How to Keep Rats Out of Outdoor Food and Compost Bins

The reliable fix is to remove easy food access and close every route into the container. Put food scraps in an enclosed compost system with a lid and floor, keep every opening at or below 1/4 inch, and use a garbage can with no holes and a tight-fitting lid. Do not put kitchen scraps in an open pile when rats are present. Bury and mix scraps into the compost, cover them with brown material, and turn the pile regularly. Then remove other attractants such as pet feed, chicken feed, bird seed, fallen fruit and loose garbage.

No container is automatically secure just because it is labeled heavy-duty. Inspect corners, handles, lids, the base and the ground around the bin. Rats can exploit a small gap, chew plastic where they can get purchase, or eat from a second food source nearby. The measures below combine construction, placement and maintenance so one weak point does not defeat the rest.

Why rats keep returning to outdoor bins

Rats are opportunistic animals that adapt readily to places where people live. Oregon State University Extension wildlife specialist Dana Sanchez described both rats and mice this way: “Both species are opportunistic and adapt easily to living near people.” The statement appeared in the Extension Service article “How to keep rats away from your home and yard,” published in August 2024 and reviewed in 2025.

A compost or garbage container is only one part of the food environment. A sealed bin can still sit beside a dish of pet food, a leaking chicken-feed sack, a bird feeder, fallen fruit or an overflowing trash bag. Rats follow the easiest available calories, so prevention works best when the container and the surrounding yard are addressed together.

Rats may also investigate a pile that contains no kitchen scraps. OSU Extension notes that a pile that is not hot enough to kill insects can attract rats that feed on those insects. Excluding food scraps is therefore important, but it is not a guarantee that an exposed, cool pile will be ignored.

Build a compost system that closes the access routes

Use a lid, a floor and openings no larger than 1/4 inch

Metro’s practical design guidance is a rodent-resistant container with a lid and a floor, with no hole or gap larger than 1/4 inch. Apply that measurement to the lid seam, ventilation points, corners, door panels and the junction between the bin and the ground. A floor can include holes for drainage, aeration or contact with soil, but Metro says a perforated floor is not essential; the essential point is preventing access through openings.

Measure the actual openings rather than relying on a product description. A lid that fits loosely on one side, a warped panel or a gap created when the bin is full can turn an otherwise sound design into an entry point. Check that the lid closes fully after you add material and that the base remains in contact with the ground or its supporting frame.

Retrofit an existing bin with hardware cloth

OSU Extension says 1/4-inch hardware cloth on the bottom of a backyard bin can deter rats, mice and raccoons. A retrofit is useful only when it closes the route an animal is using. Fasten the mesh so its edges cannot be pushed aside, and inspect the sides and lid as well as the base.

Do not seal a container in a way that removes the drainage or airflow the composting method needs. Preserve the bin’s intended ventilation and drainage while covering the access route. If the bin has a removable bottom, make sure the mesh remains attached when the container is moved or emptied.

Keep food scraps out of an open pile

Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife advises against putting any food in an open compost pile when rats are a concern. Use a closed container instead. If you are managing an existing pile while you arrange a covered system, put scraps in the center, mix them into the material and cover them with a layer of browns such as dry leaves or other carbon-rich material. Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s composting brochure describes the same approach and recommends balancing “greens” with “browns.”

The Oregon brochure also says to bury food scraps at least one foot below the soil surface. That is an older, Oregon-specific recommendation, not a universal current rule for every location. Follow local composting and waste regulations where they differ, and use a covered container if digging to that depth is impractical or unsuitable for your site.

Manage moisture and turning without exposing food

The Oregon guidance describes a pile that is about as moist as a wrung-out sponge and recommends turning or mixing about once a week. When you turn, redistribute newly added scraps into the center and recover them with browns rather than leaving them on the surface. A regularly mixed pile is easier to keep balanced and reduces the chance that a concentrated pocket of food remains exposed.

Do not assume that “hot composting” by itself makes a pile rat-resistant. OSU Extension recommends hot composting or a contained system, but notes that even piles without food waste may attract rats if they are not hot enough to eliminate the insects rats eat. Temperature management is a composting objective; physical exclusion is the rat-control measure.

Secure outdoor garbage cans against entry, chewing and tipping

Start with a sound container and tight lid

CDC guidance calls for a thick plastic or metal garbage can with no holes and a tight-fitting lid. It also recommends disposing of trash frequently and regularly and cleaning up garbage around the house. Before each collection cycle, check the can’s body, bottom, handles and lid for cracks, chew marks or deformation.

