Save every boarding pass or rail ticket before you leave a reliable internet connection, then keep at least two device-accessible copies: the operator’s downloaded app pass or a supported wallet pass, plus a locally saved PDF or screenshot. Open each copy in airplane mode before departure. A booking confirmation is useful for reference, but it may not be the scannable document required at the gate or platform.
Offline access is not automatic. It depends on the airline or rail operator, the specific ticket, the wallet service, and your device. Real-time changes, payments and some account functions still need connectivity, so check for updates while you are online and keep the operator’s print or staffed-counter fallback in mind.

Confirmation, itinerary and boarding document are different
A confirmation email or itinerary normally proves that a reservation exists and lists the journey details. The boarding pass or rail ticket is the document designed to be scanned or inspected at the checkpoint. Save both, but identify the scannable item separately before you go offline.
Why the distinction matters
VIA Rail states that a printed booking confirmation cannot be used to board. Its instructions describe a separate emailed boarding pass and a wallet option. That distinction applies beyond rail travel: an itinerary can contain a booking reference without containing the barcode or QR code that staff need.

What to locate before departure
- The boarding pass for each flight segment, including connections.
- The rail ticket for each train or journey leg.
- Any travel document the operator specifically requires at check-in or boarding.
- The confirmation and itinerary for reference if an agent needs your booking number.
If an app shows several documents, open the one labelled boarding pass, mobile pass or ticket and make sure its scannable code is visible.
Seven steps to make a travel pass usable without internet
- Start while connected to reliable Wi-Fi or mobile data. Do not wait until the airport, station or aircraft. Downloading and adding passes can require an active connection.
- Open the operator’s app or website and retrieve the live booking. Confirm the passenger name, route, date and segment. If online check-in is required, complete it while connected.
- Download the boarding pass or ticket itself. Use the app’s download, save or add-to-wallet control. Do not assume that viewing a confirmation means the pass has been stored on the phone.
- Save the confirmation and attachments locally. Download an emailed PDF or attachment instead of relying on an online mailbox. Store it in a location your phone can open without a connection.
- Create a second visual copy. Take a screenshot of the scannable pass when the operator permits it. Keep the screenshot available in the device photo app or another offline location.
- Test every intended copy in airplane mode. Turn on airplane mode, close the app, reopen it and check the wallet pass, PDF and screenshot. A pass that only appeared because it was cached during the previous session is not verified until it opens this way.
- Prepare the operator’s recovery option. Find out whether a desk can print a replacement and what identification or booking details staff may request. Procedures vary by carrier and location.
Where to store the pass
Use storage that is both genuinely offline and quick to reach at a checkpoint. The following options have different strengths and limitations.
| Storage location | Offline behavior established by the guidance | Important limitation | Best role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator app | Jet2 says boarding passes, booking details and pre-downloaded travel documents can remain viewable offline. Transavia says its app displays bookings and travel details offline and allows boarding-pass downloads. | Real-time updates and payments need a connection in Jet2’s guidance; behavior is provider-specific. | Primary copy when the operator explicitly supports offline viewing. |
| Apple Wallet | Apple supports eligible passes supplied by participating airlines. A pass added to the device can be opened from Wallet. | The airline must issue a supported pass; eligibility is not universal. | Fast access at a supported checkpoint. |
| Google Wallet | Google says saved passes can later be accessed offline. On Pixel phones version 3 and up, a boarding-pass screenshot can be added to Wallet. | An internet connection is needed while adding the screenshot, and participating providers are required. | Wallet backup after setup is completed online. |
| Local PDF or attachment | An emailed file can be opened from local device storage without retrieving the message online. | A PDF may be a confirmation rather than a scannable ticket, so inspect its contents. | Readable reference and independent backup. |
| Screenshot | Emirates describes a screenshot as an option for retaining a boarding pass. | It is a static image and may not reflect a later gate, seat or schedule change. | Quick visual backup if the code is clear. |
| Printed pass | Vueling says a passenger can obtain a printed boarding pass at the desk at no extra charge if the phone fails or its battery runs down. | Printing rules differ by operator, airport and location. | Fallback when the device or battery is unavailable. |
Operator and wallet behavior you should know
Jet2
Jet2 describes offline access for some app content, including boarding passes, booking details and travel documents that were downloaded in advance. Its guidance separates those stored items from real-time updates and payments, which require a connection. Download before leaving coverage and do not expect an offline app to show a last-minute operational change.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Transavia
Transavia says its app can display bookings and travel details offline and lets passengers download boarding passes. Treat this as a carrier-specific capability: confirm that your own booking shows a downloaded pass before switching to airplane mode.
Air Canada and Apple Wallet
Air Canada says its Wallet boarding pass downloads directly to the device and needs no network connection to display. Apple’s guidance adds a qualification: the pass must be eligible and supported by the airline. If an airline does not offer an eligible Wallet pass, use its app or a local file instead.
Google Wallet
Google Wallet also depends on participating providers. Google documents adding a boarding-pass screenshot to Google Wallet on Pixel phones version 3 and up. The phone needs internet access during the add-to-Wallet process; after the pass is saved, it can be accessed offline. Complete that setup before travel, not at the checkpoint.

