How to Keep Track of Upcoming Indie Game Showcases and Publisher Events

The most reliable way to find upcoming indie showcases is to combine three layers: Steamworks for Valve-run event dates and rules, an independent festival directory for discovery, and the organizer’s own page for final confirmation. Save the public show date separately from registration, asset, demo-review, or press deadlines, then add reminders with the time zone, platform, eligibility and official page recorded.

Use a three-layer tracking system

No single public calendar is established as a complete list of every indie showcase, publisher livestream, regional festival and themed Steam event. A layered routine gives you broad discovery without treating an aggregator as the final authority.

1. Start with Steamworks for Valve-run events

Steamworks is the authoritative place to check Steam Next Fest dates, participation requirements and edition-specific deadlines. Its upcoming-events schedule currently lists Steam Next Fest for October 19–26, 2026, February 22–March 1, 2027, and June 14–21, 2027. These dates can change, so revisit the official schedule before committing a launch plan or booking travel.

For the October 2026 edition, Valve’s documentation gives the opening and closing time as October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT through October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT. The same documentation lists August 31 as the registration deadline, September 14 as a press-preview review milestone, and September 28 as another review milestone. Those are preparation dates, not alternate festival dates.

Valve describes Next Fest as “an opportunity to get early feedback from players and build an audience for a future launch on Steam.” That makes the event useful for both audiences: players can plan a week of demos and broadcasts, while developers need a much earlier production and submission schedule.

2. Add a broad indie-event directory

Use a directory such as IndieCtrl to discover opportunities outside Valve’s own calendar. Its listings cover different kinds of events, including themed Steam events, online showcases and in-person gatherings. Entries commonly show a month, a closing date and a link to the event page. Coverage varies by organizer and region, so treat each entry as a lead to investigate rather than a confirmed booking.

3. Filter Steam festivals by useful attributes

CanopyFest provides a filterable catalogue for Steam festivals. Month, country and theme filters help narrow a long list when you are looking for a particular genre, territory or time window. Its game-matching path can also be useful when a developer is checking whether a title fits a festival’s stated focus. Filtering improves discovery; it does not replace reading the organizer’s current rules.

4. Follow organizers and publishers directly

After you identify an event series that fits your interests, follow the organizer’s channel on the platform where announcements appear. For example, the Steam page for Fellow Traveller’s Story-Rich Showcase invites users to follow it for updates and describes the program as a showcase for narrative-driven indie games. That page documents a useful follow mechanism and the event’s focus; its listed broadcast took place in June 2026, so it should not be treated as proof that another edition is currently upcoming.

What to record for every event

A calendar entry that contains only a title and a date is easy to misread. Capture the following fields when you save an opportunity:

  • Event name and edition: Include the year or season so an old listing cannot be mistaken for a new one.
  • Organizer: Record the publisher, festival team, platform or community responsible for the event.
  • Show date and time: Include the time zone. October 2026 Next Fest, for example, begins at 10:00 AM PDT, not simply “October 19.”
  • Format and platform: Note whether it is a streamed presentation, a Steam festival page, an in-person event, or a hybrid program.
  • Physical location: For an in-person event, save the city, venue and country. A directory’s country filter is not a substitute for the venue’s own details.
  • Submission or registration deadline: Keep this as its own date and reminder.
  • Asset and review milestones: Add separate reminders for trailers, builds, screenshots, store-page checks, press previews and demo reviews when the organizer supplies them.
  • Eligibility: Save requirements such as genre, platform, release window, store-page status, demo status, region or whether a title has appeared in a previous edition.
  • Official event page: Keep the organizer’s current page, not only the directory page where you first found it.
  • Date last checked: Write down when you verified the listing so stale information is obvious.

Use separate calendar events for the application deadline and the public show. Give the deadline an earlier alert than the broadcast so a missed submission cannot be confused with a missed viewing date.

Which source should you use?

