Signing out ends the processes in that user’s interactive session, including OBS. To keep OBS streaming on the same PC, leave the Windows account signed in and lock the computer instead. If streaming must continue after sign-out, use a host or workflow designed for that situation and test it before relying on it.
Why OBS stops when you sign out
Windows ends the processes in an interactive user’s logon session when that user logs off. OBS is a desktop application, so its stream should not be expected to survive that session ending. Microsoft’s documentation describes the Windows session behavior; it does not specifically test OBS. Microsoft: Interactive Services

Locking the workstation is different: it leaves the user session active. OBS can therefore remain running while the screen is locked, but verify your specific Windows, OBS, and stream setup before depending on it for an important broadcast.
Keep OBS running on the current PC
- Sign in to the Windows account that has the OBS profile, scenes, and playlist you intend to use.
- Open OBS and confirm the intended media source or playlist is playing. Check that the right stream key and YouTube event are selected.
- Start streaming and verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and that the expected video is playing.
- Lock, don’t sign out. Use Windows’ Lock action (for example, press Win + L). Do not choose Sign out, Log off, or Shut down.
- Check the stream from another device after locking, especially before leaving it unattended for a long period.
Try this first with a short private or unlisted broadcast. Locking is a practical way to leave the desktop session active; it is not a guarantee against power, network, application, or YouTube ingest interruptions.

What OBS launch automation can—and cannot—do
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that starts streaming automatically. For scheduled or otherwise automated launches on Windows, its documentation says to set the launch’s Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. These steps can help start OBS and the stream; they do not make OBS survive a Windows logoff. OBS launch parameters
If you use Task Scheduler, distinguish between starting OBS in the signed-in user’s session and starting it when no user is logged in. Launch automation does not establish that OBS will work in a noninteractive session, nor does it prove that the intended scene, media source, and YouTube event will be ready. Test the exact scheduled task and configuration before relying on it.

OBS, YouTube, and Windows control different parts of the stream
- Windows controls the process lifetime. Signing out ends the interactive session and its processes.
- OBS controls the encoder feed. It sends video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key configured in the encoder. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- YouTube controls the broadcast state. Encoder data arriving and a broadcast being live are separate states. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings concern the broadcast; they do not keep OBS alive after sign-out. YouTube Studio labels and controls can change, so check the current interface rather than relying on older screenshots or guides.
Why a Windows service is not a drop-in fix
Running OBS as a service is not a documented, supported way to make this desktop workflow survive sign-out. Microsoft says services cannot directly interact with a user as of Windows Vista and discourages interactive services on systems with Terminal Services or fast user switching. A desktop encoder may depend on the logged-in user session or its resources; the cited documentation does not certify OBS running in session 0. Microsoft: Interactive Services
If a signed-out, unattended stream is a hard requirement, choose a host or workflow intended for that operating model. Verify how it handles the video source, YouTube connection, broadcast state, monitoring, and recovery before using it for an important stream.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream stops after you sign out | Windows ended OBS with the interactive session. | Keep the account signed in and lock the PC, or move to a workflow designed and tested to run independently of that session. |
| OBS does not open from a scheduled launch | The launch may have the wrong working directory or session context. | For automated Windows launches, set Start in to the folder containing obs64.exe. Test whether the task runs in the user session your OBS setup needs. |
| YouTube is not receiving video | The encoder may not be sending to the expected server URL or stream key, or the stream may not have started. | Check the encoder’s YouTube server URL and stream key, then confirm ingest status in YouTube Studio. |
| Encoder feed arrives but the broadcast is not live | The encoder feed and YouTube broadcast state are separate. | Check the event’s current YouTube Studio controls and whether the broadcast needs to be started there. |
| Stream fails while the PC is locked | Locking preserves the session but does not prevent other interruptions, such as a PC sleep setting, network loss, or OBS failure. | Test the locked setup and review power and network behavior. Do not treat locking as a substitute for monitoring or recovery. |
Cost and reliability considerations
Keeping OBS on your own PC avoids moving the encoder to another host, but the Windows account must remain signed in and the PC, power, and network must stay available. A scheduled launch can automate startup, not persistence after logoff. For a cloud workflow, compare the recurring cost and storage allowance with the time and equipment involved in keeping a local machine available; test YouTube event behavior and recovery before a critical broadcast.
