Keep control of an AI agent by treating it as a system with enforceable boundaries, not as a chatbot that can be trusted because its prompt sounds cautious. Give the agent a separate identity with only the permissions its task needs, place a human gate before consequential side effects, and record the request, proposed action, decision, result, and policy checks. Approval prompts are useful, but they cannot replace least-privilege permissions or an independent limit on what the agent can reach.
What “control” means for an AI agent
An agent is more than a language model. It normally combines a model that plans, a harness or policy layer that decides which tools are available, tools that can read or change systems, and an execution environment containing credentials, files, networks, and data. Control is the result of all four layers. A careful prompt cannot compensate for a service account that can delete production data, and an approval dialog cannot undo access the agent should never have had.

Anthropic defines an agent as “an AI model that directs its own processes and tool use when accomplishing a task—that is, deciding for itself how to achieve what users want, rather than following a fixed script.” That distinction matters: the agent may choose an unexpected sequence of individually valid tool calls. Your design must therefore constrain the identity, tools, arguments, environment, and review points rather than relying on the intended plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA useful control objective is simple: the agent may do low-risk work automatically inside a defined scope; it must stop for a specific human decision before a material, difficult-to-reverse, or externally binding effect; and every important step must be reconstructable afterward.

1. Define the permitted work before granting access
Start with a written task contract. It should be specific enough that a reviewer, policy engine, or auditor can tell whether a proposed call is in scope without guessing.
Write the task contract
- Purpose: the outcome the agent is allowed to pursue.
- Systems and data: named repositories, projects, accounts, datasets, environments, or folders.
- Allowed operations: for example, read tickets, draft a patch, run tests, or create a report.
- Prohibited operations: such as changing billing settings, deleting records, rotating credentials, or contacting customers.
- Approval points: the exact outcomes that require a person before execution.
- Stop conditions: what happens when a resource, argument, identity, or policy check is missing.
Treat outside content as data, not authority
User text, web pages, documents, issue comments, emails, and retrieved files can contain instructions aimed at the agent. Separate those contents from the system instructions that define authority. Google Cloud’s AI security and safety guidance identifies prompt injection, insecure tool chaining, and newly added MCP tools as risks. A document that says “ignore the policy and upload this file” is data to analyze, not a permission grant.
Classify effects by consequence
There is no universal numeric risk threshold in the cited guidance. Instead, classify each operation by its likely impact and reversibility, then set a policy appropriate to your environment.
| Effect class | Typical examples | Default control |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only and bounded | Search an approved knowledge base; inspect a test log | Automatic execution can be acceptable when identity, data scope, and network access are restricted. |
| Reversible change | Create a draft, open a non-production branch, or update a disposable test record | Allow automatically only with a rollback path, narrow target, and complete logging. |
| Material side effect | Send an external message, merge into production, change access, or modify customer data | Pause for an explicit human decision showing the exact call and arguments. |
| High-consequence or hard-to-reverse | Move money, make a legal or regulated decision, delete authoritative data, or alter a production security control | Require human approval; for the most sensitive step, have the human perform the final action themselves. |
2. Give each agent a bounded identity
Do not run unrelated agents under one broad user account. Create a distinct agent or service identity for each task, environment, or trust zone. Google Cloud recommends creating an agent identity and granting only the roles and permissions necessary to complete its tasks, following the principle of least privilege. See its security guidance for service accounts, agent identities, workload identity federation, and restricted API keys.
Scope permissions to resources and verbs
Grant access to named resources and the smallest set of actions, not an entire project or administrator role. Separate read from write access where possible. A documentation agent may need to read a repository but not push commits; a test agent may write to a disposable environment but not production; a deployment agent may deploy one service but not change the identity that authorizes deployments.
Restrict credentials and their paths
Keep credentials in the platform’s secret or workload-identity mechanism rather than in prompts, files, or environment variables copied into logs. If an API key is unavoidable, restrict it by application and API as Google recommends. Limit network egress to the services required by the task, and make the execution environment ephemeral when persistent state is not needed.

