To protect family photos and files from ransomware, keep more than one backup, make at least one copy ransomware cannot readily reach, and test that you can restore it. An external drive that stays unplugged between backup sessions can provide an offline copy; a cloud service can add another layer if it lets you recover older, unaffected versions. Neither a single drive nor cloud storage alone guarantees protection.
Start by finding every copy of the files you care about
List the devices and places where family photos and personal files are stored: computers, phones, removable media, and any cloud accounts already in use. Include files outside default photo and document folders, such as scanned records or files saved in app-specific locations. Prioritize irreplaceable items, then make sure your backup routine covers the locations where those files actually live.

Set a regular time to update the backups. The right interval depends on how often your family creates or changes important files; a backup that is too old may not include recent photos or documents.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake an offline copy with an external drive
An external hard drive is a practical household option. Connect it to copy your files, then disconnect it when the backup is complete and store it somewhere safe. CISA advises against leaving an external drive connected when it is not actively being used for backup: ransomware on the computer may be able to access, delete, or corrupt a connected drive. CISA’s personal-device guidance explains this risk.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connect the drive and copy the files you identified, including newly added or changed items.
- Check that the copy completed and that the expected folders and files appear on the drive.
- Disconnect the drive and store it safely until the next backup session.
A drive that remains plugged in is not an offline copy. The drive also needs to be updated often enough to contain the files you would want to recover.
Use cloud storage carefully: sync is not always backup
Cloud storage can give you another copy, but synchronization may mirror changes—including damage. In its September 2023 #StopRansomware Guide, CISA warns that automated cloud backups may not be sufficient: if an attacker encrypts local files, those files may sync to the cloud and possibly overwrite unaffected data.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before relying on a service, check directly with the provider whether it retains prior versions or offers another way to restore files from before an unwanted change, how long those versions remain available, and how restoration works. Features differ by provider and service, so do not assume that synchronization alone gives you a recoverable backup.
Choose a backup routine that fits your household
An external drive and a cloud service address different risks. The drive can be disconnected between backup sessions, while a cloud copy may be easier to access from another device. Your choice should turn on whether ransomware can reach the copy, whether clean older versions can be restored, how straightforward recovery is, how well you can protect access, and how frequently the copy is updated.

| Consideration | External drive | Cloud service |
|---|---|---|
| Can ransomware on the device reach it? | A disconnected drive is not reachable through that connection; a connected drive may be exposed. | Depends on how the service handles syncing and recovery; encrypted local files may sync and overwrite unaffected data. |
| Can you recover an older clean version? | Depends on the backup copies you maintain. | Check the provider’s version history or other recovery options, including how long versions are retained. |
| How do you restore files? | Copy files back from the drive. | Follow the provider’s restoration process; check it before relying on the service. |
| How is access protected? | Keep the drive physically safe and disconnected between sessions. | Use a strong, unique password and multifactor authentication where available. |
| How current is the copy? | Depends on how often you connect the drive and update it. | Depends on the service and the backup or sync settings you select. |
These are practical distinctions, not a product ranking. For stronger protection, maintain more than one copy rather than treating either option as a complete solution.
Protect the accounts that control your backups
A backup may be less useful if someone can access or delete it through an account. Use a strong, unique password for accounts that control cloud copies and turn on multifactor authentication where available. CISA emphasizes multifactor authentication in its broader ransomware guidance for accounts with access to critical systems; for a household, it is a useful account-protection measure, not a replacement for separate backups.

Test that you can actually restore files
A backup is useful only if its files can be recovered. Periodically restore a small selection to a separate location, then open the files to confirm they work. For example, copy a few photos and a document from the backup to a different folder or device and check them there. CISA’s organizational guidance recommends testing backup availability and integrity; this small restore check is a practical household adaptation, not a CISA-prescribed family schedule.
If ransomware is suspected, protect the backups before restoring
Do not connect backup media to a device that may still be infected, and do not restore files until the affected device has been isolated and is known to be clean. The official guidance cited here is primarily organizational; for help with a specific consumer incident, consult current official guidance rather than improvising a detailed recovery procedure.
