For an all-day Coleman cooler, start with a cold cooler and cold food, use enough ice, pack food tightly, and keep the lid closed in the shade. Coleman’s current use guidance calls for about 0.75 pounds of ice per rated quart of cooler capacity. Use cubes when you need rapid cooling, larger blocks when you need longer retention, and a thermometer to verify that perishable food remains at or below 40°F (4.4°C).
The cooler’s advertised retention time is not a guarantee for every model or weather condition. Ambient temperature, sunlight, how full the cooler is, the type and amount of ice, and how often the lid is opened determine whether food stays cold through the day.

Build the coldest possible starting point
Pre-chill the cooler
Before loading it, chill the empty Coleman cooler. The most effective approach is to fill it temporarily with sacrificial ice or frozen water bottles, close the lid, and let the interior cool. Drain that temporary meltwater immediately before packing. Starting with warm plastic and insulation forces your usable ice to spend its first hours lowering the cooler’s temperature instead of keeping food cold.

Do the same with the contents. Refrigerate drinks, cooked foods, cut fruit, dairy, and other perishables before they go outside. Freeze items that can safely be frozen, such as bottled water or some gel packs. Never rely on ice to cool a large quantity of room-temperature food at the beginning of the day; that consumes the cold reserve you need later.

Calculate the ice charge from rated capacity
Coleman recommends 0.75 pounds of ice for every rated quart of cooler capacity. “Rated quarts” refers to the cooler’s stated capacity, not the amount of food you intend to carry. Use a scale when possible, because estimating by bag size can leave you substantially short.
| Cooler capacity | Ice at 0.75 lb per quart | Useful planning note |
|---|---|---|
| 20 quarts | 15 lb | Suitable for a compact food or lunch setup; leave room for contents. |
| 28 quarts | 21 lb | A practical day-trip size for a small group. |
| 40 quarts | 30 lb | Allows more food, but only if the ice is not displaced by overpacking. |
| 48 quarts | 36 lb | Useful for a family day out; plan the weight before transporting it. |
| 70 quarts | 52.5 lb | Requires substantial ice and careful lifting; two people may be needed. |
These values are direct calculations from Coleman’s ratio. A cooler that is only partly full needs proportionally more cold mass around the empty space, because warm air enters whenever the lid opens and there is less chilled food to act as thermal ballast. If you cannot fill the cooler with food, use additional ice, frozen water bottles, or frozen gel packs to occupy empty volume.
Choose cubes, blocks, or reusable packs
Cube ice for fast cooling
Cube ice has a lot of surface area in contact with containers, so it chills drinks and food quickly. It is the best choice when items start slightly warmer than refrigerator temperature or when people need cold beverages soon after arrival. The trade-off is that cubes melt sooner than a large block, especially in a hot, frequently opened cooler.
Block ice for longer hold time
Large blocks expose less surface area to warm air and melt more slowly. Coleman specifically recommends block ice when the priority is keeping food cold longer. Put blocks where they will remain in contact with the main food load, then use a smaller amount of cube ice to fill gaps and cool individual drinks.

Frozen gel packs and frozen drinks
Frozen gel packs are reusable and do not create loose meltwater. Frozen water bottles or other frozen drinks provide similar thermal mass and become usable beverages as they thaw. USDA guidance identifies frozen gel packs and frozen drinks as cold sources for transporting food. Follow the pack maker’s instructions for freezing and inspect packs for leaks before placing them next to food.
| Cold source | Cooling speed | How long it tends to last | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cube ice | Fast | Shorter than large blocks under the same conditions | Rapidly chilling drinks and filling gaps |
| Block ice | Slower | Longer because less surface area melts | Maintaining a low temperature through the day |
| Frozen gel packs | Moderate | Reusable; depends on pack size and insulation | Clean, contained cooling around prepared foods |
| Frozen bottles or drinks | Moderate | Gradual thawing while providing a drink later | Replacing part of the loose ice load |
A mixed load is usually more practical than choosing only one type: blocks or large frozen packs provide lasting cold, while cubes rapidly cool the outer surfaces of food and drinks. Do not assume a few gel packs can replace the ice mass required by the 0.75-pound-per-quart guideline; compare their frozen weight and coverage with the size of your cooler.
Pack the cooler so cold reaches every item
Use a bottom-to-top loading plan
- Line the base with durable cold mass. Place a block, large frozen pack, or a layer of cubes on the bottom. This creates a cold reservoir and helps maintain temperature as meltwater forms.
- Add sealed raw foods at the bottom. Put raw meat, poultry, and seafood in leakproof bags or watertight containers directly over the cold base. Keeping them low prevents drips from reaching ready-to-eat food.
- Load already-cold prepared foods. Add cooked food, dairy, and other perishables in sealed containers. Tight packing leaves fewer pockets of warm air.
- Place ready-to-eat foods above raw foods. Keep salads, fruit, sandwiches, and snacks in separate sealed containers or bags so they cannot contact raw-food packaging or meltwater.
- Add drinks and remaining ice. Put frequently requested beverages in spaces where they can be reached without disturbing the food. Fill gaps with cube ice or smaller frozen packs.
- Finish with a cold top layer. Add block ice, a large frozen pack, or a generous layer of cubes over the contents before closing the lid. Cold air settles downward, and the top layer limits heat entering from the lid.
Keep food that must remain dry in watertight containers. Meltwater can make packaging soggy and can spread contamination if a raw-food package leaks. A drain plug, if your model has one, can be opened briefly to remove excess water without leaving the lid open; do not drain away useful cold mass unnecessarily.

