If Fortnite starts hitching, stuttering, losing frame rate, showing graphical faults, or crashing after a major update, work through the fixes in this order: confirm your PC still meets Epic’s current requirements, update or reinstall the graphics driver, verify the game files, switch to Performance Mode or lower-quality settings, then check background load, heat, and Windows power settings. Reinstalling the game or resetting configuration files comes later, after these less disruptive checks.

This guide is for the Windows PC version. Epic’s post-update instructions cited here do not establish equivalent procedures for console or mobile versions.

First identify what changed

Different symptoms point to different checks. Note what you see before changing settings, because a repeatable pattern makes troubleshooting faster.

  • Low FPS: the frame-rate counter stays lower than before, even when the game is otherwise responsive.
  • Hitching or stutter: the game pauses briefly or feels uneven while moving, turning, or loading an area.
  • Graphical problem: textures, resolution, lighting, or other visual elements look wrong without necessarily causing a crash.
  • Crash: Fortnite closes, freezes, or returns you to the desktop.
  • Time-dependent slowdown: the game is acceptable at first, then deteriorates after a long session; heat or airflow becomes more relevant in this case.

Write down whether the problem began immediately after the update, whether it affects every mode, and whether lowering settings changes it. Do not apply console or phone configuration advice to a PC installation unless Epic publishes a platform-specific equivalent.

Check your PC against Epic’s current requirements

Start with the hardware and operating-system baseline on Epic’s live Fortnite requirements page. Requirements can change, so treat the figures below as the values Epic lists in the cited support material rather than permanent guarantees.

Tier Operating system Memory Graphics Processor Storage detail
Minimum Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 Intel Core i3-3225 or equivalent Not stated on the cited requirements summary (Epic Games Support)
Recommended Windows 10 or Windows 11 64-bit 16 GB or more RAM GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM Core i5-7300U, Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent NVMe SSD listed among the recommended specifications (Epic Games Support)
Epic Quality presets Higher than the tiers shown above Not stated in the cited summary Not stated in the cited summary Not stated in the cited summary Not stated in the cited summary

A PC that only meets the minimum tier may launch Fortnite but still fail to maintain high settings or a stable frame rate after an update. Compare the actual parts in your machine, not just the model name on a laptop sticker. In Windows, you can see the processor and installed memory under Settings > System > About; GPU details are available under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and in Task Manager’s Performance tab.

If your hardware is below the minimum, settings changes may make the game more usable, but no software step can turn it into a system that meets the recommended tier.

Update or reinstall the graphics driver

Epic’s post-update guidance says that extreme hitching or crashing may be due to the graphics driver. That is a possible cause, not a diagnosis for every affected PC.

  1. Identify whether the PC uses integrated Intel graphics, an AMD GPU, or an NVIDIA GPU. Check Device Manager > Display adapters or Task Manager’s Performance tab.
  2. Open the GPU maker’s official driver-download page and select the exact model and Windows version. Avoid selecting a similar-looking model by guesswork.
  3. Install the current driver, restart Windows, and test the same Fortnite mode in which the problem appeared.
  4. If the issue began immediately after a driver update or a normal update did not help, run the manufacturer’s installer again and choose its clean-install or reset option when offered. This removes old driver components before installing the new package.

Keep a note of the driver version that worked and the version that failed. That record helps if a later rollback becomes necessary. Do not infer that a driver update will improve every low-FPS case: a CPU, thermal, storage, or game-setting bottleneck can remain unchanged.

Verify Fortnite’s files before reinstalling anything

Corrupted or incomplete files can produce crashes, unusual graphics, and performance problems after a large patch. Epic puts file verification early in its troubleshooting sequence.

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Find Fortnite, open its three-dot or options menu, and choose Manage.
  4. Select Verify.
  5. Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish. It may take several minutes, depending on the drive and the amount of data checked.
  6. Launch Fortnite and reproduce the original symptom before changing several other settings.

Verification checks the installed files; it does not replace a graphics driver, add missing Windows updates, or upgrade hardware. If the launcher cannot complete the operation, close other disk-heavy programs, confirm that the drive has free space, restart the launcher, and run the verification again.

