Start with the feeder app’s notification filter, not the phone’s mute switch. On Birdfy, open the device settings and change Notification Frequency from All Push to Birds & Squirrels when you only want alerts for AI-recognized birds or squirrels. Choose Smart Push when you want fewer alerts about individual species, add nuisance species such as squirrels to Do Not Disturb, and use Must Push for species you never want to miss.
If alerts are repeating because of movement rather than species identification, lower motion sensitivity and lengthen the cooldown. A shaded, stable installation away from direct sun and strong airflow also reduces false triggers. Birdfy’s labels are model- and app-specific; users of other feeders should look for equivalent event filters, sensitivity, cooldown and schedule controls in their manufacturer’s documentation.

Identify what kind of alert is overwhelming your phone
“Too many notifications” can describe two different events. A motion alert is generated when the camera sees movement; an AI identification alert is associated with a recognized bird, squirrel or species tag. The controls that reduce one type may not reduce the other. Before changing several settings, open a recent notification and note whether it mentions motion, a recording, a species or a visitor.

Birdfy says motion detection can automatically record a clip and send a notification when the camera detects movement. Its app also has notification-frequency and species controls. The manufacturer’s Introduction to the Birdfy App describes these controls, while the FAQ & Troubleshooting page covers recognition prerequisites and installation-related false triggers.

Choose the right notification frequency in Birdfy
In Birdfy, open the feeder’s device settings and find Notification Frequency. The documented choices are All Push, Birds & Squirrels, Smart Push and Never. They represent progressively stronger filtering, but they do not necessarily mean the camera stops recording every event. Check the event history after changing a setting to see what the app still records and what it sends to your phone.
| Setting | Use it when | Documented behavior or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| All Push | You want alerts for every supported push event. | Broadest notification choice; it can include frequent motion-driven events. |
| Birds & Squirrels | You want alerts limited to AI-recognized birds or squirrels. | Birdfy says AI Bird Recognition must be active for this filter. |
| Smart Push | You want fewer alerts about individual species or new visitors. | Birdfy describes alerts for a specific bird species only once per hour; exact behavior and availability can depend on the model and app. |
| Never | You want push notifications disabled for the device. | The label is available in Birdfy’s documented notification-frequency choices; verify how recording and in-app history behave on your model. |
Set Birds & Squirrels for an animal-only feed
- Open the Birdfy app and select the relevant feeder.
- Open the device settings and tap Notification Frequency.
- Select Birds & Squirrels.
- Confirm that AI Bird Recognition is enabled. Birdfy’s FAQ identifies recognition as a prerequisite for this choice.
- Watch the next few events in the app. Confirm that the phone is no longer receiving alerts for movement that the system does not classify as a bird or squirrel.
This is the quickest first adjustment when the problem is a flood of general motion notifications but you still want animal activity. It is not a guarantee that every recognized event will be classified correctly, and it may not remove alerts generated by a separate motion-notification control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Smart Push when repeated species alerts are the problem
Choose Smart Push when you want the app to reduce repeat notifications about a particular species. Birdfy’s help describes Smart Push as notifying about a specific bird species only once per hour. Its app overview also refers to notifications when new visitors are detected. Because those descriptions can depend on the model and app implementation, treat Smart Push as a reduction in phone alerts, not as a promise that the camera will stop recording every visit.
- Open the feeder’s device settings.
- Tap Notification Frequency and select Smart Push.
- Leave the setting in place through a representative period of activity and inspect both phone alerts and the app’s event list.
- If a favorite species is being suppressed, add it to Must Push as described in the species-controls section below.
Use Never only when you do not want push alerts
Never is appropriate for a feeder that you are checking manually or whose recordings you want to review later without interruptions. Before choosing it, make sure you understand how your model exposes recordings in the app. A push setting controls phone notifications; it may not delete clips or disable the camera.
Mute nuisance species without silencing the feeder
When one animal generates unwanted notices, filtering that species is more precise than turning off all alerts. Birdfy’s FAQ gives squirrels as an example of a species that can be added to Do Not Disturb. The same control is useful for any species tag that your model presents and that you do not want announced.

