How to Keep Troops Supplied Across a Shifting Frontline in Battleplan

Keep an attacking division above the game’s half-supply threshold, put a supply depot at the attack assembly point before the offensive begins, and treat every advance as a protection problem as well as a movement problem. In Battleplan, terrain affects supply flow, path length affects transfer speed, and a depot beside a thin frontline can become the first objective of an enemy breakthrough. The practical cycle is simple: prepare, advance only while the route and depot remain supportable, then pull battered units back to a depot to replenish before launching the next push.

What changes when the frontline moves

A frontline is not a fixed boundary in Battleplan. Every breakthrough, withdrawal, flank turn or stalled attack changes the distance between fighting units and their supply support. A depot that was safe behind a compact line can become exposed when the line stretches forward. A route that was short across clear ground can become slow when an advance crosses difficult terrain or forces supplies to travel around a salient.

The official product description says that supply is realistically simulated and that terrain dictates supply flow. That means supply planning cannot be reduced to placing a depot near the map’s visual center. You must judge the route between the depot and the units, the terrain along that route, and whether friendly forces can protect the depot if the enemy attacks the most exposed section of the line.

The game’s official guidance also treats supply as an operational rhythm. Divisions should assemble and replenish before an offensive, move with a depot-backed route, and return to a depot after extensive fighting. Zone orders then determine how readily units continue advancing when that support picture deteriorates.

The non-negotiable pre-attack supply check

Do not attack below half of maximum supply

Matrix Games’ offensive developer diary gives a clear rule of thumb: do not launch a division below half of its maximum supply. This is a launch decision, not a suggestion to make up for shortages after the attack has already started. Open the division’s current supply indicator, compare it with its maximum, and postpone the operation if the formation has not reached the required level.

Waiting is usually the safer choice when the alternative is beginning an attack that immediately consumes the remaining stock. The rule is especially important for an armored division, because the same diary specifically warns that armored formations use supplies more quickly. An armored spearhead that starts marginally supplied can turn a promising breakthrough into a forced halt before the next depot is secure.

Assemble at the intended point of attack

Before issuing the offensive, establish the supply depot at the attack assembly point. The assembly point is where the division will begin its push, not necessarily the furthest point you hope to reach. This placement gives the attacking formation a supported starting position and lets you evaluate the route that the advance will create.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an armored division, make this step part of the standard preparation sequence rather than an emergency response. If the depot is still far behind the assembly area, the division may begin moving away from its best source of replenishment at the moment it starts consuming supplies most rapidly.

Confirm the route and the line behind it

Look backward from the assembly point before you look forward toward the objective. Identify the friendly positions that protect the depot and the connecting route. A depot supported by a compact, mutually reinforcing line is safer than one sitting beside a narrow protrusion that the opponent can isolate.

The official material does not publish a universal depot radius, transfer rate, terrain multiplier or spacing formula. Do not infer a precise distance from the map grid or assume that two locations with the same visual separation will transfer supplies at the same speed. Use the in-game supply state and the observed condition of the route instead.

Choosing a depot position as the front shifts

Short routes transfer faster

The defence developer diary states that shorter paths transfer supplies faster. This makes distance a real operational cost even when a unit is technically connected to a depot. A forward depot can reduce the time needed to move supplies to the fighting line, but only if the depot can survive the altered frontline.

When deciding between two possible positions, compare the complete path rather than measuring straight-line distance. A route that appears short may be forced around terrain or a gap in the line. A slightly more distant position on a secure, uncomplicated path can be more useful than a nearby depot whose route is repeatedly exposed or obstructed.

Terrain is part of the supply calculation

Terrain dictates supply flow, according to the official product page. The sources do not provide a terrain-by-terrain table, so the safe interpretation is qualitative: a route through more difficult or obstructed ground deserves more caution than an equally long route over easier ground. If the frontline is moving into terrain that slows transfer, plan a pause for replenishment rather than assuming the depot will support an uninterrupted march.

Terrain also changes defensive geometry. A depot behind a short, thick section of line may be safer than one beside a long, thin approach even if both appear equally close to the combat units. Treat the map’s terrain and the shape of the friendly line as one problem, not two separate overlays.

Thin fronts expose depots

The official defensive guidance warns that a depot near a thin frontline is risky if the enemy can break through. A narrow salient may place the depot close to the action, but it can also give the opponent several ways to cut it off. Before moving support forward, ask whether the depot would still be covered if the nearest friendly position were forced back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A shorter, thicker line can protect a nearby depot more effectively than a long line with large gaps between defended points. A reserve can provide another layer of protection by responding to a breakthrough before the depot itself is reached. These are defensive choices, not a fixed construction recipe: the correct answer depends on whether the current line can actually hold the approaches to the depot.