Use Performance Mode when frame rate or stutter is the priority

Epic recommends Performance Mode, labeled Lower Graphical Fidelity, for low frame rates. It reduces visual fidelity to reduce rendering work and can make frame delivery more consistent on hardware near or below the recommended tier.

  1. Start Fortnite and open the game’s Settings.
  2. Open the Video or graphics section and locate the rendering mode option.
  3. Select Performance Mode (Lower Graphical Fidelity).
  4. Apply the change and restart Fortnite when prompted or instructed by the game.
  5. Play the same map or mode for several minutes and compare smoothness, not only the highest number shown by an FPS counter.

Performance Mode is a trade-off: it may improve frame-rate stability while making geometry, lighting, and other details look less refined. If visual quality is more important and your PC has adequate headroom, use the higher-fidelity renderer and tune individual settings instead.

Reset graphics to a known baseline

For certain graphical faults, Epic suggests starting with a Low quality preset and 100% 3D Resolution, then increasing quality gradually if the result improves.

  1. Open Fortnite’s Settings and go to the graphics or video page.
  2. Set Quality Presets to Low.
  3. Set 3D Resolution to 100%.
  4. Apply the settings and restart if Fortnite requests it.
  5. Test the problem area.
  6. If the fault is gone and performance is stable, raise one quality setting at a time. Test after each change so you know which option reintroduces the problem.

Changing several options at once makes the result difficult to interpret. Keep a short note of each change, especially if an update has reset or altered your previous configuration.

Make sure Fortnite uses the high-performance GPU

Laptops and PCs with both integrated and discrete graphics can launch Fortnite on the lower-power adapter. That can look like a sudden performance loss even when the game and driver are current.

  1. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Add Fortnite to the app list if it is not already present. Select the game executable used by your installation.
  3. Choose Options, select High performance, and save.
  4. Restart Fortnite and check the active GPU in Task Manager’s Performance tab while the game is running.

Menu labels can vary slightly by Windows release and GPU software. The goal is to assign the game to the discrete or high-performance adapter, not to force every Windows application onto it.

Reduce background load

Background programs compete for processor time, memory, disk bandwidth, and GPU resources. Epic’s low-FPS guidance recommends reducing unnecessary programs while testing.

  • Close browsers with many tabs, video encoders, game-recording tools, launchers, and large downloads.
  • Pause cloud synchronization and file indexing temporarily if they are actively using the disk.
  • Open Task Manager and sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to find an application consuming an unusual amount of a resource.
  • Do not end a Windows process when you do not know what it does. Close only applications you recognize, then test Fortnite again.

Epic also documents optional Windows steps such as assigning Fortnite to a high-performance GPU, changing power settings, enabling Game Mode, and turning off Xbox Game Bar. Treat these as targeted troubleshooting options for suitable Windows PCs, not mandatory settings for every player.

Check heat and airflow when problems appear during long sessions

A system that plays normally for a while and then begins stuttering may be reducing clock speeds as temperatures rise. Epic identifies overheating as one possibility and recommends checking ventilation.

  • Keep the PC’s intake and exhaust vents unobstructed.
  • Place a laptop on a hard, flat surface rather than fabric that blocks its underside vents.
  • Clean dust from fans and vents using the manufacturer’s safe cleaning procedure.
  • Test in a well-ventilated space and compare the first minutes of a session with the period when the slowdown normally begins.

Temperature behavior varies by model, room temperature, fan curve, and dust level. Avoid treating a single temperature reading as proof of a fault; look for a repeatable pattern in which clocks or performance fall as the system warms.

Review Windows power settings

Power management can limit performance, especially on a laptop running from battery. Epic’s guidance discusses using a higher-performance Windows power mode while warning that it can reduce battery life.

  1. Connect the laptop’s power adapter if you are testing maximum performance.
  2. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  3. Choose the available performance-oriented power mode for testing.
  4. Play the same scenario again, then return to a balanced mode if the performance difference is not useful or battery runtime matters more.