VIA Rail
VIA Rail’s instructions make the confirmation-versus-ticket distinction explicit: a printed booking confirmation is not a boarding document. Retrieve the emailed boarding pass or use the supported wallet option, and keep the confirmation only as a reference copy.

Emirates identifies a screenshot as an available way to retain a boarding pass. Capture the complete code and the identifying details around it while the pass is displayed. Because a screenshot is static, check the live pass first if anything about the journey changes.
Vueling
Vueling says its desk can print a boarding pass at no extra charge when a phone fails or its battery runs down. This is a carrier-specific fallback, not a universal airport rule, so check the policy for the operator and departure location on your itinerary.
How to save an app pass correctly
- Sign in to the official operator app while online.
- Open the exact reservation and select the flight or train segment you will board first.
- Complete any required check-in step and wait for the boarding-pass or ticket screen to load fully.
- Use the app’s download or wallet control. If there is no such control, look for an offline-travel-document option or save the supplied attachment.
- Repeat for every segment. A pass for the outbound journey does not automatically include a return or connecting leg.
- Close the app, enable airplane mode and reopen the saved item. Scroll or tap far enough to confirm that the code, name and journey details are present.
Some apps retain selected content but not every function. Jet2’s example keeps downloaded documents available while leaving real-time updates and payments dependent on a connection. Plan to use the app as a document viewer offline, not as a full replacement for online account access.
How to use Apple Wallet or Google Wallet
Adding a supported airline pass
Choose the operator’s Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet control while connected. Complete the installation, then open the wallet with connectivity disabled. The pass should display from the device rather than fetching it again.

One-click scans. No signup required.
When the wallet button is missing
A missing wallet button usually means the carrier, ticket type or device is not eligible for that wallet flow. Apple requires an eligible pass supplied by a participating airline, and Google requires participating providers. Keep the operator app and a local file instead of repeatedly trying to force an unsupported pass.

