Keep digital money safe by protecting two separate control points: the wallet keys that authorize transactions and the accounts that let you sign in to a custodial service or email account. Use a small, carefully managed hot-wallet balance for routine spending, keep long-term holdings in offline storage when self-custody is appropriate, secure every related account with unique passwords and strong multi-factor authentication (MFA), and maintain an offline recovery plan that you have actually tested.
The controls are complementary, not interchangeable. A hardware wallet cannot compensate for a leaked recovery phrase; a strong exchange password cannot recover coins sent to a fraudulent address. The practical goal is to limit online exposure while ensuring that you—not an attacker, a lost device, or a failed provider—can recover legitimate access.

What a digital-money wallet actually protects
For Bitcoin, a wallet is software or a device that manages private keys. The coins are recorded on the blockchain; the keys are the credentials that authorize spending. Bitcoin.org explains the distinction in its Bitcoin FAQ. Whoever controls the keys controls the ability to move the funds.

That can simplify backups and day-to-day access, but it adds dependence on the provider’s security, availability and solvency. In self-custody, you hold the keys and bear responsibility for the wallet, backups, authentication and recovery process. Neither arrangement is universally safer: they fail in different ways.

| Arrangement | Who controls the keys | Main exposure | Your critical responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custodial account | The service | Provider breach, outage, account takeover or insolvency | Choose the service carefully, protect the login and secure the recovery channel |
| Self-custody hot wallet | You | Internet-connected phone or computer, malware and phishing | Protect the device, verify transactions and secure the recovery phrase |
| Self-custody cold storage | You | Lost or exposed backups, setup mistakes and fraudulent transactions | Keep keys offline, maintain durable backups and follow the wallet’s restore procedure |
Before transferring a meaningful amount, decide which failure you can manage better: trusting a provider with custody, or taking full responsibility for key storage and recovery. Read the wallet’s official backup instructions before you fund it; backup requirements differ between products.
Choose hot, cold or custodial storage
Hot wallets for limited, routine spending
A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected phone or computer. It is convenient for frequent payments and for interacting with applications, but the connected device is part of the attack surface. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on everyday devices and using a safer environment for the remainder. See Securing your wallet.
Cold storage for funds you do not regularly move
Cold storage keeps keys offline. A hardware wallet is one way to do this, but “offline” does not mean risk-free. A compromised computer can present a malicious transaction for you to approve, a counterfeit device can expose keys, and a lost or badly recorded backup can make funds inaccessible. Treat the device, its setup process and its recovery material as one security system.
A practical split
Many people use a small hot-wallet balance for ordinary spending and separate offline storage for savings. Set the spending limit low enough that a single compromised phone or computer would be tolerable. Move larger amounts only after checking the receiving address and transaction details on a trusted display or through the wallet’s full verification flow.
Custody is a decision about responsibility, not a safety label
A custodial account may be easier to recover after a lost phone because the provider manages the keys, yet an attacker who takes over the account may be able to withdraw everything. Self-custody removes that provider dependency, but there is no support desk that can reset a forgotten recovery phrase. Choose deliberately, document the choice, and do not keep all funds in one arrangement merely for convenience.

