Use an administrator account or the server console. Run /kick <playername> [reason] to disconnect someone without blocking a later return. Use /ban to prevent a player from joining, optionally for a supported period such as an hour, day, week, or year. Remove a restriction with /unban <playername>, and inspect active restrictions with /list banned.

A kick is a one-time disconnect. It ends the player’s current session, but the player can connect again as soon as the server permits it. A ban is a join restriction. The player remains unable to connect until the ban is removed or a supported timed ban reaches its expiry.

The policy decision belongs to the server owner. The command only applies the decision you make; it does not determine what behavior deserves a kick, a timed ban, or a permanent restriction.

Check permissions and command syntax first
Use an administrator account or the server console
In-game commands require administrator privileges. If your account cannot execute moderation commands, use the server’s console or have an administrator grant the appropriate permission. Administrator references commonly identify the controlserver privilege as the relevant server-control permission, but the exact privilege set can vary.
A hosted server normally exposes a console in its control panel. Open that console, select the running Vintage Story instance, and enter the same slash command shown in this guide. A local dedicated server has its own terminal or console window. Do not assume that being the world owner, an operator in another game, or a panel user automatically grants Vintage Story command access.

Ask the running server for help
The Vintage Story Wiki command page says it was last verified for version 1.15 and recommends the in-game command handbook because it is generally newer. The administrator reference likewise states that “the running server is the final authority.” Loaded mods can add, remove, or change commands.
Run these checks before issuing a copy-paste command:
/help banto see the ban syntax and whether timed arguments are accepted./help kickto confirm the kick form and optional arguments./help unbanto confirm how a restriction is removed./help privilegesto inspect the permission names available on your server.
If the help output differs from an example below, follow the live output. Do not add arguments simply because another Vintage Story version or a modded server uses them.
How to kick a player
1. Connect with sufficient privileges
Join the server with an administrator account, or switch to the server console. If the command is rejected for permission reasons, resolve access first rather than repeatedly changing the command.

2. Enter the kick command
Use the player’s exact server name:
/kick <playername> [reason]
The square-bracketed reason is optional. For example, a server using the documented syntax could accept:
/kick Alex/kick Alex Repeated chat spam
Use the name as the server identifies it. If a name contains spaces or unusual characters, consult the live help for the quoting or name format your version accepts instead of guessing.
3. Tell the player why, when appropriate
The current hosting guide says a supplied kick reason is displayed to the player. A short, factual message is more useful than an insult or an unexplained removal: identify the rule or immediate problem and, if your community has one, point to the appeal channel. Keep private evidence, staff notes, and identifying details out of a public reason.
4. Confirm the result
The kick should end that player’s connection. A kick is not a ban, so a player who is allowed to return can reconnect later. If the player immediately returns and the underlying behavior continues, move to your server’s escalation policy rather than treating repeated kicks as a substitute for a documented restriction.
How to ban a player
1. Decide whether the restriction should be timed
A ban is more severe than a kick because it blocks a future connection. Decide the duration before you run the command, and record the rule, evidence, moderator, and start time in your staff log. The command’s effect is mechanical; your moderation policy supplies consistency.
2. Check the syntax supported by this server
The basic form is:
/ban <playername>
The March 1, 2026 administrator procedure documents a timed form with a player name, a timespan, and an optional reason:

/ban Steve 1 year Uninvited
The capitalization in that documentation is not a guarantee that every build treats command names identically. Use the spelling and argument order shown by /help ban on the running server. Some servers may support only the basic form, while a mod can change or extend it.
3. Apply the ban
Enter the command from the administrator client or console. Check the name carefully before pressing Enter; a similarly named player can be affected if you mistype it. If a timed form is supported, include the unit exactly as the help output specifies: the documented units are hour, day, week, and year.
When you omit a duration, do not assume that every version interprets the omission the same way. Treat the result as an active restriction and verify it with /list banned. If you need a guaranteed expiry, use the timed syntax explicitly when the server’s help confirms it.
4. Communicate the decision
Explain the rule, duration, and appeal route through the channel your community normally uses. The documented timed syntax includes a reason field, but how a particular version displays that reason can differ. Keep the authoritative details in your staff record even when the player-facing message is brief.
How to inspect and unban someone
Review the active list
Run:
/list banned
Use the result to distinguish a spelling mistake from an absent restriction, and to see whether a timed entry is still present. The list is also useful during staff handoffs: it gives moderators a single view of restrictions applied by different operators.