Use one sealed zone for raw meat, poultry, and seafood and another for ready-to-eat food whenever possible. If you have only one cooler, raw items belong at the bottom and should be double-bagged or placed in a leakproof container. Keep utensils, plates, and clean hands away from the raw-food packaging. Never place cooked food in a container that previously held raw food unless it has been washed.

Prevent heat from entering during the day
Choose shade and a cool surface
Put the cooler in continuous shade, not beside a vehicle window or on sun-heated pavement. A blanket, towel, or tarp over the closed cooler adds a practical barrier against radiant heat. Leave air space around the cooler’s exterior vents or drain areas if the model requires it, and do not cover it with material that traps excessive heat against the shell.
Open the lid briefly and deliberately
Plan what you need before opening the lid. Take several drinks out at once, close the cooler, and return only when necessary. Every opening replaces chilled air with warmer ambient air and exposes the ice to a new heat load. Arrange items by frequency of use so that commonly selected drinks or snacks are near the top or in a separate basket.
Use a separate beverage cooler when drinks are popular
USDA recommends a separate cooler for drinks when people retrieve them often. A dedicated beverage cooler prevents repeated openings from warming the food cooler and keeps the main supply closed for longer. If you use two coolers, apply the same pre-chilling, ice-ratio, shade, and thermometer practices to the food cooler; the drink cooler can be opened more frequently because it does not contain your most temperature-sensitive foods.
Keep the cooler closed during transport
Load it at the last possible moment, secure the lid, and keep it in the passenger compartment or another shaded, air-conditioned area rather than a hot trunk when practical. Avoid leaving it in a parked vehicle. If the cooler must remain in a vehicle, use the coolest shaded location available and move it out as soon as you arrive.

Verify that food is actually safe
Use an appliance or cooler thermometer
Cold food should remain at or below 40°F (4.4°C). USDA recommends carrying an appliance thermometer so you can measure the cooler rather than judging safety by touch or by the appearance of the ice. Place the thermometer among the food, not on top of a block where it may show the ice temperature instead of the food temperature. Check after loading, during the warmest part of the day, and before serving food that has been opened repeatedly.
A reading above 40°F is a warning to add cold mass, move the cooler into deeper shade, stop opening it, and reassess immediately. Do not use a brief low reading as proof that every item stayed cold; the thermometer shows conditions at its location, so place it near the most vulnerable perishable foods.
Apply the time-limit rule
USDA FSIS guidance says to discard perishable food that has been above 40°F for two hours. When the outdoor temperature is above 90°F, the limit is one hour. This clock includes time spent warming before the food entered the cooler, time during transport, and time after the cooler no longer maintained a safe temperature.
If a cooler has no ice left, USDA advises that leftovers are safe only when ice is still present. When the ice has completely melted and you cannot establish that the food stayed at or below 40°F, discard perishable leftovers rather than tasting them to test safety. Smell and appearance cannot reliably detect dangerous bacterial growth.

Example full-day packing plans
Small group, 20-quart cooler
Start with 15 pounds of total ice or an equivalent combination of blocks, cubes, and frozen packs. Pre-chill the cooler and all contents. Put one block or several large frozen packs on the base, place sealed raw or highly perishable items low, then add prepared food and drinks. Use cubes to fill gaps and finish with cold mass on top. A separate small drink container is worthwhile if the cooler will be opened repeatedly.
Family day, 40-quart cooler
Plan around 30 pounds of ice. Use at least one large block for endurance and cubes for rapid drink cooling. Pack food tightly in meal-sized containers, keep raw proteins in a leakproof bottom compartment, and reserve the top for a cold block and items needed late in the day. If the cooler is half empty, add frozen bottles or packs rather than leaving a large pocket of air.
Large group, 70-quart cooler
A 70-quart cooler calls for about 52.5 pounds of ice under Coleman’s ratio. Divide the load by function if possible: one cooler for food and one for drinks. A single very large cooler can be difficult to lift and may lose more cold each time it is opened. Use multiple blocks, sealed food bins, and a written packing plan so that people do not search through the food compartment.
Troubleshoot common failures
The ice melted before the day ended
- Check whether the starting ice load met the 0.75-pound-per-rated-quart guideline.
- Confirm that the cooler and contents were pre-chilled rather than loaded at room temperature.
- Look for direct sun, a hot vehicle, or a lid opened repeatedly.
- Use larger blocks or more frozen mass next time, and add a cover in shade.
- Do not simply add loose ice to food that has already exceeded the safe temperature limit; measure first and apply the discard rule.
Drinks are cold but food is warm
Drinks may be surrounded by cubes while food is separated from the cold source by containers or air pockets. Repack with cold mass under, between, and above the food. Place the thermometer next to the perishables, not among drinks, and use a separate beverage cooler to reduce access-related warming.
Food is wet or contaminated by meltwater
Use watertight containers and double bags, keep raw foods at the bottom, and separate ready-to-eat items from the drain area. Drain only excess water when necessary; do not allow a leaking raw-food package to share a container with anything that will be eaten without cooking.
The cooler is cold but the thermometer reads above 40°F
Verify that the thermometer is working and positioned among the food. Add ice or frozen packs around the warm zone, close the lid, and move the cooler into shade. If the food has remained above 40°F longer than the applicable two-hour or one-hour limit, discard it even if the cooler later becomes cold.
