You can’t keep OBS streaming after you sign out of Windows: signing out ends your user session and closes its applications, including OBS. If you only need to secure the screen while you step away, press Windows key + L to lock the PC instead. Locking leaves applications open, but it does not guarantee OBS will keep rendering; test your exact setup before relying on it.
Sign out, lock, and switch user are different

Microsoft documents these distinctions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its User Account Access in Windows guidance. The lock-screen and switched-user GPU behavior is less certain: an OBS forum response dated March 25, 2021, reports that Windows can remove GPU access in those circumstances, preventing OBS from rendering. That is a community report, not a current Microsoft guarantee, and behavior can vary by hardware, driver, OBS version, sources, and Windows build.

If you only need to step away, lock Windows
- Save any work that is not part of OBS.
- Press Windows key + L. This locks the screen without signing out, leaving OBS and other applications open in your session.
- After returning, check OBS to confirm the stream is still active and producing output. Do not assume the picture continued just because OBS remained open.
If you plan to use Switch user, apply the same caution: leaving the original session open does not prove that OBS can continue rendering while another account is active.

- Set up the same OBS scene, sources, graphics hardware, and Windows account you intend to use for the real broadcast.
- Start a private or unlisted YouTube test stream, then lock Windows with Windows key + L. If you need to switch accounts, test that separately.
- Check the viewer-side feed and the stream state in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the video and audio continue, not just that OBS still appears open after you return.
- If output fails, do not treat a different stream key or a bitrate adjustment as a fix for a closed or non-rendering Windows session. For a legitimate interruption, check the broadcast state in YouTube Live Control Room and review OBS output and logs.
Why the stream key cannot keep OBS alive
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; it does not run the encoder. OBS runs as an application in your Windows user session, and OBS’s active-output warning says, “OBS is still currently active. All streams/recordings will be shut down.” Signing out closes that application, so YouTube cannot receive a continuing feed from it.

OBS also connects directly from your computer to YouTube rather than sending video through OBS servers. A stable internet connection and suitable bitrate can help with network-related dropped frames, but they cannot preserve a Windows session after sign-out. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls concern starting or stopping a broadcast from the encoder; they do not keep OBS running after Windows closes it.
If OBS must run unattended
Keeping OBS on a continuously active, dedicated streaming environment is a different setup from signing out of your everyday Windows account. It needs its own testing and operational monitoring; neither switching users nor leaving a stream key configured makes it unattended by itself.
