For routine dust on an assembled LEGO model, use a clean, dry, very soft brush and light strokes. Stabilize the build, support fragile sections, and work from the top down. Keep strong air blasts away from small or moving pieces: they can dislodge lightweight elements. Washing is a different job—take the model apart first and follow LEGO’s hand-cleaning limits for loose elements.
Why moving LEGO models need a gentler method
A display model with hinges, gears, wheels, minifigures, clips, chains or articulated limbs has two cleaning problems at once. Dust sits on exposed surfaces, but the act of cleaning can also move a joint, snag a detail or loosen a connection. A method that is acceptable for a box of loose bricks can be unnecessarily risky on an assembled model.

Routine dusting should therefore be treated as surface maintenance, not washing. The goal is to lift loose particles without adding water, detergent or force. LEGO’s official consumer cleaning guidance is written for individual pieces. It recommends hand-cleaning with water no hotter than 104°F (40°C) and a soft cloth or sponge, but it does not authorize soaking or spraying a complex display build.

Prepare the model and your workspace
Most damage happens before the brush touches the model. Set up so you are not trying to hold the build, rotate a mechanism and clean at the same time.
- Make the model stable. Leave it on a firm shelf, base or table. If the base rocks, steady the base rather than gripping a thin appendage.
- Use a dedicated clean, dry brush. A very soft artist’s or makeup dusting brush is the appropriate category. It should have no residue from cosmetics, paint, oils or cleaning chemicals.
- Improve visibility. Use bright, indirect light so you can see dust in gaps without placing the model in direct sunlight.
- Clear a landing area. Put a clean tray or cloth below the work area to catch any element that does come loose. Do not use a fuzzy towel whose fibers can catch on clips or axles.
- Stop active functions. Do not run motors, turn gears or repeatedly articulate a mechanism while dusting. Movement can pull grit into joints and makes the model harder to support.
- Remove nearby hazards. Keep liquids, food, sprays and the vacuum nozzle away from the build unless you are deliberately using a carefully controlled air attachment on a separate, sturdy area.
Before starting, look for pre-existing loose connections, cracked pieces, unsupported wings or hanging details. Cleaning is a poor time to discover that a section has been held in place only by friction.
Step-by-step dry dusting for an assembled set
- Photograph or inspect the build. A quick reference photo helps you notice whether a moving assembly has shifted. Check wheels, hinges, levers, doors and decorative elements that hang beyond the main body.
- Hold the structure, not the detail. Place one hand lightly against a broad, solid section of the base or frame. Never lift a model by a thin arm, antenna, spoiler, rotor blade or moving control.
- Start at the highest surfaces. Use the brush to make short, light passes across roofs, upper decks and other horizontal surfaces. Dust loosened there will fall toward areas you have not cleaned yet.
- Work downward in small zones. Finish one section before moving to the next. Keep the brush nearly parallel to a surface rather than poking vertically into a cluster of studs.
- Use the tip around details. For bars, clips, grille pieces, minifigure accessories and narrow gaps, use the outer tips of the bristles. Do not press the brush into a joint or force a part to create clearance.
- Support fragile sections as you pass. Put a finger or a second soft support under a cantilevered panel, wing or articulated limb. The support should prevent bending; it should not squeeze the assembly.
- Pause at every moving interface. Dust the visible outside of a hinge, wheel or gear first. If particles remain inside, leave the mechanism assembled rather than levering it open with the brush.
- Inspect from several angles. Turn your body or use a light, not the model, to check undersides and rear surfaces. Rotate the model only by a broad, well-supported base.
- Clean the brush separately. Shake loose dust outdoors or wash and dry the brush according to its material before returning it to storage. A dirty brush simply redistributes grit.
Use only enough pressure to move loose dust. If a piece flexes, clicks, rotates or lifts, stop and support that area before continuing. The objective is a dust-free appearance, not removal of every particle from an inaccessible internal cavity.

How to protect hinges, gears and other moving details
Hinges and articulated limbs
Keep the joint in its current position while brushing the outside. Opening and closing it to reach both sides can shift pins or pull adjacent plates apart. Brush along the direction of the visible surface, then leave the hidden side for a later cleaning session when the model can be supported from underneath.

Wheels, axles and gears
Do not spin a wheel or gear with the brush. Bristles can catch between teeth or spokes, and moving a dusty mechanism can draw particles into the contact surfaces. Dust the accessible faces while the assembly is still, using several light passes rather than one forceful stroke.
Chains, ropes and flexible elements
Flexible parts are easy to snag. Keep the brush moving in the same direction as the chain or rope and support its anchor points. If the brush catches, release it without pulling; dismantling that small section is safer than dragging the element through the model.
Small clips, bars and decorative parts
Use the softest part of the bristles and approach from the side. A direct downward push can pop a clip or rotate a bar. For a detail that cannot be reached without pressure, accept a small amount of dust rather than risk a connection.
Should you use compressed air or a blower?
Gentle moving air can lift loose dust from an open surface, but the available collector guidance gives no validated pressure, nozzle distance or universal safe setting. Strong airflow can dislodge small or lightweight elements, especially on models with loose accessories, flags, foliage, panels or articulated sections.

