Keep sand hoppers out by treating the problem as a moisture-and-entry issue: identify the animal, dry persistently wet areas beside the house, shut doors during migration, and seal gaps at doors, windows, vents and other openings. Do not start with a pesticide. “Sand hopper” usually describes a beach-hopper amphipod, but “sand flea” is also used for unrelated animals, so a specimen or sharp photograph should be identified before you choose a treatment.
What a “sand hopper” is—and why identification comes first
Beach hoppers are small amphipod crustaceans, not insects. They have segmented bodies and many legs, and may look shrimp-like or move sideways. Some jump when disturbed. The amphipods described by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension have long antennae and forked appendages at the rear. Those clues are useful, but they do not identify every creature that people call a sand flea or sand hopper.

Common names overlap among coastal crustaceans, other small jumping animals and organisms associated with itchy marks. An indoor specimen that does not match the typical amphipod shape may require different advice. A bite or welt alone cannot establish that a beach hopper was responsible.

- Place a clear cup or small container over the animal and slide stiff paper underneath. Avoid crushing it or handling it directly.
- If capture is impractical, take several close photographs in bright, even light. Include one image beside a ruler or a familiar object for scale.
- Record where it was found, the date, recent rain or irrigation, and whether animals were concentrated near a door, window or damp area.
- Send the specimen or photographs to your county or state extension service, or to a qualified pest-management professional. Ask for identification before requesting a chemical treatment.
An April 29, 2026 Ask Extension response by entomologist David Shetlar, known as the BugDoc, emphasizes that terrestrial amphipods need ready access to water or high moisture because they breathe with gills like other crustaceans. That moisture dependence explains much of the practical prevention strategy, but the response concerned a particular regional specimen and should not be treated as a universal identification or bite diagnosis.

Why sand hoppers come toward a beach house
Amphipods normally use damp sand, wet debris and fresh beach wrack. When a temporary habitat dries, populations can move toward another source of moisture. Texas A&M describes amphipods invading nearby structures while seeking water after temporary habitats dry. A house can therefore be in the path of a short migration even when it has no indoor breeding site.
Look for conditions that keep the immediate perimeter wet:
- Temporary puddles after rain or irrigation.
- Downspouts discharging against the foundation.
- Low spots where water remains beside walls or entry steps.
- Leaking outdoor taps, hoses, air-conditioning condensate or irrigation lines.
- Wet mulch, soil or plant containers pressed against the building.
- Door thresholds or window wells that stay damp and shaded.
Do not treat beach wrack as a blanket removal target. It is habitat and food for coastal organisms, and homeowner authority over beach material varies by location. Concentrate on drainage and the building perimeter you control.

1. Confirm the animal before changing treatments
Start with the capture and documentation steps above. Identification determines whether amphipod guidance applies and whether an alleged bite needs a different response. If you find several types of small animals, document each type separately rather than assuming they share one cause.
2. Map where they are entering
During the next active period, inspect the exterior at dawn, dusk and after rain, when moisture differences are easiest to see. Note clusters along the bottom of exterior doors, at sliding-door tracks, around window screens, beneath vents and near utility penetrations. Indoors, check the corresponding wall or floor area. A concentration at one threshold suggests an access gap; scattered animals after a weather event may indicate a temporary migration.
Use a simple room-and-opening sketch or phone note. Mark each sighting, the nearest exterior opening and whether the surface was wet. This record helps distinguish one failed seal from a broad weather-related arrival and gives an extension specialist useful context. Do not infer a hidden nest merely because animals appear in more than one room; several rooms may share a porch, open door or ventilation route.