Choose from four easy mounting options (pole, pole-top, wall, or tree) to place it exactly where the birds love to gather in your yard.
Add a species to Do Not Disturb
- Open the feeder in the Birdfy app.
- Enter the device’s notification or species settings.
- Find the species tag that is generating unwanted alerts—for example, Squirrel.
- Add that tag to Do Not Disturb.
- Review a later event to verify that the tag is muted while other desired notifications continue.
The exact path can vary by app version. If you cannot find a species list, update the app only through your normal app store and consult the current model-specific help rather than assuming that every Birdfy feeder exposes identical controls.
Protect favorite species with Must Push
Must Push is the complementary control. Birdfy describes it as a way to whitelist favorite species, including when Smart Push is enabled. Add a species when missing one particular visitor would be more frustrating than receiving occasional extra alerts.
Do Not Disturb and Must Push solve different problems: the first suppresses selected tags, while the second prioritizes selected tags. Use them together only after checking how your model resolves conflicts, because the available precedence can be model-dependent.
Reduce repeated motion alerts with sensitivity and cooldown
If the notification text points to movement rather than a species, change the motion controls. Birdfy states that lowering sensitivity reduces the chance of capturing minor movement. It also explains that a longer cooldown leaves a pause before another recording; during that interval, recording pauses even if movement continues.
| Control | Change to make | Effect to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Motion sensitivity | Lower it one step at a time. | Small, irrelevant movement is less likely to trigger a clip and alert. |
| Cooldown | Increase the interval. | After an event, the feeder waits longer before recording another one, even if movement persists during the cooldown. |
Lower motion sensitivity carefully
- Open the feeder’s device settings.
- Find the motion-sensitivity control.
- Lower the setting by one available increment rather than moving immediately to the minimum.
- Observe whether normal bird visits still create clips and alerts.
- If genuine visits disappear, raise sensitivity one step and compensate with a longer cooldown or a narrower installation view.
There is a trade-off: lower sensitivity can reduce nuisance movement but may also miss a small or brief visitor. Tune for the smallest bird or behavior you actually want to capture, not for every movement in the background.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Lengthen cooldown for birds that linger
- Open the same device-settings area and locate Cooldown.
- Choose a longer available interval.
- Let one event finish and check whether repeated clips now arrive less often.
- If the feeder records too little of a continuous visit, shorten the interval until the event history is useful without recreating the alert flood.
Cooldown changes the spacing of recordings and alerts; it does not remove the underlying motion. A bird that remains on the perch can still be present while the camera waits out the interval.

Remove environmental triggers before pushing sensitivity lower
Birdfy’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a shaded, stable installation away from direct sun and strong airflow such as fans or vents. These conditions can create movement or lighting changes that the camera interprets as activity. Correcting the installation often preserves more genuine bird detections than simply reducing sensitivity to its lowest setting.
Use shade and avoid direct sun
Move the feeder so the camera is not exposed to strong direct sunlight during the part of the day when alerts spike. A changing sun angle can alter the scene even when no animal is present. Use a location that remains shaded while keeping the feeder visible to visiting birds.
Stabilize the camera and feeder
Check that the mounting point, bracket and feeder body do not sway. A loose mount can make the entire image move whenever the feeder is touched or the wind changes. Tighten the hardware according to the manufacturer’s instructions and reassess alerts before reducing sensitivity further.
Keep the view away from strong airflow
Do not place the camera beside a fan, vent or another source of forceful air. Moving leaves, hanging decorations or a swinging feeder can repeatedly cross the camera’s motion zone. Birdfy specifically cites strong airflow as an environmental interference to avoid.
Tighten the composition where the hardware allows it
A practical refinement is to aim the camera more tightly at the feeder and exclude busy background areas, branches or paths. This is an installation suggestion rather than a documented Birdfy menu feature; use it only if your model allows safe adjustment without blocking the birds’ approach.
A controlled tuning sequence that avoids guesswork
Changing every control at once makes it impossible to know which adjustment solved the problem. Use this sequence and keep a short note of the setting and the alert type after each change.