A repeatable offensive procedure

  1. Pause the operation and inspect the division. Check the division’s current supply against its maximum, its position relative to the intended assembly point, and whether it is an armored formation with faster consumption.
  2. Choose the assembly point. Use the location from which the first attack will be launched, not an arbitrary point beyond the enemy line.
  3. Place the depot there before initiating the offensive. This is the specific preparation step emphasized in the offensive developer diary.
  4. Trace the support path backward. Check how the depot connects to the rest of your line, whether the route crosses awkward terrain, and whether an enemy breakthrough could isolate it.
  5. Assign the zone order that matches the plan. Use a conditional advance when the operation depends on secure flanks; use the aggressive order only when you accept the risk of a longer, less protected push.
  6. Advance in observable stages. After a breakthrough or major withdrawal, reassess the frontline shape, the depot’s exposure and the supply state before committing the next movement.
  7. Stop for replenishment after extensive fighting. Pull the engaged units back to a depot rather than demanding another attack from formations that have already spent heavily.
  8. Rebuild the next attack from the new line. Once the units have replenished, select a new assembly point and repeat the same checks instead of treating the previous depot placement as permanently valid.

Using zone orders without outrunning support

Balanced Hold

Balanced Hold advances only when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered. That behavior makes it the more suitable order when your supply plan depends on keeping the frontline compact. By refusing to continue under an obviously dangerous flank or numerical situation, it can help preserve the line that protects the depot and the route behind it.

Balanced Hold is not a guarantee that supply will remain adequate. It governs the conditions for movement; it does not create supplies or remove terrain costs. Continue to inspect the depot and the route after the unit advances, particularly if the front has changed shape.

Seize Ground

Seize Ground is more aggressive. It pushes forward even when the formation becomes overextended. That can be useful when taking ground quickly is worth the exposure, but the supply consequence is a tactical inference from the official guidance: a farther advance generally creates a longer path, while a thin or elongated line can leave the depot less protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Seize Ground when you have deliberately accepted those risks and have a plan for the next depot-backed position. Do not treat the order as evidence that the formation can sustain an unlimited advance. If the route lengthens, the terrain worsens or the depot becomes attached to a thin front, the order can carry the unit beyond the support your original setup was designed to provide.

Zone order Movement behavior described by the official diary Supply-planning implication
Balanced Hold Advances only when flanks are secure and the force is not outnumbered Better fit for a compact, depot-protecting advance; still requires manual supply checks
Seize Ground Pushes forward even when overextended Accepts the possibility of longer paths and greater depot exposure; plan a new supported position

When to pause, withdraw and replenish

After extensive fighting

The official offensive advice is to pull units back to a depot after extensive fighting so they can replenish more quickly. A withdrawal for supply is not necessarily a failed attack. It is a deliberate reset that restores the formation before another operation consumes more of its stock.

Use the depot as the destination for that reset, not merely as a waypoint on the way to another objective. The point is to let the formation benefit from the faster replenishment available there. Once the unit has recovered, reassess whether the current depot is still protected by the frontline or whether the combat has made the position unsafe.

When the route becomes questionable

Pause if the advancing line creates a long, narrow projection, if the depot is left beside a weak section of front, or if the route crosses terrain that appears to slow transfer. The sources do not define an exact warning threshold for any of these conditions. The correct response is therefore inspection and caution, not a fabricated distance rule.

When the objective is no longer worth the exposure

An objective can remain tactically attractive while becoming operationally unsupportable. If capturing it requires the formation to continue beyond a depot that the enemy can threaten, decide whether the ground is worth a temporary halt, a depot move to a safer assembly point, or a withdrawal for replenishment. This decision belongs to the player because the official material does not prescribe a universal objective-to-depot ratio.

Managing depots during a breakthrough or withdrawal

After a breakthrough

A breakthrough often lengthens the distance between the original depot and the units that created it. Before ordering a second wave forward, inspect the new frontline rather than assuming the first depot remains optimal. If the line has become thin, secure the flanks or establish a safer support position before extending the advance.

The practical sequence is to consolidate the captured section, check whether a reserve protects the exposed approach, and then decide where the next attack assembly point should be. The depot should support that point while remaining covered by a line capable of resisting a counterattack.