3. Keep exterior doors closed during a migration
Open doors are the simplest route into a beach house. During a wave of activity, close exterior doors promptly and avoid propping them open for ventilation. If people must move equipment in and out, use one controlled entry rather than leaving several doors open.
4. Correct drainage beside the structure
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends improving drainage near structures so temporary bodies of water do not form during rainy periods. Begin with low-cost corrections: redirect downspouts away from the foundation, repair leaking hoses and taps, clear blocked drains, and adjust irrigation so water does not repeatedly soak the same strip beside the house. Where grading is the cause, a drainage contractor or local building professional can advise on a durable correction.
The goal is not to make the entire coastal property dry. The goal is to stop the building edge from remaining a convenient moisture refuge. Recheck the area after the next substantial rain rather than judging success on a dry day. If a puddle disappears quickly but returns in the same place, photograph it and look for a blocked outlet, low grade or leaking line rather than assuming the beach is supplying the water.
5. Seal the openings that connect outside and inside
General home-exclusion guidance from UGA Cooperative Extension supports a layered approach:
- Exterior doors: Inspect the bottom and corners for visible daylight. If a gap exists, measure it and fit a compatible exterior door sweep. A sweep addresses the opening; it does not replace drainage work or identify the animal.
- Sliding doors: Remove accumulated grit from tracks, check that the panel closes fully, and inspect worn seals. Do not block required drainage channels in the track.
- Windows: Repair torn screens, replace missing screen clips and renew compressed seals. Check both operable windows and fixed panes for gaps at the frame.
- Vents: Confirm that vent covers and screens are intact and that their edges are sealed where appropriate. Never obstruct a vent that is required for combustion, plumbing or equipment safety.
- Utility penetrations: Inspect cable, pipe and conduit entries, especially where they pass through foundation walls or siding. Use a sealant suitable for the surface and location, and do not seal weep holes or other intentional drainage paths.
- Thresholds and foundation joints: Repair cracked sealant and deteriorated joints after identifying whether the joint is supposed to move or drain.
Sealing is most effective when you can point to a route. Caulking every visible line without understanding its purpose can trap water or interfere with ventilation. After each repair, observe the next wet-weather event and check whether sightings move to another opening; that shift is evidence to inspect the new route, not a reason to apply chemicals indiscriminately.
Which measure should you choose first?
Drainage, door sealing and identification solve different parts of the problem. Use the condition that matches what you observe rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Should you spray for sand hoppers?
Do not make pesticide the default response. Texas A&M reports that pesticide registration for controlling amphipods away from aquatic breeding sites is limited. The same source notes reports of responses to some contact insecticides, while cautioning that naturally drying conditions may explain die-offs attributed to treatment. A product that appears to work after a migration may have coincided with the weather change.
Because species, local regulations and treatment labels vary, never apply an insecticide to a beach, wetland, drainage channel or house perimeter unless the product label specifically permits that site and target. Do not pour chemicals into puddles or use a household spray as a substitute for identification. If a professional recommends treatment, ask what organism was identified, where the product may legally be applied, what entry and re-entry precautions apply, and how moisture and gaps will be corrected.
What to do during a sudden influx
- Close and control entries. Shut exterior doors and windows, and ask everyone using the house to avoid propping them open.
- Document the event. Photograph an animal, note the time and weather, and mark the rooms or thresholds where it appears.
- Remove visible animals without spreading them. Vacuum or sweep them up, empty the collection container outdoors away from doors, and clean the area. Avoid crushing unknown specimens if identification is needed.
- Check moisture immediately outside. Look for new puddles, overflowing downspouts, irrigation leaks and wet door mats or stored materials against the wall.
- Inspect the most likely gap. Check the door bottom, sliding-door track, screens and nearby vents before applying any product.
- Recheck the next day. A brief event that declines as conditions dry is different from continued entry through a structural opening.
Troubleshooting by pattern
They appear only after rain
Inspect drainage while the ground is still wet. Photograph puddles and downspout discharge, then correct the source. Keep doors closed during the period of activity and monitor whether indoor sightings stop as the perimeter dries.

They collect beneath one door
Check the threshold for daylight, warped weather-stripping and a worn sweep. Clean the threshold, measure the gap and install a compatible sweep. If animals still appear, inspect the door corners, adjacent siding joint and nearby utility penetrations.
They are found in several rooms
Do not assume multiple indoor breeding sites. Compare each room with its nearest exterior opening and look for a shared route such as a screened porch, open sliding door or vent. If the pattern does not fit the building layout, obtain identification before escalating.
They continue for weeks
Persistent activity warrants a perimeter inspection for hidden moisture and overlooked openings. Ask a local extension service or qualified pest professional to identify the specimen and evaluate the structure. A continuing problem is not proof that a pesticide is registered, effective or needed.

