To stop worship music clipping, keep every stage of the audio path below digital overload: the microphones and instruments, mixer channels and stream output, audio interface, OBS input, and final stream output. Find and fix the first stage where distortion appears; lowering OBS’s final fader cannot repair audio that has already clipped. Then build a broadcast mix suited to remote listeners, monitor OBS’s peak meter, and test a recording or stream before relying on it.
What clipping is—and where it can happen
Digital audio reaches its full-scale ceiling at 0 dBFS. If a signal is overloaded before it reaches OBS, distortion is already baked in; reducing its level later only makes the distorted signal quieter. OBS notes that its internal floating-point processing can exceed 0 dBFS, but the audio ultimately recorded or streamed must remain below that ceiling to avoid clipping (OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Check the complete path, not just the OBS fader: source, console channel and bus, console stream output, interface or capture input, OBS source, filters, and encoded stream. Listen at each point where you can. The earliest point where distortion becomes audible or a meter overloads is where to start correcting levels.
Find the first overloaded stage
- Listen to the source. Check microphones, instruments, playback devices, and any source processing. If distortion is present at the source, fix that before adjusting downstream levels.
- Check the console. Watch the channel, bus, and stream-output meters while the loudest representative music and speech are playing. If the console output is already distorted, reduce the responsible channel or bus level and inspect its processing.
- Check the interface or capture input. If the console feed sounds clean but the interface input is overloaded, lower the console feed or the interface’s input gain, as applicable. Listen to the interface or its monitor output if available.
- Check OBS’s input and output meters. If the feed is clean before OBS but its input level overloads, reduce the incoming feed or input gain. If the input is clean but OBS’s output peaks reach the ceiling, reduce the broadcast mix or OBS source level and check the filter order.
- Record and review. Make a test recording and listen back on a monitoring system before the service. OBS recommends starting at the device, listening through the signal path, and reviewing a recording before a live event (OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details).
A private or unlisted stream preview can help you assess the received stream, but it does not replace checking the signal upstream. If distortion occurs only after a particular stage, focus on that stage and those feeding it.

Mix for the broadcast, not just the sanctuary
The room’s main mix is designed for the people in the building. A phone or computer listener hears a different acoustic balance, and the mix that works in the sanctuary may not keep both music and speech clear online. Yamaha’s church livestream guide explains that livestream mixing has different needs from sanctuary sound (Yamaha, A Guide to Live Streaming for Churches).
If your console supports it, create a dedicated broadcast output using an aux, matrix, or other separate mix. This lets the operator balance worship music and speech for remote listeners without changing the room mix. Keep speech understandable over the music, and listen to the broadcast feed itself rather than assuming that the sanctuary sounds balanced.

- SIUNIMAS Pro S303 XLR/TRS/RCA/AUX/1/4" 1/8" Passive Stereo Multi-Stage Level Inline Variable Audio Attenuator Adjustable Audio Attenuation Box for Home Theater and Official Audio Performance Playing.
- Multi-stage Level Attenuation: Well build a top-mounted knob that provides six precise attenuation settings: 0dB, -3dB, -6dB, -9dB, -12dB, and -15dB. Its primary purpose is to accurately reduce the signal level before it reaches downstream equipment.
- Professional-Grade Interface Compatibility: Well Support RCA connectors (red/white for L/R), it accepts line-level stereo signals and is compatible with common 3.5mm (aux) audio sources. And Includes a combo XLR and 6.5mm TRS jack, allowing direct connection to professional microphones, guitar amps, mixing consoles, or audio interfaces with high-impedance or high-level outputs.
- Passive Signal Conditioning: As a purely passive device, it utilizes an internal precision resistor network for attenuation. It requires no external power, introduces minimal electromagnetic interference, and effectively prevents clipping distortion in downstream equipment caused by overly strong signals.
- Widely Applications: (A) Professional Recording & Mixing Studios. (B) Live Performances & Band Rehearsals. (C) Hi-Fi Home Theater & Audiophile Systems. (D) Broadcasting & Conference Systems etc.
Do not judge perceived loudness from the peak meter alone: sources that produce similar peaks can still sound differently loud. Compare levels by listening to the stream mix, including spoken passages and the loudest musical sections (OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details).

OBS’s main mixer bar is a peak-program meter; the black moving indicator is a VU-style measure that integrates RMS over 300 ms and is more indicative of perceived sound level. Watch the peak-hold indication for brief transients that may be easy to miss while looking only at the moving bar.

OBS documents -20 dBFS as its meter alignment level and -9 dBFS as its permitted maximum reference. OBS chose the latter with margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. These are OBS meter references, not a YouTube live loudness target or a universal mix recipe (OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details).
Keep peaks comfortably below 0 dBFS and check the console and interface meters as well as OBS. A lower final level is not a cure for an earlier clipped signal, so confirm that each upstream stage remains clean.

Add an OBS limiter as a final guard
OBS’s Limiter filter can catch peaks that would otherwise exceed the output ceiling. It is available in OBS on Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS says to put the limiter last in the filter chain; its documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and a 60 ms release, not settings that every church must use (OBS Project, Limiter Filter).
- In OBS, open the audio source’s mixer menu and choose Filters.
- Add the Limiter filter to the relevant audio source or mix.
- Move it to the end of that source’s filter chain.
- Test it with loud music and speech. Adjust only as needed so occasional peaks are contained without audible pumping or flattening.
A limiter cannot undo distortion caused at a microphone, console, or interface input. If it is reducing gain frequently, lower the upstream mix or address excessive dynamics rather than relying on heavier limiting. Excessive limiting can create audible artifacts, and playback handling varies across internet audio players; AES guidance on this subject is broad internet-audio distribution guidance, not a YouTube Live setting (Audio Engineering Society, Loudness Guidelines for Internet Audio Streaming).

Test the encoded stream and plan for ongoing checks
- Rehearse using audio and video activity similar to the real service, including the loudest music and speech transitions.
- Make a recording and listen through it before the event. Check for distortion, sudden level changes, and speech masked by music.
- Run a test stream where practical and listen to the received stream, not only OBS’s local monitoring.
- During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and watch for audio problems as well as connection or encoding issues.
- For a 24/7 broadcast, schedule people to check the received stream periodically. The requirements for unattended operation and recovery depend on the church’s equipment and configuration.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing with audio and video activity similar to the event and monitoring stream health. Its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support AAC or MP3; the advanced settings list 128 kbps for stereo audio. That bitrate concerns audio transport, not loudness or clipping control (YouTube Help, Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions). The guidance does not establish an official YouTube Live loudness target, so do not treat a figure such as -14 LUFS as a YouTube requirement.
When a routing or hardware change may help
First check what your current console and OBS can already do. A separate console output may solve the need for an independently controlled broadcast mix; an interface may be relevant if the existing setup cannot provide a suitable computer input. A hardware limiter is optional and cannot repair clipping that happens before the signal reaches it. There is no one hardware recommendation that fits every church’s mixer, interface, computer, and routing.
