If a toddler’s off-the-shoulder romper keeps slipping, first check that it fits now and that its elastic, seams and fastenings are intact. Don’t add a neck tie, loose pin or detachable clip as a quick fix: the reviewed safety guidance does not establish those as safe ways to secure a toddler’s garment. If the romper won’t stay in place during ordinary movement, set it aside and choose a close-fitting design with securely attached, continuous shoulder straps.
Start by checking the fit and the garment
Try the romper on your child and observe how it sits during ordinary movement. Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office advises buying children’s apparel to fit now rather than sizing up; oversized clothes can contribute to trips and falls. Before putting it back on, inspect the neckline elastic, seams, strap attachments, snaps and decorative parts. Don’t use the romper if the elastic has stretched, stitching is unraveling, a part is coming loose, or an edge or point is sharp. Health Canada’s January 2026 guidance says clothing for children under three should not have small parts that detach under reasonably foreseeable use, and warns about sharp edges and unraveling stitching. Why improvised fasteners are a poor fix
Avoid ties or cords near the neck
Do not tie the romper around your toddler’s neck or upper chest to hold it up. Singapore’s guidance advises against cords or drawstrings around the hood and neck for children below seven, and says shoulder straps should be continuous, securely fastened and free of loose ends.

Don’t rely on removable clips, pins or tape
The reviewed sources do not validate fashion tape, removable garment clips or safety pins for securing a toddler’s romper. Health Canada’s advice about detachable small parts and exposed sharp edges gives reason to avoid attachments that could come loose or leave a sharp point. The NHS specifically warns against tying or clipping a dummy to a baby’s clothes because the tie or ribbon could strangle the child; that warning concerns dummy clips, not every garment clip, but it is a reason not to add loose ties. Choose a stable design instead
If the romper slips despite an appropriate fit and intact construction, stop using it rather than repeatedly pulling it back into place. Select clothing that fits closely and has securely attached, continuous shoulder straps without loose ends. Intertek’s interpretation of European guidance says braces should be close fitting and that wearing them off the shoulder and advertising them that way is not acceptable on children’s clothing. This summarizes CEN/TR 17376:2019 and EN 14682; it is a European standards interpretation, not a universal legal ruling for every romper. What if you want to alter the romper?
A permanent alteration may change how the garment fits, but the sources reviewed do not test a repair method on a particular romper. If you consider an alteration, have the actual garment assessed and make sure the finished work leaves no loose small parts, sharp edges, unraveling stitching, neck-area cords or free strap ends. These are safety criteria drawn from the guidance, not a tested alteration recipe. If those conditions cannot be assured, use another garment.
