Reduce direct sun and bring cushions indoors before extreme weather when practical. These steps slow fading and prevent mildew from feeding on trapped dirt, but no outdoor fabric is permanently immune to color loss or mildew.
Why outdoor cushions fade and develop mildew
Outdoor cushions face two separate problems. Ultraviolet light breaks down dyes over time, while moisture and organic debris create conditions where mildew can grow. A fabric can be marketed as UV resistant or mildew resistant and still become stained, musty or discolored if it remains dirty and damp.

Sunlight fades exposed surfaces
Direct sun is strongest on the top of a seat, the front edge of a back cushion and any area that stays uncovered. Rotation and shade reduce the hours any one section receives intense light. A cover or indoor storage during the brightest part of the season provides more protection than trying to restore color after it has been lost.
Mildew feeds on dirt left on the fabric
Sunbrella’s 2023 upholstery-care guide explains that its fabric does not promote mildew growth, but mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances left on the fabric. In practice, pollen, food residue, soil, bird droppings and body oils can become the food source on an otherwise mildew-resistant textile. Moisture from rain, condensation or an incomplete wash then allows the growth to spread.

This is why routine cleaning is different from mildew treatment. A dusty cushion usually needs brushing, rinsing and mild soap. A cushion with visible mildew, a persistent odor or embedded organic residue needs the fabric-specific procedure permitted by its care label.
Start with the care label and cushion construction
Outdoor fabrics and cushions are not interchangeable. Before applying any cleaner, find the sewn-in label, the furniture maker’s instructions or the cover manufacturer’s care sheet. The label may specify whether the cover can be removed, machine washed, spot cleaned, bleached or dried in a machine.
- Cover fabric: Identify the textile and any finish. A solution safe for one acrylic or polyester fabric may damage another fabric, coating or printed design.
- Fill and inner liner: Foam, fiberfill and waterproof liners can retain water even when the outer fabric feels dry. Do not assume a removable cover means the entire cushion is machine washable.
- Construction: Piping, zippers, glued seams and hook-and-loop fasteners may have separate instructions. Aggressive brushing or high heat can distort them.
- Color and pattern: Test an approved cleaner on a hidden area if the label allows spot testing. Stop if color transfers, lightens or bleeds.
If the label is missing, use the most conservative approach: remove loose debris, use mild soap and water, brush gently, rinse thoroughly and air dry. Do not use bleach, solvents, pressure washing or a washing machine until the maker confirms compatibility.
A maintenance schedule that prevents buildup

Adjust the frequency for your location. Trees, coastal air, pets, cooking near the seating area and frequent storms all add soil or moisture and call for more frequent light cleaning.
How to clean routine dirt without damaging the fabric
For Sunbrella upholstery, the manufacturer’s light-cleaning method is a useful example, but your own cushion label controls. The sequence is brush, rinse, wash gently, rinse again and air dry.

- Remove loose debris. Brush the surface with a soft-bristle brush or shake the cushion outdoors. Vacuum only with an upholstery attachment that will not pull the weave.
- Rinse first. Hose the cushion with clean water to lift loose soil. Avoid forcing water into seams with a concentrated jet.
- Prepare mild soapy water. Use the mild soap and water permitted by the care label. Do not mix cleaners, and measure any concentrate according to its label.
- Brush lightly. Work the solution into the surface with a soft-bristle brush. Use overlapping strokes rather than hard scrubbing, which can fuzz fibers or spread a stain.
- Rinse until residue is gone. Soap left in the fabric attracts dirt and can leave a film. Continue rinsing until the runoff is clear and the surface no longer feels slippery.
- Air dry completely. Stand or prop the cushion so air reaches both sides. Do not put it into a storage bin or cover it while the foam, seams or underside are still damp.
Blot oil, food and drink spills promptly rather than rubbing them deeper. For a stain that remains after the approved light-cleaning method, consult the fabric maker’s stain chart instead of escalating randomly to a stronger chemical.
How to treat visible mildew or a musty smell
First separate the cushion from clean textiles and inspect the label. Wear the protective equipment required by the cleaner’s label, work outdoors or in strong ventilation, and protect the deck, frame, plants and nearby fabrics from runoff.
Sunbrella’s specified bleach treatment
Sunbrella’s upholstery guide specifies a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of water for mildew treatment. Apply it to the affected area and allow it to soak for 15 minutes, then gently clean, rinse thoroughly and air dry. These quantities are instructions for compatible Sunbrella upholstery, not a universal recipe for every outdoor cushion.
- Confirm that the cushion’s label permits this treatment and that the fabric is compatible.
- Move the cushion away from non-compatible textiles, finished wood, metal that could discolor and vegetation.
- Mix only the amount needed, following the product labels and local environmental precautions. Never combine bleach with ammonia, acids or other cleaners.
- Apply to the affected fabric for the specified 15-minute period. Keep the surface from drying during the treatment if the care guide requires it.
- Gently brush the area, then rinse repeatedly until all bleach and soap have been removed.
- Air dry the entire cushion before returning it to furniture or storage. Inspect the underside and seams, where moisture often remains.

