To free up local space on a Google Pixel 10, turn on Smart Storage: once the phone is nearly full, it can remove device copies of photos and videos that have already been backed up. First confirm those files finished backing up. This affects storage on the phone, not the separate storage allowance for your Google Account.
What Smart Storage removes—and what it does not
Smart Storage is useful when photos and videos are taking up room on the phone. Google Pixel Help says, “If you back up with Google Photos, you can delete the copies on your phone or tablet.” With Smart Storage enabled, backed-up media may be cleared automatically from the device when its storage is nearly full. The backed-up copies remain accessible through Google Photos when the phone is connected to the internet. Google Pixel Help explains the feature and its requirements.

This is not a way to expand the Pixel 10’s built-in capacity, and it does not free Google Account storage. Google says each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage; that figure applies to the account, not the phone, and Google’s help page does not state a publication year. If the account is full, that is a separate constraint: new items may not be able to back up, so Smart Storage cannot safely remove their device copies on the assumption that a backup exists. Google’s backup-quality guide describes Google Account storage.

- Open Settings > Storage and review which categories are using space. Android’s storage view covers files and media as well as apps; it is different from memory used to run apps and Android.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Free up space > Menu > Settings > Smart Storage.
- Turn on Smart Storage. Google’s documented path may appear differently on another Android version or device; if a label is missing, look in the Pixel’s Storage settings for the Smart Storage option.
- Before relying on automatic photo cleanup, open Google Photos and verify that important photos and videos show as backed up. Wait for any pending backup to finish. A backed-up copy may require an internet connection to view.
Other ways to recover local space
Review and delete files you recognize
In the Pixel’s Files app, browse categories and sort files by name, date, or size to identify large items. Delete only files you recognize and no longer need. Some offline music, films, maps, or other downloads must be removed from within the app that downloaded them. Google’s file-management instructions for Pixel phones and tablets cover browsing and deleting files.

Archive or uninstall apps you no longer use
Archiving, where available, removes an app’s software while keeping its personal app data and leaving its icon in place. You can restore it only if the app is still available in Google Play. Uninstalling removes the app instead. Android Help explains how app archiving works and what it preserves.
Clear cache only when appropriate
In an app’s settings, Clear cache deletes temporary data; the app may take longer to open the next time. Clear storage permanently deletes all of that app’s data. Do not use Clear storage as a routine space-saving step unless you are prepared to lose that data. Google Pixel Help distinguishes these controls in its storage guidance.

Move files to a computer
You can copy large files to a computer over USB, check that the transfer succeeded, and then delete the phone copies you no longer need. This is a manual alternative; Smart Storage does not require a cable.
Choose the method that fits the space you need
| Method | What it can remove | Does it preserve personal data? | Backup or review needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Storage | Device copies of backed-up photos and videos when phone storage is nearly full | Backed-up copies remain in Google Photos; verify backup completion first | Confirm backup status; then removal is automatic |
| Files app or downloaded-content controls | Selected files and offline downloads | Only if you keep another copy; deleted files may not be recoverable | Manual review before deletion |
| App archive | App software | Yes, app data is retained; restoration depends on app availability in Google Play | Manual selection; restore later if available |
| Uninstall | The app | Do not assume app data will be retained | Manual selection |
| Clear cache | Temporary app data | App’s saved data is not cleared by this action | Manual action; app may load more slowly next time |
| Clear storage | All data for that app | No; app data is permanently deleted | Use only if you accept the data loss |
| USB transfer to a computer | Files you copy and then remove from the phone | Yes, if the copy is verified before deletion | Manual transfer and review |
The amount recovered depends on what is actually stored on your phone; no fixed space saving is guaranteed.