Source Best use Scope and filters Deadlines and links What to verify
Steamworks upcoming-events schedule Official Valve dates and Steam Next Fest policies Steam-run events; edition-specific schedules Official documentation can list registration and review milestones Current edition, time zone, eligibility, release timing and demo requirements
IndieCtrl directory Broad discovery of showcases, themed Steam events and in-person opportunities Varied event types and months; coverage depends on submitted or listed events Many entries show closing dates and link to an event page Organizer confirmation, location, format, open-call status and current deadline
CanopyFest catalogue Finding Steam festivals by a narrower profile Month, country and theme filters, plus a game-matching path Use the linked festival page for application details Whether the festival is accepting entries, its genre fit, and the current edition
Organizer or publisher page Final confirmation and announcements One event series or publisher at a time Usually the most current show, submission and broadcast information Date, time zone, eligibility, assets, platform and any changes

Steamworks is strongest for Valve’s own calendar and rules. IndieCtrl and CanopyFest are discovery layers with different coverage and filtering. The organizer’s page is the deciding source when dates or requirements conflict.

How to verify a listing before you act

  1. Open the current organizer page. Do not rely on a directory’s month label or an old social post. Look for the specific edition and year.
  2. Confirm the public program date. Check the start and end time, time zone and whether the date refers to a broadcast, a Steam page opening, an in-person day or an application window.
  3. Separate every deadline. Record registration, submission, asset delivery, press preview, demo review and final build dates independently. A date described as “deadline” may apply only to one of these steps.
  4. Read eligibility line by line. Check platform, genre, region, release window, store-page status, demo availability, prior participation and any restrictions on unreleased or previously shown games.
  5. Check the delivery format. A showcase may request a trailer, a key list, a playable build, a press kit, a store link or a particular video resolution. Save the requested format alongside the deadline.
  6. Record the time zone. Convert the organizer’s time to your working calendar, but retain the original zone in the notes to prevent daylight-saving mistakes.
  7. Save the official URL and last-checked date. If a directory changes its entry later, you can identify which information you verified and when.
  8. Recheck before submitting or traveling. Event formats, open calls, venues and dates can change after a directory has listed them.

Steam Next Fest: a dated example of why the fields matter

The October 2026 Next Fest illustrates the difference between a festival date and the work required to appear in it. Steamworks lists the public festival from October 19 at 10:00 AM PDT to October 26 at 10:00 AM PDT. For that edition, Valve’s documentation listed an August 31 registration deadline, a September 14 press-preview review milestone and a September 28 review milestone.

For October 2026, Valve required an upcoming game with a public Steam store page and a publicly playable demo. The game must release after the festival, and a title can participate in only one Next Fest. These conditions are edition-specific; never assume that a future edition will use identical wording or dates.

A developer’s calendar could therefore contain at least five distinct entries: registration on August 31, press-preview review on September 14, review on September 28, the festival opening on October 19 and the festival closing on October 26. Add production tasks before those dates rather than treating the public opening as the only milestone.

Build different calendars for players and developers

For players planning what to watch

Prioritize announced broadcast dates, Steam event pages and on-demand viewing details. A practical player calendar can use one entry for the live show and another for the period when demos or recordings are available. Include the time zone and platform so a “showcase” is not mistaken for an in-person event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Follow the event or publisher page where updates are posted.
  • Set an alert shortly before the broadcast and another at the start time.
  • Save the Steam festival page or official video destination.
  • Note whether demos are expected to remain playable after the live presentation.
  • Group events by genre or publisher if you are tracking a specific type of indie game.

Do not add a developer submission deadline to a player reminder unless you are also applying to the event. It creates noise and can hide the show you actually want to watch.

For developers and publishers

Application and preparation dates deserve priority over the public broadcast. Start with eligibility, then work backward from the earliest required asset or review milestone.

  • Mark the call-for-submissions opening and closing dates.
  • Schedule store-page, demo and build-readiness checks before the organizer’s review date.
  • Reserve time for trailer, screenshots, description, press kit and requested files.
  • Record whether the event accepts unreleased games and how its release-window rule is defined.
  • Track organizer feedback, approval, placement and final confirmation separately from public promotion.
  • Keep a post-event reminder for demo support, player feedback and any promised follow-up.