Heavy-duty plastic is not automatically chew-proof. Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife cautions that rats can chew plastic when they can get started at a corner, lid or handle. A damaged rim gives an animal the purchase it needs to enlarge a small weakness. Replace a can once a rat has created a hole, and do not treat tape or a thin patch as a permanent barrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop the lid from being displaced

Use a rope, chain, bungee cord or a weight to keep the lid in place, as Washington Fish & Wildlife suggests. The restraint must still let sanitation workers remove the lid safely and must not create a sharp edge or entanglement hazard. Keep the can upright and prevent tipping; a lid that works when the can is vertical may fail after wind, a curious animal or an uneven surface moves it.

Use a secondary enclosure when chewing or tipping persists

A tight-fitting enclosure, shed or garage can add a second barrier where appropriate. Keep the garbage can accessible for collection and make sure the enclosure itself has no opening large enough for rats. An enclosure is most useful when the can is already sound; it should not be used to hide a container with an open bottom or damaged lid.

Remove food sources around the bins

OSU Extension identifies these common attractants:

  • Pet food left outdoors or stored in an open bag.
  • Chicken feed that is spilled or kept where rodents can reach it.
  • Bird seed below feeders or in unsecured storage.
  • Kitchen scraps outside the compost container.
  • Fruit that has fallen and remains on the ground.
  • Unsealed garbage or bags awaiting collection.

Store feed in closed, rodent-resistant containers, sweep up spilled seed and pick up fallen fruit. Put kitchen scraps directly into the covered system instead of a countertop bucket that is later left outdoors. Tie garbage bags closed before placing them in the can, and clean residue from the can if a bag leaks.

If several properties provide food, one household’s container changes will not resolve the wider problem. OSU Extension recommends working with neighbors when rats are present across a larger area. Coordinate removal of feed, fruit and loose waste rather than moving the same attractants from one yard to another.

Choose a system that matches your scraps, space and local rules

The options below are described by public agencies and extension services. They are not a published performance ranking, and the sources do not provide a direct test comparison among them.

System Access-control feature or instruction Food-scrap use Main maintenance or condition
Enclosed compost bin Lid and floor; openings no larger than 1/4 inch Suitable for food scraps when access is closed Keep scraps covered and mix the pile; preserve needed drainage and airflow
Open compost pile No enclosing barrier Do not use for food scraps when rats are a concern Even a pile without food can attract rats if it is not hot enough to eliminate insects
Buried food scraps Oregon DEQ brochure describes burial at least one foot below the soil surface Alternative where local rules and site conditions permit Mix scraps into the center and cover them; the one-foot depth is Oregon-specific guidance
Covered worm box Covered container Suggested by Washington Fish & Wildlife for food scraps Choose only if the box can remain closed and suits your space and maintenance capacity
Food composter Use a covered, contained design Suggested as an alternative when a current setup cannot contain scraps Check local requirements and the unit’s actual openings and closure
Green Cone Listed by Seattle Public Utilities among possible systems Option for handling food scraps Verify the product’s installation requirements and local composting rules
Homemade rodent-proof composter Build to the lid, floor and 1/4-inch opening guidance Can handle food scraps when access routes are closed Inspect construction details and maintain drainage and airflow

Seattle Public Utilities also lists burying scraps in the garden as an option. Suitability depends on available space, soil conditions, maintenance and local requirements. If your current setup cannot safely contain scraps, moving food to a covered worm box, a food composter or an approved burial method is safer than continuing to add scraps to an exposed pile.

Set up the system: a practical sequence

  1. Map every food source. Walk from the house to the compost and garbage areas. Note feed, seed, fruit, scraps, leaking bags and spilled material, including sources on neighboring properties.
  2. Select the container type. For food scraps, choose an enclosed bin, covered worm box or another covered system permitted locally. Do not use an open pile for food while rats are active.
  3. Inspect the construction. Confirm that the lid closes, the base is present, and each opening or gap is no larger than 1/4 inch. Check corners, hinges, handles, doors and the seam where the bin meets the ground.
  4. Close the base correctly. Add 1/4-inch hardware cloth to the bottom of a suitable backyard bin if that is the route an animal could use. Fasten it securely and retain the drainage and aeration the compost method requires.
  5. Prepare the compost layers. Put scraps in the center, mix them in, cover them with browns and balance greens with browns. Keep the material about as moist as a wrung-out sponge.
  6. Position the container thoughtfully. CDC advises keeping compost bins at least 100 feet from the house. Treat that distance as CDC guidance for its context, not a universal requirement; use local advice and the space available to you.
  7. Harden the garbage station. Use a thick plastic or metal can without holes, close the lid tightly, secure it against displacement and prevent tipping. Add a tight-fitting shed, garage or enclosure where appropriate.
  8. Remove residual attractants. Store pet and chicken feed securely, clean up bird seed, collect fallen fruit and remove loose garbage around the property.
  9. Check the setup after use. Make sure the lid is fully seated, food is not visible at the surface and no new chew marks, gaps or displaced hardware have appeared.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Rats are digging at the base

