Keep your phone inside a correctly sized waterproof pouch when it is not in use, and check your exact phone model’s water-resistance guidance rather than relying on its rating as a guarantee. Before leaving, charge it and check the festival’s phone and charging rules. If the phone or its charging port gets wet, unplug it and let it dry with airflow before connecting a cable.

Check the event details
Look at the festival’s weather updates and rules for phones, bags, and accessories. Check whether the event offers charging stations or portable-charger rentals; these services vary by festival. For example, see the event-specific information from Glastonbury Festival and Lollapalooza.

Use a pouch as your rain barrier
Choose a waterproof phone pouch that fits your phone, closes securely according to its maker’s instructions, and has a lanyard or another way to secure it against drops. A clear pouch may let you check tickets or messages without taking the phone out, but touch-screen operation depends on the pouch and phone combination. Test the fit and controls at home; no particular pouch is guaranteed to work with every device. Samsung recommends a waterproof pouch when travelling in rainy weather in its Galaxy water-protection guidance. A pouch is an extra barrier, not proof that the phone itself is waterproof.

Water-resistance ratings and their test conditions vary by model. Apple says its devices are tested under controlled laboratory conditions and that resistance can decrease with normal wear; Samsung also cautions that protection may degrade. Look up your model’s own support documentation, such as Apple’s guidance on splash, water, and dust resistance or Samsung’s water-protection guidance linked above. A rating does not promise permanent protection in festival conditions.

Charge first and plan a dry battery reserve
Start with a full charge. A power bank can provide extra battery capacity, but it does not protect a phone from rain or make a wet charging port safe. Keep the bank, cable, and their connections dry. If you plan to rely on event charging or rentals, confirm availability with your festival rather than assuming the service will be offered.
At the festival: keep the phone protected and accessible
- Leave the phone in its pouch when you are not actively using it, and keep the closure secured as the pouch maker directs.
- Use the lanyard or another secure carry method in crowds and muddy areas. Keep wet hands off the exposed phone and its connectors where possible; Samsung advises avoiding use with wet hands.
- Do not connect a cable to a wet phone or handle charging connections in wet conditions. A power bank is only useful if the phone, cable, and connection are dry.
- When a thunderstorm threatens, put the phone away and seek safe shelter. A rain shelter or small shed is not safe lightning shelter. The National Weather Service says, “Rain shelters, small sheds, and open vehicles are not safe.” See its lightning shelter guidance.
If your phone gets wet: disconnect it and let it dry
- Unplug cables and accessories. Do not charge through a wet connector. Apple warns that charging while a connector is wet can corrode pins and cause damage or connectivity problems. Wait until both phone and cable are completely dry before wired charging; see Apple’s liquid-detection alert guidance.
- Let liquid drain and use airflow. For an iPhone, Apple advises holding the connector facing down, gently tapping the phone to remove excess liquid, then leaving it in a dry place with airflow. Drying can take time. For other phones, follow the instructions for the exact model.
- Avoid drying shortcuts that can cause damage. Do not use external heat or compressed air, insert a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into the connector, or put the phone in rice. Apple’s liquid-detection guidance covers these precautions.
- Follow model-specific cleaning advice for other liquids. If the phone was splashed with something other than water, check its maker’s directions before cleaning. Apple advises rinsing the affected area with tap water after a non-water splash and wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth; do not assume that instruction applies to another phone model.
When lightning is a threat, prioritize shelter over the phone
If you hear thunder or the venue issues a storm warning, stop using your phone and move to safe shelter. The U.S. National Weather Service says rain shelters, small sheds, and open vehicles are unsafe for lightning. CDC guidance recommends seeking shelter immediately and identifies a fully enclosed vehicle or a shelter with four walls and a roof as safe options.