For a Steam Next Fest appearance, verify the public store page and playable demo well before the edition’s registration cutoff. A game that satisfies one edition’s rules may not satisfy another’s, and the one-festival participation limit makes edition selection consequential.

A repeatable weekly routine

  1. Check the official Steamworks schedule. Review upcoming Valve dates and note any newly published edition details.
  2. Scan one broad directory. Use IndieCtrl to find events beyond Steam-run festivals, including online and physical opportunities.
  3. Filter the Steam catalogue when needed. Use CanopyFest’s month, country and theme filters for a more targeted search.
  4. Open each promising organizer page. Discard entries with no current edition, unclear ownership or no verifiable date.
  5. Classify the event. Label it as player viewing, developer submission, press opportunity, physical attendance or a combination.
  6. Enter separate calendar records. Add show, application, asset and review dates as distinct events.
  7. Set reminders at useful intervals. Developers may need reminders weeks before a deadline; players usually need an alert near the broadcast.
  8. Log the verification date. Revisit entries that have not been checked recently, especially when a deadline is approaching.

This routine takes advantage of directories without allowing them to become a hidden source of stale dates. It also keeps a player’s watchlist from becoming mixed with a developer’s production schedule.

Common tracking mistakes and fixes

Confusing a directory listing with confirmation

Symptom: The directory shows a month, but the organizer’s page has no current call or uses a different date.
Fix: Mark the entry as unverified until the organizer confirms the edition, format and date. Keep the directory only as the discovery source.

Putting every date in one calendar event

Symptom: A team remembers the festival opening but misses registration or asset delivery.
Fix: Create separate records for registration, assets, review milestones and the public show. Name each event by its action, not just the festival title.

Ignoring time zones

Symptom: A live broadcast or deadline appears to start at the wrong local time.
Fix: Store the organizer’s original time zone in the notes and let the calendar display the converted local time. Check the conversion again near daylight-saving changes.

Assuming eligibility is permanent

Symptom: A game that qualified last year is rejected this year, or a previously shown game is submitted to an event with a one-time participation rule.
Fix: Read the current edition’s rules and save them with the entry. Steam Next Fest’s October 2026 requirements, for example, included a public store page, a playable demo, a post-festival release and one participation per title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Following an event that has already happened

Symptom: A publisher page is active, but its latest listed broadcast is in the past.
Fix: Treat the page as a follow channel, not proof of an upcoming edition. Look for a new announcement with a future date before adding a show reminder.

Claiming that a calendar is exhaustive

Symptom: A team stops searching after checking one directory and misses a regional or publisher-run opportunity.
Fix: Combine the official Steamworks schedule, a broad directory, a filtered festival catalogue and direct organizer follows. No reviewed source establishes a complete list of every indie event.

How to keep the list useful over time

Use a small status system in your calendar or spreadsheet: “discovered,” “verified,” “application open,” “submitted,” “announced,” “completed” and “archived.” Keep the official page and last-checked date with each record. Archive completed events rather than deleting them; past entries help distinguish a recurring series from a one-off program and prevent duplicate reminders.

When an organizer changes a date, edit the show event and leave a note explaining the change. Do not silently move a submission deadline to the broadcast date. If an event disappears, retain the original page reference and mark the opportunity cancelled or unconfirmed, then remove future alerts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For teams, assign an owner to each deadline. A producer can own registration, a designer can own assets, a community manager can own announcement timing and a developer can own the playable build. The calendar then becomes an operational checklist rather than a passive list of links.

Bottom line for finding the next event

Check Steamworks first for official Steam dates and rules, use IndieCtrl and CanopyFest to discover additional festivals, and confirm every opportunity on the organizer’s current page. Record the show date, time zone, format, eligibility and official link, then create separate reminders for registration, assets, reviews and the public event. This approach is more dependable than relying on any single calendar and works whether you are planning a week of demos or preparing an indie game for submission.