Inspect the floor and the ground-to-wall junction first. A bin can meet the 1/4-inch opening guidance on its lid and still provide access underneath. Add or repair securely fastened 1/4-inch hardware cloth where appropriate, while retaining drainage. If the container has no floor, move food scraps to a design with a floor or another covered system.

The lid is intact but keeps moving

Look for tipping, wind movement and a rim that does not overlap evenly. Secure the lid with a rope, chain, bungee cord or weight, and place the can so it cannot be knocked over. If collection requirements prevent a restraint, use a suitable enclosure or shed and keep the container upright.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plastic shows gnaw marks near a handle or corner

That location gives rats a starting edge. Replace the damaged container with a sound thick-plastic or metal can and eliminate the nearby food source. A patch does not remove the structural weakness, and a new can will fail again if feed, fruit or loose garbage remains accessible.

There are rats even though no food scraps go in the pile

Check whether the pile is cool and supporting insects, then inspect bird seed, pet or chicken feed, fallen fruit and garbage elsewhere. OSU Extension specifically warns that non-food piles can attract rats when they are not hot enough to kill insects. Contain the pile, remove the other attractants and coordinate with neighbors if the activity extends beyond your property.

Odors or visible scraps remain at the surface

Mix the material into the center and cover it with browns. Rebalance greens and browns and maintain wrung-out-sponge moisture. If you cannot keep scraps buried and covered, stop adding them to that pile and use a covered worm box, food composter or permitted garden-burial method.

The bin appears secure but rats continue visiting

Recheck the entire food environment rather than changing only the bin. Look under lids, around handles, beneath feeders and along the route to collection day. Remove every accessible source and ask neighbors to do the same. Excluding scraps from one container cannot by itself resolve a broader infestation.

What to inspect before buying or building a bin

Use these questions to compare designs without relying on a “rat-proof” label:

  • Access: Does the lid close on all sides, and are all openings no larger than 1/4 inch?
  • Base: Is there a floor, or can the animal reach the contents from below? If mesh is used, is it securely attached?
  • Material: Can a rat get purchase on a corner, lid or handle? Is the material already cracked or chewed?
  • Contents: Is the system intended for food scraps, or only yard trimmings?
  • Maintenance: Can you bury, cover, mix and turn the material without leaving food exposed?
  • Site: Do you have room for the system and, where relevant, the separation recommended by local authorities?
  • Rules: Does your city, county or waste service permit the chosen burial, worm-box or composting method?

These checks describe construction and operating choices, not a guarantee under every condition. Inspect the actual bin after installation and whenever the contents, weather or collection routine changes.

Key numbers and how to interpret them

Figure What it describes Qualification
1/4 inch Maximum opening or gap in Metro’s rodent-resistant compost-bin guidance; also the hardware-cloth size OSU Extension says can deter rats, mice and raccoons on a backyard-bin bottom Construction guidance, not a measured guarantee of prevention
At least 1 foot Burial depth described by an Oregon DEQ composting brochure Older, Oregon-specific guidance; follow current local rules
About once a week Turning or mixing interval in the Oregon DEQ brochure Practical compost-management advice, not a universal schedule for every system
At least 100 feet Distance from the house for compost bins in CDC guidance CDC-specific advice; not a universal requirement for every yard

None of these figures is a population statistic or a promise that rats will disappear. They are practical specifications from the named agencies and extension sources. Their value is in closing predictable access routes and making food harder to find.

When to seek broader help

Contact your local public-health, animal-control or waste-management authority when rats persist after you have removed accessible food and secured the containers, or when you see activity across several properties. Local officials can clarify burial and composting rules and may have guidance for neighborhood-scale control. Keep children and pets away from damaged containers, droppings and any contaminated food or feed while the source is being addressed.

The most durable setup is a contained food-scrap system, a sound garbage can with a restrained lid, and a yard in which feed, seed, fruit and loose waste are not left available. Treat every gap, chew mark and displaced lid as a maintenance issue, not as evidence that rats are impossible to deter.