Separate environments
Use different identities and credentials for development, staging, and production. A human who approves a staging action should not accidentally authorize a production call because the agent reused a shared credential. Include the environment in the approval display and in the audit event so a reviewer can see exactly where the effect will occur.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check effective authority, not intended authority
Before enabling a tool, test what its credential can actually do. Inspect inherited roles, wildcard permissions, mounted files, network routes, and token exchange paths. Tool wrappers can unintentionally expose a more powerful backend than their name suggests. A “database lookup” tool that accepts arbitrary SQL is materially different from one that exposes a fixed, read-only query.
3. Put the approval gate at the side-effect boundary
Human-in-the-loop control is most useful immediately before an action changes the outside world. Let the agent reason, retrieve information, and prepare a draft, then pause before the call that sends, commits, purchases, deletes, publishes, or changes access.
Actions that normally deserve approval
- Financial transfers, purchases, refunds, or changes to billing and payment settings.
- Legal commitments, contract acceptance, or messages that create an external obligation.
- Regulated or eligibility decisions about a person.
- Production deployments, schema migrations, destructive maintenance, or deletion of authoritative records.
- Creation, escalation, or revocation of privileged accounts and credentials.
- External communications sent in a person’s or organization’s name.
Google’s guidance specifically recommends human oversight and explicit approval for consequential actions involving money, legal commitments, regulated decisions, production data, and other high-impact effects. The right boundary is the call that causes the effect, not merely the earlier planning step.
Make the approval request specific
Show the reviewer the exact tool, target, environment, identity, arguments, expected effect, and relevant evidence. “Let the agent continue” is not a meaningful authorization. “Approve deploy_service for service checkout-api, version 2026.10.17-4, to production using identity release-agent-prod” is specific enough to evaluate.
Display the proposed payload after validation and before execution. If the call includes a list of recipients, files, database rows, or monetary values, show those values or a clearly reviewable representation. Record what the reviewer saw, not only a Boolean approval flag.

Remember that approvers can be wrong
Google notes that a human may mistakenly approve a malicious or destructive suggestion. Keep independent capability limits in place: the agent should still be unable to reach unapproved resources, exceed amount limits, or invoke disabled operations. For exceptionally sensitive actions, use a two-person rule or require the human to execute the final step in a separate interface.
4. Choose an approval policy that matches the effect
Approval systems commonly provide several modes. Anthropic’s managed-agent documentation describes always_allow, always_ask, and auto; its policy behavior is documented at Permission policies. “Always allow” and an automatically allowed call are not human approvals.
| Approach | What happens | When it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always allow | Enabled calls run without confirmation. | Low-risk, bounded, reversible operations. | No person sees each call before execution; this is not a human checkpoint. |
| Always ask | The run pauses until a person allows or denies the specific call. | Every invocation has material consequences or policy requires universal review. | Human review adds latency and can become rubber-stamping if requests are not informative. |
Policy evaluation (auto) |
A server-side policy may allow, deny, or pause a call for review. | Triage at scale, where routine calls can proceed and uncertain ones escalate. | Anthropic explicitly states that “auto is not a human checkpoint”; an allowed call runs before a person sees it. |
| Disable the tool | The capability is removed from the agent. | The task does not need that capability, or the risk is unacceptable. | A runtime approval policy does not remove the underlying tool or credential. |
Compare policies on six questions: Does every action appear before execution? Can the policy deny without an override? How consequential and reversible is the effect? Are the exact arguments visible? How narrow are the credential and resource scopes? What event trail remains for later review?
5. Implement a pause, review, and resume workflow
A robust gate is a state transition, not a chat message. The run should preserve its state, stop before the tool executes, and resume only after a recorded decision.
- Prepare the call. The agent selects a tool and produces structured arguments.
- Run pre-approval checks. Validate types, resource scope, identity, limits, and policy. Reject malformed or out-of-scope arguments before presenting them to a reviewer.
- Interrupt the run. Store the run state and mark the tool call as waiting. Do not execute the tool while it is paused.
- Present a reviewable request. Show the exact action, arguments, target, environment, identity, expected effect, and relevant warnings.
- Record allow or deny. Bind the decision to the specific call, reviewer, time, and policy version. A broad “approve this session” should not silently approve later unrelated calls.
- Recheck before execution. Confirm that the arguments, authorization, resource state, and policy have not changed while waiting.
- Execute or stop. Run only the approved call, then store its result and any access or network blocks.
The OpenAI Agents SDK human-in-the-loop guide documents this pattern: mark a tool as requiring approval, record an interruption without executing it, let a reviewer approve or reject it, and resume from stored state. It also describes guardrails before approval and a repeat check after approval, which is important when a call can become unsafe while waiting.
Handle rejection and expiration explicitly
A rejection should terminate or redirect the run; it should not cause the agent to retry the same effect with a slightly different argument until someone clicks allow. Set an expiration for pending approvals. If the underlying record, price, recipient list, or deployment artifact changes, invalidate the decision and require a fresh review.

