Label an AI-generated cartoon with a short, accurate notice—such as “AI-generated cartoon”—where viewers see it immediately, beside the image or in the first visible caption line. Keep it legible without covering the artwork. This is practical editorial guidance, not a legally prescribed phrase; in the EU, the rules distinguish machine-readable marking from viewer-facing disclosure, and the latter applies to images that meet the Act’s definition of a deepfake.
Choose wording that accurately describes the AI’s role
Be specific about how the cartoon was made. If AI generated the cartoon substantially, “AI-generated cartoon” or “Made with AI” is clear. If a person drew or composed it and AI contributed only to part of the work, describe that narrower contribution—for example, “AI-assisted” or “Background generated with AI.” These are useful editorial examples, not official legal wording.

A label should not imply that a person drew the whole cartoon when that is not the case, or that AI generated the whole cartoon when it only affected one element. Accuracy is more useful to viewers than a vague “AI” tag.
Put the disclosure where viewers encounter the cartoon
Place the notice beside the image or in the first visible caption line. For a video, use an on-screen notice or opening caption if that is how people first encounter it. The Commission’s practical guidance says a disclosure must be clear and distinguishable, understandable, and perceivable without special tools or a separate action. A notice hidden behind a “more” break, or available only in file metadata, may not reach viewers at first exposure.

A platform’s AI-disclosure control can supplement a visible notice, but platform requirements vary and may change. Check the service’s current rules and upload settings for the specific account and format; a platform control should not be assumed to replace any disclosure required by law.
Keep the label findable without obscuring the art
Use a quiet but readable placement that does not cover faces, lettering, or another important detail. For evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous work, the EU AI Act says any required disclosure should be made in an appropriate manner that does not hamper the work’s display or enjoyment. That supports a discreet, easy-to-find credit or caption rather than a warning that dominates the cartoon.

What EU AI Act Article 50 requires—and what it does not
The Act distinguishes between providers of generative AI systems and deployers who use them. Providers must ensure covered AI-generated or manipulated outputs are marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as such, subject to the Act’s qualifications. Deployers must disclose image, audio, or video content that constitutes a deepfake. A machine-readable mark alone does not satisfy a deployer’s viewer-facing disclosure duty where that duty applies.

The Act’s deepfake category concerns content that resembles existing people, objects, places, entities, or events and falsely appears authentic or truthful. Whether a cartoon falls within that category depends on its content and context, including whether an audience could take it as authentic. A clearly fantastical cartoon will not necessarily meet that definition simply because AI made it. The Commission puts it plainly: “Not all AI-generated or manipulated content needs to be labelled.”
The Commission says Article 50 applies from 2 August 2026. It describes a limited grace period until 2 December 2026 for providers’ marking and detection duties for AI systems placed on the market before 2 August; it does not describe that period as postponing deployer disclosure duties. Content created before 2 August does not need retroactive labeling, though the Commission encourages labeling where possible. These are EU-level rules; they do not establish the law in other jurisdictions.

Use an optional EU icon as support, not as the whole message
The European Commission makes optional icons available for AI-generated-content disclosure. Its guidance distinguishes fully AI-generated content from content modified with AI. A short phrase beside the icon—such as “AI-generated cartoon” or, where accurate, “AI-modified”—can make its meaning explicit. Use an icon that matches the actual AI involvement.

The Commission reports qualitatively that user testing informed the icon design and that the basic icon performed better across the measures described when accompanied by text; the guidance page does not give a numeric effect size. An icon is optional and does not by itself establish compliance: the deployer remains responsible for any required disclosure. If the tool used to make the cartoon provides machine-readable provenance, retain it where appropriate, but do not treat hidden metadata as a substitute for a visible notice when one is required.
