Close the home back up as conditions change. This approach can work well where nights are cool and breezy, but it is not a substitute for air conditioning in every climate or a reason to compromise ventilation, air quality, or security.
Before a warm day, stop sunlight from heating rooms
Shade sunny windows before the sun warms the glass and interior. Blinds, curtains, external shutters, roller blinds, and awnings are among the options listed in England’s heatwave checklist. Choose what fits the window and your home: renters may face installation limits, and window coverings must not obstruct required exits or safe window operation.

Where possible, keep shades closed over sunlit windows during the hottest part of the day, especially on exposed east-, west-, or south-facing windows. The right choice depends on the building and the sun; no one covering is best for every home.

During the day, avoid adding heat
Keep windows closed when outdoor air is hotter than the indoor air and opening them would warm the home. Reduce avoidable heat from cooking, lighting, and electronics where practical. Use your available cooling system according to its instructions; ventilation is not always a replacement for mechanical cooling.

Fans move air and can improve how a room feels, but they do not make hot outdoor air cooler. England’s checklist advises using electric fans if the air temperature is below 35°C; that is jurisdiction-specific public-health guidance, not a universal threshold for all places or conditions. It also advises against aiming a fan directly at the body because of dehydration risk. Follow local heat-health advice, particularly during extreme heat.
At night, use cooler air only when conditions allow
Night flushing—using cooler outdoor air to remove heat stored in a home—can help carry comfort into the next day. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education resource says, “Natural ventilation works best in climates with cool nights and regular breezes.” Results vary with climate, building layout, and how much heat the home has stored.
Check the conditions first
- Open windows only when outdoor air is cooler than the indoor air and the change will help rather than add heat.
- Do not rely on open-window cooling when outdoor air is smoky or polluted, or when heat or humidity makes bringing it inside counterproductive. Check local air-quality and heat alerts.
- Consider rain, insects, noise, and whether the openings can be secured. Do not leave windows open if household safety or security would be compromised.
The Department of Energy says natural ventilation should not be used when outdoor air quality is poor. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also advises evaluating outdoor pollution sources before relying on natural ventilation (EPA indoor air quality guidance).

Give air a route through the home
If conditions are suitable, open windows on different sides or levels to create a through-flow. Cross-ventilation moves air between openings; warm air rising can also help draw cooler air in through lower openings and out through higher ones, an effect often called the chimney effect. A portable or window fan can help draw in or distribute cooler air, but use it only while outdoor conditions are beneficial.
Homes with windows on only one side, restricted openings, or little breeze may not get much airflow from this method. A thermometer can help compare indoor and outdoor temperatures; a humidity reading may also help you judge whether outside air is likely to make a damp home less comfortable. These monitors do not detect smoke or other pollution, so use air-quality alerts as well.
Close up again as the day warms
When outdoor air becomes warmer than the indoor air, close windows. Draw shades over windows before direct sun heats the rooms. This timing helps retain the benefit of cooler nighttime air while limiting later solar gain, although how long a home stays cool depends on its construction, exposure, and weather.

Keep ventilation and indoor air healthy
Do not block vents or seal every air leak as a quick fix. Ventilation removes household moisture and pollutants; inadequate ventilation can contribute to condensation and mould. The UK government’s home ventilation guidance advises keeping trickle vents open and unblocked and following the manufacturer’s instructions for mechanical ventilation. Australia’s YourHome airtightness guidance similarly emphasizes pairing airtightness with reliable ventilation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are planning air sealing or window replacement, make sure the work preserves the ventilation your home needs. For persistent overheating, a qualified energy or ventilation professional can assess the building and recommend improvements that account for moisture and indoor air quality.

England’s heatwave checklist identifies top-floor flats, homes with windows on only one side, little shade, large unshaded east-, west-, or south-facing windows, and some highly insulated homes that trap heat as potential overheating concerns. It also flags older adults, young children, pregnant people, people with long-term health conditions or certain medications, and people who cannot readily adapt their behavior as groups who may face greater risk.

If someone becomes unwell during hot weather, treat it as a health concern rather than a home-comfort problem. Follow local emergency and health guidance; England’s checklist links to NHS guidance on heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Choose tools for the job, not just the label
- Portable fan: Check airflow direction, room coverage, noise, stability, and cleaning needs. It moves room air; it does not cool a room by itself.
- Window fan: Check window dimensions, installation and security, airflow direction, noise, and whether it can be removed quickly when outdoor conditions change.
- Blinds or curtains: Match the covering to window fit, sun exposure, light needs, renter restrictions, and whether you can still open the window safely.
- Temperature and humidity monitor: Look for readable indoor/outdoor measurements and place sensors appropriately. It cannot measure smoke or other pollutants.
The Department of Energy notes that ventilation is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates, although other measures can reduce the need for air conditioning (DOE natural ventilation guidance). In those conditions, prioritize shading and suitable mechanical cooling, and keep ventilation systems operating as designed.