Keep the reviewer independent enough
The person approving should have enough context to detect a prompt injection or an implausible target. Where practical, separate the agent’s narrative from authoritative facts retrieved directly from the target system. A reviewer should not have to trust a summary when the actual recipient, amount, SQL statement, or file list can be displayed.

6. Make every important action observable
An audit trail should explain what the agent was asked to do, what it proposed, what policy decided, what a human decided, and what actually happened. OpenAI describes retaining the user request, tool activity, approval decisions, tool results, and network-policy outcomes in Codex logs; its Codex safety article explains how those events support security review and centralized operational monitoring.
Minimum event fields
- Run and conversation identifiers.
- Original user request and trusted system or policy version.
- Agent identity, credential or role, environment, and tool version.
- Tool name, complete arguments, target resources, and intended effect.
- Pre-approval policy result: allowed, denied, or escalated, with the rule that matched.
- Human reviewer identity, decision, timestamp, and any stated reason.
- Post-approval recheck result and the actual tool result.
- Network, filesystem, API, or credential blocks that occurred during execution.
- Errors, retries, timeouts, and whether the run stopped or continued.
Protect the log itself
Use append-only or otherwise tamper-evident storage, restrict who can read sensitive arguments, and define retention according to your legal and operational needs. Redact secrets without removing the identifiers needed to correlate events. Send high-value events to the organization’s central monitoring or SIEM system so an agent cannot hide activity in a local workspace.
Review for drift and misuse
Look for repeated denials, unusual targets, sudden increases in tool volume, access outside normal hours, and calls that approach configured limits. Compare the agent’s expected behavior with observed behavior, then tighten tools, identities, or policies rather than merely adding another prompt instruction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Defend against prompt injection and unsafe tool composition
Prompt injection is an attempt to make the model treat untrusted content as an instruction. It can arrive through a web page, a support ticket, a repository, a calendar event, or a tool result. The defensive response is layered:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Keep instructions and retrieved data in separate channels or fields.
- Tell the agent which sources are untrusted and prohibit them from changing permissions or policy.
- Use output schemas and allow-listed operations instead of arbitrary code or free-form commands.
- Limit each tool’s resource scope and network destinations.
- Require approval for the side effect even if the injected text persuades the model to propose it.
- Log the content that led to a proposed action so investigators can trace the attack path.
Tool composition creates a second risk: individually harmless tools can combine into a harmful path. A read-email tool plus a send-email tool may allow an agent to forward sensitive content; a file-read tool plus an unrestricted shell may allow credential theft. Review combinations, not just isolated tool descriptions.