- Classify the alert. Open a recent notification and label it motion, species recognition or another category shown by the app.
- Apply the narrowest filter. For animal-only alerts, choose Birds & Squirrels; for repeated species notices, try Smart Push; for one nuisance species, use Do Not Disturb.
- Protect priorities. Add genuinely important species to Must Push after confirming how the app handles priority and mute lists.
- Reduce environmental noise. Shade the camera, stabilize the mount and move it away from fans or vents.
- Adjust sensitivity. Lower motion sensitivity one increment and check that desired visits still appear.
- Adjust spacing. Increase cooldown if the same moving subject generates a sequence of clips.
- Recheck recordings. Compare phone alerts with the in-app event history so you know whether you reduced notifications, recordings or both.
- Change only one variable next. If the result is too aggressive, reverse the last change before trying another control.
This order preserves useful AI detections while addressing the source of the noise. It also makes it easier to restore a previous setting when a real visitor is missed.

What to expect from notification filters
Notification controls govern what reaches your phone, while motion and AI systems may continue to process or store events. A filter that reduces push alerts is therefore not automatically a recording filter. After each change, compare the phone’s notifications with the feeder’s event list. This distinction matters if you want a quiet phone but still want a complete visual record for later review.
Smart Push is especially important to interpret correctly. The documented once-per-hour behavior is a product feature description, not a study statistic or a guarantee shared by every AI feeder. Birdfy’s own wording also refers to new visitors, so the precise trigger can vary with species recognition, firmware, app version and model.
Applying the same approach to another feeder brand
The Birdfy names above should not be treated as universal. On another manufacturer’s app, look for controls with equivalent purposes:
- Event-type filtering: options that distinguish all motion from recognized birds, animals or people.
- Frequency reduction: smart, digest, intelligent or per-species alert modes.
- Species controls: mute, ignore, do-not-disturb, whitelist or priority lists.
- Motion tuning: sensitivity, detection zones and cooldown or retrigger intervals.
- Schedules: quiet hours or notification windows, if your model offers them.
Read the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact menu path and eligibility requirements. Do not assume that a setting called “smart” limits alerts in the same way across brands, or that a notification filter changes recording behavior.

- Confirm the active device. If you own more than one feeder, make sure the setting was changed on the device generating the alerts.
- Check the alert wording again. A motion notice may bypass a species filter if the app treats the two event classes separately.
- Verify AI recognition status. Birdfy requires AI Bird Recognition for the Birds & Squirrels choice.
- Inspect the mount during an alert. If the entire image moves, address vibration before lowering sensitivity further.
- Review species lists. Remove an accidentally muted favorite from Do Not Disturb or add it to Must Push.
- Check model-specific support. Birdfy’s controls and eligibility can vary by model, and other manufacturers may use different labels altogether.
For a camera-equipped feeder example, Birdfy describes the Birdfy Feeder 2 as combining a camera, AI identification and app alerts. The relevant controls still depend on the exact device and software version, so use the settings visible for your own feeder.
Recommended starting configurations
You want alerts for normal bird activity but not every movement
Start with Birds & Squirrels, confirm AI Bird Recognition, keep the camera shaded and stable, then lower motion sensitivity only if motion notices continue. Increase cooldown if one visit produces a string of clips.
You enjoy identifying new species but dislike repeats
Start with Smart Push. Add genuinely important species to Must Push and leave common nuisance tags in Do Not Disturb. Check the event history so a quieter phone does not accidentally hide recordings you intended to keep.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are temporarily monitoring the feeder manually
Select Never to stop push interruptions, then review the app’s recording history on your own schedule. Restore an active notification mode when you need immediate awareness of visitors.
You receive alerts whenever the feeder moves
Stabilize the mount, remove exposure to fans or vents, and move the camera out of direct sun. Then lower sensitivity and lengthen cooldown in small steps, checking that the smallest bird you care about is still detected.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Use the narrowest notification-frequency filter that matches your goal instead of silencing the entire device first.
- Birdfy’s Birds & Squirrels mode requires AI Bird Recognition; Smart Push is described as limiting a specific species to one notification per hour.
- Do Not Disturb can mute unwanted species tags, while Must Push can prioritize favorites.
- Lower sensitivity and a longer cooldown target repeated motion-triggered events, not necessarily AI species alerts.
- Shade, stability and distance from strong airflow reduce environmental false triggers before you sacrifice detection sensitivity.
- Verify the difference between phone notifications and stored recordings after every change, and use your own manufacturer’s documentation when the labels differ.
