Build a reusable character reference and identity sheet, keep a separate style reference or style description, write lighting and color in concrete visual terms, and change only one variable at a time. References guide generation rather than guaranteeing pixel-perfect reproduction, so every image needs a side-by-side check.
What consistency actually means
A coherent series does not require every image to be identical. It requires the elements that define continuity to remain stable while the scene changes. Decide which details are fixed and which are allowed to vary before generating the first image.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Identity: facial structure, skin tone, hair shape and color, body proportions, distinctive marks, clothing, and recurring accessories.
- Style: medium, line quality, rendering method, texture, contrast, and the visual vocabulary shared by the series.
- Lighting: source position, direction, softness, color temperature, and shadow behavior.
- Color: a bounded palette plus colors that must remain attached to particular objects.
- Scene variables: pose, action, location, props, framing, and time of day.
Write the fixed list down. Without an explicit boundary, a prompt edit that improves a background can quietly alter a face, jacket color, or light direction.
Separate the character reference from the style reference
Subject identity is not visual style
A character or object reference tells a model what should appear. A style reference tells it how the result should look. Midjourney describes its Style Reference as capturing an existing image’s visual vibe, including color, medium, texture, and lighting, rather than reproducing the people or objects in that image. See the Style Reference documentation.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Using one image for both jobs can produce a series that borrows the wrong face, clothing, or composition. Keep a clear identity anchor for the subject and a separate style anchor for the treatment. If you use text instead of a style image, describe the same visual properties explicitly and reuse that description unchanged.
Build a reusable identity sheet
Choose a clean reference image in which the face, hair, proportions, clothing, and distinctive marks are easy to inspect. Then create a short identity sheet that can be pasted into every prompt or stored beside the project assets.
- Face: age range, face shape, eye shape and color, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and any freckles, scars, or birthmarks.
- Hair: length, cut, parting, texture, and stable color.
- Body: approximate height or proportions, build, and any characteristic posture.
- Wardrobe: garment types, materials, patterns, and colors that must not change.
- Accessories: glasses, jewelry, bags, tools, or other recognizable objects.
- Continuity rules: details that may change by scene and details that may never change.
OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance recommends establishing appearance, proportions, outfit, and tone, then reusing the generated character image while repeating the defining constraints. The sheet should be compact enough to use every time; a long biography adds noise without improving visual identity.
Freeze the tool and record a baseline
Consistency is easier when the series stays on one service, model version, and workflow. Before making variations, save the baseline prompt, reference files, aspect ratio, quality settings, and the resulting image. OpenAI recommends keeping representative prompts and reference images together with the model, request settings, and outputs.
- Choose the model version. Write the exact service and version in the project log.
- Save source files. Keep the identity image, style image, masks, and any edited originals at their original resolution.
- Record settings. Note aspect ratio, quality or speed mode, image weight, style weight, seed if available, and edit strength.
- Label outputs. Use a consistent filename containing scene, revision, and date, such as
hero_alley_v03_2026-10-16. - Preserve the first successful result. It is your visual baseline for later comparisons, not a disposable draft.
Do not assume a seed locks continuity. Midjourney’s Parameter List describes --seed as useful for testing and experimenting; it does not establish that a fixed seed preserves a character, style, or exact image when prompts, versions, or references change.
Set up references according to their role
Character or object reference
Use the identity image to guide the subject. State in the prompt which uploaded image is the character reference and which visible traits must remain. A reference can influence a generation without being copied exactly, so text still needs to describe the desired final image.

