For each game, check whether it is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, whether a separate Windows edition is in your current PC Game Pass catalog, or whether the console version can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Then verify that the game supports the save or cross-progression behavior you need before retiring the console.
Start with the game’s entitlement, not the console you own
Xbox access is attached to a specific game, edition and delivery method. A console purchase by itself does not establish a native Windows entitlement. The Xbox app on PC may show a game because you own it, because it is included with a subscription, or because it is available to stream; those are different rights.

Digital ownership is especially important for Play Anywhere. The program covers participating digital games, not every title sold for Xbox. A game can also have separate Xbox and Windows editions with different store listings, features or save behavior. Treat each title as its own case rather than assuming that an Xbox library will appear wholesale on a PC.
There are three practical ways to continue:
- Install a Play Anywhere game: one participating digital purchase grants the Xbox and Windows PC versions.
- Obtain the PC edition: use the Xbox PC app to install a Windows version included in your current PC Game Pass catalog or buy that PC edition separately.
- Stream a supported console game: Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream some games you own, subject to the title, membership and country. Streaming is not ownership of an installable PC version.
Option 1: Install an Xbox Play Anywhere game
Play Anywhere is the closest thing to “buy once, play on Xbox and PC.” For a participating digital title, Xbox says one purchase provides play on Xbox consoles and Windows PC. The entitlement is tied to the listed game, so confirm participation before buying or assuming access.

How to check
- Open the game’s listing in the Microsoft Store or Xbox store while signed in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere mark in the product details. You can also use the official Play Anywhere game list.
- On the Windows computer, open the Xbox app for PC, sign in to the same account and search for the exact title and edition.
- Choose Install only when the listing shows that your account owns the Windows version. If it offers a purchase instead, stop and verify the title’s Play Anywhere status and edition.
A Play Anywhere label means the program covers that title; it does not mean that every Xbox purchase in your library qualifies. The program’s catalog is large—Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games in an August 28, 2025 update—but that dated count is not a guarantee that a particular game is included or that the catalog has not changed.
What you get and what you still need to check
The benefit is a native PC installation rather than a video stream, so the game runs on the Windows machine and uses the PC version’s files and settings. The program description alone does not establish identical graphics options, downloadable content treatment or universal save compatibility for every title. Check the game page and publisher information for those details.
Option 2: Get the Windows PC edition
If a title is not marked Play Anywhere, look for its Windows edition in the Xbox app for PC. Some PC games are included in the reader’s current PC Game Pass catalog. Others require a separate purchase of the PC edition, even when the Xbox console edition is already owned.
Find the right edition
- Launch the Xbox app on Windows and select Search.
- Enter the game’s full name, then open the result that identifies a Windows PC version. Watch for similarly named console, deluxe or remastered editions.
- Read the product panel. It will show Install when your account has an entitlement, a Game Pass install option when the title is included in your plan, or a price when a new PC purchase is required.
- Open the edition’s details before installing and confirm that the add-ons or expansion passes you use on Xbox are listed for PC. Entitlements can vary by edition.
PC Game Pass availability is a catalog decision, not a conversion of your console library. A game can leave the catalog, be available in one region but not another, or appear under a different edition. Check the live listing at the time you intend to play rather than relying on an old catalog screenshot or a past subscription benefit.

When a second purchase is unavoidable
If the Xbox app shows only a purchase button and the game has no Play Anywhere designation, the console entitlement does not establish a native PC entitlement. Buying the PC edition is the direct route. Compare the exact edition, included downloadable content and your preferred storefront before paying; do not buy a similarly named version without checking its platform field.
Option 3: Stream a supported Xbox game to the PC
Xbox Cloud Gaming can be useful when you own the console version but cannot justify buying a second PC copy or installing a large game. Xbox’s July 28, 2025 “Stream Your Own Game” announcement said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream more than 250 select games they owned through the Xbox PC app in the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) was supported at that time.
“Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to stream over 250 select games they own beyond the Game Pass catalog with the Xbox PC app, in the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) is supported, including recently added game titles such as Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Mafia: Definitive Edition, The Callisto Protocol, and more.”

That sentence describes a dated launch snapshot, not a permanent catalog or country list. The game must be one of the titles enabled for owned-game streaming, your country must support the service, and your membership must meet the current requirement. A title can be streamable even when it is not in the Game Pass catalog, but streaming it does not give you an installable Windows copy.