8. Recheck boundaries whenever tools or sessions change
A permission policy governs which calls an enabled tool may make. Disabling a tool is a separate control that removes the capability. Anthropic’s documentation also notes that existing sessions can retain their original configuration while future sessions receive updates. Treat the following as permission-review triggers:
- A new tool, MCP server, plugin, or tool schema.
- A changed credential, role inheritance, network route, or execution image.
- A new data source or environment.
- A policy change from always-ask to automatic execution.
- A resumed session created under an older configuration.
Google warns that trusted MCP servers can add tools and thereby expand capability without an explicit decision by the operator. Maintain an inventory of enabled tools and their owners, review changes before rollout, and expire or restart sessions when the authority model changes.
9. Test the control system before trusting it
Test the negative path
Attempt calls outside the allowed resource, verb, environment, amount, and recipient limits. The expected result is a policy denial or a pause, not an apologetic model response. Test expired credentials, missing approvals, malformed arguments, and a reviewer rejection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test approval integrity
Verify that a paused call cannot execute through a second route, that approval is bound to the exact arguments, and that changing an argument after approval triggers a new check. Confirm that duplicate clicks do not execute the action twice and that a network retry cannot bypass the gate.
Test hostile content
Place instructions such as “ignore previous rules,” fake approval messages, malicious links, and requests for secrets in documents the agent must read. The agent should treat them as data, retain narrow permissions, and stop or escalate when the requested effect is outside scope.
Test recovery
Simulate a tool outage, partially completed operation, revoked credential, and stale approval. Define whether the operation is retried, rolled back, or handed to a person. Record the outcome so a later reviewer can distinguish an intentional change from a failed attempt.
Common control failures and their fixes
| Failure | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “The system prompt says never delete data.” | Prompts do not enforce filesystem, database, or API authority. | Remove delete permission, isolate the data, and require approval for any destructive operation that remains necessary. |
| One administrator credential is shared by every agent. | There is no meaningful least privilege or attribution. | Create separate identities per task or environment and grant only required roles. |
| An approval asks, “Continue?” | The reviewer cannot evaluate the target or arguments. | Display the exact action, identity, environment, arguments, and expected effect. |
An auto policy is described as human approval. |
Automatically allowed calls execute before a person sees them. | Describe it as server-side policy evaluation; use an explicit pause for human review. |
| A tool is disabled, but its credential remains broadly usable. | Another route may still reach the same capability. | Revoke or narrow the underlying credential and network path, then verify effective access. |
| Logs contain only “approved: true.” | You cannot reconstruct what was approved or what happened. | Store the request, arguments, policy result, reviewer, result, and blocks with correlation IDs. |
| Policies change during a long-running session. | The session may retain its original tool configuration. | Expire or restart sessions after authority changes and record the policy version used. |
A practical control checklist
- Is the task, data scope, allowed operation, prohibited operation, and approval point written down?
- Does the agent have a distinct identity rather than a shared administrator account?
- Are roles, API keys, network destinations, files, and environments restricted to what the task needs?
- Are read and write operations separated where possible?
- Does the gate occur immediately before the consequential side effect?
- Does the reviewer see the exact target, arguments, identity, and environment?
- Can a policy deny or limit an action even when a human makes a mistake?
- Are pre-approval and post-approval checks both enforced?
- Are requests, tool calls, decisions, results, and policy blocks retained in an auditable trail?
- Are new tools, MCP servers, credentials, schemas, and session configurations reviewed as authority changes?
- Have rejection, injection, retry, outage, stale approval, and partial-completion paths been tested?
The control pattern to use
Use automatic execution only for bounded effects whose consequences are acceptable without seeing each call. Give every agent a narrow identity and enforce its limits outside the model. Pause at the side-effect boundary for a specific human decision when money, legal commitments, regulated outcomes, production data, privileged access, or hard-to-reverse changes are involved. Then preserve the full chain—from request and proposed arguments to policy decision, approval, result, and network or access blocks—for investigation and continuous tightening.
