How to Keep Network Automation From Repeating a Bad Fix

Stop a faulty remediation from coming back by treating network configuration as a reviewed, version-controlled desired state—not as a command that can be retried indefinitely. Validate syntax and policy before deployment, test the change in staging or a representative virtual environment, serialize writers, preserve a known-good checkpoint, and verify both configuration and service health afterward. If the fix fails, halt retries, restore the last known-good state through the same controlled pipeline, and reconcile any emergency manual change back into the source of truth.

Why automation repeats a bad fix

Most remediation loops have two different realities: the desired state stored in a repository or controller, and the actual state running on devices and services. A loop compares them and tries to make reality match the stored intent. If the stored intent contains a faulty route, ACL, VLAN, interface setting, or policy, every reconciliation cycle can put the same defect back after an operator removes it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A second failure mode is an unguarded retry. The automation sees a command failure or an unhealthy check, runs the same action again, and never changes the input that caused the failure. A third is competing writers: a pipeline, controller, engineer at a CLI, and a GUI can each overwrite the others before anyone has a stable baseline. NETCONF’s specification explains the reason for serialization plainly: “A lock should be acquired to prevent simultaneous updates from multiple sources.” (IETF RFC 4741, Appendix D.1.1)

The remedy is a controlled change cycle. Every change should have an owner, a reviewable diff, pre-change checks, a safe test, a protected deployment, post-change verification, and a recovery path that also updates desired state. The exact lock, checkpoint, and rollback guarantees depend on the platform and must be confirmed for the devices you operate.

The seven-part control sequence

1. Record the intended state in version control

Store the configuration or declarative intent, the applicable policy, and the target inventory in a version-controlled repository. A commit should identify who owns the change, which devices or services are affected, and why the change is being made. AWS recommends version control for network-protection templates and describes using consistent standards and automated checks in a delivery pipeline (AWS Security Pillar, SEC05-BP04). Cisco’s Network as Code guidance likewise treats a Git repository as the desired-state source, giving teams review history and a recoverable record (Cisco, “Automate Network Infrastructure using Network as Code”).

Keep the last known-good revision identifiable. A tag, release record, or immutable artifact should point to the exact configuration that was deployed and verified, not merely to the latest branch tip. Separate environment or region data from reusable policy where possible, so a test change cannot silently expand to unrelated production targets.

  • Include device or service identifiers and the intended blast radius.
  • Record dependencies such as address pools, VLANs, routing peers, certificates, and maintenance windows.
  • Require an owner and reviewer before a change can enter the deployment queue.
  • Retain the previous verified revision as the rollback candidate.

2. Review the exact diff before execution

A reviewer should inspect the rendered change that the automation will send, not only the source file. A plan or diff must make unexpected deletions, an access rule broadened beyond its request, a route moved to the wrong table, or a change that touches extra devices obvious. Render templates with the same variables, inventory, and credentials-selection logic used in deployment; otherwise the reviewed text may not be the text applied.

Require an explicit approval when scope changes. For example, adding one VLAN should not also remove an existing VLAN because a list was replaced rather than merged. A diff review is also where you detect stale inventory, a wrong region, an empty variable, or a default that would target every device.

3. Run syntax, schema, and policy validation

Reject invalid input before it reaches a device. Syntax and schema checks catch malformed fields, unsupported values, missing references, and type errors. Semantic checks catch configurations that are syntactically valid but unsafe: duplicate VLAN IDs, overlapping IP subnets, an undefined next hop, an ACL that leaves a required service unreachable, or a route that creates an unintended loop. Cisco’s guidance specifically cites checks such as unique VLAN IDs and preventing overlapping subnets (Cisco Network as Code guidance).

Policy checks should be deterministic and fail closed. Examples include requiring encrypted management, forbidding a public management interface, limiting permitted prefixes, and ensuring every change names an owner and ticket. Run the checks on the generated candidate configuration as well as on source files. A change that fails validation must be marked failed and removed from the retry queue; retrying unchanged input only amplifies the defect.