Check streaming eligibility
- In the Xbox app for PC, sign in to the account that owns the console game.
- Search for the title and look for a Cloud or streaming option rather than an install button.
- Confirm that the listing recognizes your Game Pass Ultimate membership and that the feature is offered in your country.
- Start a short session before making the console your only copy. Check that the correct edition loads and that your progress appears as expected.
The available catalog, supported countries and plan rules can change. The July 2025 figures should therefore be read as historical context, not as today’s entitlement guarantee.

A per-game checklist before you leave the console
Run this process for every game you care about. It prevents the most expensive mistake—assuming that a console license is a PC license—and gives you a chance to protect progress.
- Record the exact game and edition. Note whether it is a standard, deluxe, remastered or bundle listing. Add-ons may not follow the base game to another platform.
- Check Play Anywhere first. The mark on the official listing is the clearest sign that one participating digital purchase covers Xbox and Windows PC.
- Search the Xbox PC app. Determine whether the Windows edition is installable under your account, included in your current PC Game Pass catalog, or offered only as a paid purchase.
- Look for cloud streaming. If no native entitlement is available, see whether the owned console edition has a cloud option for your country and plan.
- Investigate saves and cross-progression. Read the current game listing or publisher support page for the exact editions you will use.
- Test before shutting down the Xbox. Install or stream the PC route, launch the game and verify that the expected profile and progress are present.
- Keep the Xbox and its saves available until the test succeeds. Do not delete local or cloud saves simply because the PC app displays the game.
Saves, achievements and progress: what is and is not guaranteed
Do not promise yourself that a save will transfer merely because a game is visible in the Xbox app. The official Play Anywhere material establishes a cross-device program, but it does not establish universal save compatibility for every game, edition or storefront. A console version and a separately purchased PC version may use different save systems.

- Does the publisher explicitly support cross-save, cross-progression or cloud-synchronized saves between Xbox and Windows PC?
- Are the Xbox and PC listings the same edition, or are they separate releases with different downloadable content?
- Does the game require you to sign in to an in-game account before progress appears?
- Are achievements and in-game purchases described as shared across the two versions?
If uninterrupted progress matters, leave the Xbox accessible while you test. Launch the PC version, load the oldest and newest saves you recognize, and play long enough to create a fresh save. Only after that confirmation should you consider removing the console or cleaning up local storage.

These numbers demonstrate the scale of the programs at those dates. They do not replace checking the live game listing, current plan benefits or your country’s support page.
Troubleshooting common switch-over problems
The Xbox app asks me to buy the game again
First confirm that you are signed in with the account that bought the digital title. Then compare the exact edition and check for the Play Anywhere mark. If the game is not in that program and is not included in your current PC Game Pass catalog, a separate PC purchase is the expected result rather than an installation error.
The game appears, but there is no install button
Open the listing details and identify whether the available action is cloud streaming, a subscription install or a purchase. A cloud-only option does not create a downloadable Windows license. If the listing is supposed to be Play Anywhere, recheck the title and edition against the official Play Anywhere listing.
Cloud play is unavailable
Owned-game streaming depends on the live title list, your country and the applicable membership. The July 2025 announcement’s 28-country figure is historical. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming availability and the game’s own listing instead of treating the old country count as universal.
My progress is missing on PC
Do not overwrite or delete the Xbox save. Confirm that you launched the intended edition, signed in to any required in-game account and followed the publisher’s cross-save instructions. If the game does not document cross-progression, the sources available here do not support assuming that the save can move between versions.
My downloadable content is missing
Compare the content list for the Xbox and PC editions. Bundles and expansions can be edition-specific even when the base game is available on both platforms. Contact the game’s publisher support team if the listing promises shared content but the PC installation does not show it.
Choosing the least disruptive route
- Choose Play Anywhere when the game carries the mark and you want a native PC installation without buying it twice.
- Choose the PC edition through Game Pass when the title is in your current catalog and you accept that access depends on the subscription and catalog status.
- Buy the PC edition when you need permanent native access and the game is neither Play Anywhere nor included in your plan.
- Choose cloud streaming when the title is supported, your location and membership qualify, and you prefer immediate access over a local installation.
- Delay the switch for a specific game when its save behavior is undocumented and your existing progress is valuable.
The reliable method is title-by-title verification: identify the edition, confirm the entitlement in the Xbox PC app, check streaming as an alternative, and test saves before giving up the console. That approach preserves access without assuming that Xbox ownership automatically includes Windows ownership.