Adding a screenshot to Google Wallet
Google’s documented screenshot method applies to Pixel phones version 3 and up. Perform the add while online, because the setup process needs internet access. Once saved, the pass can be opened offline. The resulting wallet item remains a snapshot, so it does not automatically incorporate later changes.
PDFs, email attachments and screenshots
Save the actual file, not just the message
If the operator emails a boarding pass or ticket as a PDF or attachment, download it to local storage. An email app may show a previously loaded message offline, but relying on that behavior is less certain than opening a file stored on the device. Keep the confirmation PDF too when it contains booking references or contact details.
Make a screenshot that can be scanned
Display the entire boarding pass at a readable size before capturing it. Keep the code unobstructed and avoid cropping away the passenger name or flight information that staff may compare. Store the image where you can find it quickly without opening an online photo service.
Understand the update risk
A PDF or screenshot cannot refresh itself. Emirates presents screenshots as an option, but any static copy can become stale after a schedule, gate, seat or operational change. Before leaving connectivity, open the current operator pass and recapture or redownload it if the details have changed.
Test offline access before you travel
Testing is a practical safeguard based on the providers’ descriptions of offline behavior; carriers do not all prescribe the same test. Use this sequence for each document:
- While online, open the app pass, wallet pass, local PDF and screenshot.
- Turn on airplane mode. If your device separately allows Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, leave them off for the test.
- Force-close the operator app, reopen it and navigate to the saved pass.
- Open the wallet and select the pass without using a web link.
- Open the PDF from local storage and zoom the code until it is clearly visible.
- Open the screenshot and check that it is the latest version.
- Turn connectivity back on and check for changes immediately before you leave coverage.
If an item fails during the test, treat it as an online-only copy. Download it again, use a different storage method or contact the operator while you still have service.

Keep a recovery plan for a dead or unavailable phone
Offline storage helps only while the device can display the document. A drained battery, damaged screen, lost phone or locked account can remove every digital copy at once.
Recommended Free Tools
- Record the booking reference and passenger name where you can retrieve them without the phone, subject to your own privacy and security needs.
- Know the airport or station desk that handles replacement boarding passes or tickets.
- Check the operator’s rule for printing, including whether a fee applies and what identification is accepted.
- Carry a paper copy when the operator recommends or permits one, especially for journeys with limited staffed support.
- Keep the device charged before the checkpoint. A small USB-C power bank may be useful, but battery-carrying rules differ by jurisdiction, so verify the rules that apply to your trip.
Vueling’s no-extra-charge desk printing in a phone-failure or dead-battery situation illustrates why the operator’s own procedure matters. Do not assume another airline or rail company offers the same service.
Troubleshooting common failures
The confirmation opens, but no barcode appears
Look for a separate boarding-pass or ticket link in the app or email. VIA Rail’s guidance shows why a confirmation alone may not be accepted. Complete online check-in if the operator requires it, then save the newly issued pass.
The app says it cannot connect
Use the locally downloaded PDF, wallet pass or screenshot if you already tested one successfully. If none was saved, find a staffed desk or service point while you still have time; offline mode cannot create a pass that was never downloaded.
The wallet pass will not add
Check eligibility and provider support. Apple and Google both limit wallet functionality to supported passes or participating providers. Use the operator app and local file as the primary path when the wallet option is unavailable.
The screenshot shows old information
Reconnect, open the live pass, check for changes and capture a new screenshot. Keep the old image only if the operator confirms that it remains valid; otherwise replace it.

The phone battery is empty
Use the operator’s published print or replacement process. Vueling explicitly describes desk printing at no extra charge in this situation, but other operators may have different rules.
A rail attendant rejects the confirmation
Present the actual rail ticket or boarding pass, not the booking confirmation. If the ticket is inaccessible, follow the rail operator’s staffed-counter procedure and provide the booking details from your fallback record.
A practical multi-copy setup
For each flight or train segment, arrange copies in this order:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Primary: the operator app pass or a supported wallet pass that you opened in airplane mode.
- Secondary: a locally stored PDF or attachment.
- Visual backup: a current screenshot with the code fully visible.
- Human fallback: the operator’s desk, print or replacement procedure and your booking reference.
This arrangement balances speed at the scanner with resilience if an app, wallet, file or device fails. Keep the copies on the device you will actually carry; a document left in an online account is not an offline copy.
What offline mode cannot guarantee
- It cannot deliver real-time schedule, gate or service changes after the last successful connection.
- It cannot process payments or other online account actions that the operator requires.
- It cannot make an unsupported airline pass eligible for Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
- It cannot turn a booking confirmation into a boarding pass or rail ticket.
- It cannot replace a staffed or printed fallback when the phone itself is unavailable.
Use the final period of connectivity for two tasks: refresh the live booking and verify that every saved copy still matches it.