Style reference
Use the style image, or a fixed style paragraph, for medium, line quality, texture, contrast, and palette. Keep the scene description simple enough that it does not fight the style instruction. Midjourney’s Style Reference feature is documented for version 6 and later and uses --sref; its --sw style-weight control and other syntax can vary with the applicable version, so verify the current documentation before standardizing a parameter.
Image prompts and exact-copy expectations
Midjourney’s Image Prompts page explains that references guide a unique generation rather than copying an image exactly. Text should therefore describe everything that belongs in the final frame, including the character’s clothing, the action, the setting, and the intended lighting.
Current Midjourney reference options
Reference controls are version-specific. Check the model selector and the live documentation before giving a team a fixed recipe.
| Capability | Documented workflow | Constraint to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Style control | Style Reference with --sref for the overall look, including color, medium, texture, and lighting. |
Style-weight syntax and applicable ranges depend on the version. |
| Subject control in V7 | Omni Reference accepts one reference image and can be combined with Style References. | The Omni Reference page says it uses twice the GPU time of regular V7 images. |
| Subject and image editing in V8.1/V8.2 | The Edit Model supports editing and outpainting with up to four reference images. | When attributes are mixed, the documentation recommends combining the characters into one reference image. |
| V8.X subject workflow | The Omni Reference documentation directs V8.X users to the Edit Model. | Do not carry a V7 command into V8.X without checking compatibility. |
Read the current pages for Omni Reference and the Edit Model before production. Feature names, supported versions, image limits, and generation costs can change.
Use a stable prompt template
Keep the identity and style blocks fixed. Replace only the scene block for each new image. A role-labeled template prevents accidental omission when several reference files are uploaded.
SUBJECT REFERENCE: [identity image filename]
STYLE REFERENCE: [style image filename or fixed style paragraph]
IDENTITY: [face, hair, proportions, clothing, accessories, unchanging colors]
STYLE: [medium, line quality, texture, contrast, palette]
LIGHT: [source, direction, softness, color temperature, shadow character]
SCENE: [action, pose, setting, props, framing]
CONTINUITY: preserve the identity, outfit colors, style, light direction, and palette; change only the scene description
For an API or batch workflow, keep the template in a version-controlled text file and store the exact reference filenames with each output. For a conversational editor, paste the fixed blocks again when a revision begins instead of assuming the system will retain every earlier constraint.

Describe lighting and color literally
Lighting language that survives scene changes
Broad mood words such as “cinematic,” “beautiful,” or “dramatic” leave the important decisions unspecified. Name the visible mechanics:
- Source: window, overcast sky, practical lamp, sun, neon sign, or studio softbox.
- Direction: camera left, camera right, backlight, top light, or frontal.
- Softness: hard-edged, diffused, broad, or soft-edged shadows.
- Color temperature: warm amber key, neutral daylight, or cool blue fill.
- Shadow behavior: short and soft, long and sharp, open shadows, or a controlled rim.
- Relative strength: dominant key, gentle fill, or subtle rim.
OpenAI’s Academy gives “soft natural light from a window on the left” as a clearer instruction than “beautiful lighting.” Its image-generation guidance also recommends explicit scale, atmosphere, and color for difficult cinematic, low-light, rainy, or neon scenes.
Bound the palette
List three to six anchor colors and attach them to objects. For example: “muted teal walls, cream highlights, rust accents; keep the jacket deep green and the scarf mustard.” Distinguish palette colors from lighting colors so a blue fill does not turn a character’s blue clothing into a different hue. Repeat the palette in every scene prompt, even when the setting changes.

A useful combined instruction is: “Soft warm key light from camera left; gentle cool fill from the right; soft-edged shadows; muted teal, cream, and rust palette; keep the character’s jacket deep green.” This is a prompt pattern, not a guarantee, so inspect the generated image for hue shifts.
Generate a baseline, then vary one thing at a time
- Make the anchor image. Use a neutral pose and uncluttered background so identity traits are visible.
- Approve the fixed blocks. Confirm the face, hair, proportions, outfit, palette, style, and lighting description.
- Create one scene variation. Change only the action, pose, setting, or framing needed for the next image.
- Compare against the baseline. Check identity first, then clothing colors, light direction, shadows, palette, and texture.
- Revise one issue. If the face drifts, edit identity language and the face region; do not also rewrite the composition and style.
- Save the accepted result. Add the prompt and settings to the project log before starting the next scene.
OpenAI’s documentation states that “Repeated edits can still change details you intended to preserve.” Small, targeted revisions and repetition of the most important constraints reduce, but do not eliminate, that drift.
Editing, inpainting, and pixel-level continuity
Use an edit or inpaint operation when the composition is already correct and only a localized change is needed. Describe the unchanged areas as well as the requested change, because an editor may reinterpret surrounding details. Midjourney documents editing and outpainting in its Edit Model workflow.

If a region must remain pixel-identical—such as an approved logo, a product label, or a character’s exact face—prompting alone is not a reliable method. OpenAI’s API guidance recommends compositing an approved edit into the original for exact preservation. Keep the untouched layer and the edited layer separate so you can undo a change without regenerating the entire frame.

