Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUsually, yes: if you already own a Steam game when its store listing is retired, it normally stays in your Steam library. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says, “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries. Those players will continue to be able to download, install, and launch the game.”
That access is not an unlimited preservation guarantee. A game can still depend on publisher servers, online authentication, a separate launcher, or an operating system that may eventually become incompatible. The safest approach is to confirm the entitlement, install and launch the game while it is still available, make and test a local backup, copy saves and custom files separately, and verify the modes you expect to use offline.

What delisting changes—and what it does not
A delisting removes the normal purchase option from the Steam store. It does not ordinarily remove the game from accounts that already own it. Existing owners generally retain the library entry and can download, install, and launch the retired title.

Access is also different from service availability. A single-player executable may continue to run after a store page disappears, while matchmaking, cloud features, account sign-in, leaderboards, or downloadable content may stop working if the publisher retires the related services. Steam’s Subscriber Agreement describes access to Steam content and services as subscriptions under the agreement; a purchase should not be treated as a legal promise of unrestricted, permanent access.
Do these checks before the game disappears from your library
Confirm the owning Steam account
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Search for the title and open its library page. Make sure you are signed in to the account that purchased or redeemed it.
- Check your purchase history if the game is not listed. Family-sharing access, a temporary access license, or a different Steam account can make a title appear to have vanished.
- If Steam shows the game as uninstalled, check the computer’s existing Steam library folders. Steam’s missing-games guidance notes that a title can appear uninstalled even when its files remain on disk.
A store search is not a reliable ownership test after delisting: a retired title may no longer have a public store page even though the account entitlement remains valid.
Install and launch once while online
If the game is still in your library, install it before making preservation plans. Launch it while connected to Steam so the client can validate the entitlement, complete any first-run setup, and download the current files and patches that Steam still serves.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the game’s store requirements and the publisher’s announcements to identify dependencies such as a separate launcher, account sign-in, anti-cheat component, or hosted server. Record those requirements with your backup notes. A copied executable cannot replace a service that the game contacts at startup.
Record the version and working configuration
Note the game’s installed build, launch options, graphics settings, controller configuration, and any required launcher or runtime. This is useful if a future update changes behavior or if you restore the files on another computer. Do not assume that a later Steam download will be byte-for-byte identical to the copy you make today.

How to back up a Steam game
Create Steam’s backup
- In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination with enough free space and let Steam finish copying the installation.
- Copy the completed backup to separate storage, such as another internal disk or an external drive.
Steam’s backup function applies only when the game’s complete download, installation, and patching process occurs through Steam. A title that relies on a third-party downloader or installer may not be restorable through this feature, even if Steam launches it. Valve recommends testing backups after creation rather than assuming that a successfully completed copy is usable.
Test the backup instead of merely storing it
Use a second Steam library folder or another computer when practical. Restore the backup, allow Steam to process the files, and launch the game. Check at least one saved game and every mode you care about. Testing reveals incomplete copies, missing installers, broken paths, and launcher or authentication requirements while the original installation is still available for comparison.

Keep two copies in different locations if the title matters to you. A second copy protects against a failed drive or accidental deletion, but it does not create a new Steam entitlement and cannot preserve a server that has been shut down.
Back up saves, settings, mods, and custom content separately
The Steam game backup is not a complete snapshot of everything you may want to keep. Valve notes that backups for Valve-created games omit saved games and custom content, and save locations for third-party games vary by title.
Identify the title-specific data
Look for the game’s save and configuration folders in the locations used by that title, which may include the user profile, a documents folder, an application-data folder, the game directory, or a publisher-specific launcher directory. The correct location is game-specific; copy the folder that actually contains your saves rather than relying on a generic path.

- Configuration files and key bindings
- Mods, mod loaders, and manually installed add-ons
- Screenshots, replays, maps, presets, and other user-created content
- Any license or configuration file that the game’s own documentation says is required
Keep the original folder structure in your archive and write down where each item came from. That makes restoration less error-prone than collecting files into one undifferentiated folder.
Understand Steam Cloud limits
Steam Cloud can synchronize supported data, but it is not a substitute for a local copy. Offline play delays synchronization, and reconnecting multiple devices after separate offline sessions can produce conflicts. Before changing computers or restoring files, decide which save is authoritative and preserve both versions until you have confirmed the result.
Can you play a delisted game offline?
Sometimes. Steam’s Offline Mode is intended to let you play without reconnecting to Steam each time, particularly for single-player games. It does not make an online-only game functional after its servers close, and Steam does not certify that every game works offline.
Test the exact mode you need
- With the game installed and working online, close games and downloads.
- In Steam, use the client’s option to restart or continue in Offline Mode.
- Launch the game and test the main menu, a new session, an existing save, and any local multiplayer mode you intend to use.
- Reconnect normally and confirm that your saves and settings remain intact.
Some games authenticate only at launch; others require a connection for menus, progression checks, downloadable content, or anti-cheat. Test after a fresh restart, not only after disconnecting the network while the game is already running.
What Offline Mode cannot preserve
- Dedicated servers, matchmaking, or hosted co-op
- Publisher account services and online entitlement checks
- Cloud synchronization while disconnected
- Web-based inventories, leaderboards, or content-delivery systems
- Authentication services that the executable contacts before showing the main menu
If a game is online-only, the practical preservation task is to keep any local files and saves that remain useful; no Steam setting can recreate the missing service.

