Prevent clipping by checking the audio level through the same playback and encoder path you will use for the always-on stream, previewing it in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitoring the result while live. YouTube’s recommended audio encoding settings describe delivery format—not a clipping limit—so they cannot substitute for checking the signal level.
What causes clipping in an always-on podcast stream?
Clipping occurs when audio exceeds the level a stage in the playback or streaming chain can handle. The signal may be too high in the episode itself, or it may become too high after playback gain, a mixer or interface, or encoder processing. An encoder can deliver audio in YouTube’s supported format and still receive audio that is already distorted.

That is why format and level need separate checks: confirm the encoder’s delivery settings, then listen to and monitor the program audio through the actual chain.

Check the encoder’s audio settings separately
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported RTMP/RTMPS audio codecs. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps for stereo. These are encoding recommendations, not a loudness target, peak ceiling, or assurance that audio will not clip. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

The cited YouTube guidance does not specify an integrated-loudness target, true-peak ceiling, limiter threshold, or attack and release settings for preventing clipping. Avoid treating any particular number as a YouTube-prescribed clipping limit.
Test the complete playback chain before relying on it
- Use representative episode audio. Choose material that reflects what the stream will actually play, including sections with louder speech, music, or transitions.
- Use the intended route. Play the recording through the same player, gain controls, mixer or interface, and encoder configuration planned for the always-on stream. A test that bypasses part of this chain may not reveal where the level becomes excessive.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the planned live stream. Do not rely only on a silent connection or a brief setup check; listen to the audio itself. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Listen for distortion. Pay attention to harsh, crackling, or flattened-sounding loud passages and transitions. If you hear a problem, adjust the stage that is driving the level too high and test again.
Preview in Live Control Room and monitor the stream
Before starting the public stream, preview it in YouTube Live Control Room and listen for clean audio. Once live, keep monitoring audio quality rather than assuming the preview or encoder connection guarantees a clean program. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes previewing before going live, and its streaming guidance recommends monitoring the stream. Ideal for studio recording, live sound, streaming, and stage performance environments.
- Professional XLR/TRS Connectivity: Equipped with high-quality XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs and outputs, this rackmount compressor integrates easily with mixers, audio interfaces, PA systems, and studio gear. Provides clean signal routing and reliable performance for professional audio environments.
- Classic VCA Circuit for Enhanced Vocals: The VCA-based design improves vocal clarity, warmth, and presence—ideal for studio vocals, voiceovers, live singing, podcasting, and broadcast applications. Helps vocals sit smoothly and confidently at the front of the mix.
- LED Metering with Noise Gate Function: Features precise LED indicators for gain reduction, compression levels, and gate thresholds, giving clear visual feedback during setup. The built-in noise gate helps reduce ambient or background noise, ensuring cleaner audio in studio and live situations.
- Sidechain Insert for Frequency Control: The dedicated sidechain input supports frequency-based ducking, perfect for tightening bass, kick drums, and other low-end instruments. Adjustable attack and release controls allow detailed dynamic shaping for modern studio production and live performance.
For an always-on stream, repeat the test when you change the episode source, player gain, mixer or interface, or encoder configuration. This is a practical way to apply YouTube’s test-and-monitor guidance; YouTube does not prescribe a testing schedule for these changes.

An external audio limiter or a compressor/limiter may be useful if it fits the existing signal chain and testing shows it controls the problem. YouTube recognizes encoder workflows that use external audio hardware, but its cited guidance does not prescribe a processor, model, setting, or purchase. A processor also does not remove the need to check the episode and monitor the resulting stream.

- Enhanced Vocal Presence – Classic VCA Circuitry: Engineered for clarity, the classic VCA circuit enhances vocal warmth and detail. Bring vocals to the front of the mix with a rich, natural tone that stands out in any performance environment.
- Visual Monitoring – Precision LED Display & Noise Gate: Features independent LED indicators for gain reduction, compression, and gate thresholds. Fine-tune settings with confidence while reducing unwanted background noise using the built-in noise gate function.
- Side Chain Capability – Targeted Frequency Control: Includes a side chain insert for effective frequency ducking—ideal for tightening low-end instruments like bass or kick drums. Offers adjustable attack and release for responsive, natural-sounding compression across dynamic sources.
For a software-only chain, first verify the level through the existing playback and encoder route. Consider adding hardware only if its place in that route is clear and the improvement justifies the extra setup. The available YouTube guidance does not establish brand compatibility or a click-by-click limiter configuration.

- Distortion is present in the episode before streaming: The recording itself may already be clipped. Check a local playback of the source; downstream encoding cannot reliably restore audio that is distorted at its source.
- The local episode sounds clean, but the stream does not: Check the player gain and each stage between playback and the encoder, then test the full route again. The issue may be introduced after the source file.
- The encoder settings look correct, but distortion remains: Codec, sample rate, and bitrate describe delivery settings; they do not prove the incoming signal is clean. Listen to the preview and investigate the signal level separately.
- The stream was clean before a change: Retest after changing the episode, playback gain, audio hardware, or encoder configuration. A changed source or route can change the result.
- You want to add a limiter but are unsure of its settings: Do not treat an arbitrary threshold or preset as a YouTube requirement. The cited YouTube material does not provide a limiter recipe; confirm the processor fits the signal path and judge it with representative audio and monitoring.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps uploaded podcast episodes playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded audio and video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera. You still need to check that your source audio is clean: cloud playback does not repair a clipped recording.