Use a contact sheet and a rejection checklist
Place approved images in a grid at the same display size. Side-by-side comparison reveals gradual drift that is easy to miss when viewing one image at a time. Mark each image against the same checklist:
- Are the face shape, eyes, hair, marks, and apparent age stable?
- Are body proportions and characteristic posture plausible across poses?
- Are recurring garments, accessories, and their colors intact?
- Does the key light come from the stated side in every frame?
- Are shadow edges and fill color consistent with the lighting brief?
- Do the anchor palette colors remain within the intended range?
- Does the medium, line quality, texture, and contrast match the style anchor?
- Has a background change introduced an unwanted color cast or atmospheric effect?
Reject an image that fails a fixed requirement rather than trying to rationalize the mismatch. Keep rejected versions labeled so you do not accidentally reuse them as references.
Troubleshoot common drift
The face changes between scenes
Use the clearest approved identity image, reduce the number of competing subject references, and repeat the defining facial traits in the fixed identity block. Revise only the face and identity constraints first. If the model supports a subject-reference or edit workflow for the current version, use that rather than an inspirational image prompt alone.
Clothing colors wander
Name the garment and its color together—“deep-green jacket,” not merely “green.” Repeat the instruction in the continuity block and specify the scene light separately. A warm key can make every object look orange, so also state that the jacket must remain deep green under the new lighting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Light direction flips
Replace mood terms with a source and side: “large soft window camera left, gentle cool fill camera right.” Check highlights and cast shadows in the result. If the direction is wrong, revise the lighting block without changing the scene or style wording.
Best Value
The palette becomes too saturated
Use bounded descriptors such as “muted,” “low-saturation,” or “dusty,” list the anchor colors, and remove conflicting terms such as “vivid neon” from the scene prompt. Keep lighting temperature distinct from object color.
The style is lost when the setting changes
Reapply the style reference and fixed style paragraph. Keep the scene description concrete but short, and avoid adding a second set of medium or texture terms that conflicts with the style anchor. Midjourney’s Style Reference guidance specifically advises simple text prompts that do not fight the referenced look.
Repeated edits damage approved details
Stop editing the same image indefinitely. Return to the last approved baseline, make one targeted change, and save a new version. For exact regions, composite the approved pixels instead of asking the model to recreate them.
How to choose a workflow
There is no universal winner; evaluate the controls your series actually needs.
- Subject control: confirm that the current model accepts a character or object reference and how many images it allows.
- Style control: look for a separate style-reference feature that can be combined with the subject reference.
- Editing behavior: check whether the service supports regional edits, inpainting, or outpainting and how much surrounding content may drift.
- Version and cost: verify model compatibility, image limits, and generation cost before promising a production schedule.
- Reference roles: choose a workflow that lets you label which image controls identity and which controls style.
For example, V7 Omni Reference is documented for one subject image and can be combined with Style References, while the V8.1/V8.2 Edit Model is documented for up to four references. Those capabilities are version-specific, not general guarantees about every image model.
What consistency tools cannot guarantee
References influence generation; they do not function as a deterministic character database. A new pose, crop, costume interaction, or extreme lighting setup can expose details that were not visible in the anchor image. Even a fixed seed may not preserve identity when the prompt, model version, or reference set changes.
No cited documentation establishes a percentage for character match, lighting match, or palette match, and there is no reliable universal consistency rate to promise. Treat every generated frame as a candidate that must pass the same review. For a publication, game, or product series where exact marks are essential, combine generation with manual retouching, compositing, or another deterministic asset pipeline.

A repeatable production checklist
- Define fixed identity, style, lighting, and palette requirements.
- Select one approved character reference and one style reference.
- Write the identity sheet and stable prompt template.
- Freeze the service, model version, settings, and reference files.
- Generate and approve a neutral baseline.
- Change one scene variable at a time.
- Repeat the constraints that matter in every prompt or edit.
- Review each output in a contact sheet against the checklist.
- Use targeted revisions for drift and compositing for pixel-identical regions.
- Archive prompts, references, settings, approved outputs, and rejected versions.
That process turns consistency from a hope into a controlled review loop: identity and style have separate anchors, light and color are measurable instructions, and every change has a known scope.