Higher performance mode increases power use and may increase heat. It cannot compensate for a GPU that is below Fortnite’s minimum requirements or for a blocked cooling system.

Consider an SSD only when storage is the bottleneck

Epic lists an NVMe solid-state drive in its recommended PC specifications and says an SSD may help older machines fit the game in memory and reduce hitches or stutters. Epic also states that results vary by hardware.

An SSD is most relevant when Fortnite is installed on a slow mechanical drive and the symptom appears during asset streaming or loading. It is less likely to solve a problem caused by an underpowered GPU, insufficient RAM, a CPU limit, a bad driver, or overheating.

  • Check which drive contains Fortnite and whether it is an HDD or SSD.
  • Confirm that the motherboard or laptop supports the NVMe form factor and interface before buying hardware.
  • Make sure the new drive has enough capacity for Fortnite and other required software.
  • After installation, install or move the game, verify its files, and compare the same in-game scenario.

Do not treat an SSD as a universal post-update cure or assume that moving the game will increase average FPS. Its likely benefit is faster asset access and fewer storage-related pauses on an older system.

Follow a careful crash-recovery sequence

If crashes continue after checking requirements, drivers, files, and settings, Epic’s broader PC sequence moves to progressively more disruptive steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Repeat the requirements check and file verification after documenting the crash pattern.
  2. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache using Epic’s current launcher-cache instructions.
  3. Run the launcher as administrator for a test session, then close it and return to normal operation if elevation makes no difference.
  4. Install current Windows and graphics-driver updates appropriate for the PC.
  5. Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher or Fortnite only after the preceding checks fail. Reinstallation can take considerable time and uses additional bandwidth.

Keep error messages, crash times, and the last setting changed. That information is more useful to support than a report that the game “just crashes.”

Reset Fortnite’s local settings file for crashes after a PC update

For crashes specifically reported after a PC update, Epic’s dedicated guidance instructs players to delete the GameUserSettings file from Fortnite’s local configuration folder, then launch the game again. This resets stored game settings; it is not a guaranteed fix and should be used only when the crash pattern matches the guidance.

  1. Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Use Epic’s current support instructions to locate Fortnite’s local configuration folder.
  3. Delete the file named GameUserSettings as directed by Epic.
  4. Start Fortnite and allow it to recreate the settings file.
  5. Reapply graphics options gradually rather than restoring every previous setting at once.

Because this procedure resets configuration data, record any custom settings you want to restore. Do not delete unrelated files from the folder.

Use Epic’s published FPS examples correctly

Epic’s Performance Mode guidance gives two laptop examples from a standard Squads match at 720p: one example rose from 24 FPS to 61 FPS, and another rose from 18 FPS to 45 FPS after the mode change. These are examples from particular laptops, not an independent benchmark or a promise of the same result on your PC.

Your result depends on the processor, GPU, memory, drivers, cooling, background load, resolution, and current game build. Measure before and after in the same mode and location if you want a meaningful comparison.

A compact decision path

  1. Below minimum requirements: lower settings first, then evaluate whether a compatible hardware upgrade is practical.
  2. Problem began with the update and includes hitching or crashes: update or reinstall the graphics driver, then verify files.
  3. Low FPS without crashes: try Performance Mode, Low quality, and 100% 3D Resolution; confirm the high-performance GPU is selected.
  4. Only after long play: inspect vents, dust, room airflow, and power mode.
  5. Only on a laptop with two GPUs: assign Fortnite to the high-performance adapter.
  6. Crashes remain after all checks: clear launcher cache, test administrator launch, then consider reinstalling or resetting GameUserSettings when Epic’s post-update crash procedure applies.

Change one category at a time and retest. That preserves a cause-and-effect trail and prevents a working setting from being lost among unrelated changes.

What a successful fix should look like

After each change, use the same Fortnite mode, resolution, and approximate play area for comparison. A useful improvement is not merely a higher peak FPS: it is fewer pauses, steadier frame delivery, no new graphical corruption, and no repeat of the crash under the same conditions. If a change improves one symptom while creating another—for example, smoother play with unacceptable image quality—keep the setting only if that trade-off suits how you play.