Secure the accounts around your wallet
Wallet keys are only one layer. Your email account, exchange or payment-service account, cloud accounts and password manager can all be used to reset credentials or intercept notices. CISA states that MFA makes it more difficult for an attacker to gain access when a password or PIN has been compromised through phishing or another method; its guidance is available in Implementing Phishing-Resistant MFA.
Use a unique password for every account
- Create a long, random password for each exchange, email, financial and device account. Never reuse the password for your email or password manager anywhere else.
- Let a reputable password manager generate and store those passwords. Protect the manager with a strong master credential and its strongest available MFA.
- Keep account recovery codes in a separate secure location. Do not put wallet recovery phrases into an online account or password-manager vault unless a wallet’s documented security design and your threat model explicitly justify it.
- Secure the email account used for password resets before you secure secondary services. Review forwarding rules, active sessions, recovery addresses and unfamiliar devices.
CISA’s 2025 cybersecurity essentials recommend long, random, unique passwords and password managers. The page’s 16-character policy language is for state, local, tribal and territorial government organizations, not a universal personal threshold; the important personal rule is uniqueness and randomness. Prefer phishing-resistant MFA
| MFA method | What it improves | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FIDO/WebAuthn security key or passkey | Designed to resist fake sign-in sites by binding authentication to the legitimate service | You need a recovery plan for a lost or damaged authenticator; keep an appropriate spare according to the service’s rules |
| Authenticator application code | Does not depend on the mobile network and is generally preferable to SMS | A code can still be phished on a convincing fake site; protect the device and its backup process |
| Push approval | Convenient second factor | Repeated unsolicited prompts can lead to push-bombing approval; deny unexpected requests and report them |
| SMS or voice code | Better than a password alone | SIM swaps and weaknesses in phone signaling such as SS7 can expose codes; use a stronger option when offered |
Turn on the strongest method each service supports, register only authenticators you control, and save the service’s recovery codes separately. If a provider supports a security key, use it for both the financial account and the email account that can reset that account.
Keep software and devices current
Install operating-system, browser and wallet updates promptly. Updates can include security fixes. Download wallet applications and firmware only from the maker’s official channel, and reach support through a web address you locate independently rather than through an unsolicited message. Impostor support pages and applications are common routes to stolen credentials.
Set up a self-custody wallet without creating a new weakness
- Start from an authentic source. Use the wallet developer’s official website or app store listing, verify the publisher and check the documentation for supported networks and backup requirements.
- Generate the wallet yourself. During first-run setup, let the wallet create the recovery phrase. Never accept a phrase sent by a seller, support agent, QR code or web page. For a hardware wallet, buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller and generate the seed during setup.
- Record the phrase offline. Write the words exactly in the wallet’s stated order on a durable physical medium. Do not photograph or scan them, paste them into a note, email them, or store them in cloud storage. Anyone who obtains the phrase may access the funds.
- Protect the unlock credentials. Set a device PIN or wallet password. If the wallet supports an additional passphrase, document that it is required for restoration and protect it separately; forgetting it can make the associated funds unrecoverable.
- Test with a small amount. Receive a small transfer, close the wallet and follow the official restore instructions on a separate test setup if the documentation permits. Confirm that the restored wallet shows the expected address and balance before depositing more.
- Update before use, not during an emergency. Keep firmware and wallet software current, but verify update instructions through the official channel and read what the update changes.
A cold device reduces online key exposure; it does not validate the destination address or prevent you from approving a malicious transaction. Read the transaction details on the wallet’s trusted display and stop when the information does not match what you intended.

Build a recovery plan that survives a lost device
Understand the recovery phrase
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—is a sequence of words from which a wallet can be restored. It is not a customer-service password. No legitimate wallet or exchange representative needs it, and anyone who obtains it may control the corresponding funds. The basic handling guidance is summarized in Bitcoin.org’s FAQ.
Back up according to the wallet’s design
Some wallets require regular backups; many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from one phrase. Check the exact instructions for your wallet, including whether a passphrase, derivation setting, extra account or network-specific configuration is needed. A phrase that restores one account does not automatically prove that every account or asset is included.
Avoid a single point of failure
Keep backups in secure places protected from theft, fire, water and accidental disposal. Bitcoin.org recommends considering more than one physical location and durable media in its wallet-security guidance. Do not improvise a complicated storage scheme that creates more copies or more people who can access the phrase than your situation requires.
Test recovery before you need it
- Write down the wallet’s official restore steps and the software or device version they apply to.
- Verify that the backup words are legible and in the correct order without entering them into an online form.
- Use a controlled test environment, following the wallet’s documented process, to confirm that the expected addresses appear.
- Record any required passphrase, PIN policy or account-selection step separately from the phrase, while keeping both protected.
Losing a phone or hardware device can be recoverable when the necessary backup is intact. Losing the phrase, damaging every copy or forgetting a required additional password may be permanent. Do not assume that a cloud backup, a screenshot or a support ticket can substitute for the wallet’s documented recovery material.
Plan for an emergency or death
Estate planning is part of key management. A trusted person should know that a wallet exists, where the instructions are located and which official recovery procedure applies, without receiving casual access to the phrase. Separate location instructions from the secret itself when that reduces the chance of one theft exposing everything, and review the plan after changing wallets or passphrases.