4. Test where production risk is limited

Use a staging network, a virtual lab, or a platform-specific pre-change analysis before touching production. AWS recommends staging environments and a CI/CD approach for automated network protection (AWS SEC05-BP04). Cisco describes testing against a virtual environment and validating the resulting configuration and health after deployment (Cisco Network as Code guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the dependency that motivated the fix, not only whether the API accepted the payload. A routing change needs reachability and path checks; a firewall change needs permitted and denied-flow tests; a DNS change needs resolution from affected networks; a load-balancer change needs backend health and an application request. A lab that lacks the real peer, policy service, or traffic pattern cannot prove production equivalence, so document which dependencies are represented and which are not.

For large or risky changes, qualify progressively: validate in a virtual environment, deploy to a small production slice, observe, and then expand. Google Cloud’s Telecom Network Automation overview describes versioned GitOps reconciliation, pre-submit checks, and staged qualification as controls against intent drift and unsafe changes (Google Cloud Telecom Network Automation overview).

5. Serialize writers and preserve a checkpoint

Before applying a change, prevent another actor from modifying the same configuration. Use the device’s configuration lock, a controller’s lease, or a pipeline-level concurrency key when available. The lock should cover the period in which you capture the baseline, apply the candidate, and perform the immediate verification. Release it on success or through a timeout and operator-reviewed recovery path.

Capture a rollback point before deployment. That can be a device checkpoint, a controller revision, or the previously verified repository artifact. NETCONF describes a sequence involving configuration locking, checkpointing, validation, testing, and rollback-on-error capability, but these features are optional capabilities and are not identical on every device (IETF RFC 6241). Do not advertise transactional rollback unless the target device and protocol actually support it.

6. Deploy, then verify behavior

A successful API response or command exit code proves only that the platform accepted a request. After deployment, compare the actual running configuration with the intended rendered state and run operational checks. AWS’s NetDevOps guidance recommends testing and staging, checking health, and rolling back when problems appear (AWS, “NetDevOps: A modern approach to AWS networking deployments”).

Verification should include both control-plane and service-level evidence:

  • Configuration: confirm the expected interfaces, VLANs, routes, policies, and references are present, with no unrelated changes.
  • Reachability: test the paths, ports, and protocols the change was intended to restore or protect.
  • Health: inspect interface state, routing adjacencies, tunnel status, load-balancer backends, error counters, latency, and relevant service probes.
  • Safety: confirm that management access, required monitoring, and critical peerings remain available.

Set a verification window appropriate to the change. Some failures appear only after traffic shifts, a routing timer expires, or a dependent service reloads. Keep the deployment in a pending state until required checks pass; do not mark it successful merely because the first read-back matched.

7. Recover and reconcile when verification fails

When a check fails, stop the remediation loop before it applies the same candidate again. Restore the known-good revision through the validated deployment path, using the device checkpoint or previously verified artifact where supported. Then investigate the failed assumption—an incomplete dependency model, an incorrect variable, a platform quirk, or a policy conflict—before proposing a new fix.

Rollback is itself a change and must pass the same syntax, semantic, policy, and testing gates as a forward deployment. Cisco recommends subjecting rollback to the same validation and testing process (Cisco Network as Code guidance). If the platform offers rollback-on-error, verify how it behaves on connection loss, partial commits, and dependent services; a protocol capability does not guarantee that every vendor implementation provides an atomic restoration.

Make rollback stop the loop, not just the device

Reverting a device while leaving the faulty desired state in Git creates a delayed repeat. The next reconciliation sees the device as drifted and reinstalls the bad fix. Treat recovery as two linked actions: restore the running system and correct the intent that automation will use next.

  1. Pause or quarantine the failed deployment and disable automatic retries for that candidate.
  2. Restore the last verified configuration through the controlled pipeline or a supported checkpoint.
  3. Record the observed failure and the verification evidence.
  4. Revert or amend the source-of-truth change so it describes the restored state, or replace it with a corrected candidate.
  5. Run the full validation and safe-test sequence before resuming reconciliation.
  6. Re-enable automation only after the actual state and desired state agree.

Use an explicit failure state in the controller—such as “blocked pending review”—rather than allowing a health check to trigger an endless cycle. Preserve logs, rendered payloads, device responses, and pre/post health data so the next review can reproduce what happened.