When not to keep escalating chemicals
Stop and seek the manufacturer’s service advice if mildew returns quickly, the odor remains after a complete cleaning and drying cycle, the filling is saturated, or seams have opened. Repeated strong treatments can weaken thread, alter color and damage coatings. If contamination has reached the inner cushion or the fabric is already badly degraded, replacement may be more sensible than repeated chemical use.

Drying and storage: the step people skip
Air drying is not a cosmetic extra. Water trapped in foam, welt cords, zippers and the underside can support odor and mildew after the visible surface appears dry.

- Stand cushions on edge or prop them on a clean rack rather than laying them on a wet deck.
- Open permitted zippers or remove approved covers so the inner surfaces can ventilate.
- Turn cushions during drying, especially thick seat pads.
- Do not seal cushions in plastic, a deck box or a fitted furniture cover until they are fully dry.
- Before seasonal storage, inspect for a cool or damp feel at seams and corners, not just the center of the fabric.
If rain is expected soon after cleaning, postpone storage or keep the cushions in a dry, ventilated room until the forecast allows complete drying. Reduce fading with exposure control and better fabric choices
Use shade and rotation
Place seating under a roof, pergola or shade sail where possible. Rotate reversible cushions and swap locations so one cushion does not receive all-day sun. Close an umbrella or use a breathable protective cover when the furniture is not in use; avoid trapping moisture under a cover.
Understand what “fade resistant” means
Sunbrella says its outdoor cushion fabrics are UV and fade resistant because stable dye is integrated through the fibers. It also describes the fabrics as water resistant and resistant to mold and mildew. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not an independent comparative test and not a promise that a cushion will never fade or develop mildew. When comparing fabrics, ask how the color is incorporated, what UV exposure the maker covers, and whether the stated resistance applies to the fabric only or to the finished cushion assembly. A water-resistant face does not make wet foam harmless, and mildew resistance does not eliminate the need to remove dirt.

Check the warranty rather than assuming lifetime performance
Sunbrella lists a five-year limited warranty for upholstery fabrics covering loss of strength or color caused by normal usage and exposure. Verify the current warranty for the exact product, region and exclusions before relying on it; a warranty is not a guarantee against stains, misuse, improper cleaning or every form of fading.

Routine dirt, a small spill or an isolated mildew mark usually calls for cleaning, not replacement. Consider a replacement cushion or cover when one or more of these conditions apply:
- The fabric has widespread, irreversible color loss that remains after approved cleaning.
- The foam or inner liner smells musty after complete drying, indicating contamination beyond the cover.
- Seams, zippers or piping are failing and allow water into the fill.
- The cushion no longer fits its frame or has permanently collapsed.
- The maker’s care instructions prohibit the treatment needed for the existing damage.
For a replacement, compare UV and fade-resistance claims, water and mildew-resistance claims, permitted cleaning methods, cushion dimensions, construction, replacement-cover availability and the stated warranty. A fabric that cannot tolerate the cleaning routine you are willing to perform may be a poor fit even if its color looks attractive in the showroom. Replacement cushions made with an outdoor upholstery fabric such as Sunbrella can be an option when a cushion is irreparably faded or damaged, but buying new cushions is not necessary for ordinary maintenance.
Troubleshooting common problems
The cushion looks clean but still smells musty
Check the underside, zipper area, piping and inner liner for retained moisture. Repeat only the approved cleaning process, rinse thoroughly and dry with air circulation on all sides. If odor persists after the cushion is completely dry, ask the manufacturer whether the fill can be treated or replaced.

Mildew returns after a few days
Look for the source rather than applying stronger chemicals repeatedly: a damp storage box, a shaded cushion that never dries, contaminated foam, nearby soil or a cover that blocks ventilation. Correct the moisture problem, then clean according to the label.

A cleaner left a pale patch
Stop using that product. The patch may be chemical damage or dye loss rather than a removable stain. Rinse if the product label directs you to do so, document the fabric and cleaner, and contact the cushion maker.
The cushion faded unevenly
Uneven exposure is common when one side faces the sun or remains under a cover. Rotate cushions, add shade and avoid trying to recolor them with household dye or paint unless the fabric maker specifically approves the product.
Can I pressure-wash outdoor cushions?
Do not assume so. A pressure stream can drive water and dirt into seams, damage coatings and deform foam. Use the low-force, label-approved rinse method instead.
A practical checklist for every season
- Read and photograph the care label before the first cleaning.
- Brush or shake off loose debris regularly.
- Rinse or spot-clean dirt before it is worked into the weave.
- Use only the soap, stain remover or bleach method the label permits.
- Rinse until no cleaner remains.
- Dry every surface, seam and the inner fill before covering or storing.
- Rotate cushions and increase shade during periods of intense sun.
- Bring cushions indoors before extreme weather when practical.
- Inspect seams, zippers, underside panels and storage areas for moisture.
- Replace irreparably faded, contaminated or structurally damaged components rather than repeatedly using stronger chemicals.
