical point of exposure.

Make the text readable on small screens, provide an equivalent for screen-reader users, and avoid low-contrast overlays. A technically present label that viewers cannot see or understand does not meet the goal of clear, distinguishable information.

A cross-platform publishing workflow

  1. Inventory the AI changes. Note generated faces, voices, scenes, music, text, translations, captions and edits that alter meaning.
  2. Apply the authenticity test. Mark any element that could be mistaken for a real person, event, place or statement.
  3. Check the platform policy. Find the current AI or synthetic-media control for the exact format—long-form video, Short, livestream, image, audio or text.
  4. Check jurisdiction. If the audience or publisher is in the EU, assess Article 50 provider and deployer duties from 2 August 2026. Check other local rules separately.
  5. Preserve provenance. Keep C2PA or other machine-readable markings when exporting, resizing or transcoding.
  6. Publish the disclosure. Use the built-in field first, then add a concise explanation where viewers need more context.
  7. Preview the public result. Confirm the label appears at first exposure on the devices and account states your audience uses.
  8. Keep records. Save the source files, AI-tool settings, human review notes, responsible editor and the policy version consulted.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Relying on a platform-agnostic “AI” badge

There is no universal label. A disclosure that satisfies one service may be too hidden, too late or too vague for another. Name the platform and audience in your workflow, then repeat the check whenever the interface changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a real source makes the result authentic

AI can materially alter genuine footage. If the final image, voice or event differs from what occurred, classify the finished result rather than the camera original.

Confusing metadata with viewer disclosure

Machine-readable marking helps platforms and systems detect synthetic content, but it may not be visible to a person watching or reading. Preserve the marking and provide the human-readable notice required by the platform or law.

Hiding the label in a long description

When the audience first sees a photorealistic fabrication in the player or feed, a notice buried below “show more” may arrive too late. Use the platform’s prominent control and verify its rendered placement.

Using an unexplained euphemism

Terms such as “enhanced,” “virtual” or “creative edit” can leave viewers unsure whether a real person or event was fabricated. State what was generated or manipulated in ordinary language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming disclosure harms distribution

YouTube states that disclosure alone does not affect recommendations or monetization eligibility. Omitting a required disclosure creates greater policy risk than making the status clear.

Treating the EU code as optional law

The Commission’s code is voluntary guidance, while Article 50’s transparency requirements are legal obligations. Use the code to organize compliance, but rely on the legal text and qualified advice for a specific case.

When the rule is uncertain

If the material sits near the boundary—such as a heavily stylized reenactment, a translated or cloned voice, or an AI-assisted news article—choose the more transparent option while checking the current platform policy and local law. A short, accurate notice rarely prevents viewers from enjoying clearly fictional work; an undisclosed realistic fabrication can permanently damage trust.

Keep the claim narrow. Say that a scene, voice, image or passage was generated or manipulated, rather than suggesting that the entire production is synthetic when it is not. Clear scope helps viewers distinguish authentic evidence from creative reconstruction without overstating what the technology did.