Do sand hoppers bite?
The answer depends on what “sand hopper” means in your area. Some organisms called sand fleas are unrelated to beach-hopper amphipods, and regional identification information can be inconsistent. The sources do not establish a universal bite risk for all animals given this name.
If someone reports a bite, preserve the animal or take a sharp photograph before discarding it. Record when and where the mark appeared, but do not diagnose the cause from the mark alone. Seek medical advice for severe pain, spreading redness, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fever or other urgent symptoms. For a recurring nuisance without urgent symptoms, local extension personnel or a qualified pest professional can help distinguish an amphipod from another biting or irritating organism.
When local help is the right next step
Contact a local extension service or qualified pest-management professional when:
- You cannot match the animal to an amphipod photograph or description.
- Activity persists after obvious gaps are sealed and nearby moisture is corrected.
- Animals are entering through a route you cannot safely access, such as a roof, crawlspace or service cavity.
- Occupants report bites and the specimen is unavailable or uncertain.
- You are considering a pesticide near water, a shared coastal property or a location with local restrictions.
Provide the specimen or photographs, the property location, dates of sightings, weather and irrigation history, and the exclusion steps already attempted. Regional experts can account for local species and regulations that a generic online label cannot.

- Keep a small container, stiff paper and a phone camera available for identification.
- After rain, inspect for puddles and downspout discharge beside the building.
- Repair leaking outdoor plumbing and adjust irrigation that repeatedly wets the foundation edge.
- Keep exterior doors closed during active migration.
- Measure and fit an exterior door sweep where a genuine bottom gap exists.
- Maintain window screens, sliding-door seals and vent covers.
- Seal appropriate utility and foundation openings without blocking intentional drainage or ventilation.
- Recheck the perimeter after the next wet-weather event.
- Escalate uncertain identification, persistent activity or bite concerns to local experts.
The most reliable strategy is layered: identify first, remove moisture conditions near the house, close the openings animals are using, and obtain local help when the species or health concern is uncertain. That approach addresses both a one-time coastal migration and the building defects that allow repeated entry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are sand hoppers coming inside my beach house?
Beach-hopper amphipods need moisture. After temporary damp habitat dries, they may move toward wetter ground or a nearby structure. Puddles, leaking irrigation, wet thresholds and open doors can make the house perimeter attractive or provide a route inside. Finding one indoors does not prove that the animal is breeding there; it may be a weather-related migration.

Will an exterior door sweep stop sand hoppers?
A properly fitted sweep can block a documented gap under an exterior door, which is one common access route. Measure the opening and choose a compatible exterior sweep, then keep the door closed during active movement. A sweep will not correct damp soil, stop entry through screens or vents, or identify an animal that is not an amphipod.
Should I remove beach wrack to prevent sand hoppers?
No blanket removal recommendation is appropriate. Fresh wrack is habitat and food for coastal organisms, and rules about altering beach material differ by location. Focus on drainage, leaks and openings on the property and building perimeter you control.
Can I use insect spray or pour pesticide into puddles?
Do not pour chemicals into puddles or make a household spray your first response. Registration for controlling amphipods away from aquatic breeding sites is limited, and an apparent die-off may simply follow natural drying. Use a product only when the label permits the exact site and target, or follow advice from a qualified local professional after identification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow can I tell a short migration from a continuing problem?
A brief cluster after rain or a drying event that declines as conditions change is consistent with temporary movement. Continued sightings for days or weeks, especially at the same threshold, call for a renewed moisture and exclusion inspection. Track dates, weather, rooms and entry points so an extension specialist can evaluate the pattern.
Do sand hoppers bite people?
The name is used for different organisms in different regions, and the available identification information is not uniform. A welt alone cannot show that a beach hopper caused it. Preserve a specimen or clear photograph and ask local extension personnel or a qualified pest professional for identification; seek medical care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
The Bottom Line
Identify the animal, reduce wet conditions beside the house, keep exterior doors closed during migrations, and seal the specific gaps animals use. Skip unproven pesticide applications, and obtain local expert help when activity persists or bites are reported.