Check every transaction and recognize scam patterns
Bitcoin transactions are generally irreversible. A mistaken or fraudulent transfer cannot normally be canceled by calling support, so verification before signing matters more than trying to recover funds afterward.
Use a pre-send checklist
- Confirm the recipient through a trusted channel, not only a message containing a payment address.
- Compare the entire address and amount. Do not rely only on the first and last characters.
- After copying an address, compare it again in the wallet’s send screen; malware can replace clipboard contents.
- For QR payments, verify the decoded address and amount on the wallet’s display. A QR code can lead to a phishing page or a wrong destination.
- For a new recipient or large transfer, send a small test amount when practical and wait for the recipient to confirm it.
- Review the network, fee and destination details before approving. Stop if the wallet displays a warning or an unfamiliar domain.
Common traps
- Fake support: An unsolicited “agent” asks for your phrase, private key, screen sharing or remote access.
- Recovery-fee fraud: Someone promises to retrieve lost funds after you pay an upfront fee or provide credentials. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance notes that no legitimate firm guarantees cryptocurrency recovery.
- Address poisoning: A small transaction from an address resembling one you use is intended to make you copy the wrong address from transaction history.
- Fake hardware: A device arrives with a pre-generated phrase or asks you to reveal the phrase during “activation.” Reject it and contact the maker through an independently found official channel.
- Urgent investment promises: A stranger claims your account is frozen, your wallet needs verification or a guaranteed return is available if you act immediately.
Use support links found on the provider’s official website or documentation, not links supplied by a stranger. Legitimate support does not need your recovery phrase or private key.
What to do when something goes wrong
The phone or hardware wallet is lost
Do not panic or enter the phrase into a random recovery site. Obtain the same wallet software or an explicitly compatible replacement through its official channel, then follow the documented restore procedure. If the device was unlocked or the phrase may have been exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and move remaining funds to a newly generated wallet from a clean setup after verifying every destination.
The recovery phrase was exposed
Assume an attacker can spend the funds. Stop using that wallet for new deposits, create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase on a trusted device, and transfer the remaining balance after checking the destination. Never try to “secure” an exposed phrase by sending it to support or storing it in another online service.
Recommended Free Tools
An exchange or payment account may be taken over
- Use an independently verified official contact path, not a link from the suspicious message.
- Change the account password and the password of the associated email account from a clean device.
- Revoke unfamiliar sessions, API keys, forwarding rules and newly added withdrawal addresses.
- Replace compromised MFA authenticators and use the service’s recovery process for lost devices.
- Document the timeline and transaction IDs for the provider and, where appropriate, law enforcement.
You sent to the wrong address
Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible. Contact the intended recipient only through a channel you already trust, and ignore anyone who guarantees recovery for a fee. Do not disclose your phrase while seeking help.
The device behaves suspiciously
Stop signing transactions, disconnect the device from the network if safe to do so, and use a separate trusted device to change account credentials. Reinstall wallet software only from an official source and restore from a backup whose integrity you can establish. If you cannot verify the device, treat it as untrusted and move funds through a newly created wallet after careful address verification.
A maintenance routine that keeps the plan usable
- Review account sessions, withdrawal addresses, recovery contacts and MFA registrations periodically.
- Install operating-system and wallet updates from official sources.
- Check that physical backups remain legible, accessible to the intended emergency contact and protected from environmental damage.
- Rehearse the official wallet restore process after major software or hardware changes, using a controlled test rather than a large balance.
- Reassess the amount kept in a hot wallet whenever your spending pattern changes.
- Teach household members one rule: no legitimate support person needs a recovery phrase or private key.
Where these recommendations apply
The wallet mechanics and transaction examples above are Bitcoin-focused because wallet formats, recovery methods and transaction finality vary across cryptocurrencies, tokens, payment applications and bank products. Before moving another digital asset, check that product’s current documentation for custody, network selection, backup and recovery behavior. The account-security principles—unique passwords, phishing-resistant MFA, protected email and independent support verification—apply broadly, but each service’s recovery rules and available authenticators differ.
