Keep a structured, access-controlled record that connects each AI agent action to the request that triggered it, the identities and policies involved, the tool and target, any approval, and the outcome. Protect the record from alteration, limit sensitive data, and set retention and review rules for the system’s purpose and jurisdiction. A log can help reconstruct an event; by itself, it does not prove an action was lawful, authorized, complete, or admissible as evidence.
What an AI agent audit trail should capture
A transcript of the conversation is not an audit trail. It may show what a user and agent said, but fail to show whether the agent called a tool, what resource it targeted, which permissions applied, or what changed. Record structured events at the point where the agent requests or executes an action, then correlate them with the result reported by the tool or external system.

- When and where: event timestamp, duration, workflow or session ID, correlation ID, and source system. Use a consistent time standard across systems.
- Who or what acted: authenticated user or service identity, agent identity and version, and relevant delegation chain.
- What context governed the action: relevant model and configuration versions, policy version, and dataset or retrieved-document version where they materially affect the decision.
- What was requested and attempted: action, tool, target resource, normalized parameters, execution decision, and approval state.
- What happened: relevant input and output or controlled content references, state changes, result, errors, retries, and duration.
- Whether the record is complete: logging-system health, dropped-event indicators, and known gaps. An absent event should not silently be treated as proof that no action occurred.
Singapore’s government guidance on securing AI systems recommends monitoring and logging models, data stores, memory, agents, tools, MCP interactions, agent communications, external actions, and relevant systems. Its example event fields include actions, inputs and outputs, internal state changes, errors, timestamps, duration, and contextual identifiers. The right scope depends on the system and the actions it can take.

How to build the logging process
1. Define scope, risk, and ownership
Inventory agents, tools, integrations, data sources, and the actions each can perform. Identify which actions are destructive, financial, administrative, sensitive, or externally visible, and which user or service identities can authorize them. Assign named owners for log access, review, retention, and incident exports. NIST guidance notes that system-level logs may lack the application detail needed to explain an action; add application-level records where that detail matters.
2. Emit correlated events at action boundaries
Write an event when the agent proposes or requests an action, when policy or approval controls decide whether it may proceed, when execution occurs, and when the tool reports the result. Correlation identifiers should link these events without relying on a shared transcript or a person matching timestamps by hand. Include delegated subtasks and retries so the trail reflects the full workflow.
Capture enough context to reconstruct what happened, but do not copy secrets or full sensitive payloads into broadly accessible logs by default. Where practical, use redaction or a protected reference to the underlying content, encrypt records, restrict access by role, and audit access to sensitive entries. NIST warns that audit records can themselves contain disclosure-sensitive personal information.

- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
3. Bind approval to the exact action
For high-impact actions, separate the agent’s decision from the component that authorizes execution. OWASP guidance recommends an independent policy or execution component that validates scope, privilege, and approval. Bind approval to the actor, tool, target, normalized parameters, time, and expiry. An approval for one target or set of parameters should not be reusable for a materially different action.
Set a clear failure rule: if required policy lookup, approval validation, risk classification, or audit logging is unavailable, block the high-impact action rather than treating the missing control as permission to proceed. Apply this to the execution path, not just to a warning displayed in a monitoring dashboard.
4. Protect integrity and preserve lifecycle history
Limit who can read, modify, export, or delete records; separate routine log administration from review access where practical. NIST identifies digital signatures and write-once devices as possible integrity controls. The UK government’s AI assurance guidance recommends write-once, read-many (WORM) storage for critical systems with compliance requirements. These are options to assess, not guarantees that a particular setup will be accepted as legal evidence.

5. Set retention and review rules
For each system and record class, document the purpose of keeping the logs, applicable legal or regulatory requirements, who may authorize deletion, and how legal holds or investigations affect normal deletion. The appropriate period can differ by jurisdiction, sector, record type, and purpose; consult counsel on rules that apply to areas such as health, finance, employment, data protection, and litigation.
Choose review methods according to risk and event volume. Use scheduled reviews, event-triggered investigation, or automated analysis as appropriate, and define who triages alerts and who may export records. NIST notes that manual real-time review is generally impractical for large systems, so automated filtering and analysis can help prioritize attention.

6. Test for missing events and unsafe failures
Exercise ordinary and exceptional paths before relying on the trail in an incident. Verify that a reviewer can search by identity, application, time, and workflow, and export a readable package. Compare the action system’s records with the log store to detect missing boundaries.
- Run permitted, denied, expired-approval, error, retry, delegated-task, and external-action scenarios.
- Confirm that tool outcomes and state changes are recorded, not just the agent’s intended action.
- Simulate logging and approval-service outages; verify that actions requiring fail-closed controls are blocked.
- Check that timestamps, correlation IDs, identity fields, and version details remain usable across connected systems.
- Test an incident export, including its source systems and integrity checks, with the people who would handle a real review.
How long should AI agent logs be kept?
There is no universal retention period for every AI agent. Under Article 19 of the EU AI Act, providers must keep automatically generated logs that are under their control for a period appropriate to the intended purpose of a high-risk AI system, with a baseline of at least six months unless applicable Union or national law provides otherwise. That provision is not a global rule for every organization or AI tool. The European Commission AI Act Service Desk describes its explanatory summaries as non-binding; consult the regulation and qualified counsel for the applicable requirements.

Retention should be long enough to support the documented purpose and required reviews, but not indefinite by default. NIST guidance places retention decisions with system managers and emphasizes timely review. Set a schedule for deletion or anonymization where appropriate, and make the process pause or change when a valid legal hold applies.

What logs can and cannot establish in a review
A well-correlated trail can help investigators determine which identity initiated a workflow, what request and policy decision were involved, which tool and target were used, whether approval occurred, what result or error was recorded, and what system version was active. Preserve source records and chain-of-custody information under counsel’s direction when an investigation or litigation is anticipated. NIST specifically flags legal counsel where audit records may be used as evidence.
Logs do not establish, on their own, that a model’s output was true, that data processing was lawful, that an action was authorized under every applicable rule, or that a record will be admissible in court. Their usefulness depends on reliable event coverage, protected integrity, understandable context, and appropriate handling of the records.
The records also create privacy and confidentiality risk. NIST’s agentic identity project comment summary notes that linked identifiers and agent activity can expose sensitive information and enable profiling, while also recognizing the need to balance attribution, accountability, and privacy. Limit collection to what the review purpose requires, and control access to the resulting trail.