Handle emergency manual repairs without creating drift

Manual CLI or GUI action is sometimes necessary to restore access or stop an outage. The danger comes afterward: if the repository still contains the old intent, reconciliation can erase the repair. Cisco’s guidance calls for resynchronizing the source of truth after emergency GUI or CLI operations (Cisco Network as Code guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a short, controlled procedure:

  1. Declare the emergency change and record the exact commands or settings, target, time, and operator.
  2. Place the affected service or device in a protected state so normal reconciliation cannot immediately overwrite it.
  3. Capture the resulting running configuration and operational evidence.
  4. Translate the emergency state into the repository’s format, or deliberately revert it if it was only a temporary measure.
  5. Submit the synchronized state for review and run validation and testing.
  6. Remove the protection only after the controller reports no unexplained drift.

Do not hide a manual repair by editing history without a record. The goal is not to prohibit emergency access; it is to ensure that the next automated run has the same intent as the state operators decided to keep.

Choose controls by capability, not by product label

Different environments expose different safeguards. Compare an implementation against the questions below rather than assuming that a “declarative” or “transactional” label guarantees safety.

Control area What to confirm If it is missing
Pre-apply validation Can the system check syntax, schema, references, and semantic policy before touching a device? Build equivalent checks into CI and block deployment on failure.
Staging or virtual testing Can the candidate be exercised with the relevant peers, traffic, and dependencies? Use a smaller production slice and explicit risk approval; document unrepresented dependencies.
Serialization Is there a device lock, controller lease, or pipeline concurrency control? Implement a single-writer queue and prevent overlapping jobs by inventory and service.
Checkpoint and rollback Does the actual device support a checkpoint or rollback-on-error, and what happens on partial failure? Store and redeploy the last verified artifact through the normal gates.
Post-change verification Are both intended configuration and service health measured? Add read-back, reachability, and application-level probes before declaring success.
Drift reconciliation Do manual changes update desired state before the next reconciliation cycle? Quarantine the resource, synchronize the repository, then resume automation.

NETCONF’s lock, validate, test, and rollback mechanisms are protocol capabilities, not a promise that all devices expose every function. Read the advertised capabilities of each target and test failure behavior in a non-production environment (RFC 6241). The locking rationale and protection sequence are also described in RFC 4741.

Failure scenarios and the correct response

The same job retries after a policy failure

Mark the candidate permanently failed for that revision, surface the policy message to the owner, and require a new commit. Do not increase the retry count or alter only the timeout; the input is still invalid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device accepted the change but traffic broke

Freeze further reconciliation, run service-level checks to identify the failed dependency, and restore the last verified state. Compare the rendered candidate with the actual read-back to detect partial application before deciding whether a checkpoint is safe to use.

An operator fixed the issue manually, then automation reverted it

Pause the controller, capture the manual state, and reconcile the repository to the decision you want to keep. Validate that state before releasing the resource. This is intent drift, not a reason to disable all automation.

Two pipelines changed the same device

Use a shared lock or inventory-based concurrency key, cancel the later job, and review both diffs against one baseline. Re-run the approved candidate only after the lock holder releases the resource and the actual configuration has been re-read.

Rollback itself fails

Keep the device or service isolated from further automated writes, preserve the failed rollback evidence, and use the platform’s documented recovery method or a supervised manual repair. Once access and health are restored, encode the resulting state in the source of truth and test a future rollback path before the next production change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pre-deployment and recovery checklist

  • Is the intended state committed, reviewed, and tied to an owner and target inventory?
  • Does the rendered diff contain only the requested scope?
  • Have syntax, schema, references, uniqueness, overlap, and policy checks passed?
  • Was the dependency and behavior test run in staging, a virtual environment, or a documented limited slice?
  • Is a single writer enforced for the affected resources?
  • Is a known-good checkpoint or immutable artifact available?
  • Are rollback steps validated for the actual device capabilities?
  • Do post-change checks cover configuration, reachability, and service health?
  • Will a failed candidate be quarantined instead of retried unchanged?
  • After any manual intervention, has desired state been synchronized and revalidated?

This workflow cannot guarantee that a network will never fail, and staging cannot reproduce every production condition. It does make a bad fix visible, limits how far it can spread, prevents blind repetition, and gives operators a tested path back to a known-good state.
