How to Keep Captions Visible Across Prerecorded Episodes in a 24/7 YouTube Story Stream

To keep captions visible as a 24/7 YouTube story stream moves between prerecorded episodes, prepare captions for each episode and separately configure captions for the live broadcast. A caption track attached to an uploaded video does not automatically become the live stream’s caption feed. Choose embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions or a supported HTTP POST caption feed, then test episode changes and restarts in your actual setup. YouTube does not promise that captions will carry across episode boundaries automatically.

Plan for two separate caption layers

Each prerecorded episode can have its own timed caption or subtitle track in YouTube Studio. The continuous live broadcast has a separate caption path: captions can be embedded in the outgoing video signal or sent through a supported HTTP POST caption feed. Do not assume that a caption track on an episode’s YouTube video will appear in the live output when your playout system switches to that episode.

This distinction matters most at boundaries. The episode may change while the live broadcast and its caption feed continue; whether captions stay synchronized depends on how your encoder, caption system, and playout pipeline handle that change. YouTube’s documentation describes delivery methods, but it does not guarantee automatic episode-to-episode continuity.

Prepare captions for every episode

Add or review each episode’s timed captions

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the episode and go to Subtitles.
  2. Choose the language and add a caption track. YouTube supports uploading a caption file with timing, entering captions manually, or using transcript auto-sync.
  3. For auto-sync, provide a transcript in the same language as the spoken audio. YouTube says processing may take a few minutes and does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than one hour or with poor audio quality.
  4. Review the finished track against the episode, including names, punctuation, speaker changes, and timing. Do not assume automatically generated captions are error-free.

YouTube’s steps and options are described in its Add subtitles & captions guidance. A Studio track helps viewers watch that episode as a YouTube video; it is not a substitute for configuring captions on the live broadcast.

Choose how the live broadcast will deliver captions

Make this choice before configuring your encoder or captioning system. YouTube’s live-caption guidance describes two delivery paths, and the right one depends on what your actual equipment and software support.

Live caption path What you need What to verify
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 An encoder and outgoing video signal that can carry embedded captions in the supported format. Confirm the encoder is embedding the captions in the live output and that they remain synchronized when the playout switches episodes.
HTTP POST caption feed A supported captioning workflow that sends captions to the broadcast’s caption ingestion URL. Configure the URL for the correct broadcast and provide it to the captioning software or provider as YouTube directs. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed.

YouTube documents these methods in its Live caption requirements. Its guidance names Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net as examples for live caption workflows. That listing does not establish compatibility with every encoder or automatic handling of episode transitions; check current vendor requirements.

The 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s cited live-caption workflow currently describes support for one caption track. Because platform capabilities can change, check YouTube’s current instructions and your broadcast configuration when selecting the caption language and track.

Set latency with captions in mind

Do not use ultra-low latency if closed captions are required. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation states that ultra-low latency does not support closed captions or resolutions higher than 1080p.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

YouTube’s Help instructions for its HTTP caption setup describe adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. That delay belongs to that specific workflow; it is not a universal requirement for embedded captions or every caption setup. Follow the instructions for the method you chose and verify the resulting timing in the live player.

Test episode changes before relying on a 24/7 schedule

A caption method that works during one episode may still fail when the next file starts, the stream reconnects, or the encoder restarts. Run a representative test with at least two episodes before leaving the stream unattended. These checks are practical recommendations, not a YouTube guarantee.

  • Check that caption text appears at the right time during each episode, especially the first seconds after a switch.
  • Watch the transition itself for missing text, stale captions from the previous episode, or captions arriving too early or late.
  • Confirm the expected caption language and track are available in the live player.
  • Test what happens after a stream interruption, encoder restart, or recovery. Confirm the caption feed reconnects or embedded captions resume with the video.
  • Check the live player rather than relying only on encoder indicators; the viewer-facing output is what matters.

For broader encoder setup, consult YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions. The broadcast’s caption mode and the chosen encoder or caption provider must agree with the delivery method you selected.

Check the replay separately

Do not treat live captions as a durable replay track. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends; captions for the video on demand (VOD) are generated separately and may differ. After the broadcast, open the replay and verify its caption track independently. If captions are missing or inaccurate there, use the episode or replay’s available Studio caption tools rather than assuming the live feed will repair the VOD.

Troubleshoot captions that disappear or drift

No captions on a prerecorded episode

  • Check in YouTube Studio whether that episode has an owner-provided caption track or an automatically generated one.
  • If generated captions are missing or delayed, YouTube lists possible factors including language support, poor sound, long duration, long silence at the start, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages.
  • Review and correct generated captions when needed; availability and accuracy are not guaranteed.

See YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance for the listed conditions.

Episode captions exist, but captions disappear in the live output

  • Confirm the broadcast caption mode matches the intended method: embedded captions or HTTP POST.
  • For embedded captions, verify that the encoder is actually putting captions into the outgoing video signal.
  • For HTTP POST, check the caption ingestion URL, the configured stream entry point, and whether the caption provider is still sending its feed.
  • Check the latency mode; ultra-low latency does not support closed captions.

These are sensible places to investigate based on YouTube’s documented delivery paths, not a universal diagnostic sequence for every encoder.

Captions are present but mistimed after an episode switch

Repeat the transition test and inspect the first seconds after the switch. Check whether the caption system is receiving the new episode’s timing and whether its feed or embedded output remains in sync with the playout. The available documentation does not establish that YouTube can automatically align a live caption feed with prerecorded episode boundaries.

Live captions work, but the replay has none or looks different

Verify the replay track separately. YouTube’s live automatic captions are not retained after the stream, and VOD captions are generated separately and can differ.
