Keep your dated journal entry as the source of truth, and treat an AI diary’s summaries or recollections as suggestions to check. If it misremembers something, correct it where the app allows; if advice is unwelcome, ask for reflection or questions only and look for a control to disable AI. Prompts can state your preference, but they are not a guaranteed safeguard.
How do I stop AI from making things up about my past?
Keep your own account in a dated, editable entry. When a diary says “you told me” or describes an earlier event, compare the claim with the original entry before treating it as fact. Keep the AI’s interpretation distinct from what you actually wrote.

This matters because AI reflections can be inaccurate or irrelevant. Google warns that its Pixel Journal AI may not always be accurate or relevant; that is a product-specific warning, but a useful reason to verify any generated recollection rather than letting it overwrite your own account. Google Pixel Journal help
- Check the date and entry. Find the original note the AI appears to be referring to.
- Correct the record. If the app supports correction, state what was wrong and what the entry actually says. Gemini, for example, documents direct correction of remembered information.
- Review what the product retains. If a mistaken recollection came from a conversation, consider whether deleting that chat is appropriate. In Gemini, deletion may not stop personalization immediately; the help page notes there can be a delay. Gemini memory controls
Do not assume a memory setting prevents every false statement. Gemini’s memory controls concern personalization from past chats; Google does not claim they eliminate all inaccurate responses or turn Gemini into a dedicated diary.

How do I get my AI diary to stop giving advice?
Say what kind of response you want, as specifically as possible. For example: “Reflect my words without interpreting them. Ask one open question, and do not suggest actions unless I ask.” Or: “Please listen and ask questions; don’t give advice.”
These prompts clarify your preference, but they do not technically guarantee that every AI system will comply. Check the app’s settings for a control to disable advice, reflections, or AI features. If the behavior persists and there is no suitable control, stop using the AI feature and keep journaling without it.

Some services describe boundaries in their own policies. Senda’s policy, last updated August 7, 2026, says its generated replies can be wrong and documents instructions against medical, legal, or financial advice, along with a stated crisis-language screening and handoff. That is one service’s description of its approach—not an independently verified guarantee or a standard that applies to other diaries. Senda AI policy
Can I turn off memory in my AI journal?
It depends on the product, and “memory” may mean different things: personalization from past chats, saved information, or AI features that analyze journal entries. Look for separate controls rather than assuming one switch covers all of them.

- Pixel Journal: Google says users can turn off AI features. Existing entries remain, but new AI reflections, inspiration, and insights stop. The app’s documented availability is limited to Pixel 8 and later, with AI features on Pixel 9 and later subject to stated model exceptions; check the current help page for eligibility. See Pixel Journal’s current instructions.
Turning off AI output is not necessarily the same as turning off a product’s memory or changing how entries are stored. Read the app’s specific settings and help page before relying on a control.
How private are AI journal entries?
Privacy depends on the particular app and its settings. Before writing sensitive details, check what information is sent for AI processing, what is stored or backed up, how retention and deletion work, and whether the app has access to your microphone, location, photos, or health data.

Google’s Pixel Journal documentation describes entries as private by default and discusses AI processing, optional backups, and permissions. It also warns that Gboard speech input may be processed on Google’s servers depending on settings. Those details apply to Pixel Journal; they should not be assumed for another journaling app. Review Google’s Pixel Journal privacy and permissions details.

There is no rate in the sources cited here for how often AI diaries invent autobiographical memories or give unsolicited advice. Nor do the available studies prove that a particular prompt or setting prevents either behavior.

- MindfulDiary: The 2023 paper describes an LLM-based journaling app designed with mental-health professionals around a state-based approach to expert guidelines. Its four-week field study involved 28 patients with major depressive disorder and five psychiatrists. That describes one design and study; it does not prove that AI diaries generally avoid false memories or unwanted advice. Read the MindfulDiary paper.
- MindScape: The 2024 paper describes a journaling design combining large language models with behavioral sensing and personalized prompts. Its four areas of interest were social interaction, sleep, digital habits, and physical fitness. The paper describes a preliminary user study and planned further study, not evidence that the design prevents inaccurate recollections or advice. Read the MindScape paper.
For practical use, the safest working distinction is simple: your dated entry is your record; generated reflections are fallible interpretations. Use correction, deletion, and AI-off controls where available, and do not rely on a prompt as a technical guarantee.
When an AI diary is not the right support
An AI diary is not a substitute for professional care or an emergency service. Google says Pixel Journal is not a therapist or mental-health professional and is not monitored in real time for crisis support. If you need immediate help, contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis-support service rather than waiting for a journal app to respond. Google Pixel Journal help