If you choose to use air, treat it as a selective supplement rather than the primary tool:
- Use the lowest practical airflow and keep the stream moving.
- Point across a surface instead of directly into a joint, grille or gap.
- Shield nearby loose details with your free hand while testing a short burst on a sturdy area.
- Stop immediately if an element vibrates, rotates or shifts.
- Do not assume a canister, compressor or household dryer has a safe setting; no pressure or distance is established here.
A brush is generally easier to control around moving pieces because you can see and feel the contact point. Air is most useful for loose dust on broad, robust surfaces that the brush cannot reach without pushing against a detail.
When dusting is not enough: wash only separated elements
Sticky residue, fingerprints, food film or grime may need washing rather than dry dusting. In that situation, plan a controlled disassembly. LEGO Education’s hygiene guidance states that joined elements will not be cleaned effectively and instructs users to take all elements apart before cleaning. That document is written for classroom materials, so use it as handling guidance rather than as a consumer display-model procedure.

- Separate the model into manageable groups. Keep axles, pins, clips and electronic parts organized so they are not lost or mixed.
- Remove electronics first. Unplug sensors and motors from electronic or intelligent hardware and disconnect every power source before any cleaning.
- Hand-clean loose elements. LEGO’s consumer instructions recommend water no hotter than 104°F (40°C) with a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent may be added and rinsed away.
- Rinse without aggressive force. Avoid forcing water through mechanisms, stickers or assemblies that have not been fully separated.
- Dry safely. Do not use a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave or hair dryer. LEGO also warns against drying pieces in direct sunlight.
- Dry completely before rebuilding. Pay attention to hollow pieces, axles and connection points where retained moisture could remain.
Do not interpret the temperature limit as permission to immerse an intact display model. A complex assembled set can trap water, conceal detergent and expose electronic or sensitive components.
Cleaning electronics and sensitive components
Powered hubs, motors, sensors, battery boxes and wiring need a separate plan. Keep them out of water and away from sprays. LEGO’s consumer guidance recommends a damp cloth with mild detergent without perfume or oil for sensitive or metal-containing parts; the cloth should be damp, not dripping. LEGO Education likewise says to unplug sensors and motors before cleaning.

For an electronic module, remove loose dust with a dry, soft brush first. If a surface needs wiping, apply the small amount of moisture to the cloth rather than spraying the component. Keep liquid away from ports, seams, switches and contacts. Do not reconnect power until every part is fully dry.
If a mechanism contains electronics that cannot be removed without major disassembly, restrict cleaning to dry external dusting. The risk of liquid entering a hidden housing outweighs the benefit of removing a small amount of residue.

Prevent dust from settling again
Use an enclosed display case as an option
A display case or dust cover can reduce the model’s exposure to airborne dust, but the available evidence is qualitative and does not quantify how much dust it prevents. Treat the case as a barrier, not a guarantee. Dust can enter through openings, and the case itself needs cleaning.
When accessing a cased model, clean the exterior first so particles on the cover do not fall inside. Close the case after handling and avoid placing it next to vents, fans or high-traffic areas that blow debris toward the display. Check that the case does not press against moving parts or delicate projections.

Choose placement that makes cleaning easier
A stable shelf with enough clearance lets you brush from above and support the base. Avoid locations where the model must be lifted by an appendage or squeezed between objects. Leave room to see the rear and upper surfaces; inaccessible dust is more likely to accumulate unnoticed.
Inspect instead of forcing a schedule
No measured cleaning interval is established for assembled LEGO models. Inspect the display when dust becomes visible, after nearby work that creates debris, or whenever a case is opened. A short, gentle pass is safer than waiting until heavy buildup requires pressure.
Common mistakes and safer corrections
- Spraying cleaner directly on the build: Stop and switch to a dry brush. Liquid can migrate into joints, stickers and electronics.
- Using a vacuum nozzle against the model: Suction and contact can pull off small parts. Use a brush, or only carefully controlled low airflow on a sturdy area.
- Blowing hard into gaps: Strong air can launch lightweight pieces into the room. Use short, gentle, sideways airflow or leave the gap alone.
- Rotating mechanisms while brushing: Keep gears, wheels and hinges still so grit is not worked into contact points.
- Holding a model by a thin appendage: Support the broad base or frame and brace fragile sections from underneath.
- Washing an intact complex set: Disassemble first. Joined elements are not effectively cleaned, and trapped water is difficult to remove.
- Using heat to speed drying: Avoid ovens, microwaves, hair dryers and direct sunlight, as LEGO’s instructions specifically warn against them.
- Cleaning powered parts while connected: Unplug motors and sensors and remove all power before any damp-cloth work.
- Rebuilding while pieces are damp: Allow every element and contact point to dry fully before assembly or reconnection.
A practical decision guide
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure which method fits the condition of the model:
- Is the problem loose, dry dust? Stabilize the model and use the soft-brush procedure.
- Would reaching the dust require moving or bending a detail? Support the section, change the brush angle, or leave that small area rather than forcing access.
- Is the surface greasy or sticky? Plan disassembly and hand-clean the loose elements within LEGO’s 104°F (40°C) water limit.
- Does the area contain electronics or metal contacts? Disconnect power and use only a carefully controlled dry or damp-cloth method suitable for that component.
- Are pieces repeatedly collecting dust between cleanings? Consider an enclosed case and improve placement, while recognizing that neither measure eliminates dust completely.
The safest routine is the least aggressive one that solves the visible problem: dry brush for dust, separated-piece hand washing for grime, and extra caution wherever motion, clips or electronics are involved.