After a withdrawal

A withdrawal can shorten the route to an existing depot and thicken the line around it. Use that opportunity to replenish damaged formations and rebuild a coherent defensive shape. Do not rush to restore the previous forward position if doing so would recreate the same thin-front exposure that caused the withdrawal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume automatic relocation rules

The available official sources do not explain whether depots move automatically, how relocation is initiated, or whether moving one has a fixed cost or delay. Verify the current game build’s interface when you need to reposition support. The enduring principle is independent of the exact control: the depot must be close enough for useful transfer and safe enough to survive the frontline’s next change.

Common failure patterns and fixes

The division attacks with a nearly empty stock

Symptom: The formation reaches contact and quickly loses the ability to sustain the operation. Fix: Treat the pre-attack supply check as a gate. Return to a depot and replenish before restarting the offensive rather than trying to solve the shortage after the attack has begun.

The depot is close but isolated

Symptom: The depot appears near the fighting units, yet an enemy breakthrough can reach it through a narrow section of line. Fix: Shorten and thicken the defensive section around the depot or place a reserve where it can respond to the likely breakthrough route.

The original depot is now behind an extended salient

Symptom: A successful advance leaves the attacking formation far ahead of its support. Fix: Stop extending the salient, inspect terrain and path length, and build the next attack from a depot-backed assembly point. Balanced Hold is the safer zone behavior when you need the advance to wait for secure flanks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An armored division stalls sooner than expected

Symptom: An armored formation consumes its stock faster than accompanying units. Fix: Give the armored division priority in the preparation sequence: depot at the assembly point, adequate starting supply, and a shorter, safer route wherever the map allows.

The player expects a precise radius or transfer timer

Symptom: A plan relies on an exact number that the official material never states. Fix: Use the in-game supply indication and observed route conditions. There is no published universal radius, transfer rate or terrain multiplier in the available official guidance.

A practical decision framework for a moving front

Use the following questions whenever the line changes. They are arranged in the order that prevents the most expensive mistakes.

  • Can the formation begin? Verify that the division passes the pre-attack supply check and identify whether it is armored.
  • Where is the support point? Place the depot at the intended attack assembly point before starting the offensive.
  • What protects it? Examine the line around the depot. A thin front is a warning; a shorter, thicker line or a reserve offers more protection.
  • How difficult is the route? Consider path length and terrain together. Shorter paths transfer faster, while terrain dictates flow.
  • Which movement behavior fits? Balanced Hold favors conditional progress with secure flanks; Seize Ground accepts overextension.
  • Has the situation changed? Reassess after a breakthrough, withdrawal or prolonged battle. The previous depot and zone order may no longer fit the new geometry.
  • Is it time to reset? After extensive fighting, pull units back to a depot for faster replenishment before demanding another offensive.

What the official material does not establish

Players should separate firm guidance from details that remain unspecified. The official sources establish the half-supply attack rule of thumb, depot placement at the assembly point, faster replenishment at a depot after heavy fighting, the danger of depots beside thin fronts, the benefit of shorter paths, terrain-dependent flow, and the different behavior of Balanced Hold and Seize Ground.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They do not establish an exact supply radius, a numerical transfer rate, terrain multipliers, a universal depot spacing formula, or a fixed amount of time required to replenish. They also do not provide a terrain-by-terrain table. Any guide that presents those values as universal mechanics is going beyond the stated evidence. For those details, use the supply indicators and controls in the current game build and treat observed behavior as conditional on the map and situation.

A compact pre- and post-battle checklist

Before the offensive

  • Inspect the division’s current and maximum supply.
  • Identify armored formations that will consume supplies more quickly.
  • Choose the attack assembly point.
  • Place the depot at that point.
  • Check the route’s length, terrain and connection to the friendly line.
  • Confirm that the depot is not sitting beside an unsupported thin front.
  • Select Balanced Hold or Seize Ground according to the risk you intend to accept.

After the line moves

  • Recheck the depot’s protection after every major breakthrough or withdrawal.
  • Look for a longer route or more difficult terrain between the depot and the units.
  • Consolidate exposed flanks before extending the salient.
  • Use a reserve or a shorter, thicker line to protect a vulnerable depot where possible.
  • Pull heavily engaged units back to a depot to replenish faster.
  • Choose the next assembly point from the new frontline rather than relying on the old setup.

The reliable way to keep troops supplied across a shifting frontline is to treat supply as part of the advance plan itself. Start from a properly supplied division, establish the depot where the attack begins, protect that depot with a coherent line, and reassess whenever movement changes the distance or terrain between support and combat. Aggressive orders can win ground, but they do not cancel path length, terrain or depot vulnerability; the next advance should begin only after those conditions have been checked again.