How to avoid an unwanted update
Steam lets you configure a game to update only when it is launched, which can defer an automatic update. This can be useful when you want time to copy files or investigate a known compatibility change.
The setting is not a permanent version lock. Steam states that launching the game forces an update immediately, so selecting an update preference does not guarantee that an old build will remain launchable. If preserving a particular build matters, make a complete local copy before launching after a long period offline, and keep the copy separate from the active Steam installation.
Compare preservation methods by what they actually protect
| Method | Protects | Does not protect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the title in your Steam library | The account’s ability to request the game from Steam, assuming the entitlement remains valid | Publisher servers, authentication services, future operating-system compatibility | Always; verify the correct account before delisting |
| Install and launch online | A working installation and first-run validation while services are available | A guarantee that later launches will work without those services | Before the store listing or a required service disappears |
| Steam Backup game files | The Steam-managed game files when the full download, installation, and patching process occurs through Steam | Many saves and custom files; third-party installers; external services | After a complete install, followed by a restoration test |
| Separate save and custom-content copy | Saves, settings, mods, and user-created files that Steam Backup may omit | The game executable or a valid Steam entitlement | Whenever progress or custom work matters |
| Offline Mode test | Evidence that the tested build and mode can start without reconnecting to Steam each time | Online-only modes and shut-down servers | Before relying on the game during an outage or after retirement |
| Second storage copy | Protection against a failed or lost primary backup | DRM, account access, servers, and operating-system support | For titles you cannot easily replace |
What to do when the game is missing or will not start
The title is absent from Library
- Sign out and back in to the account that owns the game.
- Review purchase history and any license or key redemption record.
- Check installed Steam library folders for existing files that the client has not indexed.
- Consider whether the access was family sharing, a temporary beta license, or another non-permanent entitlement.
If Steam has revoked the activation key, a backup cannot restore the account license. Delisting alone, however, is not the same event as key revocation.
The game is listed but the Install button fails
- Check that Steam is online and that the selected library drive is available.
- Confirm that the operating system and free disk space still satisfy the game’s requirements.
- Look for a publisher launcher or separate installer that must be installed before the game can start.
- Try restoring a known-good local backup if the download service no longer supplies the files.
The game installs but will not launch
Separate local-file problems from external-service failures. Verify the game files through Steam, review launch options, and compare the installed runtime and launcher with the configuration that previously worked. If the title waits for a server or account sign-in, an intact installation may still be unable to proceed after that service has been retired.

Stop launching the game on every device until you identify the authoritative save. Check the title-specific save folder and Steam Cloud status, preserve all versions to separate folders, then restore one copy and test it. Offline sessions on more than one device can create divergent saves that Steam later asks you to resolve.

External services and operating-system compatibility
Preservation has three separate layers: the Steam entitlement, the local game files, and the services or platform needed to execute them. A successful backup addresses only part of that chain.
Publisher servers and authentication
Games that rely on hosted servers may lose multiplayer, account validation, inventories, or even startup access when the publisher retires those services. Valve advises publishers not to make promises they cannot keep and specifically warns users about hosted servers that customers may no longer be able to access. Check the publisher’s own retirement notice for the title’s dependencies.
Launchers, DRM, and third-party installers
A Steam shortcut can open a separate launcher or downloader. Steam’s Backup game files feature is designed for games whose complete process occurs through Steam; it may not capture a third-party installation workflow. Preserve any installer or account information that the publisher explicitly requires, while recognizing that this still does not guarantee future authentication.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOperating systems and hardware
A local copy is not automatically portable across operating systems or hardware generations. Drivers, runtimes, graphics APIs, processor support, and filesystem paths can change. Record the environment in which the game worked and test a restored copy on the operating system you expect to use. Do not interpret a successful file copy as proof of future compatibility.
A practical preservation checklist
- Verify the owning Steam account and purchase history.
- Confirm the game appears in Library even if its store page no longer does.
- Install and launch it online while Steam and any required publisher services are available.
- Record the working build, launch options, launcher, and online requirements.
- Create a Steam backup from Properties → Installed Files → Backup game files.
- Copy the finished backup to a second storage location.
- Copy saves, settings, mods, screenshots, and custom content separately.
- Test restoration and launch from the backup.
- Test Offline Mode with the specific single-player or local mode you need.
- Set a cautious update preference if you need time to preserve files, remembering that launching forces an update.
- Keep notes about server, launcher, authentication, and operating-system dependencies.
The most reliable result is a tested local installation plus separately preserved user data, with realistic expectations about anything that exists outside those files.
