To keep OBS streaming overnight, prevent the Windows PC from sleeping while it is plugged in, enable OBS automatic reconnect for supported network interruptions, and plan separately for power cuts. A computer UPS can provide limited backup, but its runtime depends on the wattage of the PC and network equipment connected to it. These steps reduce avoidable interruptions; they cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
1. Keep the Windows PC awake while plugged in
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the plugged-in sleep timeout long enough that the PC will not sleep during the entire stream. Microsoft describes sleep as a low-power state in which the processor is not executing code, so OBS cannot continue streaming while the computer sleeps. See Microsoft’s explanation of sleep.
- Screen-off and sleep are separate settings. You can let the display turn off if you do not need to watch it, while leaving the plugged-in sleep timeout configured to keep the PC awake. See Microsoft’s Windows power and sleep guidance.
If you are using a laptop
Check the lid-close action before leaving the stream unattended. Laptops may sleep when the lid closes; Microsoft directs users to Power Options to change lid behavior. Do not close the lid or press the power button unless you have verified the configured action and confirmed its effect on streaming.
2. Turn on OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and find the automatic reconnect controls. Enable automatic reconnect, then set the retry delay and maximum retries according to how long you want OBS to keep attempting recovery. OBS documents these controls in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.
Automatic reconnect can help after supported output or network disconnections. It does not stop Windows from sleeping, restart a PC that loses power, or guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect. The retry limit also matters: if OBS exhausts its attempts, you may need to intervene.

3. Plan for power cuts separately
OBS reconnect and a UPS solve different problems. OBS may recover from some network interruptions; a computer UPS can keep connected equipment powered during a power interruption for a limited, load-dependent time. Schneider Electric recommends sizing a UPS above the total watt load of connected devices and notes that adding equipment reduces runtime. See its UPS sizing and runtime guidance.
- Count the PC and the network device needed for the stream, such as the router, when estimating the essential load.
- Compare the UPS’s supported load and estimated battery runtime at that load with the backup time you actually need.
- Do not assume an ordinary UPS will keep a PC streaming all night. The required capacity depends on your equipment’s wattage and the desired runtime.
Without your PC and network equipment’s measured or specified wattage, there is no sound basis for recommending a particular UPS capacity or runtime.

4. Test the overnight setup before relying on it
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test stream.
- Confirm the correct OBS scene, video and audio, and verify the stream appears as expected on YouTube.
- Use the display-off setting you plan to use overnight and confirm the PC remains awake.
- Check that OBS automatic reconnect is enabled and review its retry delay and maximum retries.
- If using a UPS, check the load and runtime estimate for the PC and essential network equipment together.
A test can expose configuration problems, but it cannot establish how your internet service or local power will behave on a later night.
5. Optional: launch OBS and start streaming automatically
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter. Its Windows automation guidance says to set the shortcut or task’s Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. See the OBS launch parameters and Windows automatic-start guidance.

Automatic launch is an advanced convenience, not a substitute for testing. The parameter does not resolve Windows login requirements, network problems, power loss, or service-side failures. Verify the complete sequence in advance rather than assuming OBS will start and stream successfully while unattended.

- Windows sleeps: OBS cannot keep streaming while the processor is suspended. Check the plugged-in sleep timeout and laptop lid behavior.
- Network drops: OBS automatic reconnect may recover supported disconnections, subject to its retry settings and YouTube accepting the reconnect.
- Power fails: A UPS only helps for its available runtime at the connected load; it is not an unlimited backup.
- OBS does not start unattended: Check the Windows task or shortcut setup, including its working directory, login conditions, and the launch parameter. Test it while you can observe the result.
- Audio or scene is wrong: Verify the intended OBS scene and audio during the low-risk test stream, before leaving the PC unattended.