Remove a restriction
When your policy calls for an early reversal, run:
/unban <playername>
Use the same player identifier that appears in the ban list. If the command reports no matching entry, first run /list banned; the ban may have expired, the name may differ, or a mod may use a different management command. Once the entry is removed, the player can attempt to connect again, subject to any other server or account restrictions.
Handle an expired timed ban
A timed restriction should stop blocking the player when its supported duration expires. If the player still cannot join, check the live ban list and the server log, then verify that the duration and time unit were accepted when the ban was created. Do not issue an unban blindly if the list shows a different active restriction or a separate moderation system.
Kick or ban? A practical decision framework
Use the least severe action that protects the server and is consistent with your published rules. The following comparison keeps the decision tied to the incident rather than to the command’s convenience.

Examples of proportionate use
- One-time disruption: A player floods chat, stops after a warning, and has no previous incidents. A kick with a factual reason may be enough.
- Ongoing disruption: The player reconnects and repeats the same conduct. Apply the next step in your published escalation policy, which may be a timed ban.
- Severe or repeated abuse: A restriction that must survive reconnects calls for a ban, with the duration and review process recorded.
- Wrong decision: If staff discover that the wrong player was named, check the ban list and use
/unbanimmediately, then document the correction.
Troubleshooting failed commands and unexpected results
“Unknown command” or a syntax error
Run the matching /help command. Version changes and mods can rename commands, alter argument order, or remove timed options. The Wiki page’s 1.15 verification note is a warning not to treat that page as a universal syntax reference.
“You do not have permission”
Confirm that you are connected as an administrator or using the server console. Ask an owner to check the privilege set; controlserver is listed as a common server-control privilege, but the exact names on your installation are authoritative. Use /help privileges to see what the running server exposes.
The player reconnects after a kick
That is the expected distinction between a kick and a ban. A kick ends the current session but does not create a join restriction. If a later return is not acceptable, review the incident and apply the appropriate ban syntax confirmed by /help ban.

The player can still join after a supposed ban
- Run
/list bannedand verify that the exact name is present. - Check whether the timed duration already expired.
- Confirm that the command was accepted rather than rejected for syntax or permission.
- Look for a mod or proxy that manages access separately from the built-in ban list.
- Read the server log for the authoritative result.
Because the running server is the final authority, the list, help output, and log from that instance take precedence over a guide written for another release.
The reason is missing or displayed differently
Kick reasons are optional, and the current hosting guide says they are displayed when supplied. Ban reason display and formatting can depend on the installed version or mods. Verify the behavior with a trusted staff account before promising players a particular message format.
Using a hosted control-panel console
If your provider supplies a web console, the moderation workflow is the same as in-game: open the console for the correct Vintage Story instance, confirm that it is running, and enter the command. The console is useful when the offending player is preventing normal administration or when no privileged moderator can connect.
Copy the command into the console without adding quotation marks, punctuation, or a leading prompt character unless the panel’s instructions require them. After execution, check the console response and, for bans, run /list banned. Keep in mind that a panel may show more than one server; selecting the wrong instance can make a valid command appear ineffective.
Build a moderation record that survives staff changes
Commands change a player’s connection state, but a consistent record prevents disputes and accidental repeat actions. For each kick or ban, record:

- The date and time, including the server’s time zone.
- The moderator or console account that issued the command.
- The rule involved and a concise description of what happened.
- The command type and, for a ban, the duration accepted by the server.
- Relevant screenshots, chat logs, or other evidence stored according to your community’s privacy policy.
- The review or appeal date, if your rules provide one.
Keep the public message shorter than the internal record. This limits unnecessary disclosure while giving other moderators enough context to avoid contradictory decisions.
Version and mod safety checklist
Before moderating a live server, use this checklist:
- Identify the Vintage Story version and the mods loaded on the target instance.
- Connect with an account that has administrator access, or open the correct server console.
- Run
/help kick,/help ban,/help unban, and/help privileges. - Copy the syntax shown by that server, including any required name format, time unit, or reason position.
- Double-check the player name and intended duration before executing.
- For a ban, run
/list bannedand save the result with your moderation record. - If the behavior or result differs from the help output, stop and inspect the server log and mod documentation instead of repeating an uncertain command.
This process matters especially on modded servers: a mod can add, remove, or change commands, so a command that worked on an unmodded installation may not be valid on yours.
